World-renowned saxophonist and Blue Note recording artist Walter Smith III is the model music educator and practitioner. This enormously talented saxophonist pursued music education as a profession as far back as high school. In this episode, Walter's storied career follows the path beginning with performing at McDonald's at age 7, to an exciting area of study at one of today's premier high schools, Kinder High School for the Performing and Visual Arts (HSPVA) in Houston, Texas to leadership roles at Berklee College of Music, reflecting on experiences at the Thelonious Monk Institute (today, the Herbie Hancock Institute) and exciting tours with legends like Wayne Shorter and Herbie Hancock. Gender equity in jazz, a priority for Walter, is spearheaded by the Berklee Jazz and Gender Justice Institute, and innovations in jazz education promoting inclusivity. Walter touches on his transition from Boston to New York, emphasizing the interplay between performance and teaching. Walter Smith III just released his eleventh album as a leader. Our conversation on Strictly Jazz Sounds also takes a deep dive into three of us are from Houston and Reuben is not. This project includes three of his closest music cohorts who are three of the most accomplished and influential musicians in jazz today: Jason Moran-piano, Reuben Rogers-bass, and Eric Harland-drums. The music does not disappoint in any way. We listen to clips of selected tracks, discuss the music and the significance, if any, of the composition titles. Walter is/has been a member of many legendary and highly accomplished groups (recording and/or touring) including the Roy Haynes Fountain of Youth Band (Walter was fired when he decided to go to Los Angeles, California), Terence Blanchard Quintet, Jason Moran's In My Mind: Monk at Town Hall, Ambrose Akinmusire Quintet, and the Christian McBride “Situation”, He's also teamed up with Eric Harland's “Voyager”, the Bill Stewart Trio, Marquis Hill's “New Gospel Revisited”, and the Sean Jones Quintet among others. Thank you for listening to Strictly Jazz Sounds. You have a choice among many other jazz podcasts, yet you selected this one today. You have my appreciation for your time and interest. On this week's episode of The Silence the Shame Podcast, our host, L.ife, sits down with 2x Grammy Nominated Song Writer and Vocal Producer, Kristofer “Dopamine Dreamz” Murray, and CEO of Love Yaself and Motivational Speaker, Marquis Hill to discuss the importance of finding and maintaining self-love. They both share personal testimonies of mental health challenges throughout life and how it has fueled their passion to create safe and vulnerable spaces for themselves and others. Both are entrepreneurs and have had to navigate the ebbs and flows of life to create their versions of success and they share their insights with the hope to show others that they are not alone. Some noteworthy “gems” from this episode: 1. While most people may think of it as weak, it takes strength to be vulnerable. 2. Life can have its challenges, but it's important to take one step forward each day. It's about progress over perfection. 3. If you are hurting, reach out to someone, anyone to talk about it. You are not alone, and someone is there to support. If you or you know someone experiencing a mental health crisis, please dial 9-8-8 to connect with the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline or text “SILENCE” to 707070. The Third Story Podcast with Leo Sidran

While almost everyone is sharing the most polished and curated versions of themselves, Braxton Cook is asking “Who Are You When No One Is Watching?” Actually, as it turns out, it's a question he's asking of himself, and in a somewhat postmodern and ironic twist, he's doing it quite publicly on his new record, called (surprise!) Who Are You When No One Is Watching? which comes out February 24 on Nettwerk Records. Braxton Cook is an artist of his time - that is, he's hard to define, hard to categorize, highly educated, determined to share his most authentic self and in a constant state of searching.  He's a Juilliard trained jazz saxophone player who has worked with jazz artists Christian Scott, Christian McBride Big Band, Jon Batiste and Marquis Hill as well as more mainstream artists like Solange Knowles and Tom Misch. He's also a deeply sensitive solo artist, singer, songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist who is committed to keeping the saxophone alive in soul music, speaking his own personal truth in his songs, and bridging the gap between jazz, soul, and alternative R&B. In other words, he's a millennial jazz artist. No wonder he opened his 2017 album Somewhere In Between with the song “Millenial Music”. We spoke recently about his trajectory, starting out on the local scene in Washington D.C. as a high school and college student (he spent two years at Georgetown University studying English with a concentration in African American Studies and playing gigs in town before transferring to Juilliard to pursue his jazz education), his evolution from soloist to singer, sideman to leader, and child to parent. We also talked about the value of nostalgia and deep emotional connection in his writing, intentionality in raising children, his determination to make “music with impact”, where he cut his teeth and if that has anything to do with his lifelong fascination with dentistry. www.third-story.com www.patreon.com/thirdstorypodcast www.wbgo.org/studios www.braxtoncook.com

J. Crew's Next Top Model! Jive Confessional! Colossal Abundance! Not only the best dressed person in the room, saxophonist Geof Bradfield sets a new standard of intellectual charisma. In this episode, we chat about diving into the scores of an unsung hero of jazz, the significance of symmetry in Geof's writing, and nightmare cocktail that consists of a milking truck, a European tour, and an inescapable glass shower.  FEATURED RELEASE: Geof Bradfield “Yes, and…Music for Nine Improvisers” (2018)  Getting to Know: Geof! Born in Houston, TX, saxophonist and composer Geof Bradfield has shared the stage throughout North America, Europe, Russia, Asia, Africa and the Middle East with jazz luminaries such as Randy Weston, Carl Allen, Brian Blade, Rodney Whitaker, Etienne Charles, Joe Locke, and Orrin Evans. He also performs and records regularly with fellow Chicago artists including Dana Hall, Clark Sommers, Jeff Parker, Matt Ulery, Marquis Hill, and Ryan Cohan, to name a few. His work is featured on 50+ CDs, including seven albums as a leader that have garnered critical accolades from the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Downbeat, the Chicago Tribune and NPR. Bradfield has been recognized in Downbeat Critics Polls as a Rising Star Tenor Saxophonist and Arranger. Birdhoused, recorded live at Chicago's legendary Green Mill jazz club and released on Vancouver label Cellar Live in 2017, garnered 4 ½ stars from Downbeat. His most recent project Yes, and…Music for Nine Improvisers (Delmark Records 2018) was commissioned by Chamber Music America's New Jazz Works program with the generous support of the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation and features a nonet of top-flight Chicago and New York artists. A committed educator, Bradfield is Associate Professor of Jazz Studies at Northern Illinois University and has given master classes and lectures at the Brubeck Institute, the Manhattan School of Music, the Jazz Education Network conference, and numerous other national and international venues.  Watch the full interview on our YouTube Channel here!

Braxton and I explored the complexities of achieving balance while realizing your wildest dreams. This word, "balance" has become a dirty word for those of us who are self-described super creatives. We often forget how important it is to maintain balance throughout our daily lives due to our insatiable apatite to breathe life into our art. Braxton outlines some of the challenges of creating sounds that reach backward whilst also looking forward, and always acknowledging the present. Today you will get a birds-eye view into the world of one the most prolific creatives of our generation. Connect with Braxton Here https://www.BraxtonCook.com (https://www.BraxtonCook.com)Bio:Braxton Cook is one of this generation's most exciting emerging voices in the jazz world. Not only does he exhibit world-class virtuosity on the alto saxophone but he is also a uniquely talented vocalist and songwriter whose sound blends Jazz, Soul, R&B, and Alternative rock into a fresh new sound he calls Jazz Future Soul. Braxton graduated from The Juilliard School in 2015.Braxton was named a semi-finalist in the 2013 TheloniousMonk International Jazz Saxophone Competition. Since then,Braxton has spent the past 5 years touring the world withGrammy Award-nominated trumpeter Christian Scott,Christian McBride and Marquis Hill among others. During histime as a student at The Juilliard School, Braxton released hisdebut EP Sketch (2014) and sophomore release Braxton CookMeets Brown (2015) launching his solo career and bringinghim festivals and venues across the country. In April of 2017,Braxton released his debut album Somewhere inBetween, which allowed Braxton to tour both nationally andinternationally to the U.K as well as Japan. In less than a year, Somewhere in Between as well asthe Somewhere in Between Remix album has amassed millionsof streams and downloads on Spotify and Apple Music and hasbeen praised by peers, musicians and critics alike. SaintHeron noted Cook's demonstration of “unmatched flexibility bymerging multiple genres into an ardent, passionate and soul-filled project.” In 2017, Fader Magazine called Braxton Cook a“Jazz Marvel” and “Jazz Prodigy.” The 2018 June Issue of EbonyMagazine listed Braxton as Top Five Jazz Artist To Watch(alongside Robert Glasper, Kamasi Washington, ButcherBrown, and Kris Bowers). Braxton has worked alongside Solange Knowles and even contracted the horn players involved in her live shows at theGuggenheim, Radio City Music Hall, Afro Punk Festival, Panorama Festival, and Made in America Festival. Most recently, Braxton was featured on Tom Misch's 2018 U.S. Domestic Tour which started with a 2 performances at Coachella and culminated with a very special Tiny Desk performance.Braxton is now working on his next project entitled “No Doubt” which is set to release Fall of 2018. He embarks on his first international headlining tour in the Fall of 2018 to support the project. Support this podcast

Did you suspect that a Tuba could sound so sweet? Let alone 6 of them?!? Thanks to Keith Coston in Detroit and his Podcast, Jazz Renaisance. He puts out great Sets, through which I’ve been introduced to a number of newer artists, including Marquis Hill and Phronesis who are included in this Set. There’s such a wealth of great talent and great music out there, that friendly guides with similar tastes help us to the artists that will speak to us most deeply. So thanks to this community of sharing people, spreading the love. Most importantly, Thanks to the Musicians! This is pure amateurism on my part – sharing incredible art because I love it. And I hope that this sharing benefits those who pour their entire lives into it, especially those lesser known music makers, like Cleveland Eaton and Howard Johnson, and the side-players, orchestras and choruses. In this world of the 1% and the 99%, the arts world is imbalanced like any other. A precious few musicians live in luxury and renown, while the great multitudes of others – sometimes as great as the revered – share their gifts in obscurity, or lack the opportunity of even that. I’m thinking more these days about how the Arts benefit me, and about how I support Art, or whether I even do that, in its many forms. Thrive! Kirby Obsidian ps - I seem to have become absent minded about what I've recently played. So yes, the Sarah Vaughan piece was played just two Sets ago.

Jazz trumpeter Marquis Hill is our special guest on this episode of The Other Side of the Bell. The New York Times described him as a “dauntingly skilled trumpeter,” and the Chicago Tribune asserts that “his music crystallizes the hard-hitting, hard-swinging spirit of Chicago jazz.” Hill hones a warm, mellifluous tone on trumpet and flugelhorn with which he unravels sleek melodic passages that are as commanding as they are cogent.  As a composer, he builds upon his distinctive sound to craft arresting originals that embrace post-bop, hip-hop, R&B and spoken word. After releasing four well-received discs on Skiptone Music – New Gospel (2011), Sound of the City (2012), The Poet (2013) and Modern Flows, vol. 1 (2014) – Hill raised his profile significantly by winning the 2014 Thelonious Trumpet Competition. A tour de force of the Chicago music scene, Hood Smoke has been making lasting impressions on listeners all over the world since the release of their debut album, 2012’s Laid Up In Ordinary. The Chicago Sun-Times calls the band a “must-see act.” WBEZ’s Vocalo touts them as “a kind of soul-pop fusion that is truly captivating.” With their second album, 2014’s Regular Neurotic, the band gained critical notoriety. American Songwriter Magazine featured the song, “Never Suffering,” written by band leader, bassist and composer Bryan Doherty. Rough Around The Hedges, the band’s third album, was released in March of 2016. String and brass trios, a small vocal choir, award-winning trumpeter Marquis Hill and Chicago legend Matt Ulery, help to make The Hedges their most anticipated release to date.

This episode is for you. Why? Well, you don't have to be an audiophile or avid listener to understand the universal language of the art form.  Music often sets the stage to experience the beautiful harmony of purpose and performance.  We invite you to open your hearts along with your ears to our engaging conversation with musician, Marquis Hill.  Marquis Hill is the 2014 winner of the illustrious, Thelonious Monk International Trumpet Competition. Showcasing his immense talent in front of jazz giants like Herbie Hancock, Quincy Jones, Roy Hargrove, and Randy Brecker, along with sharing the stage with President Bill Clinton and Pharell Williams, thrust Marquis onto the national stage and a recording contract with major label, Concord Records.   Though success can come fast and furious, Marquis is a grounded musician anchored by his deep Chicago roots and humbled by a village of mentors, educators, and friends that inspire him to create and live on purpose.   In this episode we learned about the big "why" that powers his actions and contributes to his success, the life changing experience of sharing the stage with Quincy Jones, Herbie Hancock, Pharell, and Bill Clinton, and how edu- cation and mentorship shaped his life and influences his work. Also learn about how his search to find his own voice and how mentorship has offered him much more than music and has made him who he is.
