JOEL SEGAL connects that GA campaign to his work in NC…and then explains in great detail the considerable impact of the new Biden-Manchin bill, not yet passed, on our national health care system. RON LEONARD, RAY LUTZ and TATANKA BRICCA illuminate the huge leap forward this bill also offers to the solar industry which has been under terrible attack from the US fossil/nuke dinosaurs. GREG COLERIDGE of MOVE TO AMEND then covers his organization's spectacular work—along with SAM ROSENTHAL---to reverse the horrendous SCOTUS Citizens United decision allowing big corporate money to buy our elections. Carolyn Harding with Greg Coleridge and Sandy Bolzenius organizers with Move to Amend, a movement to Amend the US Constitution to codify that Corporations are not People & Money is not speech. Greg Coleridge is Co-Director of Move to Amend. He worked for more than three decades with the American Friends Service Committee in Ohio where he educated, advocated and organized on a range of justice, peace, environmental and democracy issues -- including helping coordinate Move to Amend activities in the Buckeye state. He is the author of The Depth of Change: Selected Writings and Remarks on Social Change (2022), Citizens over Corporations: A Brief History of Democracy in Ohio and Challenges to Freedom in the Future (2003), writer of the documentary CorpOrNation: The Story of Citizens and Corporations in Ohio (2003), and contributed several articles to the anthology Defying Corporations, Defining Democracy - A Book of History and Strategy (2001). He currently maintains and distributes via email a weekly REAL Democracy History Calendar and Monetary History Calendar. Sandy Bolzenius is a longtime resident of Columbus where she has volunteered for Move to Amend for ten years. She is an Army veteran and a former international teacher with a doctorate in History from the Ohio State University. Specializing in Gender and African American studies, she is the author of Glory in Their Spirit: How Four Black Women Took on the Army during World War II (University of Illinois Press, 2018). Sandy's interest in the dynamics of gender, race, class, and public policies, drew her to Move to Amend. Additionally, local environmental concerns drew her to the Columbus Community Bill of Rights for which she also volunteers. I first heard about Move to Amend 8 years ago when I was getting started in protecting Ohio's water, air and soil regarding fracking. I was new to activism, pretty idealistic and Move to Amend seemed nebulous to me. I liked what I heard, but I wasn't sure what the game plan was. Fast forward to Now, and this proposed 28th Amendment is more clear to me. Greg Coleridge, the co-director at Move to Amend, talks about the importance of removing corporate influence, money and corruption from our government. Move to Amend calls for the “We the People” Amendment (HJR-48) to the US Constitution that unequivocally states that inalienable rights belong to human beings only, and that money is not a form of protected free speech under the First Amendment and can be regulated in political campaigns. In a nutshell, Move to Amend proposes an amendment that says corporations are not people.
David Cobb is a “people's lawyer” who has sued corporate polluters, lobbied elected officials, run for political office himself, and been arrested for non-violent civil disobedience. He believes we must provoke—and win– a peaceful revolution for a peaceful, just, sustainable and cooperative society if we are to survive. David was born in rural Texas and worked as a laborer before going to college and Law School. He maintained a successful law practice in Houston for almost a decade before devoting himself to full-time social change efforts. In 2002 David ran for Attorney General of Texas, pledging to use the office to revoke the charters of corporations that repeatedly violate health, safety and environmental laws. In 2004, he ran for President of the United States on the Green Party ticket and forced a recount in Ohio that helped launch the Election Integrity movement. In 2010 he co-founded Move To Amend, a campaign for a constitutional amendment to abolish the illegitimate, court-created doctrines of “corporate constitutional rights” and “money equals speech.” In 2016 he served as the Campaign Manager for Jill Stein's presidential campaign. In addition to his work at Cooperation Humboldt, he is a member of the North Coast People's Alliance and serves as a Fellow for the Liberty Tree Foundation for a Democratic Revolution.

Kaitlin Sopoci-Belknap, National Director of Move to Amend, talks about a proposed 28th amendment to our Constitution - an amendment that basically says “Corporations are not people.” Kaitlin explains that though the infamous “Citizens United” Supreme Court decision of 2010 asserted First Amendment rights to corporations, this was not the beginning of corporate privilege in America. Our nation has a long history of treating corporations with all the privileges of human beings, but without the responsibilities. As a result, corporations have, for a long time, acted with virtual impunity in violating human rights in this nation. When faced with deciding between human rights and corporate privilege, the courts typically decide in favor of corporations. Citizens United is just the latest example. Move to Amend calls for a new amendment to the US Constitution that unequivocally states that inalienable rights belong to human beings only. It also states that money is not a form of protected free speech under the First Amendment, and therefore it must be regulated in political campaigns. The organization embraces a set of values that includes accountability and responsibility on both a personal and organizational level, a commitment to transparency, and a recognition of the importance of community. Additionally, they are strongly committed to the elimination of oppression in all forms; individuals, communities, workplaces, policies, and political representation. In addition to being the National Director of Move to Amend, Kaitlin Sopoci-Belknap is the President of the Board of Directors of Democracy Unlimited, and a Local Democracy Fellow for the Liberty Tree Foundation. Kaitlin believes in a diversity of tactics to bring about systemic social change. She has served on numerous national and local boards, helped elect many progressive candidates to office, served as a local elected official herself for 12 years, bird-dogged candidates and politicians, citizen lobbied Congressmembers and state officials, and she has hosted a community radio station program. In the summer of 2019 she was arrested for taking part in a civil disobedience action to shut down Congress over climate collapse inaction. She and 16 other activists superglued their hands to the doors leading from Congressional office buildings to the US Capitol.

December 1It’s hard to ignore the military-industrial complex in the United States: our government spends more than HALF of the national budget on the military, awards trillions of dollars in military contracts to private corporations, and then receive hundreds of billions in lobbying money to increase that military spending. The connections between corporate oligarchy and the US military are rarely explored within "mainstream" corporate-owned news. In fact, it's more likely for corporate media to defend the American war economy with nationalist propaganda while attacking any critic or anti-war activist who might work against it."Made Love, Got War" is how journalist, author, media critic, and activist Norman Solomon describes the military-industrial complex in his book by the same name. Solomon’s lifetime in journalism and anti-war activism have combined to provide his readers with accurate and responsible reporting and analysis. Don’t miss the conclusion of our enlightening two-part conversation about the future of democracy and the fates of whistleblowers and anti-war advocates with one of the country’s foremost independent journalists and experienced activists.

MoveToAmend.org is a nationwide effort to reverse the Citizens United Supreme Court Decision. Rick Jurmain, engineer, co-owner of a very successful local corporation, and founder of Chippewa Valley Move to Amend, is passionate about reclaiming the people's rightful place over corporations, again, and he helps us learn from the historical record of American's rising up against corporate tyrants.
I attended a Move2Amend meeting last night, hosted by David Cobb, who ran for President in 2004 on the Green Party ticket. Of great interest was the origins of the legal device known as the Corporation in our nation's history. In colonial times, for a corporation to come into being, a Charter had to be granted but only after clearing both lower and upper houses of a state legislature + only after being approved of by the Royal Governor himself. The basic reason for granting such a Charter for corporation was that there existed a need for such an entity in the first place, a need not already being met. The Charter itself was only meant to last 5-10 years and had to be renewed after that time. The Charter specifically stipulated that the entity Corporation had to act in the public interest and could not DEVIATE from its sole purpose for existence If a Corporation ever violated it's Charter, (i.e., it failed to operate in the public interest and/or deviated from its originally-intended purpose by engaging in other, unrelated activities) - that Charter could be revoked by the Governor. Under these conditions, corporations of today would fail. It was therefore a much more stringent process for approval, had much more exacting standards for conduct and behavior and it had a set time period for duration. Move2Amend is out in force for 2013. The aim is to counter and demolish the notion that Corporation's are people and have the same rights. On May 10, 2013, there will be a National Day of Action to call for the overturning of the 2010 Citizens United Supreme Court decision. Franklin Roosevelt put it best: "The liberty of a democracy is not safe if the people tolerate the growth of a private power to the point where it becomes stronger than their democratic state itself. That, in essence, is fascism."

This page and podcast are produced and paid for by Tell Somebody. A new report entitled “Bombs vs. Budgets” examines the nuclear weapons lobby. According to Study author William Hartung: “…the nuclear arms lobby and its allies on Capitol Hill are seeking to block reductions in systems we don’t need at prices we can’t afford. This unnecessary spending is being pressed by some of the very same members of Congress who have argued that deficit reduction and greater spending discipline should be our top priorities.” On the June 19, 2012 edition of Tell Somebody this Tuesday at 6pm, William Hartung talks about the report and the role of the Kansas City Plant in the nuclear weapons complex. Also, in the wake of the Kansas City, Missouri city council's resoulution in support of KC Move To Amend's call to overturn Citizens United, Mark Hays, campaign coordinator for Public Citizen’s Democracy Is For People campaign talks about Resolutions Week, a push by Public Citizen and partner organizations to pass local and state resolutions nationwide.
