For many Canadians, the May long weekend means the official kick-off of the summer travel season. And if you're out on a road trip, there's a good chance you may end up sailing down the Trans-Canada Highway. Mark Richardson wants us all to know the often overlooked stories that paved this roughly seven-and-a-half thousand kilometre road system. The automotive journalist speaks with Piya Chattopadhyay about the history, people and politics that shaped "Canada's Main Street", as he explores in his book The Drive Across Canada.
Host Piya Chattopadhyay speaks with The New York Times' Luke Broadwater and The Economist's Gregg Carlstrom about the impact of Donald Trump's visit to the Middle East, WIRED's Louise Mataskis and University of British Columbia's Muhammad Abdul-Mageed look at how AI translation tools may affect language learning, the Atlantic Council's Michael Bociurkiw helps make sense of the latest talks between Russia and Ukraine, automotive journalist Mark Richardson shares a history of the Trans-Canada Highway, and linguist Sali Tagliamonte surveys the factors that have shaped the language we use to describe summertime escapes.Discover more at https://www.cbc.ca/sunday

Mark Richardson is former Editor in Chief at Pitchfork and current Rock and Pop Critic at the Wall Street Journal. We talk about the 2011 album Bon Iver, Bon Iver, for which Mark wrote the Pitchfork review (9.5). We talk about the anticipation around this record, fusing adult-contemporary and the avant-garde, Animal Collective, Bonnie Raitt, 80s R&B, sincerity vs. irony, is this “sad” music?, a careful use of arrangement and dynamics, Heath Ledger, Shakespearian verse, “Holocene,” the albums' sequencing, the midwestern-ness of it all, Kanye West, commas in the album titles, Rubber Soul/Revolver, we bow down to “Beth/Rest,” a bit of SABLE, fABLE, and Mark tells a story about how this record could have gotten a 10. It's sometimes said that timing is everything and this week the pair investigate the mystery of rhythm, discovering why some of us might be better at staying in tempo. From the daily cycle of dawn and dusk to sea tides and circadian clocks, rhythm governs many aspects of our lives, and cognitive psychologist Dr Maria Witek says it makes sense we also place great importance on its presence in music. She specialises in ‘groove', or the feeling of pleasure associated with moving to a beat – and it's not just something the dancers among us enjoy; groove has even been used to treat patients with Parkinson's Disease.Neuroscientist Professor Nina Kraus has studied drummers' brains and found their neurons fire with more precision. She explains that teaching kids rhythm can improve their language and social skills. But no need to take her word for it, because Skunk Anansie's drummer Mark Richardson is in the studio to put Hannah to the test. Can she handle a high hat at the same time as a snare?Contributors: Dr Maria Witek, University of Birmingham Professor Nina Kraus, Northwestern University Mark Richardson, drummer with Skunk Anansie Producer: Marijke Peters Executive Producer: Alexandra Feachem A BBC Studios Audio Production

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the publication of the book Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance by Robert Pirsig. It's a peculiar book, especially for a bestseller. Not a lot of it is actually about zen or motorcycle maintenance, it combines a travelogue, a father/son story, and philosophical musings, and the structure of its narration makes it hard to follow. Thus, it's the kind of book people often buy, start, and then put down without finishing. That's initially what happened to Mark Richardson, an author and automotive journalist who was born in the UK but has lived most of his life in Canada. But when the book finally clicked for Mark, he was so inspired by it that he actually undertook Pirsig's motorcycle pilgrimage himself. Mark shares that story in Zen and Now, which intersperses stories from his own road trip with an exploration of Pirsig's life and famous book.If you've wanted to read Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, but haven't been able to get into it, today Mark will offer an introduction to what it's all about. We discuss Pirsig's ideas on the metaphysics of quality and our relationship to technology, and how he tried to combine the ethos of Eastern and Western thought into a unified philosophy of living. We also get into why Mark wanted to recreate Pirsig's road trip, the joys of traveling by motorcycle, and what Mark learned along the way.Resources Related to the PodcastZen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance: An Inquiry Into Values by Robert M.
