Loosely modeled on Penelope, Odysseus, and Athena from Homer's Odyssey, WORRY compares Penelope's suitors to a throng of stubborn anxieties, which might be mitigated through artmaking rather than annihilation. Emphasizing Athena's association with protection, handicraft, and wisdom but not war, WORRY identifies Odysseus not as military hero but in terms of the joy of wandering and distraction. WORRY is a show at Soft Machine Gallery in Allentown, PA.WORRY artists include: Rocío Cabello, Matthew Crain, Eva Di Orio, Morgan Hobbs, William Hudders, Duwenavue Santé Johnson, Elizabeth Johnson, Frederick Wright Jones, Elizabeth Keithline, Tom McGlynn, Renny Molenaar, John Mortensen, Jill Odegaard, Joseph O'Neal, Bethann Parker, Celia Reisman, Paul Rider, Anthony Smith Jr., Emily Steinberg, Charles Stonewall, Bruce Wall, and Tenesh WebberWORRY will be having a closing reception on Saturday, July 1 at 2 pm for a brief Artists Talk and music by Francine Roussel (vocals) and Patrick Paladin (piano) who will present a repertoire of popular songs, in the original French, with a jazz approach.Soft Machine Gallery is a contemporary art space/performance venue in blossoming Allentown featuring local/national artists & performers. It is located at 105 Ridge Ave, Allentown, PA 18101. Artist statement: I don't like artist statements. I think that the creation of art is so autobiographical that the finalized art or product has either served its purpose through the creative process or finds its purpose through the viewer's exploration and interaction with it. The act of making is the language, the medium is the tool or vocabulary available, and the product is the final artist statement. Whether the viewer likes, understands, and or accepts that statement in the form provided or experienced is a different story. That's what the artist statement feels like to me. It's the artist/maker asking to be accepted and understood. It's a way of trying to add value to something priceless because art is communication. Also artist statements feel like the first lie I learned to tell in art school. (if you B.S you can get a BS you can get a BA. The second lie was that i only got into the school because I'm black). Since my art is autobiographical I'll tell you a bit about me. -I don't think there is a difference between art, craft, or kitsch (creating jewelry feels like an extension of what I put on canvas) -I love masks and jewelry from around the world. I think these objects are consistently interesting and tell you so much about how people like to be perceived and sometimes not perceived. (you will see many accessories and fashion influences in my work) -I was raised on anime and martial arts movies (I still call them kung fu movies) -I'm obsessed with framing, picture frames, movie shot frames, and just how content changes depending on context (many of my drawings play with framing inside of the picture plane) -I hate the idea of making art universal (It devalues personal experience and plays on the idea that people are too dumb to like or understand art without explanation or association to the global minority) -Also patterns…are amazing (crazy how endless they are) -shadows and how light disperses is also a thing for me if you catch me staring im taking mental pictures of (oh that's how something like that would move or drape) -words also inform my work. I am very influenced by words and the thoughts they carry that I actually write more ideas than I visually produce. Elaisha Hilliard is a fine artist located in Detroit, Michigan. Her favorite medium is paint. Paint is her most preferred medium. "You can communicate so much with it," she adds. "A brushstroke, a texture, as well as a color can tell you a lot about an artist's emotions." Elaisha began with acrylics because they were the cheapest and most accessible medium, but as she became more serious about her work, she transitioned to oil paints and is loving every minute of it. She has shown interest in pursuing additional mediums in the future. When asked what motivates her to create art, she replied, "I'm inspired by everything." Elaisha stated emphatically that she strives to be as unique as possible. She claims that in the past, she would frequently come across artwork by other painters and think to herself, "Wow, I wish I could paint like that," but then she goes on to say, "I wish I could paint like that." Ashley VanGemeren is a mixed media artist from Laurel, Maryland. She knew she wanted to be an artist from an early age, developing a love for portraiture and acrylic painting in high school. She followed her dream by attending the Corcoran School of the Arts and Design earning her BFA in Fine Art in 2015. During her time at the Corcoran, Ashley became passionate about working with collage and abstraction. She started layering acrylic paint with found objects and unconventional materials to create pieces that were complex, visceral, and deeply personal. It was during this time of exploration she realized art making could be therapeutic, serving as a means to heal and connect with others who have struggled with mental illness and eating disorders. Her practice has expanded to include collage and wearable art, utilizing color and gestural brushwork to render the essence and celestial nature of her subjects. Ashley is a nationally exhibited artist, represented by Unruly Collective in Brooklyn since 2017 and is a returning artist to the FlatFile collection at Transformer Gallery in DC. In addition to her studio practice, she has taught dozens of painting and drawing classes to children grades 6-12 and adults of all ages. Dominic Green is a multi-disciplinary artist and storyteller from Prince George’s County, Maryland, currently focused on film, photography, and playwriting. From a young age, Dominic has been fascinated with the duality of good and evil. This fascination was rooted in a religious upbringing, and stories of good and evil found in the biblical text. Through these stories, Dominic developed a curiosity around the backstories of their characters, and how a moment seemed to shape the rest of their lives. Dominic uses his lens and writing to explore this central tension and fundamental questions of fairness and bias rooted in perception. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/creative-habits/support

Christopher Clark, "I don’t want my art to just be seen, I want it to be experienced. My focus is to successfully convey a message or feeling through the images, colors, and brushstrokes in my work. I like to speak from my personal life experiences from my perspective as a young black male in America. My aim is to explore social issues, culture, and history of the black community in the diaspora and abroad. My style is more graphic than realistic. I believe this makes the work easier for younger audiences to digest and also so that the viewer is focusing more on the content rather than just what the piece looks like. Reflecting the human figure is very powerful to me, which is why I choose to tell my stories through portraiture and figurative works.  I want to create art that that the viewer connects with on a personal level. I want them to be able to see themselves, their friends, and their family in my work. By telling my story I want to help the viewer rediscover theirs."  --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/creative-habits/support

Female friendships, coming of age and the metamorphosis a girl makes into becoming a woman and her authentic self. The themes behind fragrance Gucci Bloom Acqua di Fiori inspired 15 young female creatives to design and write original works for Gucci's Instagram. Inside their drawings and images are texts that together tell a story which is sometimes personal, comical and intimate. In this episode, produced in partnership with Man Repeller and their podcast Monocycle, host Leandra Medine sits down with three artists from the project in an eccentric Brooklyn apartment to talk about their work. The artists convey their ideas in diverse ways. Emma Allegretti's character wants to be like everyone else so she concocts a Acqua Di Fiori potion. She transforms, only to realize her own self is unique and beautiful. Joy Miessi was inspired by her favorite park Hampstead Heath for her series of drawings and words that tell a story about herself and her friends spending time there. Amber Vittoria's illustrations represent the women around her and her own evolution as a creative.
