Located in downtown Chicago, the Chicago Athletic Association Hotel is a beautifully restored property, originally built in 1893 as an exclusive athletic and social club. Now part of Hyatt's Unbound Collection, it offers unique features that make it a memorable choice for travelers.Raya provides a detailed account of her stay, including her room upgrade to the spacious Founder's Suite, which featured two fireplaces, a dining area, and views of Millennium Park. She also touches on the hotel's blend of classic and modern amenities, from the Game Room, where guests can enjoy shuffleboard and pool, to the historic Milk Room, once a Prohibition-era speakeasy, now serving breakfast and coffee. The hotel's Shake Shack in the lobby and the rooftop bar with city views add to its charm, making the Chicago Athletic Association Hotel a unique stay in the heart of the city. The episode also includes practical advice for families managing work travel. Raya and Duane discuss the challenges of leaving family behind and share tips for keeping things running smoothly at home. They highlight the importance of meal planning, family support, and sticking to routines, which help make travel easier on both the traveling parent and the family at home. While the Chicago Athletic Association offers plenty of character and charm, the hosts note that it may be best suited for adults rather than young families due to its historical decor and lack of child-friendly amenities like a pool. I dedicate this podcast to Robert Pulley who has inspired multiple generations of artists in Columbus and beyond as an Arts teacher at Columbus North High School and as a professional sculptor. Mr. Pulley's work has been featured for over a year in front of the Fresh Start Recovery Center, the building that is the subject of this Haikast. Thank you, Mr. Pulley, for the generous sharing of your craft. It's a delight to garden around your sculpture. To learn more about Robert Pulley's work, visit www.robertpulley.com. (NOTE: The photo accompanying this episode includes the Fresh Start sculpture)Downtown Columbus does not have much greenspace. While there is Mill Race Park on the west side - hugging the river - it is literally across the tracks from downtown. Washington Street, the main street through the heart of downtown, lacks landscaped areas. The most notable flora are the callery pear trees lining the sidewalks for 7 blocks. They are celebrated for their rapid growth and abundant white blooms in early spring. Unfortunately, they smell bad while flowering, drop abundant mushy berries on cars and sidewalks in fall, easily break, and are short lived. And worse, they are an invasive tree species that easily spread to dominate public lands and poorly maintained properties. Being a native plant advocate, it was a dream of mine to find a place in downtown Columbus to feature a different landscape aesthetic. When approached by Landmark Columbus Foundation in 2020 to do just that, I jumped at the opportunity to write a grant to turn one of the only green spaces downtown into a native plant landscape. The property is at the corner of 7th and Washington, near the north end of the most heavily trafficked section of downtown. It hosts an old limestone building, over a century old, that was originally the post office. There have been many owners and uses over the years. Most recently, it was converted into the Fresh Start Recovery Center, owned by Volunteers of America, to support women recovering from opioid and other drug addictions. Pregnant women and mothers, along with their young children, are welcome for long term housing as they work towards sobriety. When I approached staff at Fresh Start, the supervisor immediately had the vision of the project providing opportunities for horticulture therapy for the women staying at the shelter. So after signing a Memorandum of Understanding, acquiring grants, hiring a landscape architect, renting a sod cutter, purchasing plants, and recruiting volunteers, we were ready to transform the turf grass surrounding the beautiful building. On the United Way Day of Caring in May 2021, a TV crew showed up, the volunteers poured in, and the installation was installed within 8 hours. Now butterfly weed, coreopsis, New Jersey tea, spicebush, blue mistflower, columbine, prairie dropseed, and other native plants are thriving.Native landscapes, while they may appear intimidating to maintain, are actually relatively easy to manage. Native plants have evolved to our local environment over thousands of years, and are an important part of healthy local habitats. In their native region, they are the most sustainable plants, growing deep roots and rarely requiring extra water or fertilizer. And almost all native plants are perennial, meaning that you don't have to plant them over and over each year by seed or with plugs purchased from a store. After they are established, the primary maintenance is pruning when they get a bit unwieldy and adding mulch to suppress unwanted weeds.Around the time of the original planting, I helped host a documentary of a film called “5 Seasons” about the landscape architect, Piet Oudolf. He is most well known for the High Line trail in New York City and the Lurie Gardens at Millennium Park in Chicago. Piet is credited for starting the “New Perennial Movement,” focusing on the structure of plants throughout the year - appreciating not just the color of flowers,

Is it a flower? Flames? No, it's a music venue! When the Jay Pritzker Pavilion opened in Millennium Park, many people struggled to describe the venue. Despite the debate over the shape, you'll rarely hear the structure described as a lousy place for a concert. Reset met up with our resident architecture sleuth, Dennis Rodkin, to understand how the open-air design still creates the sound of an indoor concert. For a full archive of Reset interviews, head over to wbez.org/reset.

Actor and Vocalist Andrew Sa has earned the title of Chicago's premiere queer country crooner. Sa's career has always been rooted in songwriting that highlights his easy and elegant voice, but when he met mentor and pioneer Patrick Hagerty of Lavender Country, “Lonesome Andrew” was born. Diving headfirst into the catalogs of Elvis Presley, Roy Orbison, and other classic songwriters that defined his childhood, Sa easily slipped into this new but familiar persona. It wasn't long before all of Chicago was seeking out his voice. Sa quickly became the star of The Cosmic Country Showcase, an instant smash hit camp-country revue based out of the Hideout, a bar that has fostered many golden voices for decades. One of those legendary voices, Kelly Hogan (Mavis Staples, Neko Case), instantly recognized Sa's abilities and quickly the two were booking gigs across the city as a duo. The young and talented Liam Kazar (Tweedy, Marrow) also recruited Sa for a duet on his debut album Due North. Sa also created a stunning film, Andrew in Anotherland, which was a celebration of Chicago's many voices that accompanied a live revue at the prestigious public amphitheater Millennium Park. Audiences and fellow artists alike reveled in Sa's intra-generational appeal that, while timeless, is rooted in a definitively young, queer perspective. We believe all neighborhoods deserve to be covered in a meaningful way.We amplify positive stories, cover development and local school council meetings and serve as watchdogs in neighborhoods often ostracized by traditional news media.Ground-level coverageOur neighborhood-based reporters don't parachute in once to cover a story. They are in the neighborhoods they cover every day building relationships over time with neighbors. We believe this ground-level approach not only builds community but leads to a more accurate portrayal of a neighborhood.Stories that matter to you — every daySince our launch five years ago, we've published more than 25,000 stories from the neighborhoods, covered hundreds of community meetings and send daily and neighborhood newsletters to more than 130,000 Chicagoans. On Sunday, October 8, the penultimate World Marathon Major of 2023 kicks off through Millennium Park and through the streets of Chicago. The site of multiple American and world records, the Chicago Marathon is often considered one of the fastest courses in the United States and always draws strong domestic and international elite fields chasing fast times. Last year, the women's race saw an American record from Emily Sisson and the second-fastest performance of all time (at the time) from winner Ruth Chepngetich. Chicago's men's course record of 2:03:45 was the world record when it was set in 2013 by Dennis Kimetto and the women's course record of 2:14:04 set by Brigid Kosgei in 2019 was the world record until a few weeks ago – this is the place to run fast. The first wave of runners goes off at 8:30 a.m. E.T. (men and women start together). Right now, the forecast looks promising, with a low of 46F and a high of 57F. It'll be a little breezy with 10-15mph winds, but the looped Chicago course lined in many spots by high rises is relatively tolerant to wind. We could be in for some seriously special racing! CITIUS MAG's team (Chris Chavez, Kyle Merber and Declan Murray) will preview all the top storylines and athletes to watch. It's Thursday, May 4th, A.D. 2023. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark Christian college student killed in Uganda over his evangelism A Christian college student was killed in Uganda last month for sharing the gospel with Muslims. Jeremiah Mwanga was attending the Uganda Christian School of Professionals in northern Uganda. His friend told Morning Star News, “Jeremiah complained about messages from one of the students threatening to kill him for misleading Muslims by preaching to them the gospel of Christ as well as converting them to the Christian faith in the school.” The attack is the latest incident of persecution reported in the East African country. 120,000 Peruvians march for life Nearly, 120,000 people participated in a pro-life march last month in Peru. Abortion is illegal in most cases in Peru. By contrast, other South American countries like Argentina and Colombia have been legalizing the murder of unborn babies in recent years. Most of Peru's population identifies as Christian with 76% in the Catholic church and 14% identifying as Protestant. Chicago City Council pays $205,000 settlement to evangelists After years of litigation, the Chicago City Council finally agreed to a $205,000 settlement with four Christian evangelists two weeks ago. Back in 2018, security at Chicago's 24-acre Millennium Park prohibited four Wheaton College students with the Chicago Evangelism Team from sharing their faith at the park. The students filed a lawsuit in response. The case eventually led Chicago to rewrite its rules for Millennium Park, allowing more freedom for evangelists to preach and hand out literature. Multiple students in the case told World Magazine that they plan to put the money they received from the settlement into ministry. Jeremy Chong said, “I made a personal vow that I wouldn't keep a penny of it, and that I would use it all for the sake of the Gospel. My number one desire is to plant a Reformed church in Chicago.” Vermont promotes euthanasia tourism On Tuesday, Vermont became the first state to remove the residency requirement from its euthanasia law. Now, terminally ill people from out-of-state can come to Vermont to end their lives. Currently, 10 states allow medically-assisted suicide. Mary Hahn Beerworth with Vermont Right to Life said, “To be clear, [we] opposed the underlying concept behind assisted suicide and opposed the move to remove the residency requirement as there are still no safeguards that protect vulnerable patients from coercion.” Isaiah 59:7 says, “Their feet run to evil, and they make haste to shed innocent blood; their thoughts are thoughts of iniquity; wasting and destruction are in their paths.” Kansas: Your born sex is your sex Meanwhile, Kansas became the first state to define a person's sex as the biological sex at their birth. Lawmakers in the state passed the law last week, overriding a veto from Democratic Governor Laura Kelly. The law would respect God's distinction between male and female in restrooms, sports programs, locker rooms, prisons, and domestic violence shelters. Presbyterian Church (USA) lost 100 congregations last year The Presbyterian Church (USA) continued its decline last year, according to its latest statistics. The mainline Protestant denomination lost over 100 congregations and over 53,000 members last year. The PCUSA now has 1.140 million members, down from 2.5 million in 2000. A spokesperson for the denomination said their challenge is to “Look for new ways to engage and welcome young people into the fold. . . . We need to remind them that Jesus Christ is still in our midst and that means finding new, innovative ways to be church.” Apparently such innovations have included the denomination's support for abortion and sexually perverted lifestyles. Revelation 2:5 says, “Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent, and do the works you did at first. If not, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place, unless you repent.” Anniversary of the Apostle to Greenland And finally, this week is the anniversary of when Hans Egede set sail for Greenland to bring the Gospel to the Inuit people. Hans left Norway with his wife and four children in early May 1721. He established a mission on the island and began learning the language of the local people. The work was difficult and lonely. Hans and his sons, along with other missionaries, went along the coast of Greenland spreading the Bible to the Inuit people. Their work led to several mission and trading stations, books, maps, and the first dictionary of Greenlandic language. Hans' wife died on the mission field in 1734, and he returned to Denmark the next year. His son, Paul, carried on the work. By 1744, Paul had produced a translation of the four Gospels. By 1766, the whole Testament was translated. Hans Egede is known as the Apostle of Greenland for his work. He also founded the island's capital Godthåb, now called Nuuk. To this day, Greenland is predominantly Christian with over 95% of the population identifying as Protestant. “Everybody knows what's at the root of the chaos that we're seeing in Chicago, but no one wants to talk about it.” Jason shares his thoughts on the destruction that continues to plague the city of Chicago. Over the weekend, a social media-driven mob of teenagers took over Millennium Park, beating a woman on the sidewalk and attacking a bus driver. The mainstream media is ignoring the daily death toll in the Windy City. Meanwhile, in Kansas City, an 84-year-old man shot a teenager who mistakenly went to the wrong address, and the media is in full-blown meltdown mode due to the racial dynamics of the case. Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes issued a statement calling for “justice” for the shooting of Ralph Yarl. Has anyone in Chicago spoken out to condemn the violent black teens' attack on a white woman? Jason and “Fearless” contributor Delano Squires discuss the epidemic at the core of the violence that infects Chicago and communities all across the country: the destruction of the family. T.J. Moe joins the show to discuss the MLB pitcher who took to Twitter to shame United Airlines but ended up being ratioed himself. Coach Jason Brown checks in and is confronted over his ranking of Ray Lewis in NFL history. Plus, we discuss Draymond Green's latest ejection with NBA enthusiast Jordan Bowles. This is Garrison Hardie with your CrossPolitic Daily News Brief for Tuesday, April 18th, 2023. Monday’s remarks sought to highlight what McCarthy called Biden’s “irresponsible” economic policy after the speaker last month accused the commander-in-chief of being “missing in action” from debt ceiling talks. The speaker in March suggested cutting non-defense spending back to pre-inflationary levels and introducing more work requirements for some welfare programs. Biden rolled out a $6.9 trillion budget proposal the same month, which would have increased the national debt to $51 trillion over the next decade. In January, the federal government exceeded its roughly $31 trillion debt limit, halting its ability to borrow funds for programs like Social Security and Medicare. Congress last approved a debt ceiling increase in December 2021. Also in January, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said the federal borrowing limit will need to be increased by June of this year to prevent a default on America’s national debt. McCarthy said Biden’s unwillingness to negotiate as commander-in-chief differs greatly from his past openness to fiscal reform as a US senator and even as Barack Obama’s vice president. Both the White House and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) compared McCarthy’s push for spending cuts to “hostage-taking.” https://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/local/crime-and-courts/2-arrested-for-allegedly-operating-illegal-chinese-police-station-in-nyc-sources-say/4247736/ 2 Arrested for Allegedly Operating Illegal Chinese ‘Police Station' in NYC Two people have been arrested by the FBI on allegations they helped operate an illegal police station for the government of China in lower Manhattan. The two are charged with conspiring to act as agents for the Chinese government. The FBI said “Harry” Lu Jianwang, 61, of the Bronx, and Chen Jinping, 59, of Manhattan, were arrested Monday morning at their homes in New York City. "The defendants worked together to establish the first overseas police station in the United States on behalf of the Fuzhou branch of the (Ministry of Public Security)," the FBI said in a statement. In addition to the New York complaint, two other complaints were filed - one against 34 members of Beijing's Municipal Public Security Bureau, and another against a group of 10 people that includes eight Chinese government officials. The common thread in the three complaints - that the suspects allegedly worked to intimidate, harass and threaten "wanted" Chinese nationals inside the United States. Last November, the FBI said it was aware that China was operating a de facto police station in Manhattan, outside of proper procedure or authority, as part of global network of such outposts. It followed a Sept. 2022 investigation by a nongovernmental organization, Safeguard Defenders, which reported there were dozens of such centers worldwide conducting police operations. Chinese officials decried that characterization, saying the "service centers" were volunteer-run and had nothing to do with policing. But the New York Times reported in January that Chinese state media had explicitly described the centers as policing facilities, acting in other countries without collaborating with local authorities. The Times also reported that the FBI had searched the East Broadway facility in the fall of 2022. https://www.businessinsider.com/nancy-pelosi-campaign-pays-man-fundraising-text-lawsuit-2023-4 Pelosi campaign pays Illinois man $7,500 after he sued over 'invasive and harassing' fundraising texts An Illinois man is now $7,500 richer after accusing Nancy Pelosi of violating federal robocalling laws. In October 2022, a Bolingbrook, Illinois resident named Jorge Rojas filed a 13-page lawsuit in the US District Court for the Northern District of Illinois that accused the former speaker of the House and her campaign of violating the Telephone Consumer Protection Act of 1991. That law, which has been found to apply to text messages in addition to calls, applies restrictions to robocalling and requires telemarketers not to contact individuals who've placed themselves on the Do Not Call Registry. "As the Supreme Court has explained, Americans passionately disagree about many things," reads the introduction of Rojas's complaint. "But they are largely united in their disdain for robocalls." According to the suit, Rojas received 21 texts from Pelosi's campaign from November 2021 to July 2022 despite previously placing himself on the registry in 2008 to "obtain solitude from invasive and harassing telemarketing calls." He went on to argue that he "experienced frustration, annoyance, irritation, and a sense that his privacy has been invaded" by the texts. Arguing that the texts constituted "malicious, intentional, willful, reckless, wanton and negligent disregard" for his rights, Rojas sought at least $31,500 in damages from Pelosi's campaign, including $1,500 for each text received. But months later, on February 22, Rojas moved to dismiss the suit against Pelosi. And according to federal campaign finance disclosures made public on Friday, the dismissal came after Rojas received a $7,500 payment marked "Settlement" from Pelosi's congressional campaign. Rojas and Pelosi's campaign did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment. https://www.foxnews.com/us/teen-takeover-terrorizes-chicago-hundreds-children-destroy-property-attack-tourists ‘Teen Takeover’ terrorizes Chicago as hundreds of teenagers destroy property, attack tourists Hundreds of teenagers stormed the streets of downtown Chicago, smashing car windows, attacking bystanders and sending panicked tourists running from the sound of gunfire. Fox 32 cameras captured video of teenagers crowding the streets and police seeking to restore order to the area. Large groups of teens were seen blasting music from Bluetooth speakers and roaming in front of traffic, with some attempting to gain access to the city's Millennium Park, which is off-limits to those under 21 after certain hours, and the downtown Art Institute. Some teens in the group began jumping up and down on cars, smashing windows and attacking people inside. One woman told Fox 32 her husband was attacked from the driver side of his vehicle and beaten after a group of teens jumped up and down on the couple's windshield. The man was taken to a local hospital for treatment. Hundreds of police officers assisted by SWAT teams descended on downtown in an attempt to restore order as gunfire was reported multiple times amid the unfolding scene. Police were seen escorting frightened tourists back to their cars or hotels to escape the chaos, and traffic on Chicago's Michigan Avenue ground to a halt as police attempted to restore order. Police say a 6-year-old boy was shot in the arm near the Chicago Loop and a 17-year-old boy was shot in the leg. Both were taken to Northwestern Hospital and listed in fair condition, according to a report from WLS. Fox 32 reported that the chaos appeared to be another "Teen Takeover" of the city that was planned on social media, noting that a similar scene played out in Chicago last year. Some local reporters were on the scene to interview some by-standers, including a woman who’s husband was beaten in their car. 'Where are their parents?' Teens swarm downtown Chicago during violent, chaotic weekend-Play 0:53-1:23
Chicago has been named the murder capital of the United States for the last 11 years running. This comes as on Saturday evening, hundreds of hundreds of teenagers wreaked havoc in Downtown Chicago by smashing car windows, destroying both public and private property, setting cars on fire, and even attempting to enter Millennium Park—which then prompted a significant police response. There was even a shooting that resulted in multiple injuries. Two teenagers were wounded by the gunfire near the corner of Madison and Michigan. However, these problems—all of the homicides, violence, burglaries, and general lawlessness—are destroying Chicago's prospect of turning things around. That's because, after years of enduring these problems (including a district attorney who refused to prosecute shoplifters if they stole below a thousand dollars worth of merchandise), many companies are packing up. Tyson Foods, Boeing, Caterpillar, Citadel, and Highland Ventures are all moving out of the state. ⭕️ Sign up for our NEWSLETTER and stay in touch
The Democrats’ immediate politicization of mass shootings is not going to help at all. In fact, it makes serious prevention measures more difficult to discuss, because the partisan slander becomes the focus of debate. The racist mass murder in Buffalo was an act of pure, unmitigated evil. Everyone conservative feels that way, as does every American. There was also a shooting in a church in California- only one fatality resulted from it, as the parishioners were able to stop the shooter. And Buck was in Chicago over the weekend, in Millennium Park at the “bean,” with all the other tourists, and a fatal shooting happened there just hours later. Democrats need a wake up call about how to really tackle violent crime. Follow Clay & Buck on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/clayandbuckSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
