After 40 years in print journalism, Vince Vawter didn't quite feel finished with writing. In 2013, he published his debut novel, Paperboy — a story about an 11-year-old boy named Victor Vollmer living in Memphis in 1959 who struggles to talk without stuttering. Blending fiction and memoir, the book draws heavily from Vince's own childhood and the challenges he faced finding his voice.Paperboy earned a prestigious Newberry Honor in 2014 and has now been published in 22 different languages. Years later, Vince began to imagine the story on stage, and at a friend's suggestion, it evolved into a musical. In 2023, the Manhattan School of Music performed it in New York, and later this year it will debut professionally at the Weathervane Theatre in Whitefield, New Hampshire.Following the success of Paperboy, readers wanted more of Victor's story. Vince obliged, and in 2018 he released Copyboy, which follows Victor at 17, and in 2023 he completed the trilogy with Manboy, where Victor is 21 and still navigating life with a stutter as he becomes a young adult in the tumultuous late 1960s in the U.S.I've known Vince for over two decades — his son and my brother my brother were college roommates and close friends. As I began carving out my own path in journalism, I remember early conversations with him, including our shared connection to the Evansville Courier & Press, though I'm not sure if our time there overlapped when I was working there in high school.More recently, we reconnected on Substack and have interacted regularly. Now nearing 80, Vince remains as sharp as ever. In February, he released his latest book, The Stuttering Stoic: How an Ancient Philosophy Helped Me Find My Voice. He joins me on the podcast this week to reflect on his long, accomplished journalism career and what he now calls his “second career” as an author. He also shares about living with a stutter and how writing — along with his study of Stoicism — has helped him find his voice.Paperboy was originally published by Penguin Random House, one of the industry's “Big Five” publishers. But along the way, Vince faced pressure to change elements of his story. Wanting to remain true to his voice and experience, he ultimately chose to self-publish rather than compromise, and in this conversation he talks about how he ultimately settled on that decision. You can learn more about Vince and buy his books at vincevawter.com.I'd also love to connect with you on Substack, where I write essays and share updates about future episodes. You can find that at The Road Ahead. You can also find me on Instagram and Twitter @ColeClaybourn, and on Facebook under Cole Douglas Claybourn. All episodes are now available in full on Substack and YouTube. This episodes's topic was an interesting one. While open to interpretation, the general idea is simply tracks that are... well, interesting, whatever that means. Maybe it means music for a more open-minded ear or maybe it just means pieces that do something cool or unusual and that stand out in a weird way. "Paper Route" from Paperboy 2 lays down some distinctly Seinfeld-esque

In 1985, Atari released Paperboy, an arcade game that looked simple at a glance but demanded something entirely different once players grabbed the handlebars. In this episode, we explore how Paperboy nearly disappeared during early testing, struggling with tone, readability, and player connection before being torn apart and rebuilt from the ground up. We trace how designers Dave Ralston and John Salwitz reshaped its world by watching real players, grounding its chaos in familiar suburban spaces, and redesigning everything from scoring systems to camera angles. Our conversation also dives into the physical reality of the cabinet itself, where broken welds, failed tests, and redesigned controls shaped the final experience. Join us as we steer, adapt, and survive the long road that made Paperboy an arcade classic on today's trip down Memory Card Lane.Read transcript

PAPERBOY: The STRANGE Abduction of Johnny GoschBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/missing-persons-mysteries--5624803/support.
On September fifth, nineteen eighty two, twelve year old Johnny Gosch walked out of his West Des Moines home before dawn to deliver newspapers and vanished without a trace. His case changed America forever, leading to the first missing child on a milk carton and landmark legislation that transformed how we handle abducted children. But the story most people know barely scratches the surface of what really happened. In this episode of The Redacted Report, we dig into the buried facts, the covered-up connections, and the questions that powerful people have spent four decades trying to silence. We begin with Police Chief Orval Cooney, the man tasked with finding Johnny. What most people don't know is that Cooney had a violent past, including a nineteen fifty one assault conviction. Just months before Johnny disappeared, eighteen of his own officers went on record accusing him of brutality, harassment, and drinking on duty. When volunteers searched for Johnny, witnesses say Cooney climbed onto a picnic table and told everyone to go home, calling the missing boy a damn runaway. He stonewalled the family at every turn until his sudden death in two thousand three, just as a lawsuit was about to expose what he knew. Then there's the newspaper itself. Johnny delivered papers for the Des Moines Register, the same company that employed Frank Sykora, who admitted to molesting at least seven paperboys, and Wilbur Millhouse, a former circulation manager found with a list of twenty two hundred boys' names when he was arrested. Millhouse reportedly told people for years that he knew who took Johnny and why. We examine the chilling prediction made two months before thirteen year old Eugene Martin vanished in nineteen eighty four. According to Noreen Gosch, a private investigator warned her another paperboy would be taken the second weekend of August on the south side of Des Moines. She passed this information to authorities. They did nothing. Eugene disappeared exactly when and where predicted. The episode explores the proof of life that emerged after Johnny's abduction. A confirmed sighting in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where investigators said a boy crying for help was positively identified as Johnny. A dollar bill with his authenticated signature surfacing in Sioux City three years later. Signs that Johnny was alive, somewhere, trying to send a message. We dive deep into the Franklin Credit Union scandal and the testimony of Paul Bonacci, who claimed he was forced to participate in Johnny's kidnapping. Bonacci knew physical details about Johnny that weren't public knowledge. A federal judge ruled his testimony truthful and awarded him one million dollars in a civil judgment. Yet police never interviewed him about the Gosch case.he investigation into Franklin led to tragedy. State investigator Gary Caradori was collecting evidence, interviewing witnesses, building a case against powerful people. On July eleventh, nineteen ninety, his plane came apart in midair over an Illinois cornfield. He and his eight year old son were killed. His briefcase of newly obtained evidence was never recovered. A documentary about the scandal called Conspiracy of Silence was pulled from the Discovery Channel before it could air. We trace the trafficking network run by John David Norman, a career predator whose operations spanned decades. His thirty thousand customer index cards were sent to the State Department and destroyed. His associate Phillip Paske worked for John Wayne Gacy. Investigators following witness testimony found an abandoned Colorado ranch with a hidden underground chamber and children's initials carved into the walls. The episode covers Noreen Gosch's claim that Johnny visited her in nineteen ninety seven, fifteen years after his disappearance, and the mysterious envelope of photographs left on her doorstep in two thousand six showing bound and gagged children, one of whom she believes is her son. Johnny Gosch would be fifty five years old today. No arrests have ever been made. No body has ever been found. The West Des Moines Police Department still refuses to release their complete case file. Someone knows what happened that September morning. Someone drove the blue Ford Fairmont. Someone flicked that dome light three times. And someone has kept this secret for over four decades. This is the story they buried. This is The Redacted Report.
On September 5, 1982, 12-year-old paperboy Johnny Gosch left his West Des Moines home before dawn to deliver the Des Moines Register—and never returned. His red wagon was found two blocks away, still loaded with undelivered papers. Witnesses reported Johnny speaking with a stocky man near a blue two-toned car, and another man seen trailing him moments later. Within minutes, Johnny vanished. In this episode, we dig into one of America's most chilling missing-child cases—and the fallout that changed the country. We reconstruct Johnny's last morning, then unravel an investigation marked by early missteps and delays that fueled Noreen Gosch's relentless campaign for reform. Her advocacy helped end mandatory waiting periods for missing-child cases through the Johnny Gosch Bill and contributed to the broader national push that led to the creation of the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children. We also examine the haunting pattern of other Des Moines-area disappearances, including paperboy Eugene Martin in 1984 and Marc Allen in 1986—cases still unsolved and often viewed through the same lens of fear and possibility. The story takes darker, more controversial turns: the testimony of trafficking survivor Paul Bonacci, who said he was forced to participate in Johnny's abduction and later won a civil judgment after a federal judge found his account credible; Noreen's claim that an adult Johnny visited her in March 1997; and the disputed photographs left at her home in 2006. We lay out what's alleged, what's documented, and why the case remains so fiercely debated. Finally, we cover Noreen Gosch's updated allegations naming John David Norman and Phillip Paske as potential perpetrators—claims that remain unproven but continue to shape public theories about the case. As of 2025, Johnny Gosch has been missing for more than 43 years. No arrests. No confirmed sightings. Just a family still searching and a case that refuses to die.
Ray Christian hated being a paperboy. Bad pay, hard route, rude customers. The proposal to tax the ultra-rich that could address some of France's budget woes. The last paperboy in Paris, who has been hawking newspapers for nearly 50 years, tells of challenges and successes from Pakistan to Paris. And the man who ended the death penalty in France enters the Panthéon. As French politicians remain deeply divided over how to address the country's growing deficit, one measure appears to unite public opinion across the political spectrum: the Zucman tax. Devised by 38-year-old economist Gabriel Zucman, the idea is to add a two percent tax on the ultra-rich, who often use holding companies to shield their wealth from income taxes. While the left sees it as fiscal justice, many on the right are concerned about additional taxes in a country that already has a lot, and maintain taxing the wealthiest will drive them abroad. (Listen @2') Ali Akbar left his native Pakistan aged 18, looking to make enough money to buy his mother a decent home. Since arriving in France in 1973, he's managed to do just that – selling newspapers like Le Monde on the streets of Paris's Left Bank district. A popular figure in the neighbourhood, Akbar – the capital's last remaining hawker – was recently selected for the National Order of Merit by President Emmanuel Macron, a former customer. He talks about loving his work, the collapse of the newspaper culture and how recognition by France will help to "heal" the injuries of his past. (Listen @18'30'') France abolished the death penalty on 9 October 1981. Forty-four years later, the justice minister who fought to change the law, Robert Badinter, is entering the Pantheon, the monument dedicated to French heroes. The Oakland A's of the 70's were at their absolute best when it came to October baseball. They beat the Big Red Machine to win the 1972 World Series. They beat the Miracle Mets in '73 to win it again. And in 1974, they made it back-to-back-to-back when they disposed of the Dodgers in 5 games. Flooded with names like Catfish & Reggie, Blue Moon & Vida, Campy and Geno, they had talent and swagger and were the team to beat heading into the 1975 postseason. Playing centerfield for those World Series winning teams in '73 & '74 was speedster Billy North. Acquired by Charlie Finley from the Cubs prior to the 1973 season, North immediately fit in with the defending champs and his style of play was exactly what manager Dick Williams loved… speed and defense. North would lead the AL in stolen bases in 1974 and 1976 when he stole a career high 75 bags while playing a sterling centerfield. After missing the entire postseason in '73 when the Athletics repeated as Champs by beating Tom Seaver and the Mets in 7 games, North was looking forward to the '74 season and a chance to play in the playoffs. But on June 5th in Detroit, he and Reggie Jackson had an altercation that ended up with both of them injured as well as catcher Ray Fosse. It wasn't the first time the Swinging A's brawled with each other and it had very little effect on the team's play. Three months later they were back in the World Series for the 3rd straight year, with Fosse, Jackson and North all in the starting lineup. Despite having won the last two World Series titles, the A's were underdogs against the Dodgers who won 102 games in the National League and they didn't give the A's much respect going into their matchup. On the POP podcast, North tells us how he was called the “Paperboy” because he read all the newspapers and he told his teammates on the flight back from Baltimore after winning the ALCS that a Dodger player was quoted as saying that there were only two players on the A's that could play for the Dodgers… the champs didn't need more than that… 5 games later… they were champs again for the 3rd straight year. North tells us how he and Reggie put that incident behind them and remain friends to this day… and how that team 50 years later still gathers together. He talks of how Dusty Baker influenced his life and remains one of his best friends and how Dusty honored him at an All-Star game a couple of years ago… and he talks about the NorthLegacyProject.com that he helped start in honor of his mom to help kids with special needs. For a man who made a living stealing bags in his 20's, he now lives to give back in his 70's. A 2-time champion of the only team in baseball history other than the Yankees to win 3 straight World Series Championships. On this week's episode Phillip is joined once again by Antonio Palacios from The Cultworthy Podcast and Back 2 the Balcony Podcast. Phillip starts the show by giving the general information about the movie with some facts thrown in by him and Antonio. It's then time for Listener' Opinions from Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. Then Phillip and Antonio discuss The Son of Monte Cristo, a sword and cape movie from 1940. It's a great conversation. They then answer the question of whether they see anything in this movie that Tarantino might have liked or used in a film. Phillip and Antonio then individually rate the movie. They then answer the question of whether they would buy this movie, rent it, or find it for free. It's then time for Phil's Film Favorite of the Week; Brazil (1985). Antonio then recommends The Paperboy (1994) and The Godsend (1980). There's something magical about a determined paperboy chasing John Cusack down, saying "I want my two dollars!" That's the power of an unforgettable movie moment - it sticks with you for decades. In this episode, I dive into why Johnny the Paperboy from 1985's "Better Off Dead" created one of cinema's most quotable running gags despite being just a minor character in the film. But that's just the beginning of our musical journey. I share my recent rockstar encounter with Cheap Trick's legendary guitarist Rick Nielsen, who took time to reminisce over an old band photo I brought him to sign. There's nothing quite like watching a music legend examine his younger self and tell stories about the shoes he wore in 1977! And yes, he flipped the bird in our photo together - a true rock and roll moment I'll never forget. The concert experiences continue as I recount seeing Cheap Trick open for Rod Stewart (who sounds incredible at 80!), connecting with podcast listeners at shows, and my adventure of turning lawn seats into something much better. We explore musical history with deep dives into Squeeze's 1985 comeback tour, Queen's landmark album "The Game" (their only US #1), and why The Cars' underappreciated "Panorama" album deserves another listen. Plus, Jimmy takes us back to 1955 to discover Big Maybel's original version of "Whole Lot of Shakin' Going On" before Jerry Lee Lewis made it famous.Throughout our musical exploration, we discover how certain songs become time machines, instantly transporting us back to specific moments with friends, first listens, and the emotions attached to them. From $2 newspaper deliveries to multimillion-dollar rock tours, this episode celebrates how music connects our past to our present. Give it a listen, then share your own musical memories with us - we'd love to hear which songs define your life's soundtrack!“Music In My Shoes" where music and memories intertwine.Learn Something New orRemember Something OldVisit our Facebook and Instagram pages and spread the word if you enjoy the podcast. Let us tell you about this super nice kid, Johnny! He is the NICEST, SWEETEST and most THOUGHTFUL kid we know! He always is there to lend us a helping hand! The one time, Mike and Serial came to visit J3RMZ and Johnny was there to help with his bags! We don't know where he came from still but.... Oh, and that one time Ash was doing her laundry and out of nowhere, Johnny showed up to help her fold her clothes! How sweet? I wonder if Ash ever found her glow in the dark Art the Clown panties that went missing that day... The Paperboy came out in 1994 and is it just us, or is there some form of renaissance when it comes to this movie? Many people have talked about this one and we may see why. Send us a textGrandpa tells about his very first job to earn money outside of the home. He was a paperboy for the San Francisco "News-Call Bulletin." The route skirted West Cliff Drive overlooking the beach in Santa Cruz, California. Though he didn't know why he enjoyed it, he liked to pause on the route to look at the girls on the beach. On this job he learned that if he stopped for a root beer float every day on the way home, his earnings decreased dramatically. He shares some of his exploits on this job.

Covering Guardian War right after Paperboy 64 is a one-two punch of some of the most hideous games we've played. But looking past its shoddy veneer, Guardian War is kind of interesting, if insufficient. Of all of the 3DO games we've played, this is the one that's most like an actual video game… being a kind of over-the-shoulder tactics RPG. Gary also underwent a harrowing medical experience, so we had to talk about that too.
Would you believe that the Paperboy game for the N64 would be one of the ugliest things we've covered for this show? It seems like that would be hard to accomplish, given the competition, but this game's spindly polygonal horrors are genuinely unnerving.

Timestamps: (5:58) - Tyler Goodrich Update (15:00) - Johnny Gosch On September 5, 1982, Johnny Gosch (12) left his home in the early morning to carry out his paper route. His father would usually go with him, but on that fateful day Johnny went alone. Witnesses reported seeing Johnny speaking to different men that morning. His red wagon, filled with newspapers, would be found abandoned by his father. There have been reported sightings of Johnny over the years. Johnny's mother Noreen has said that in 1997, Johnny showed up at her home to visit her. Johnny explained to Noreen what had happened during his abduction and said that he still feared for his life. Noreen said she hugged him at the end of their visit, and watched him leave. Could Johnny really be alive and living a life under the radar? Did he really visit his mother 15 years after he vanished?
