Daytime swordfishing began in Venezuela when Aquiles Garcia and Captain Oscar Benito Marcano used a bag of rocks to get their bait down to where these prized fish swim in extreme depths during daylight hours. In 1997, on the La Guaira bank many Captains started to target these billfish with confidence. It wasn't refined until two brothers, Richard and Scott Stanczyk started to consistently catch them in the Florida Keys around 2002. But it was Richards son, Nick, that took the swordfish game to new heights catching an estimated 2,000 fish with a personal best of a 757lber. Nick grew up on the docks in the sport fish capital of the world (Islamorada) and began catching snappers before he could walk. He later attended the University of Miami but always knew he was going to make his living on the water. Nick has gained a massive audience in the last 8 years with social media and marketing himself as the guy that consistently catches broadbill swordfish. Currently he is taking more time off spending time with his family and growing his YouTube and Stanz fishing apparel line. Although, if you want to catch one of these monsters of the deep he still remains one of the top captains in this genre of fishing. In this episode we sit down with Kelsie Hancock who's fiancé, Capt Nick Losapio, was killed in Marine Corps MV-22 mishap in June of 2022. Nick was a graduate of Norwich University and had served in the United States Marine Corps for over eight years. Nick was on his way to fly at HMX-1 which is responsible for airlifting the President of the United States. I met Kelsie at the Guns Garin Memorial Golf tournament (GGMF) and for fortunate to learn a little bit about her and Nick. Thanks to GGMF for hosting me and E3 Aviation Association and allowing us to share the amazing work they are accomplishing. In the last 18 months the ⁠Guns Garin Memorial Foundation⁠ has given away over $150,000 to veteran families in need and are on track to give away their 20th flight school scholarship. They are passionately committed to their mission to care uniquely for veterans and their families, and inspire the next generation of pilots. Major Richard Charles “GUNS” Garin (Rick) was a loving, dedicated, and accomplished person who made the world a better place wherever he went. He was an incredible husband, father, brother, son, friend, and pilot. "Guns" was an F-16 Fighter Pilot/Weapons Officer at McEntire Air National Guard Base and passed away suddenly in July of 2020. Several of his friends and wife came together and founded GGMF. The Guns Garrin Memorial Foundation has two missions. First, we are here to support local military families during times of hardship. Nick Kalt is our guest in this episode of the Leadership Under Fire Optimizing Human Performance Podcast. Nick serves as a Captain with the Long Beach, California Fire Department. Prior to entering the professional fire service, Nick was a Captain in the United States Marine Corps. He was seriously wounded in the Battle of Fallujah in November 2004 while serving with 1st Combat Engineer Battalion and subsequently medically retired from the USMC. Nick is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis and was a collegiate All-American for the Midshipmen rugby team. He also serves as a Tactical Leadership Advisor for Leadership Under Fire.

When we’re on the fireground or other emergency scene, most of the time we work as a great team. We know what to do, how to do it and what to do when we’re done. Sure, from time-to-time we may wonder about a particular task we’ve been assigned, but for the most part, it’s smooth running. However, back in the firehouse, it’s often a different story. Each firefighter is encouraged to ask questions, bring up new topics and propose new ideas. Too often though, a newer or less-experienced firefighter’s ideas or thoughts are dismissed out-of-hand. Why? Frequently, it’s because of another “herd of elephants” in the room – the egos of some of those firefighters with more experience. My guest on this podcast is Capt. Nick Peppard of the Holley-Navarre Fire District in Santa Rosa County, FL, located on the beautiful Florida Panhandle. Nick discusses the scenario described above. The newer, less-experienced firefighters are too often shut down or told to hold their ideas to themselves, too often due to one or more, senior firefighters and the egos they have. As we discuss, there is no room in the fire service for egos; while one firefighter may have twenty years on the job and another has five, the ideas they share should be of equal value. Each and every firefighter should be included in every firehouse general discussion and, should be encouraged to ask questions or bring up an idea! Egos all too often not only get in the way of healthy discussion around the firehouse kitchen table or dayroom, they often get in the way of firefighters taking proper care of their health. They are so “eat up” with themselves, they believe they’re almost invincible! Sadly, especially when it comes to their health, when they finally admit they have a health problem, it’s often, too late. Make the change in YOUR firehouse: IDEAS Over Egos!
