In 1688 the Stuart King James II was ousted from the throne by his daughter Mary and her husband William of Orange, in what is called the Glorious Revolution. This momentous change would set in motion decades of unrest across the British Isles, as the supporters of James Stuart; his son the ‘Old Pretender' James, and his flamboyant grandson, ‘Bonnie Prince Charlie', both exiled in France and Italy, sought to restore them to the throne of Britain. In Scotland especially, the hereditary home of the Stuarts, rebellion was constantly brewing amongst the Scottish clans, where demands by the English king for them to bend the knee would result in the bloody massacre of Glencoe…finally, with time passing and the momentum of the Stuart cause fading, the Young Pretender; Bonnie Prince Charlie, took up his family's struggle and sailed to Scotland to reclaim his father's crown….the storm clouds of revolt were brewing. What would be Scotland's fate, and indeed that of Britain? In today's episode, William and Anita are joined by historian Jacqueline Riding to discuss the Jacobites and their fight to restore the Stuarts to the British throne, in the build up to the cataclysmic Battle of Culloden… To fill out the survey: survey.empirepoduk.com To buy William's book: https://coles-books.co.uk/the-golden-road-by-william-dalrymple-signed-edition Twitter: @Empirepoduk Email: empirepoduk@gmail.com Goalhangerpodcasts.com Assistant Producer: Tabby Syrett Producer: Callum Hill Exec Producer: Neil Fearn Learn more about your ad choices. We continue our mini series on maritime disasters with HMS Gloucester a British warship lost in the spring of 1682 off the Norfolk coast. It's quite a story: here is a ship with an impressive career that takes us from her end on that sandbar in Norfolk all the way to the British presence in the Caribbean during the Cromwellian Commonwealth – a key moment in global history. Her later career was intricately linked with the troubled history of the Stuart monarchy and when she sank one of those on board was none other than James Stuart, the future James II. The wreck was recently discovered off Norfolk and to find out more Dr Sam Willis spoke with Dr Benjamin Redding - Senior Research Associate on the Gloucester Project at the University of East Anglia. Together with Professor Claire Jowitt, he is writing a cradle-to-grave history of this most historically and culturally significant seventeenth century warship. This episode continues our mini series on maritime disasters: if you haven't heard any of these so far do please check them out – we have covered so many extraordinary stories including the shocking wreck of the mighty Vasa in the seventeenth century, that magnificent ship that sank on its maiden voyage within sight of shore; the ss Waratah, a huge passenger liner that simply vanished in 1909; Preussen, the enormous and only five-masted full-rigged merchant ship ever built which sank in the English channel in 1910; the early submarine the HL Hunley which holds the record for the vessel being sunk the most times….and so much more! I should add here that we are also working on a future episode on the wreck of the Batavia – a dutch vessel which ran aground off western Australia in the summer of 1629 leading to one of the most appalling horror stories in all of history let alone all of maritime history… Hosted on Acast. The true star in this portrait is his gorgeous greyhound. Van Dyck reveals himself as a master of realism with his uncanny portrayal of Stuart's dog. Whenever I see this painting it's the greyhound that holds my attention. How did Van Dyck get the fur so subtle and soft while also giving the dog's musculature such definition? Even with all the finery and fanfare atop James Stuart, the greyhound steals the show in a naked and natural state. Read LadyKflo's collected works. William III (1689-1702) had limited interest in the affairs of England, Scotland and Ireland. His interest lay in keeping the King of France at bay and would use England as weapon to achieve his goals. It was perhaps the king's indifference that allowed parliament to gain permanent supremacy over the nation leading to a remarkable transformation in the political and religious affairs of England. During William's reign, along with Mary II (1689-94) the parliamentary state was established, to this day it remains the enduring feature of the British political system. The end of James Stuart's reign over Scotland and England was no more impressive than the earlier part. One of the wonderful, crazy and ultimately futile episodes was the 'Spanish Match', involving the future Charles I and his father's favourite, the future Duke of Buckingham, travelling to Madrid to try and grab a bride for Charles. An attempt which involved a bit of stalking, understandably rejected by the lady involved. And it was a total failure, unsurprisingly. And yet... Charles was greeted by cheering crowds on his return to England. James as diplomat. A Nightrider episode. The narrative takes us to James' death. But first James attempts to hear cases like Daenerys Stormborn, knights cuts of beef, gives knighthoods to those who don’t want them and fines those who refuse them, raises money through forced “donations,” commits a classic diplomatic blunder and allows the craziest of royal marriage proposals. The proposal would be soon regretted, but at least all parties survived. The farcical pattern in the Stuart monarchy is developed, as prelude to the tragedies to follow in Episode 42.Charles and Buckingham’s romantic, antic, incognito trip to Madrid is covered in some detail as the subsequent switch from a peace policy to a war policy seemed to be largely based upon this as shallow and trivial as that sounds.

James Stuart VI of Scotland becomes James I of England after the death of Elizabeth. We discuss the causes of the English Civil War and some of the ways the Stuart kings may have contributed to that upheaval. A Valkyrie episode. This is mainly a narrative history of James I reign in England though we do spend some time with his grand romantic gesture in the “rescue” of Anne of Denmark and the witches that caused the disaster. The poisoning of Thomas Overbury, the legally established virginity of Francis Howard are also explored. We end with George Villiers running the government. This is background for later episodes where the division between crown and country will be stressed. In a more serious segment we explore Puritan psychology, an advanced mode of thought for the 17th century, one that explains a lot of their later success. This will be developed and built upon over several episodes.

www.commsolutionsmn.com- When we last left you, Minneapolis was being burned to the ground. Rioters were running rampant through the city. In just a week, the riots spread across the nation, and protests are being heard around the world. We watched our city burn, minority business owners lose their business, and our elected politicians sit on their hands until it was too late. Even now, they continue to pander, even with proof that radical anarchist groups like Antifa are fomenting so much of this violence. What grand strategy is Minneapolis proposing to fix all of this? To dismantle the Minneapolis Police Department! Are they insane? Don't answer that. Minneapolis is going to lose business, conventions, sports revenue, and more. The council has a veto proof majority to do this, and there is nothing Mayor Jacob Frey will be able to do about it. To top it off, Anoka County Sheriff, James Stuart, has already stated on Twitter that he won't come bail them out if they go forward with this. If this starts, where does it end? The Mayor of Los Angeles just took $150 Million away from the LAPD. This country is on the quick slide to lawlesness. We are discussing leaving our citizens in our cities defenseless. We will be first in line to condemn police officers that use unnecessary force. That stuff's got to stop. Most officers aren't like that though. There's got to be something we can do, and we need to act quick. We have to organize at the ballot box around our local elections. The time to ignore them is over. We need candidates. Fortunate thing... that's our specialty. Have you checked out our Spotify playlist? SURVIVAL OF THE BLOOD by Beth Bristow Charles Stuart came to Scotland seeking support to dethrone England’s King George II and replace him with his father, James Stuart. If the Highlanders will join his uprising, his promise to them is freedom from English tyranny, as well as guns, artillery and provisions for the battle. However, when the Battle of Culloden began, weary Highlanders had no weapons or food. They faced the King’s British Army who were trained, armed and ready for battle. Those Highlanders who were not killed were taken prisoner. Janet Cameron’s husband Ewan, captured by British soldiers has died. Janet, unaware of his death, desperately searches for him. Barely escaping capture themselves, Janet and her six-year old nephew, Daniel Cameron, must return to the ruins of their Highland home where the family’s inheritance is hidden. Janet fears Daniel is the last surviving male of the Highland Cameron Clan. Their trip will be a perilous one as the King’s son, The Duke of Cumberland, called “The Butcher” has given orders to find and kill all Highlanders. Thousands of the King’s soldiers, determined to find and capture Charles Edward Stuart, are searching the Highlands. Janet must return home to uncover what is rightfully hers in order to survive and protect the dying Cameron Highlander line. Beth was born in south west Missouri where she graduated High school and attended Missouri State College. After moving to Seattle Washington, Beth worked for that state as a Social Worker. She returned to West Plains and served as City Clerk for five years, finally returning to Social Work for the State of Missouri, specializing in Adoption until she retired. Beth and her husband owned and operated three Sylvan Learning Centers during the first few years of the 21st Century, finally retiring again in 2009. Now she and husband Ken lead small groups on tours to Scotland and Ireland. During her travels in Scotland she became aware of a kindred spirit and found out she had Scottish heritage on both parents’ sides. She is an avid reader and started studying Scottish history which she came to love and which led to her writing her first historic novel “Survival of the Blood”, a story about the last Jacobite uprising and its’ fateful end. A sequel, “Tragedy of the Blood” came into being and was published in December 2019. Right now she is researching a third novel about life during the early years of settlement in Australia. During her free time, she delights her 7,000 followers with short stories on her Facebook blog “Scotland, Beloved Country”. Rory is still missing, of course, but Jordan, Frank, and Scape muddle through somehow. From discussions of cockroaches and kennels to the theory behind doing Where Are They Now In History, they talk about stuff... and it often comes back to Rory. Featuring: Decker and Hayes, Series 2, Episode 2: "Shadows of Gotham City", where the two investigations the ladies are on both become more complicated... and bloody; Rory St. John's This Day in History and update Where Are They Now In History, this time showing the surrender of New Amsterdam to the British; Tract or Fiction?, Series 2, Episode 06: "Baby Talk", examining the rights and wrongs involved in the abortion issue; a Frank Allen Interview with James Stuart, one time Duke of York and King James II of England; Guard Duty, Series 3, Episode 1: "Mourning People", featuring Voodoo Lady and Mister Fahrenheit talking after Ocean Man's funeral service; more of your very own Listener Mail, mostly contentious; embittered epistles for the hosts.
