POPULARITY
The Honda Civic Type R is the highest-performance version of one of the most popular cars in the United States. The all-new version continues a proud legacy as the most powerful model in the Type R's 30-year history. The car is based on the 11th generation Civic Hatchback, the 2023 Type R is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine that whirs out 315 horsepower. Among its other claims to fame, it is the most powerful Honda-branded vehicle ever offered in the Unites States. The engine is matched to a six-speed manual transmission that Honda has upgraded for the new application. As co-host ChrisTeague found during his week-long test of the Type R near his Maine home, the manual is the perfect companion for the high-output engine. The big question is how will the Civic Type R accommodate Teague's lanky 6-foot tall frame? In the other road test this week, Host Jack Nerad bathed in the lap of luxury at the wheel of the 2023 Genesis GV80. The imposing luxury SUV has incredible driveway presence, and its exterior good looks are matched by one of the most luxurious interiors in its class. Under the hood, the GV80 features the choice of a 300-horsepower 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine or a 375-horsepower 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V6. Both engines are paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. Our test car was equipped with the more powerful of the two engine choices. A report in The Wall Street Journal says Tesla is in talks to build a production plant in, of all places, Saudi Arabia. But Elon Musk says the report is categorically false. Details coming up. The United States has passed the “tipping point” for electric vehicle adoption, but there's just one problem — American consumers don't seem to have gotten the message. We'll have more on that. And — Holy AI — Toyota says it is teaching its robots new tricks that are startlingly human. Should we be concerned? And if the UAW strike continues, could it be good for General Motors? We'll tell you why some think so in this episode. For those of you seeking lower car insurance rates, our special guest this week is Rory Joyce, the head of insurance at Credit Karma. Host Jack Nerad sat down with him to discuss the Karma Drive program that could save you money while making you a better driver. America on the Road is brought to you by Driving Today.com, Mercury Insurance, YourTestDriver.com, and EMLandsea.com , the publisher of Nerad's latest book, Dance in the Dark, which is available HERE on Amazon.com
Benjamin discusses his go around in the 2022 Hyundai Kona N-Line, a crossover that strives to be the median point beween the standard Kona and the speedy Kona N. Hyundai is trying to follow the path of the German M Sports and AMG Lines, but is the Kona N-Line a successful push in the right direction? Is this just a style and attitude package, a weak echo of the Pontiac Trans Am Firehawk? Sami then chimes in with his recent experience in two compact hatchbacks. A dying breed, the 2022 Honda Civic Hatchback and the Canada-only 2022 Kia Forte5 GT are both available with manual transmissions. Sami seems to think the hatchback styling of these cars stray too close to the sedan variants, and that cars like these are slowly losing their relevance to crossovers. Finally, the duo discuss high-performanc driving techniques and how they apply to driving in the snow. Listen now to get the whole scoop, and don't forget to subscribe and review.
Battery-electric crossover vehicles are the new vehicle du jour, and one of the latest to join the fray is the Kia Concept EV9, a stalking horse for the brand's upcoming production version of the vehicle. In a suddenly very crowded segment, the EV9 is one of the best-looking, and it is filled with advanced tech. To learn more about the EV9 we had the chance to talk with Karim Habib, Kia Senior Vice President and Head of Kia Design Center. What distinguishes the EV9 Concept from others that are plowing the same ground. Our interview will reveal that. In the road test segment of this week's show, Co-Host Chris Teague will be giving his thoughts on the 2022 Honda Civic hatchback. All-new for the 2022 model year, the Civic Hatchback is one of the most versatile compact cars you can buy. Also in the road test segment Host Jack Nerad and his family tested the newest version of one of the most venerable and venerated vehicles of the past several generations, the Toyota Land Cruiser. They got the chance to wring it out on several family adventures over the past 10 days, and he'll have a full report. In the news, there is new heat under the idea of flying cars. The fodder of many a future prediction in the 1950s, small vertical takeoff aircraft now might graduate from being a pipedream to becoming reality. A lot of big money has gotten behind the idea of “flying taxis.” Also in the news, Chrysler and Jeep haven't been at the forefront of the electric vehicle revolution up to now, but that might change this week, based on big announcements the brands intend to make at CES in Las Vegas. We'll give you some details.

Is the 2019 Genesis G70 the real sports sedan deal not just on the track, but in the day-to-day? Benjamin certainly thinks so after spending a week behind the wheel of the turbocharged 3.3-liter V6 model - even after having sampled the completely-redesigned BMW 3 Series the week before. Sami gets to the bottom of whether the 2019 Toyota Corolla hatchback has a chance at toppling the excellent Honda Civic hatch, just before the pair segue into the death of a longtime five-door friend of the show, the Volkswagen Golf.

Phil Minissale visited New Orleans for the first time when he was 17. An impressionable age, Phil got the bug and as the years unfolded found himself visiting the city as often as he could get here. As a traveling songwriter, Phil made his way through New Orleans on extensive tours, either playing the Blue Nile or Neutral Ground Coffeehouse each year. In 2012, with nothing but a fierce impulsive desire, Phil stuffed his 97 Civic Hatchback may she RIP with all his clothes, guitars, and potato chips. He found a place right off Napoleon and St. Charles, and not long after met an amazing community of artists, eventually befriending James Michalopoulos, owner of Celebration Distillation. Reminiscent of Old Time Traveling Medicine Shows, Phil sells New Orleans "elixirs," better known as Old New Orleans Rum and Gingeroo. Phil still plays out, sharing his acoustic folk and blues music. In a first for Midnight Menu 1 Phil plays live for Ray and Margo and the delighted assortment of folks at The NOLA Brewing Tap Room.
