In this episode of The Tour Life, we sit down with Rich Jones, a Chicago-based MC known for his collaborations with Taylor Bennett, the Allies, and more. Rich shares stories from his music career, including how he was voted the second-best rapper in Chicago by the Chicago Reader in 2016, right behind Chance the Rapper. We dive into his creative process, life on the road, and the organic way he's built strong relationships within the music industry. We talk about the ups and downs of touring, including solo touring for the first time, navigating unexpected challenges, and the emotional rollercoaster of live performances. Rich opens up about learning to cultivate friendships and networks, and how they've helped him both personally and professionally, from saving on lodging to filling venues. He also reflects on the growth he's experienced as both an artist and individual, emphasizing the importance of self-encouragement alongside constructive self-criticism. Whether you're in the music business or simply a fan, Rich's optimistic yet grounded outlook will inspire you to embrace the unexpected twists of the creative journey. Key Takeaways: Relationships Matter: Cultivating friendships in the music industry happens naturally when you're present and active. The connections you make can offer both emotional and professional benefits, such as networking opportunities and support while on tour. Promotion is Key: Once you have a body of work, focus on promoting it creatively. Engaging your audience through various platforms, not just through music releases, can build anticipation and excitement. Stay Grounded: When you're frustrated, check in with yourself. If you're still passionate about what you're doing, the struggles are worth it. Don't lose sight of the positive aspects of your career. Stepping Stones: Smaller shows or seemingly unsuccessful moments can lead to greater opportunities down the road. Every step is part of the journey. Celebrate Yourself: Personal and artistic growth takes time. Remember to appreciate who you are and what you've accomplished. Self-love and self-encouragement are just as important as constructive criticism. On the PRmoment Podcast today, we're talking to Kwaku Aning,  Shanice Hoo Mills and Toni AdeolaFor those of you not aware of the Taylor Bennett Foundation - well, I'd suggest you should! It's an amazing charity that exists to encourage black, Asian and minority ethnic graduates to pursue a career in communications. It does this through its PR training programme, internships and mentoring programmes.Established by communications executive search firm Taylor Bennett in partnership with the University of East London and founding agency Brunswick in 2008, the Foundation seeks to address the need for greater diversity in the public relations sector. With the support of leading communication companies, The Taylor Bennett Foundation runs professional development programmes that provide participants with the knowledge, skill set and network required to pursue a successful career in communications. And what better way to celebrate the 15th birthday of the foundation than to chat with three recent alumni about the programme and how it has benefited their careers?Kwaku Aning is currently senior director at FTI Consulting and completed the Taylor Bennett Foundation programme in 2016.  Shanice Hoo Mills is the founder of PR firm Kallure, which she launched in 2019. MHP sponsored Shanice and Kwaku's Taylor Foundation intake. Toni Adeola is the global corporate affairs manager at Charlotte Tilbury Beauty. Previously, she worked at Brunswick for five years. Toni completed the Taylor Bennett program in 2017. Brunswick was the sponsor of Toni's intake of the programme. Before we start, if you haven't already, look at our new event PR Masterclass: The Agency Growth Forum. At this one event, 22 experts will give 11 Masterclasses on essential elements of managing a modern, profitable and successful PR firm. That's positive.”20 mins Kwaku outlines how PR employers out there can get involved with the scheme and potentially sponsor an intake,“They need to have an honest conversation with themselves first. Are they doing this for the right reasons…or are they doing it as an exercise to make themselves feel better.”“The comms industry still has a massive retention issue.”“It's diversity, inclusion but also having equity. ..the equity part of that is important.”27 mins Kwaku talks about what he learned on the programme that helped him the most in his career.“Once the programme was finished, I felt so confident in myself.”

As I start season five, I give much thought to what this season is. I'll call it life, because that is what happens when we are making plans. Life sometimes defies us, challenges us, yet what I have learned is that it teaches us to move forward and when we refuse to move forward is when we see and feel the challenges. I've learned to stop and ask why. Why am I going through this? What am I to learn? What is my lesson? I find life can be challenging when I want it to go in one direction, but that isn't what my heart and soul wants. As Roy T Bennett states from his book The Light of the Heart “Don't be pushed around by the fears in your mind. Be led by the dreams in your heart.” In this season, the theme is life and what we can make of it. The dreams we have. The people we love. Caring for ourselves and others. This is life, and it is a gift to cherish. Let go of anger, hate, anxiety, fear, depression, jealousy and resentment, but don't suppress them. Face them and let them go, so that you can be free. Your body will be grateful, those around you will see the lightness in your being. Be love and know that you have always been love. Here are a few quotes on love: Lao Tzu “Being deeply loved by someone gives you strength, while loving someone deeply gives you courage.” Rumi “Love will find its way through all languages on its own.” Jesus Christ “Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.” Dalai Lama “Love and compassion are necessities, not luxuries. Without them, humanity cannot survive.” Taylor Bennett of Thriveworks writes: Spiritual love can refer to love rooted in a spiritual connection that helps us find meaning and purpose in our lives. These spiritual loves can serves different purposes. Some are meant to walk with us through life, while others are meant to teach us lessons. Learning from these lessons can be challenging and taking responsibility for our actions is the first step into finding love for ourselves and others. I close this episode with another quote from Roy T Bennett “Believe in yourself. You are braver than you think, more talented than you know, and capable of more than you imagine.” Many blessings. "The biggest thing you can do as an artist is grow. And I always want my fans to grow with me and not just from a musical standpoint, but a life standpoint. So, I have to always feel at least open enough to express myself, and if it doesn't succeed, then at least I know one, it was authentic, but then two, in this situation, I feel like I'm having a lot of success because I'm doing what I love, I'm truly happy." - Taylor Bennett Produced by DJ Ninja Photo Credit: Taylor Bennett

On this week's Talkhouse Podcast, we've got what might seem at first to be an unusual pairing, but that has its genesis in some serious fandom: Taylor Bennett and Matt Johnson. Taylor Bennett is a musician, entrepreneur, and community activist who has helped guide the career of his older brother Chance the Rapper while also busting genres on his own records. Bennett is a restless musician, rarely content to make the same moves twice. He raps and sings, and has proudly been sample-free on his last few records. A few years back, he released Be Yourself, a manifesto of sorts that championed inclusivity and positivity—he also told the world around the same time that he's proudly bisexual. For this year's Coming of Age, Bennett once again found inspiration in all different kinds of music, even bringing in some guests from various areas on the musical spectrum. One guest he was particularly excited to work with was Matt Johnson of Matt and Kim, the New York indie duo behind some of the past two decades' most invigorating songs. Johnson contributed vocals to “Kick Back,” from Coming of Age—check out that song right here. As I said, Matt Johnson is half of Matt and Kim—you can probably guess which half—the life-affirming duo behind one really big hit, “Daylight,” a breakthrough music video that you'll hear about in this chat, the end-credits song in a Lego movie, and perhaps most importantly, the sort of we-did-it-our-way career that should be the envy of their peers. Matt and Kim have released six albums in their two decades together, and they've built a relationship with their audience through undeniably joyous live shows and a sense of gratitude you don't always see in bands. Their energy is, to use a true rock cliche, infectious, and it's a big part of their appeal—along with damn catchy songs, of course. The inability to get out in front of his fans has made Matt a little itchy over the past couple of years, which you'll hear about in this chat. Johnson and Bennett also talk about giant dildos in this podcast, so prepare yourself for that. If that's not enough to pique your interest, the two also talk about trying to separate the art from the artist, about the real reason to remain independent, and about what it's like to get completely naked in Times Square in the dead of winter for a video shoot. It's a lot of fun, and I hope you enjoy listening to it as much as I did. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Taylor Bennett and Matt Johnson for chatting. Let's build a brand that can withstand the tests of time. Taylor Bennett, CEO of MESH, is this week's guest on The Patty-G Show. We sat and chatted with Taylor about his journey and experience in the marketing world. From his start with a pre-existing firm, there came a point in his life when he knew he wanted to do more, to take on more, and to build something of his own. This resulted in the creation of MESH. Through the small origins of his living room to now a full office operation with several satellite offices around the country, MESH has become a household name in the area. With the idea of brand building we took a deep dive into what that really means and how the creative concepts are utilized differently depending on each client's needs. Taylor and Patty-G go on to discuss how MESH is able to maintain its growth without losing the ability to serve those existing clients. All of this is just the surface level of what is contained within this week's episode. We hope you enjoy! If you are loving The Patty-G Show, we would be forever grateful if you could help the show continue to grow by leaving a review wherever you listen to podcasts and helping spread the word by sharing the show with your friends. Casey is an entertainment and digital media law attorney who helps influencers and creative entrepreneurs who struggle with navigating the legal side of their businesses and brands, specifically as it relates to contracts. She prides herself on helping creatives negotiate fair deals with Fortune 500 companies and leading entertainment brands, all while helping them build legally sound businesses that are built for generational wealth and impact. Here on the podcast, she normally does that by sharing the stories of successful entrepreneurs and influencers to help you learn from their mistakes. But occasionally, like today, switches things up and highlights popular culture.    Subscribe Website | Apple | Stitcher | Spotify   Key Takeaways   Handshake deals and verbal agreements are a hard no. There are numerous public receipts that attest to this fact. There is just too much room for miscommunication and misunderstanding. Don’t do it!   Understand manager’s commission Commission percentage (10-20%) Commissionable income Post-term commission (sunset clause)   It’s important to stay in sync with your manager and the creative process.    Show Notes     [0:38] – Casey opens the episode by saying, welcome back!   [3:45] – Casey introduces the Chance the Rapper dispute.   [4:25] – A brief background of the dispute:   Chance the Rapper and his former manager are feuding in a high-profile dispute over the manager’s April 2020 firing in the wake of the Chicago hip-hop star’s disappointing album and concert ticket sales. In a lawsuit filed in Illinois on Nov. 30, 2020, Pat Corcoran, the former manager, is suing the rapper for a breach of contract, alleging he is owed millions in management commissions and unreimbursed expenses. In a statement, the legal team for Chance the Rapper, whose real name is Chancelor Bennett, said that “Mr. Corcoran has been paid all of the commissions to which he is legally entitled” and that “most of the complaint consists of self-serving and fabricated allegations.”  The dispute is a surprise for many in the music business because of how closely Mr. Bennett and Mr. Corcoran have worked over the past decade to build the 27-year-old rapper’s reputation as one of the most famous and successful independent artists.   Related Article: https://www.wsj.com/articles/chance-the-rapper-sued-by-former-manager-11607127219   [7:06] – Some specifics of this case:   One of the central claims of Corcoran’s lawsuit is this one: “In or around June 2013, Corcoran and Bennett entered into an oral agreement pursuant to which Bennett promised to pay Corcoran fifteen percent (15%) of the net profits on all revenues generated by CTR, Cool Pop Merch and CTR Touring in exchange for Corcoran’s management service.” Corcoran says that he is still owed for a number of unpaid commissions across Chance’s businesses that in total amount to more than $3 million.  Corcoran claims he should legally be paid a 15% net income post-term commission from Chance’s recorded music, merch, and touring for three years after the point the manager’s contract was terminated (on April 27, 2020). Pat Corcoran also claims that Chance the Rapper fired him and replaced him with his father Ken and brother Taylor Bennett due to “fan disappointment in Bennett’s most recent album [The Big Day] and underwhelming fan support for its associated tour.” Corcoran and Chance’s relationship apparently began to fissure when Chance, in February 2019, announced a July release date for his debut album. Corcoran expressed serious concern with the projected release date Bennett had unilaterally announced for the album. Corcoran knew that in view of the commitments Bennett had in early 2019—including his own wedding—it was likely there was not enough time for the creative process that was involved in releasing an album, and Corcoran advised Bennett in that regard. Corcoran opposed announcing the release of any album before the recording or writing process even began, let alone was substantially completed. Compounding the issue, Bennett’s recording efforts were compromised by unproductive and undisciplined studio sessions. Procrastination and lackadaisical effort, perpetuated by various hangers-on uninterested in the hard work of writing and recording, resulted in a freestyle-driven product of sub-par quality, a complete deviation from the meticulous writing process that brought Bennett fame for his wordplay and wit. Instead of acknowledging the numerous distractions and artistic compromises that inevitably resulted from the time wasted in the studio, all of which contributed to a lackluster album evidenced by historically low ticket sales, Bennett ultimately blamed Corcoran for the judgment rendered by his fan base rather than accept that his own lack of dedication had doomed the project. Corcoran says he recommended Chance “step away from the public and regroup” instead of performing on Ellen, Good Morning America, and The Late Show With Stephen Colbert. Corcoran claims that the TV appearances “only forced Bennett to publicly address his album’s shortcomings, rather than generate excitement about a newly-released album, which is what such appearances are calculated to do. These appearances served only to further exacerbate the failure of The Big Day.”  Related Article: https://pitchfork.com/news/chance-the-rapper-ex-manager-sues-for-millions-trashes-the-big-day/   [12:20] – Key Takeaways   Handshake deals and verbal agreements are a hard no.  Understand your manager’s commission It’s important to stay in sync with your manager and the creative process.    Resources: Check out my contract templates Join My Newsletter Email List Clubhouse: @contractcasey   Subscribe Website | Apple | Stitcher | Spotify

This week on Smart Sports Podcast we’re going to talk a little minor hockey. With the Ontario Minor Hockey Association playdowns in the semifinals now, I thought it would be great to feature one of our local teams making a run for a provincial title. Gary Lazou is the head coach of the Simcoe Kocir Automotive Warriors. The midget rep team hosts Game 1 of its best-of-six point OMHA midget B semifinal against the Petrolia Oilers on Thursday night at 6:30pm and will return for Game 3 on Sunday at 7:15pm at Talbot Gardens. This is a unique team as you will hear throughout this podcast. Not only does this team represent the future of what minor hockey will look like in the county, this team is also the symbol of an end of an era sort to speak. SHOUT OUTS The first shout out goes to Taylor Bennett. The Port Dover Skating Club member just captured a silver medal in dance at the Special Olympics Winter Games in Thunder Bay. Our second shout out goes to last week’s guest Jacob Erwin. Jacob played his final collegiate hockey game over the weekend. He and his Castleton University Spartans teammates lost 9-0 to the No. 1 ranked Norwich university Cadets in the New England Hockey Conference quarter-final. But that’s not all. Before the hockey season began, Jacob helped the Spartans men’s golf team to a fourth place finish at the North Atlantic Conference championships, while finishing second overall himself. He was named to the conference’s All-Acedemic team and First-Team All-NAC. SHOUT OUTS The first shout out goes to our local special Olympians. It's been TEN years since Mr. Hudson’s last album, Straight No Chaser was released via Kanye West’s G.O.O.D. Music label. The British singer/songwriter/producer is known for his high profile work with the likes of Kanye West and JAY-Z, his unique sound and the vulnerability he imbues within his music, setting him apart from other artists. He finally makes his return with his new full-length LP WHEN THE MACHINE STOPS. The 11-track album features guest appearances by Vic Mensa and Taylor Bennett, plus additional contributions from Schae, Josh Dean, Petite Noir and Good Grace. I had the chance to speak with Mr. Hudson in this interview about the release of his new album and recent projects he has been working on. https://www.mrhudson.com https://itsezbreezy.com/

With the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots and WorldPride happening this month, we turn our attention to LGBTQIA+ people and their relationship to fashion. To begin, Valerie Steele, the director and chief curator of The Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology, discusses the role fashion has played for queer people throughout history. She references “A Queer History of Fashion: From the Closet to the Catwalk,” an exhibit she co-curated that was the first in-depth look at LGBTQIA+ contributions to fashion over the past 300 years.  To get an understanding of the issues young queer people are facing today – and fashion’s role in telling their stories – host Sachin Bhola speaks to a few leading voices in the community. The first is rapper Taylor Bennett, who came out as bisexual in 2017. Next, Pierre Davis and Arin Hayes, the founders of streetwear brand No Sesso, weigh in on fashion’s commodification of sexual identity, particularly around Pride. To get the perspectives of people who don’t work in fashion, Bhola solicits the opinions of Jackie O and Mercy Kelly from The Hetrick-Martin Institute.  One brand that has long been invested in supporting the LBGTQIA+ community is Gap, and its 2019 Pride campaign features author and activist Jodie Patterson. She talks about her chosen family and what she’s learned raising her transgendered son.  We then take a global perspective on the LGBTQIA+ identity and talk to Ian Daniel, co-host and co-producer of Gaycation, who gives us a snapshot of queer people’s experience around the world and their relationship to fashion.  This episode of Fashioning Identity examines the hardships and the triumphs of LBGTQIA+ people, thinks critically about the role fashion plays in their lives, and more. Rich Jones is a prolific Chicago artist, community figure, and veteran of the cultural scene. Known for his versatile and evolving style, his new album, The Shoulder You Lean On, firmly plants the hip-hop rooted artist as a powerful songwriter and singer. Jones began in Chicago as part of the group Second City Citizens where he explored his talents as an MC. Through various collaborations with people like Supa Bwe, Taylor Bennett, and The O’My’s, Jones gained praise around the city, eventually being voted second best rapper in the city by the Chicago Reader in 2016, right behind Chance The Rapper. Jones shifted from straight rapping into a more melodic style, culminating in his lush, poppy 2016 release VEGAS. That EP, and several loose singles, prompted appearances in NPR, Chicago Tribune, FOX 32’s Good Day Chicago, and Consequence of Sound. Partnering music and brands with MAC Presents… Photo credit: Derek Garlington Marcie Allen, President of MAC Presents (music experiential agency , bridging the gap between corporations and the music industry), and musician, entrepreneur and philanthropist Taylor Bennett, join Pavan Bahl, Rob Sanchez, and Marc Raco for the most applause-laden interview in the show’s history on location at Subculture in New York City. This live audience episode is powered by Peerspace and features music by Casey McQuillen.Representing the deal, a seat at the adult table, and a market for authentic stories Photo credit: Derek Garlington Allen reviews her “Southern belle debutante sorority girl” roots, being raised by two grandmothers, attending sixteen schools before fifth grade, then how she started her first company at 25, being a storyteller and solid salesperson, having knowledge on both sides of the music industry, being in music industry representing the deal, and how bad deals aren’t authentic or tell a story. The importance of paying it forward, measuring ROI in music/brand sponsorships, and how fashion brands are being introduced to entertainment marketing and mass consumer marketing. Allen’s creative things used in repertoire to bring allegiance, consideration of the music industry’s album sales being down, how 10 years ago no one wanted to do a sponsorship in music, and now music artists have a seat at the “adult table”. How a deal with Billy Joel and Citi was of value even though he didn’t need the marketing, how a deal like that can move the needle in a variety of ways for an artist, tracking metrics and how brands can measure success, lifting sales and getting press, how Imagine Dragons’ deal with Southwest Airlines produced a billion press impressions, and whether musical artists are celebrity influencers. How much of sponsorship with musical artists is the cool factor, how music is one of the most powerful ways to connect with consumers, and the Urban Outfitters partnership with Taylor Bennett for Pride Month happened because he came out as bisexual, and how that was so authentic. Consumers can smell through non-authentic sponsorships, the return of cassettes, and what’s fascinating about artists. Gen Z, understanding the win, and measuring ROI Photo credit: Derek Garlington Deals with enterprise/blue chip companies, Khalid and Forever 21, Chance the Rapper with H & M, plus Taylor Bennett and Urban Outfitters, and how it’s about teamwork and women in the music industry. How artists have a groundswell of support from Gen Z, how brands don’t understand them, and they love fashion, and how brands are missing it. The absence of a major luxury brands who has done a deal with a developing artist, how fashion and music partnerships have exploded in the last year, and fashion brands are a way to reach a mass audience and global audience, so it isn’t as much about money. Sponsorship investments with large acts are at a fraction of the cost that other kinds of brands would pay because of the coolness factor and the reach of fashion brands for artists. Brands have to share what a win is – it is crucial. And, the need to focus more on the heartland of America. The story means everything, looking at what is the story that can be built around the artists and what brand will make sense is MAC Presents goes after. Knowing what are the important concerns, how brands are so focused on the latest technology, but ultimately it is about sitting down on both sides and finding out what is important to both sides. And, one has to be able to measure ROI.Urban Outfitters, owning both sides of the business, and a surprise live performance Photo credit: Derek Garlington Taylor Bennett joins the interview, discussing how the partnership with Urban Outfitters fits into the vision of his career. The importance of being your authentic self, on coming out bisexual on Twitter, how the brand is a lifestyle and culture, a message of anti-bullying, needing a creative space to be yourself, how the brand has supporter urban artists. The natural, organic story, partnering with Bennett as a face for Pride month, how Bennett is controlling his own business and the revenue from streamed music, controlling the creative and business sides, and how he and his business partners hold meetings after changing into suits in the bathroom. Off the Grid Questions cover a grandmother’s ceramic frog smoking a pipe, real world skills, a college counselor going in a different direction, a surprise performance of an early rap, a regretted missed opportunity, Cara Lewis, chasing dreams, messages to the community, women empowerment, being a professor, grabbing your future for yourself and getting it done, and an impromptu live final thought rap performance by Bennett.References: CLG Cara Lewis Sigrid Walk the Moon The post Marcie Allen of MAC Presents and Taylor Bennett – The Story of Music and Brands appeared first on Content Is Your Business.

ABOUT T. L. Following the success of the smash hit “Gettin Mo Money Than You” (including a video which continues to garner over half-a-million views on YouTube) from his debut LP The T. L. Williams Experience, T. The view from the top of business. Presented by Evan Davis, The Bottom Line cuts through confusion, statistics and spin to present a clearer view of the business world, through discussion with people running leading and emerging companies. The programme is broadcast first on BBC Radio 4 and later on BBC World Service Radio, BBC World News TV and BBC News Channel TV. Evan and three top executives discuss the curiosities of selling their expertise, knowledge the customer doesn't have. If consumers are in a state of relative ignorance, how can they shop around? What stops them getting ripped off? They also swap thoughts on religion in the workplace. Joining Evan are Heather McGregor, managing director of headhunters Taylor Bennett; Rupert Soames, chief executive of mobile energy company Aggreko; Gavin Oldham, chief executive of retail stockbroker The Share Centre. Producer: Ben Crighton Editor: Stephen Chilcott.

Musician, rapper, entrepreneur, and all around positive guy Taylor Bennett brings his "be yourself" mentality to the Going There with Dr. Mike podcast. The Chicago native discusses how "uplifting individuality" is his guiding philosophy in his mental health and well-being journey. Bennett explains that in order to discover our best self, we must be able to focus on how we as individuals can constantly grow and develop. That allows us to figure out what we want in the world and how to attain optimal mental, physical, and social health. The Be Yourself entrepreneur talks about how he copes with the challenges of pursuing a state of uplifting individuality. That includes exploring his feelings through his music and having his own independent label so he can pursue his authentic creative vision, eating healthy and exercising, and learning when he should stay focused and when to disconnect in order to understand how to cope with a difficult emotional situation. The key is to realize that the trial and error that we often have to go through is not a sign that we are failing, but rather a sign that we are learning and growing. Listen now, and like, review, and subscribe to Going There with Dr. Mike wherever you get your podcasts.Season 3 of Going There is brought to you by the fine folks at The Janssen Pharmaceutical Companies of Johnson & Johnson, who never stop working to create a future where disease is a thing of the past.Going There is presented in partnership with Sound Mind Live.
