Today on TFB's Behind the Gun Podcast we've brought on Jessie also known as Boondock Ballistician. Jessie's full-time job lies within small arms testing and development. Jessie recently brought up a pretty interesting topic that piqued my interest as a pilot, which is how small arms are treated and tested to different standards when they're intended to be used and or primarily transported by military aircraft. As opposed to most ground-based operations, aircraft including helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft have to take into account many different flight-related factors that actually have a direct effect on the way projectiles, propellants, and even the firearms themselves operate and Jessie's day job is to find out where that breaking point is and help the military develop arms and ammunition that can be used in these intense aerial combat environments. While she's not a liberty to reveal the mysterious organization for which she does this work for, you can definitely check out her other work which includes some nitty gritty details she's learned from her day job over on her YouTube Channel BoondockBallistician.

Delving into the shadowy realm of the small arms trade, we unravel a web of clandestine dealings and backroom deals that span the entire globe, arming insurgents, equipping terrorists, and bolstering criminal networks, thus creating some of the world's most volatile regions. As these weapons cross borders, both through legal and illegal means, their paths become increasingly complicated, yet the underlying fundamentals beneath the trade remain stubbornly rigid. In this deep dive, we seek to unpack the trends that drive the industry, identify which markets are currently hotbeds of small arms sales, and explore the nuanced dynamics that completely change the procurement patterns of cartels or regional insurgency groups. We unpack a hypothetical scenario of a theoretical insurgency group to demonstrate the unexpected challenges faced by these groups, with a panel of industry experts: On the panel this week: - Nicholas Marsh (PRIO) - Franz J. Ms. Izumi Nakamatsu is the United Nations Under-Secretary-General and High Representative for Disarmament Affairs. The Office for Disarmament Affairs (ODA) was established to work with and support United Nations member states to negotiate the peaceful uses of weapons of mass destruction to small arms. Currently, nine countries have nuclear weapons.  The risk of accidental or purposeful use of nuclear weapons is the highest it has been since the Korean War. The UN is striving to provide incentives to reduce the nuclear stockpiles, especially since nuclear weapons could destroy life on the planet. The Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty is a cornerstone to encourage non-nuclear states to use technology for peaceful purposes and the nuclear powers to reduce their stockpiles. The policy of No First Use has been under discussion for years. In order to reduce the potential nuclear risks, it is critical to involve women and youth in the decision-making process to help solve these thorny problems.

Episode discussion topics The second amendment: One highly charged sentence of 27 words. "A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed." The original point of the amendment was about supporting a well-regulated militia, and for the people to bear arms for militia's sake. In the mindset of the times when it was written, our right to keep and bear arms was protected under the law so that the people were prepared for conscription. In Boston circa 1788, the militia was already called The National Guard. It had been established in 1636 for the protection of the colony and is now a fixture in all 50 states. You may find that they are generally well-regulated. The right for citizens to buy and hold weapons for private purposes, like self-defense, was read in by the courts and advanced through precedence after a series of decisions beginning in 2008 and onwards. Cornell Law School provides a nice synopsis of this evolution. The availability of military-grade weapons for private use would not have been in the state's interest. After all, the idea of mob rule was a constant concern and it was not common for farmers to own their own cannons. These arms were intended to be held for the militia, which was made up of the people to bear arms for militia's sake. At this moment in our history, circa 2022, the profit motive has been allowed to run rampant and the lobbies that stood to profit have done so. According to CBS News, gun makers tallied $1 billion in revenue over the last 10 years from AR-15s alone. Sending about the same amount on average to the healthcare industry out of citizens' pockets for each mass shooting event. A morbid relationship. Ours is the only country in the world with more civilian-owned firearms than there are people alive to hold them. 120 guns for every 100 citizens according to Bloomberg. Yemen followed with 52.8 per 100 residents. Canada had 34.7 and France and Germany both had 19.6, according to the Small Arms report. In countries like Japan and Indonesia, that number plunged to less than one. Calls to Action: Lobby our representatives to do what is right and proven to help solve the problem of gun violence in our country, as inspired by successes abroad: Banning semi-automatic and automatic weapons along with high capacity capabilities. Mandating gun registration. Requiring a reason to buy a gun. Established rules for storing guns. Increasing the minimum age for ownership to 21. Requiring periodic mental health evaluations where changes in status should affect access to guns. And since children potentially have access to these weapons at home, we should invest in their mental healthcare and monitoring for our common good. Your hosts: Michael V. Piscitelli and Raymond Wong Jr. More info All those statistics MVP rattled off are too much for the notes. We captured them here for you: CPP S3 E58 Bear Arms for Militias Sake cited_stats. We detail the actions of July 5 - July 20 1943 for Panzer-Regiment 39 "von Lauchert" and within, the two Panzer-Abteilungen 51 & 52 (Panther Abteilungen). Episode six, our bonus episode, we have the pleasure to speak with Senator Marilou McPhedron, with the Senate of Canada as she discussed Parliamentary Work in arms control, disarmament affairs and good practices in Parliament Our world is severely hit by the coronavirus pandemic. In this context, emotions, fake news and post-truth have gained traction. This is why it is important that policy-makers resort to the best available evidence to make the right policy decisions. This also applies to the field of arms control and disarmament. Evidence can be scientific research, but also statistical data, citizen voices, and evaluation evidence. Policy includes legislation but also oversight, resource allocation, regulations and strategies. All of these are of the utmost importance to design an arms control and disarmament policy followed by effective action and positive outcomes for people or for strengthening confidence in compliance with international obligations. To ensure that the use of evidence is embedded into a “business-as-usual” routine, several components need to be in place: First, Good quality, well-designed, and robust research evidence; Transparency and easy access to the data; A rationalised agenda, shifting from emotion-based to evidence-informed decisions for action For these steps to materialize, researchers and policymakers need to cooperate and make the most out of what they can provide. Examples can include: data on illicit arms trafficking to reach SDG16 targets; multi-stakeholder approaches to the biological risk; work on the verification of nuclear disarmament; research on potential new chemical weapons, etc. Our experts will now address how this requirement for evidence is relevant to various arms control and disarmament frameworks regarding both weapons of mass destruction (nuclear, biological and chemical), and conventional weapons. On the 22nd episode of Silah Report Podcast, we had a craftsman from Idlib as our guest, who has a long history fighting the SAA, not as an armed militant but as a gunsmith. Before the rebel pocket in Damascus fell to the SAA, he worked on manufacturing ammunition, weaponry, and even mortars for the resistance. Also, he worked on hydro-dipping rebels' firearms. Currently, he resides in Idlib and had a short-lived business project there in hydro dipping firearms. He agreed to be interviewed and to inform us about his journey specifically in that field, given that there are hundreds of photos for Syrian rebels with painted firearms floating throughout the internet and it is quite common now to see an AK pattern rifle with complete camouflage on it. We in Silah Report wanted to know more about the industry and the people involved in it. Campus Crier Have you guys seen The Birch on Facebook Watch yet? It’s a great horror story available exclusively on Facebook, and it’s produced in partnership with CryptTV, (who have a channel on YouTube). There are five episodes so far; each is about 18 minutes long. I like the way they are telling the story. Episode 1 introduces our main character and sets up the world she lives in. Episode 2 suddenly introduces whole new characters, (without explanation at first), but then we learn that this is the origin story of the monster. Episode 3 returns to the world of our main character, but we relive events from Episode 1, but from the antagonist’s POV… which was cool. Episode 4 is more of the monster origin, and then Episode 5 is back with our protagonist as her story advances from where we really left off with her from Episode 1. It probably sounds confusing as I describe it, but it’s plays really well on screen.  Robin D. Laws, Lynne Hardy, and Cat Tobin recently attended The Kraken convention, where they panelled the “Investigative Roleplaying Masterclass.” The panel is now available on YouTube; it’s a really great panel on structuring an investigative role playing game scenario. We highly recommend this video for anyone interested in writing an investigative adventure.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lLO-wjBOBNc&feature=share&fbclid=IwAR0t7besCI_4Uc-hwUSv1nk8VsJIfrERZ2gBQbsCV7kfUCkA9P8RsMNmZ9E A Cold Fire Within and Berlin the Wicked City have both been released in the special leatherette edition both featuring gold stamped covers. They are available through the Chaosium website only for $90 and $95 respectively. There is also a very favourable review of Berlin The Wicked City that has been released over on RPG.net. The conclusion sums it up: “Berlin - The Wicked city doesn't just present a new, impossibly alluring setting for original Call of Cthulhu adventures, but comes out as a treatise on how to write sourcebook/adventure books. It is well-targeted, thoroughly researched, evocatively written, and as useful for gaming purposes as a supplement can be. It will soon rake in the awards and be hailed as a classic; there's no doubt about it.” Good friend of the show, and all around nice guy Dean Englehart has released the next segment in his popular Convicts and Cthulhu line called Ticket of Leave #15, Death Knells. It is written by Dean and Geoff Gillian and is available right now for free at the Cthulhu Reborn site. AuZtralia is an adventure/exploration board game by Stronghold Games for 1-4 players set in an alternate reality 1930s. Following the Restorationist war, the northern hemisphere lands lay poisoned and starvation was the norm. Intrepid adventurers set out to explore and settle new lands. Little did they know, after the war, the surviving Old Ones and their remaining loyal human armies made their way to the outback of Australia to lick their wounds. Australia shares a similar history and culture to our own. But yet after the Port Arthur massacre in 1996, Australians came to see the need for gun regulation very differently. ISDA Secure Transportation and Executive Protection News Podcast for Thursday, October 25th, 2018 ====================== In Vehicle News From Ars Technica How driver-assist tech can result in a $5,000 fender-bender Cars with advanced driver-assistance technology are more expensive to repair than their less-autonomous counterparts, according to a study by AAA. What would have been relatively inexpensive bodywork due to a fender bender may end up costing two and a half times as much to repair, due to the location of cameras along with ultrasonic and radar sensors. "Advanced safety systems are much more common today, with many coming as standard equipment, even on base models,” said John Nielsen, AAA’s managing director of Automotive Engineering and Repair. “It’s critical that drivers understand what technology their vehicle has, how it performs and how much it could cost to repair should something happen." It's not just the parts, either. A rock hitting your windshield will require the camera used for adaptive cruise control to be recalibrated. And you'll likely have to pay more for the replacement windshield, as some manufacturers have more stringent standards for optical clarity. What would otherwise be a $500 windshield replacement can end up costing as much as $1,500. AAA has broken down some of the extra costs for cars with advanced driver-assist technology: Front radar sensors used with automatic emergency braking and adaptive cruise control systems: $900 to $1,300 Rear radar sensors used with blind spot monitoring and rear cross traffic alert systems: $850 to $2,050 Front camera sensors used with automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning and lane keeping systems (does not include the cost of a replacement windshield): $850 to $1,900 Front, side mirror, or rear camera sensors used with around-view systems: $500 to $1,100 Front or rear ultrasonic sensors used with parking assist systems: $500 to $1,300 https://arstechnica.com/cars/2018/10/why-driver-assist-tech-can-lead-to-the-5000-fender-bender/ ====================== In Security News From Huffington Post How Investigators Will Work To Find Out Who’s Behind The Bomb Scare Pipe bombs were sent to several prominent Democrats, including former President Barack Obama and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. From Washington to New York to Florida to Los Angeles, the authorities intercepted a wave of crudely built devices that were contained in manila envelopes. In the center of Manhattan, the Time Warner Center was evacuated because of a pipe bomb sent to CNN, which has its New York offices there. It was addressed to John Brennan, a critic of President Trump who served as Obama's CIA director. Pipe bombs were also intercepted in Florida and Los Angeles. The devices stashed in manila envelopes and mailed nationwide targeted top Democrats two weeks before the midterm elections. The bombs found this week were intended for at least seven officials, including Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.). Law enforcement officials have also tracked down another suspicious package sent to former Vice President Joe Biden, and the FBI says additional packages may have been mailed to other locations. None of the bombs detonated and no one was injured.  The packages contained pipe bombs that appear to have been made with relatively rudimentary materials. Authorities have confirmed that a number of them contained explosive powder. There is no shortage of theories about who might be behind the plot. Instead of relying on conjecture, investigators will be looking for clear evidence to help them nail down a culprit, said David Chipman, a former ATF agent who worked on the 1993 World Trade Center attack and the Oklahoma City bombing and now serves as senior policy adviser at the Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence. It’s not yet clear if the devices recovered this week will contain that sort of calling card, or whether the investigation will end up supporting claims that this was indeed a deliberate act of political terror against liberal political figures. Whatever authorities uncover, the plot is deeply concerning, said Chipman. https://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/bomb-scare-investigation-evidence_us_5bd0af0fe4b055bc9487a922 ====================== In Terrorism News From Palm Beach Daily News Terrorism talk kicks off World Affairs Council season You have a better chance of being struck by lightning twice than being killed by a terrorist. That was what Georgia State University professor Mia Bloom informed a crowd of 115 people Tuesday at The Colony at the season-opening event for the World Affairs Council of Palm Beach. In her discussion, “Small Arms: Children in Terrorism,” Bloom covered a variety of topics, including the indoctrination of women and children, often called “cubs,” into terrorism; how the general population fetishizes terrorism; and and the motivations for recruiting women into terrorist groups. Her research on the last subject, funded by the U.S. Department of Defense, with John Horgan will be published in their book, also called “Small Arms,” due out May 15. In addition to teaching communication and Middle East studies, Bloom monitors terrorist groups on social media and how they are recruiting people. Using her knowledge of Arabic, she has been able to create anonymous accounts and post on social media, she said. Bloom pointed out that 30 to 40 percent of ISIS messaging is positive, and that many women who end up getting involved are not in prison or involved in gangs. “Terrorists play on people’s altruistic tendencies,” she said. “People join because they think they’re going to help people.” Once these women see the real mission and realize this isn’t what they signed up for, they end up getting killed, she said. According to Bloom, the face of terrorism was male for a long time, but it has changed. Leftist organizations such as the Provisional Irish Republican Army were recruiting women as early as the 1970s, serving mainly as front-line activists. Nowadays, women can play roles in all levels of a terrorist organization, whether they’re logisticians, fundraisers or online recruiters.   https://www.palmbeachdailynews.com/news/20181025/terrorism-talk-kicks-off-world-affairs-council-season ====================== In Business of Executive Protection News From Strategic Marketing Solutions Cyfe – The All in One Business Dashboard Cyfe is an all in one dashboard for your business that connects to tens of different data connections. The programme has developed an ever larger pool of information that was initially scarce and unsystematic, but now can provide increasingly accurate and up-to-date knowledge of small arms and light weapon holdings. Caustic Soda

Mike T. joins Joe, Toren, and Kevin to talk about small arms -- firearms carried by an individual soldier. From the "grenade on a stick" beginnings of the fire lance all the way to caseless ammunition, Caustic Soda covers the history and science of these small arms, and even manages to talk about some of their favorite depictions of firearms in pop culture.
