Andrew Lewin interviews Aaliyah Banship and Luca Hoffecker, founders of FINstitute, a student organization at James Cook University in Australia. Aaliyah and Luca, both master's students in marine science and conservation, share their inspiration for creating FINstitute and how it supports students and marine conservation efforts. Tune in to learn about their journey from North America to Australia, and their mission to unite students in marine science and conservation through their local club. Connect with Aliah and Luca: https://www.instagram.com/the.finstitute/ FINstitute, founded by Aaliyah and Luca at James Cook University in Australia, is a student organization dedicated to supporting marine science and conservation projects. The organization was born out of a shared passion for marine conservation and a desire to make a positive impact on the marine environment. Aaliyah and Luca recognized the need for student involvement in conservation efforts and saw an opportunity to create a platform where students could contribute to meaningful projects. The main goal of FINstitute is to provide students with opportunities to engage in hands-on conservation work, network with professionals in the field, and gain valuable experience in marine science. The organization aims to bridge the gap between academic learning and real-world conservation efforts by offering workshops, events, and research opportunities for its members. One of the key initiatives of FINstitute is to collaborate with conservation organizations like Project Hue, which focuses on shark conservation in Indonesia. By partnering with Project Hue, FINstitute members have the opportunity to support shark tagging projects, fundraising efforts, and other conservation activities. This collaboration not only benefits the conservation projects but also provides students with practical experience and a chance to make a tangible impact on marine ecosystems. Additionally, FINstitute organizes events and activities to raise awareness about marine conservation issues and engage the broader community in conservation efforts. By hosting events like the "From Me to Hue" fundraiser and the shark tagging trip to Orpheus Island, FINstitute creates opportunities for students to actively participate in conservation projects and contribute to the protection of marine species. Overall, FINstitute serves as a platform for students at James Cook University to come together, learn, and take action in support of marine science and conservation. Through their dedication and passion, Aaliyah and Luca have created a vibrant and impactful organization that is making a difference in the field of marine conservation. The FINstitute, a student organization founded by Aaliyah and Luca, organizes a variety of events, fundraisers, and workshops to engage students and provide hands-on skills and experiences. These initiatives aim to not only bring students together but also support marine science and conservation projects both locally and internationally. One of the key aspects of the FINstitute's activities is the bi-weekly meetings where they host speakers and workshops. These meetings offer students the opportunity to learn new skills, such as underwater photography editing or age determination techniques, which they can then apply in their academic and professional pursuits. By providing these hands-on experiences, the FINstitute ensures that students gain practical skills that can enhance their resumes and future career prospects. In addition to the regular meetings, the FINstitute also organizes larger events like fundraisers and networking opportunities. For example, they hosted a cocktail party fundraiser called "From Me to Hugh" to raise funds for shark conservation projects. This event not only raised awareness about marine conservation but also provided a platform for students to actively contribute to a meaningful cause. Furthermore, the Finstitute's collaboration with organizations like Sharks and Rays of Australia (SARA) demonstrates their commitment to creating research opportunities for students. By partnering with SARA, the FINstitute aims to engage students in real-world research projects and foster a culture of scientific inquiry and collaboration within the student community. Overall, the Finstitute's focus on organizing events, fundraisers, and workshops showcases their dedication to providing students with valuable experiences and skills in the field of marine science and conservation. Through these initiatives, the FINstitute not only educates and engages students but also empowers them to make a positive impact on marine ecosystems and wildlife conservation efforts. Finstitute's partnership with Project Hue in Indonesia exemplifies the club's unwavering commitment to supporting marine conservation efforts. The collaboration aimed to raise funds for shark conservation, specifically focusing on the protection of sharks in Indonesian waters. Aaliyah and Luca, the founders of FINstitute, recognized the urgent need to address the threats facing shark populations, particularly in regions like Indonesia, known for its significant shark fishing market. The initiative to raise funds for Project Hue showcased Finstitute's dedication to making a tangible impact on marine conservation. By organizing a successful fundraiser, the club demonstrated its ability to mobilize resources and engage both students and the public in supporting conservation projects. The event not only raised awareness about the importance of shark conservation but also provided a platform for individuals to contribute to the cause. Through their partnership with Project Hue, FINstitute not only raised funds for shark conservation but also fostered a sense of collaboration and shared responsibility for protecting marine species. By actively engaging in fundraising activities and promoting conservation efforts, the club showcased its commitment to making a positive difference in the field of marine science and conservation. This partnership highlights the club's proactive approach to addressing pressing environmental issues and working towards a sustainable future for marine ecosystems.

There's no question about it: singer-songwriter Aliah Sheffield has always loved music. For her, it isn't just a “thing” she does, it's a way of life. It's in her blood; her heart; her soul. Born in Newark, New Jersey and raised in Savannah, Georgia, Aliah has always been a singer. Her musical influences cover a wide range—Deniece Williams, Donny Hathaway, Aretha Franklin and Patti LaBelle, to name a few. She played a number of instruments in grade school, including clarinet and saxophone. In high school, she was encouraged to explore the piano as she discovered her songwriting abilities. While studying film scoring at Berklee College of Music she began to experiment with fusing genres, particularly soul and R&B, to create her unique keyboard driven style. Yes, her music is heartfelt; her vulnerability definitely shows. But at the same time, her songs are also inspiring and empowering. Today, Aliah is fulfilling her dream of performing and sharing her music, capturing audiences in settings from intimate to grand. Working with industry veterans as well as other rising stars, she is currently writing and recording songs for her debut album. Aliah Sheffield is ready to take the world by storm, so have your best umbrella ready! Happy Valentine's Day! Our focus today is about what real love and acceptance of one's self means in pursuit of becoming more like the Savior Jesus Christ. In today's world, self-love is often synonymous with self-absorbedness. We are told to love ourselves, but we are not really given the right tools to do so. There is a lot of self-indulgence, running away from our problems, spending money on unnecessary things. So how do we focus on loving ourselves by adding the things that bring real value into our lives?   "If you're tired, go to bed. If you're hungry, eat. If you need a break, rest. Don't give up."   Aliah Hall is a licensed clinical social worker who works with individuals and couples find healing through compassion, empathy, and connection. Her clinical experience is part of why we invited her, as well as her passion for the gospel. Kathryn and Aliah discuss what it means to really love yourself and how approaching this topic with the lens that we are all divine children of God will help us cut through what the world is saying, and really focus on eternal truths.    Top Takeaways from this episode: We have always been divine. Loving ourselves and finding our true selves is how we become more like the Savior. You take care about the things that you love, so taking care of yourself shows you love yourself. Anything worth having takes discipline, including a love of yourself and a knowledge of your divinity. You cannot win a battle outside of yourself if there is an internal battle you are losing within.   Small and Simple Challenge: Talk to yourself like you would talk to someone you love. That's it!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Jim Domen shares the following bio of his life: "I never imagined that I would enter the homosexual lifestyle after being raised in a God-fearing home and accepting Christ at age seven. After I graduated from George Fox University, I was so desperate to love and be loved that I didn't care that my partner was HIV positive. God changed my life forever on June 8, 2002, when I lost all my worldly possessions and distinctly heard God's voice telling me to come back to Him. I told God, “I'm yours again,” and I began to realize that His strength is made perfect in my weakness – even in someone as broken as me. God began to restore me and I enrolled in seminary at Azusa Pacific University. I learned how to be obedient to God's voice and how to interpret the Bible. God continued His work of redemption and gave me opportunities to share my story publicly. After I graduated from seminary, I became a pastor at Rose Drive Friends Church. I realized that I could no longer ignore the troublesome news stories about public policy and it discouraged me to hear Christians who did not understand how to articulate their worldview. Around this time, Proposition 8 was being fought in the culture and I found myself on the front lines promoting God's plan for marriage: the union between a man and woman. At press conferences and rallies, I met the founder of Focus on the Family's California Family Council, who became my boss and mentor after I was asked to join California Family Council. After six years at CFC, God strategically called me to begin Church United in 2016. Church United's vision is to transform California for Christ by 1) Disrupting Pastors, 2) Uniting the Church, and 3) Transforming our Communities. Six years after leaving the gay lifestyle and one month before the successful passage of Proposition 8, God continued His work of restoration when I met my wife, Amanda. She is “God's gift from Heaven.” We were married in 2009 and five years later God blessed us with our daughter, Aliah, whose name in Hebrew means “ascending to God” – just like our praises to Him for giving us the gift of becoming parents. Two years later, Amanda gave birth to our son, Ryker, whose name means 'strong leader,' and in 2018, we had our third child, Asher. Her name means 'Happy and blessed.'” Episode Talking Points: Growing up in a Christian household The day he realized he was attracted to men Life with his gay partner in California Meeting his wife Amanda and having three kids Redemption Resources Jim Domen's Website Church United Not a Mistake Book --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/the-monday-christian/support

Racial healing is a process that can benefit all people because, regardless of background, we are all living in and affected by the same racialized world. In this episode, Racial Healing Champion, Rev. Dr. Aliah K. MaJon holds a safe space for me to ask, what I've dubbed, “Ignorant White Woman” questions. She is a compassionate educator with a resume that includes being the Chief Inclusion Officer (CIO) for The Shift Network and the founder of the Next 50 Years Project where she periodically teaches Cultural Intelligence and Social-Emotional Learning to Educators. Much of her work is informed by firsthand experience growing up in the inner city of Detroit and losing her only child to suicide. We have an honest talk about racism and how we can be hopeful that it can be healed through conscious action. Show Notes 01:59 Introduction to soulful racial healing both internally and externally 05:38 The George Floyd murder prompted a lot of external action, but what about internal soul searching? 12:12 Living in a bubble?
