Recorded at Metatopia Online 2020 Presented by Cat Tobin, Will Sobel, JR Blackwell, Christopher McGlothlin, Maz Hamilton. You're an RPG designer now! That's great, but now how do you get your awesome game in front of players who will appreciate it? How do you position yourself for future projects? Basically, how do you get your name on a game to mean something? Our panelists grapple with this sticky problem!
Recorded at Metatopia Online 2020 Presented by Cat Tobin, Becky Annison, Sharang Biswas. How to Design !More! !Drama! into your RPG! Some of the most satisfying role playing experiences come from the dramatic outcomes of emotional connections between player characters. We look at ways for tabletop and LARP writers to design for deeper character relationships and dynamics, to provide a structure for GMs to bring more of the good kind of drama to their RPGs
Recorded at Metatopia Online 2020 Presented by James Wallis, Cat Tobin, Kieron Gillen, Jacob Jaskov. We all know how certain games feel in play and how they make us feel, but as designers and critics we don't have a set of words to describe it. Do we need an experiential vocabulary of play, and what would one look like?
One of our favorite publishers is Pelgrane Press. Geek journalist extraordinaire Ben Riggs sat down with Pelgrane co-owner Cat Tobin to see what the publisher of 13th Age and Dracula Dossier is up to!

Recorded at Metatopia 2019 Presented by Jason Pitre, Cat Tobin, Amanda Valentine, Lauren McMannon, Camdon Wright. Everyone should have a chance to create and publish games. Unfortunately, there are many structural barriers keeping unrepresented voices from coming to the table. In this roundtable discussion, our panelists discuss ways that established publishers can support new voices through information, promotion, funding, and education.
Pelgrane Press has been a referent in the world of #TTRPGs for a very long time. They keep producing some amazing work and have some iconic games in their catalogue. But, who’s behind? That would be Cat Tobin! This video has been produced for www.gmsmagazine.com. Please help our channel by subscribing and commenting and support our Patreon Campaign if you can: https://www.patreon.com/gmsmagazine I got together with Cat to ask about how she runs Pelgrane and the ethos behind the company, including their approach to diversity, social justice and safety for everyone around the table. With giants of the RPG world like Ken Hite, Robin D. Laws, Rob Heinsoo and Gareth Ryder-Hanrahan, they have produced game powered by the Gumshoe system (Trail of Cthulhu, Ashen Stars, Bubblegumshoe, Cthulhu Confidential, The Esoterrorists, Fear Itself, The Gaenan reach, Mutant City Blues, Night’s Black Agents, Timewatch and The Fall of Delta Green), there is a big responsibility on her shoulders! Recorded at Metatopia 2019 Presented by Christopher O'Neill, Adriel Wilson, Cat Tobin, Misha Bushyager. Role playing as a HOBBY continues to evolve and mature. Has role-playing now gotten big enough to be considered a MEDIUM? Join us for a lively and passionate discussion on the concept that role-playing has become more than just games, but a medium - a channel for communication, information, and entertainment. In this panel, we will look at whether role-playing is a medium, and if so, what that means for our hobby. The panelists all represent different aspects of designing and publishing role playing games and bring diverse and interesting points of view around the topic.
Tabletop RPG industry myths and mistakes are tackled on the podcast today by Pelgrane Press CEO Cat Tobin. What is the RPG industry like? How do you get a job in the RPG industry? How do you self-publish content for existing company products? We touch on all of those topics and more. We also discuss how Cat was introduced to role-playing games and how she began working for Pelgrane Press. Plus she gives us a window into what she does in her role at Pelgrane Press.

Recorded at Metatopia 2018 Presented by Jim McClure, Kenneth Hite, Cat Tobin. This panel is designed to help you establish the best way to present your game to consumers. From Elevator pitches, to focus points, to mechanical highlights, we will cover what is most important in getting people to buy into your game. Attendees should be prepared to discuss their game project as part of a group, and have an elevator pitch pre-prepared. The panelists will then help each individual attendee to hone their presentation.
Recorded at Metatopia 2018 Presented by Steve Segedy, Christopher Badell, Mark Richardson, and Cat Tobin. Once you've created a game, what are your options for getting it out into the world? Come ask questions and find out about printing, distribution, and fulfillment options for independent designers and small publishers. We could also include discussion of Kickstarter, BackerKit, contracts, licensing, etc.
Campus Crier Have you guys seen The Birch on Facebook Watch yet? It’s a great horror story available exclusively on Facebook, and it’s produced in partnership with CryptTV, (who have a channel on YouTube). There are five episodes so far; each is about 18 minutes long. I like the way they are telling the story. Episode 1 introduces our main character and sets up the world she lives in. Episode 2 suddenly introduces whole new characters, (without explanation at first), but then we learn that this is the origin story of the monster. Episode 3 returns to the world of our main character, but we relive events from Episode 1, but from the antagonist’s POV… which was cool. Episode 4 is more of the monster origin, and then Episode 5 is back with our protagonist as her story advances from where we really left off with her from Episode 1. It probably sounds confusing as I describe it, but it’s plays really well on screen. Robin D. Laws, Lynne Hardy, and Cat Tobin recently attended The Kraken convention, where they panelled the “Investigative Roleplaying Masterclass.” The panel is now available on YouTube; it’s a really great panel on structuring an investigative role playing game scenario. We highly recommend this video for anyone interested in writing an investigative adventure. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lLO-wjBOBNc&feature=share&fbclid=IwAR0t7besCI_4Uc-hwUSv1nk8VsJIfrERZ2gBQbsCV7kfUCkA9P8RsMNmZ9E A Cold Fire Within and Berlin the Wicked City have both been released in the special leatherette edition both featuring gold stamped covers. They are available through the Chaosium website only for $90 and $95 respectively. There is also a very favourable review of Berlin The Wicked City that has been released over on RPG.net. The conclusion sums it up: “Berlin - The Wicked city doesn't just present a new, impossibly alluring setting for original Call of Cthulhu adventures, but comes out as a treatise on how to write sourcebook/adventure books. It is well-targeted, thoroughly researched, evocatively written, and as useful for gaming purposes as a supplement can be. It will soon rake in the awards and be hailed as a classic; there's no doubt about it.” Good friend of the show, and all around nice guy Dean Englehart has released the next segment in his popular Convicts and Cthulhu line called Ticket of Leave #15, Death Knells. It is written by Dean and Geoff Gillian and is available right now for free at the Cthulhu Reborn site. AuZtralia is an adventure/exploration board game by Stronghold Games for 1-4 players set in an alternate reality 1930s. Following the Restorationist war, the northern hemisphere lands lay poisoned and starvation was the norm. Intrepid adventurers set out to explore and settle new lands. Little did they know, after the war, the surviving Old Ones and their remaining loyal human armies made their way to the outback of Australia to lick their wounds. Riches from the land, mixed with darkness and insanity await you in the outback. Will humanity prevail or will the Old Ones wreak their revenge? Recorded at Metatopia 2018 Presented by Brian Neff, Darren Watts, Cat Tobin. There are a lot of people who will say that full-time jobs don't exist in the Gaming Industry. That is wrong. There are tons of ways to make a career out of making games. It involves working long hours and probably being underpaid, but they exist. Here's how to look for them, and how to prepare for them.

Ben’s book on RPG theory is finally available for purchase! Encounter Theory lays out Ben’s theory of adventure design. This chapter concerns TSR West, an effort by TSR to open an LA office devoted to producing comic books, an effort that failed rather impressively. It is the product of a dozen interviews with professionals from comics, gaming, and Hollywood, and as far as I can reckon, it is a tale entirely untold until now. Dragonmeet comes one more year and things are changing! Things are changing because they’re getting better and more interesting, which is why I thought it’d be a good idea to invite Cat Tobin, one of the organisers and masterminds who’ve put the show together to ask her about the new goodness coming in! This year there is a more comprehensive selection of seminars, traders role playing and board games organised, an art exhibition and a charity auction, this year promises to be really special. Hope you enjoy the interview and it inspires you to come to the show in London!
