Kaitlin Sopoci-Belknap, National Director of Move to Amend, talks about a proposed 28th amendment to our Constitution - an amendment that basically says “Corporations are not people.” Kaitlin explains that though the infamous “Citizens United” Supreme Court decision of 2010 asserted First Amendment rights to corporations, this was not the beginning of corporate privilege in America. Our nation has a long history of treating corporations with all the privileges of human beings, but without the responsibilities. As a result, corporations have, for a long time, acted with virtual impunity in violating human rights in this nation. When faced with deciding between human rights and corporate privilege, the courts typically decide in favor of corporations. Citizens United is just the latest example. Move to Amend calls for a new amendment to the US Constitution that unequivocally states that inalienable rights belong to human beings only. It also states that money is not a form of protected free speech under the First Amendment, and therefore it must be regulated in political campaigns. The organization embraces a set of values that includes accountability and responsibility on both a personal and organizational level, a commitment to transparency, and a recognition of the importance of community. Additionally, they are strongly committed to the elimination of oppression in all forms; individuals, communities, workplaces, policies, and political representation. In addition to being the National Director of Move to Amend, Kaitlin Sopoci-Belknap is the President of the Board of Directors of Democracy Unlimited, and a Local Democracy Fellow for the Liberty Tree Foundation.  Kaitlin believes in a diversity of tactics to bring about systemic social change. She has served on numerous national and local boards, helped elect many progressive candidates to office, served as a local elected official herself for 12 years, bird-dogged candidates and politicians, citizen lobbied Congressmembers and state officials, and she has hosted a community radio station program. In the summer of 2019 she was arrested for taking part in a civil disobedience action to shut down Congress over climate collapse inaction. She and 16 other activists superglued their hands to the doors leading from Congressional office buildings to the US Capitol.

We all know corporations aren’t people, and corporate donations are NOT the same thing as free speech, though that’s the dangerous precedent set in this ruling. Chris Mitchell: Nothing like hitting the desk and getting right back to work. I'm excited about this interview. I've been wanting to do it for a while. Hibba Meraay: So today you talk about a really interesting topic and that is preemption. So I think the first important thing to say to our listeners is what is preemption and why is it important? Chris Mitchell: Hey listeners, tell us what preemption is. Sorry. I think this is really important. Preemption is basically where the states tell the cities … or where a higher unit of government tells a lower level of government that it cannot do certain things. We're going to talk about a report from the Local Solutions Support Center in which they talk all about this. They define it really well but just to give people a very brief sense leading into it, I wanted to note, there's 25 states that preempt local minimum wage laws in which a locality would want to set a higher minimum wage than the lowest one for the state or the federal government. 23 states ban local paid sick days, 44 states ban local regulation of ride sharing networks. We talk frequently about the 20 states that ban, or have barriers to, community networks. So there's all kinds of different preemption in some states. Some of this is growing, like four states that ban soda taxes and it's a rapidly growing movement as we'll talk about in the interview but the overall point is that states are telling local governments they cannot legislate or do anything in these issue areas. Hibba Meraay: Right. Like you said, the issue areas are really broad and a lot of them are hot topics that people are paying a lot of attention to, like minimum wage law is something that you guys touch on as well. I think my other question for you, Chris, is why are we specifically at the Institute for Local Self-Reliance talking about this? To me the answer is that this is really an issue of power. We're talking about decentralizing power and we're essentially arguing that decision making should be made by the people who are most affected by it. Chris Mitchell: Absolutely. Yeah, I don't know if I could even add anything to that because I think you've covered it very well. We think decisions should be made locally. We think people should have power over their own lives and if they are not allowed to legislate on important things, or even on a plastic bag law,

After Rinaldo interviews Representative Carbajal and some “Didya Knows”, the hour finishes with a story about effective techniques to make friends. Ports in Los Angeles and Long Beach Because of all of the industry and business in the ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles, there have been severe issues with air quality in the area. As a result, the ports have become great testing bed for new technologies to help decrease pollution levels. Since 2005, the ports have been working to reduce pollution by phasing out diesel trucks. In the 2017 plan, the focus was on electric and hybrid trucks as well as electric fuel cell powertrains. However, in 2018, the ports turned towards hydrogen fuel cell trucks through an agreement with Toyota to build the fuel cells and Paccar to build the actual trucks. So far, there are ten prototype trucks working, and the cities hope that it will be successful enough to phase out the 16,000 diesel trucks in use. Political Disclosure Act of 2019 Ever since the Citizens United Supreme Court decision, money has had an undue influence in our elections. More importantly, dark money has allowed money to flow to political candidates without disclosures or a sense of transparency. Representative Carbajal is reintroducing the Political Disclosure Act (HR 1053), that Republican leadership prevented from leaving committee in the last session of Congress. The bill would require all publicly traded companies to disclose all political contributions through the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). Beyond the important issue of transparency, H.R. 1053 would hold public companies accountable for the ways in which companies spend political money and the amount that they spend in a given election cycle. Making Friends The last story on the show this week emphasized seven awkward tips to help make friends. Throughout our lives, making friends is always a hardship, and we can all agree that we could use more friends. While the process of making friends is not easy, some simple tips can allow us to make friends more effectively. For example, using text messages or email to suggest something another person will find interesting is a simple way to begin a dialogue and create points of mutual interest. Similarly, it is important to make the first move. A lot of times people are nervous to begin a dialogue or just do not want to expend the effort that it takes, when a little bit of effort goes a long way to making a friend. I attended a Move2Amend meeting last night, hosted by David Cobb, who ran for President in 2004 on the Green Party ticket. Of great interest was the origins of the legal device known as the Corporation in our nation's history.  In colonial times, for a corporation to come into being, a Charter had to be granted but only after clearing both lower and upper houses of a state legislature + only after being approved of by the Royal Governor himself. The basic reason for granting such a Charter for corporation was that there existed a need for such an entity in the first place, a need not already being met. The Charter itself was only meant to last 5-10 years and had to be renewed after that time. The Charter specifically stipulated that the entity Corporation had to act in the public interest and could not DEVIATE from its sole purpose for existence If a Corporation ever violated it's Charter,  (i.e., it failed to operate in the public interest and/or deviated from its originally-intended purpose by engaging in other, unrelated activities) - that Charter could be revoked by the Governor. Under these conditions, corporations of today would fail. It was therefore a much more stringent process for approval, had much more exacting standards for conduct and behavior  and it had a set time period for duration. Move2Amend is out in force for 2013. The aim is to counter and demolish the notion that Corporation's are people and have the same rights. On May 10, 2013,  there will be a National Day of Action to call for the overturning of the 2010 Citizens United Supreme Court decision. Franklin Roosevelt put it best: "The liberty of a democracy is not safe if the people tolerate the growth of a private power to the point where it becomes stronger than their democratic state itself.  That, in essence, is fascism."

Week of: June 11 – June 18, 2012 This week’s discussion begins with the campaign fundraising results for May – including what Romney’s superior $77 million-dollar haul could signify – in addition to the infusion of corporate money (thanks to the ‘Citizens United’ Supreme Court decision) into our political process and how new media has made running for President a billion-dollar endeavor. Next, it’s on to President Obama and how long he can keep blaming the economy he inherited from Bush, before he needs to wholly take responsibility for it. This discussion is coupled – as it relates to GOP opposition – with the difference between, ‘rooting for failure’ for political advantage…and actually helping to cause failure for the same reason. With Romney essentially securing the Republican nomination, I pose my own questions to the former Governor that I would like the media to ask. Essentially demanding that he back up his repeated claims of knowing how to create jobs and grow the economy…in juxtaposition and reconciling those claims with his record as Governor, in which Massachusetts was 47th in the nation in job growth under his tenure…of which, he served only 1 term because he would be unable to win re-election. I also challenge his assertion that his time at Bain Capital should be “off-limits” in the campaign…seeing how he claims that his business experience at Bain makes him “uniquely qualified” to be President. Lastly, I respond to listener requests to discuss the (failed) results of the Wisconsin recall election of Governor Scott Walker. This includes my opinion of organized labor unions and what the recall election result could mean in the general election.
