How does one of the most prolific UK composers of our time compose? How can musicians make classical music accessible? We put contemporary British Composer Jonathan Dove CBE and Paul Hughes, former Director of the BBC Symphony Orchestra & Chorus in the hot seat. Speaking to Tanglin Trust School's Head of Co-curricular Michael Holiday, Jonathan and Paul share their journey in developing the world premiere of A Bridge Across the Sea – a Cantata performance based on the Ramayana, commissioned by Tanglin Trust School for its centenary celebration. Contemporary British Composer Jonathan Dove CBE is one of the most performed living opera composers. He has written more than 30 operas including Flight (1998) which has seen more than 30 productions, Mansfield Park (2011) and Marx in London (2018). Paul Hughes is a former Director at the BBC Symphony Orchestra & Chorus and the BBC Singers for more than 20 years. He currently mentors the next generation of young conductors at the Lead! Foundation. This episode was produced in partnership with member company Tanglin Trust School. You can get tickets to the World Premiere of A Bridge Across the Sea, a specially-commissioned Cantata for soloists, Children's Chorus, Adult Chorus and Orchestra by Jonathan Dove CBE here: https://sg.bookmyshow.com/en/e/TTSMUSIC

This is Bridge's last week in the driving seat of guests gifts and she is joined by Leina Ibnouf, a Sudanese Irish community activist and John 'Willy' Williams a military veteran, 7 Signal Regiment survivor and scrum master (which apparently has nothing to do with rugby). They discuss why they listen to the podcast, their favourite episodes with a focus on curiosity, the pain of not belonging, and how somehow Bobby and Bridge have become role models (yes seriously!) despite their tendency to be a bit sweary. It's a really honest, vulnerable and heartfelt episode so come and join for some real chat.
"This piece is a collaboration between composer Sarah Jenkins, sound artist Noah Lawson and poet Shukria Rezaei, and was created for the Odyssey Ensemble. The foundation for the piece is the recording provided by the Cities and Migration Sounds project, in which is heard the celebration of a group of West African migrants who had recently been rescued from an overcrowded dinghy. "The jubilation heard in the clip and the implied hardship that these people have faced and will go on to endure gave the shape and narrative for the piece. In addition, Rezaei draws upon her own experience as a refugee, weaving threads of her own story with the recording to tell a collective tale of hardship and hope." The most flashiest flash back that ever flashed back. We go back to... old times... to see some history of the island. This would be a super meaningful and interesting bit of lore, if we had watched this show in order. We look back on the life of the deep and meaningful characters of... MOTHER... and... BOY... We talk about wells, looms, and magnets. Much like Mother and her sons, Jenny has a favorite son (podcast co-host) and we're going to figure out who it is!

After all this time, it's time to flash back to the origins of the Man in Black and Jacob. Surely this will provide some critical context to let us know what is going on, and won't just tell us that Kingdom Hearts, er, the Island is light, right? Well, whatever. We're back on the island and things are getting ready to wind down. Are y'all ready for The End? Clara Galle and Julio Peña sat with me to discuss the sequel to Through My Window, aptly titled -- Through My Window: Across The Sea. The film originated as a Spanish-language film. Still, it crossed over into the hearts of millions after it was made available with subtitles in several languages and various dubbing options. It became one of the biggest movies in the United States. Galle and Peña were nice enough to discuss why they think the first one was a hit, the dark turn taken in this one, their character's relationship now being off kilter since being apart, and get into the details of filming those spicy sex scenes. Galle and Peña also finally give a definitive answer on whether or not fans can expect to see the third and final installment of the books adapted. *This interview was recorded pre-strike. Host: Monica Gleberman Editor: Shamindri De Sayrah Social Media Graphic: Jojo -- Synopsis: Ares and Raquel maintained a long-distance relationship during his studies in Stockholm. When they meet again, they find that their period of separation has put their love to the test. **Through My Window & Through My Window: Across The Sea are now streaming on Netflix. It's a Book, It's a Podcast Episode, It's KismetA bunch of geeks (native born, immigrants; Americans all) interviewing an Australian and a New Zealander/Australian/American (it's complicated) set Yr. Obt. Svt. to immediately think of the title of this podcast (eh, I need to get more than one hobby), who then looked up the phrase and found that…it's a travelogue of a New Zealander's view of the USA, circa 1888. Seriously, what are the chances that the Mind of Cameron (often non compos mentis, invariably kind of wacky) and reality and a not half bad title smack up against each other? This podcast episode was destiny realized. What then is the value of a Culture Clash episode where people-who-are-practically-Americans (ahem) are interviewed by-people-who-are-practically-Aussies-and-Kiwis? I have noted that those who are closest and yet different are often the best observers, for they are alike enough to understand nuance but separate enough to not be blinded by a common mindset.Richard (the man of a million or so legitimate passports) and Pete (just the one country, but Godzone) have lived/worked in the States. Just what are their perceptions? What are two very different (from the US-of-A) EPM markets like?I should note that Pete got me (I did do some of the work) the 2017 Best Kscope Essbase co-speaker award that I have always, always, always wanted. My oh my, did I want that, did I ever think I deserved it – yes, cruel ego as it was always unfulfilled – and I never did get it till Pete and I did a presentation on Hybrid Essbase. I will note that Pete has won multiple best speaker awards at Kscope, so I have a sneaking suspicion our joint award is 20% Cameron, 80% Pete but no matter, a win is a win. I should also note that Kscope 2017 was my last Oracle conference as a speaker, so it made the reward all the sweeter.Richard graciously was my host at Flinders Uni way back in (I think) 2012 as part of an ODTUG conference tour of the Antipodes and facilitated (orchestrated?) an ODI/Essbase presentation at NZOUG. My primary memory of that trip (I was in a constant state of jet lag) was dinner with Richard and a bunch of attendees and being stared at as a Real Life American geek, not commonly seen in the wild, sitting there eating his plate of spag bol, feeling more self-conscious than usual were that possible. Oh well, I like to provide entertainment to all, no matter the cost. Having the two of them on the show was and is a special treat. Not For The Faint of HeartFor those of delicate disposition, easily offended by adult words, mortally insulted by honest, open, and frank conversation, I fear you must put on your big boy/girl pants and buckle up. We Americans, cultural descendants of the Puritans, beseeched our guests to tone down the language lest you, Gentle Listener, get a case of the vapors. They mostly complied, but You Have Been Warned. That takes care of the North Americans; the rest of the world won't care. Sensitivities aside, as always our guests are witty, insightful, and extremely interesting.Join us, won't you?

The Broads return with a new season about castaways, explorers, and wanderers. We open with Fu Sang, the legendary land that some believe is Oregon...
I moved to New York in 2011, and ended up straight in Williamsburg, a neighborhood in the northern end of Brooklyn. The area had been Italian, then Polish, and was then colonized by artists in the early aughts, who opened a seemingly endless string of independent art spaces and music venues. As is so often the case, after the artists did the grunt work of occupying decaying warehouses and scratching their brand of culture into a dingy industrial sector, the developers swarmed. The area began filling slowly with professionals, lured by the waterfront views of the Manhattan skyline, reasonable commutes, and bohemian ethos. And, as is so often the case, the very thing that drew them there got squeezed out by more expensive rent. Venues began shuttering, first Zebulon, then Death by Audio, then Glasslands. Hugged to death by yuppies.
