West Side hip-hop collective Pivot Gang (AKA Saba, Joseph Chilliams, MFnMelo, Frsh Waters and Dae Dae) stopped by Lollapalooza on August 2 to present young artists on the T.I.P. Fest pop-up stage, hosted by John Walt Foundation. The four featured artists — Nae Chic, Jonathan, Queen and Zia Jenaye — were awarded the opportunity during the nonprofit's annual T.I.P. (Teens in the Park) Fest, a city-wide showcase of local artists, musicians and poets between the ages of 14 and 24. Pivot Gang met with Vocalo's Nudia Hernandez shortly after the pop-up set to discuss the importance of providing opportunities for young Chicago artists and musicians. They also delved into writing songs inspired by ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender' and new music in the works — some of which they plan to play at Vocalo's Summer Finale in Millennium Park next month. Pivot Gang will be performing for FREE at Vocalo's Summer Finale at Millenium Park on Friday, Sept. 20. Other performers include Marquis Hill, KAINA and DJ Lady D. RSVP not required. Dom Walker and his older brother Jamal Walker sit and discuss how they were able to develop the titles that they have for themselves with include but aren't limited to being a; Entrepreneur, Real Estate Investor, Husband, Father and now Author. In the first half of the show both Dom and Jamal go into detail about how they came into being Self-Made Entrepreneurs. They give insight on the different choices and career paths that they took in earlier stages of their lives which gave them the tools and experience to step out of their own and start their own respective businesses. Jamal goes into detail how his career started in music management for local Chicago Artists and then business consulting and party promoting which later turned into him starting his own company called "Millennium Age". The Company he started went from business consulting, to now cultivating and developing their own events and parties which he decided to bring his brother Dom into the mixed and they eventually moved to LA in 2015 and everything then took off from there. Once they moved out to LA they saw the success they were able to make in the business of throwing their own parties and events, so decided to branch out to other states and expand their audition, to the point they have been able to throw very successful parties and events in almost 40 other cities. After the "Smoke Break" Tun brings up the topic of Real Estate, seeing as Dom wrote a book entitled "Don't Wait, Buy Real Estate". Tun wanted to be able to pick his brain about the ins and outs of Real Estate and why he wrote the book. Dom drops some serious numbers along with his experience and his advice about getting into Real Estate and what inspired him to get into Real Estate in the first place. Along with Dom and Jamal dropping some very insightful information, Tun switches gears a bit and gets more personal with the two brothers, when he asks each of them to tell an embarrassing story about one another, which was quit interesting seeing as neither of the two wanted to embarrass the other. Curated by Dr. Romi Crawford (School of the Art Institute and Co-Chair of the Chicago Film Archives), each event consists of a screening followed by a brief response by a local filmmaker, artist, or scholar. The first two installments of this series will take place at Black Cinema House, while the third and final screening will be held at the Chicago Cultural Center and also in collaboration with Chicago Film Archives. Part III: The Matter of City Life will include: ·      Manhatta (Paul Strand and Charles Sheeler, 1921)    An experimental film comprised of 65 shots, which evoke the progression of a day in New York City;   ·      Études sur Paris (André Sauvage, 1928). Considered a “city symphony” film of Paris in the 1920s. It offers a poetic and experimental portrait of the city;   ·      Bronzeville selections from the Don McIlvaine Collection (In collaboration with Chicago Film Archives). Short film clips shot by Chicago artist and muralist Don McIlvaine featuring scenes from the city of Chicago still under development.     Originating at the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University, Archibald Motley: Jazz Age Modernist was curated by Dr. Richard J. Powell, John Spencer Bassett Professor of Art and Art History at Duke.
