The Road to Autonomy

Pete Bigelow, Senior Reporter, Automotive News joined Grayson Brulte on The Road to Autonomy podcast to discuss the current state of the mobility markets. Markets that are in flux with EV sales falling, GM rebooting Cruise, while Waymo scales and the autonomous truck industry prepares to launch commercial operations. The conversation begins with Pete sharing his insights into the electric vehicle market with the backdrop of 5,000 U.S. car dealers sending a second letter to President Biden urging the administration to “hit the brakes” on the EV push. Are these dealers urging The President to hit the brakes because non-Tesla EVs are simply not selling? The EV market can't be lumped into a monolith, it's really how certain companies are approaching a change from early adopters to mass-market consumers and that's where we get into the nitty gritty of a potential slowdown. – Pete Bigelow Tesla with an EV U.S. marketshare north of 55% continues to dominate the market. Raising the question, is there even an EV market in the U.S.? Or is the market for electric vehicles in the U.S., simply Tesla?Tesla is running away with the domestic market right now. – Pete Bigelow Could this change when BYD enters the U.S. market? If and when BYD enters the U.S. market, they will be able to undercut the Detroit automakers as their cost structure is dramatically lower. Is an $18,000 EV the tipping point that supercharges the EV market to the detriment of Detroit?Or does the potential Apple Car become the tipping point? The average Apple user spends 5 hours a day on their Apple devices. Spending more time in an Apple car would only help Apple strengthen their ecosystem and grow the services business. That's the promise of the Apple Car, they are just going to capture your attention in one more living space. – Pete Bigelow A company that has captured the attention of the industry, regulators and the overall automotive market is Cruise. The company is in the midst of a reboot following an unfortunate incident. How will the reboot work? What role will GM play in a rebooted Cruise? Will GM be forced to rebrand Cruise as they look to rebuild public trust? Grayson and Pete discuss a myriad of possible scenarios. While GM works on a reboot plan for Cruise, Waymo is expanding. When Waymo officially expands operations in the San Francisco Bay Area and Los Angeles, they will be operating in a 635 square mile ODD (operational design domain). This will be the largest deployment of autonomous vehicles anywhere in the world.Soon the autonomous trucking industry could surpass the Waymo deployment as the industry prepares to launch driver-out commercial operations later this year. The autonomous trucking industry is growing and new partnerships are being developed that will impact the industry long-term. Wrapping up the conversation, Pete shares what he is watching in the mobility markets this year.Recorded on Friday, January 26, 2024--------About The Road to AutonomyThe Road to Autonomy® is a leading source of data, insight and analysis on autonomous vehicles/trucks and the emerging autonomy economy™. We are in DC for the WANADA Public Policy Day and can't wait for the conversations ahead of us. Our good friend Andy Guelcher of Mohawk Chevrolet chats up what's coming for Chevy and it seems it is questionable on how EVs handle ice.Show Notes with links:In an Auto News interview Andy Guelcher, Chairman of the Chevrolet National Dealer Council discusses the  resurgence in vehicle supply, with the Trax subcompact crossover leading demand. along with Chevrolet's ambitious plans for 2024, including EV transitions. Dealers are experiencing improved days' supply, beneficial for consumers, following pandemic and microchip-related challenges.Chevrolet is planning major redesigns and launches, including the Traverse, Equinox, Tahoe, Suburban, and new electric models.Guelcher expressed Chevy Dealer optimism for 2024, citing strong market positions and the balance of EV and combustion engine models."The cadence of products and the refreshes are coming, and they're going to come so fast [in 2024], it's going to be mind-blowing," said Guelcher. When asked about ongoing concerns about a potential shift toward DTC sales: “Marissa West, 24 hours into her new job as the president of North America for GM, reached out to myself and a number of other dealers in a format of get-to-know calls, reiterating how important we are to the partnership. And I think that speaks volumes for Chevrolet and General Motors and [what] the next decade or more looks like.”In the chilling grip of extreme cold, electric vehicles (EVs) are sparking a debate: more resilient than gas cars, yet not without their icy challenges as ‘Tesla Graveyards' are popping up in Chicago. In Norway, where 1 in 4 cars is electric, data shows EVs fail at a lower rate than gas vehicles in extreme cold. Viking, a road assistance service, responded to 34,000 calls in early 2024; only 13% involved EVs.However, in Chicago, a recent cold wave left several Tesla cars stranded at Supercharger stations, unable to charge in temperatures dropping to 2°F (-19°C).The issue in Chicago might stem from owners not preconditioning their Tesla batteries, essential for efficient charging in cold weather.Despite these incidents, EVs generally perform better in cold conditions compared to traditional gas cars, but the technology still has room for improvement.Hosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email ASOTU Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/automotivestateoftheunion

It's a perfect Thursday to love people more than cars as we have the CEO of the CMA group, Liza Borches as our guest host to talk about the new consumer data about EV adoption sentiment. We also talk about Texas' landmark charging requirement, as well as one Service Advisor who made the Auto News 40 Under 40 list. Show Notes with links:According to new studies by J.D. Power and EY, stated consumer interest in battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) is moving forward, despite charging infrastructure challenges. The research indicates a significant shift in buying intent, with BEVs predicted to capture 27% of auto sales by 2026, emphasizing the evolving landscape of the automotive industry in the midst of persistent safety concerns. J.D. Power's study found that 21% of respondents faced issues charging their BEVs at public stations, while only 3% of Tesla owners reported such issues. Tesla leads in "charging satisfaction", but its performance is declining due to sales outpacing charger availability. The EY study highlights that 57% of respondents are concerned about the dangers of home charging, particularly fires in garages. Steve Patton of EY finds this level of fear surprising.Data from Wards Intelligence reveals that 6.9% of vehicles sold in the first half of 2023 were BEVs, with luxury vehicles making up about 75% of these sales.81% of current BEV owners are likely to buy another BEVTexas is moving forward with a groundbreaking decision to mandate Tesla's technology in EV charging stations for federal funding eligibility. This move, closely watched by other states, underscores Tesla's growing influence in shaping the U.S. charging infrastructure, despite challenges from competitors and initial resistance. The federal program requires the CCS plug at a minimum but allows states to add additional requirements before distributing funds locallyDespite opposition from some charging companies saying that the mandate would slow down the expansion of infrastructure, Texas' commission unanimously approved the plan, aiming to cover at least 97% of the state's EVs with fast charge ports.Texas, the largest beneficiary of a $5 billion program for U.S. highway electrification, is setting a precedent that other states are watching closelyCMA Valley Subaru Service Manager Carmen Hinton was featured on the homepage of today's Automotive News as one of their 2023 40 Under 40 honorees. Hosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email ASOTU Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/automotivestateoftheunion

As automakers continue to develop and test autonomous vehicle technology, is it safe to assume they're fully committed to a diligent and safe rollout? We'd like to think so, however one industry insider hints that there may be some problems hiding under the hood of GM's Cruise driverless program. Automotive News is reporting that an alleged whistleblower sent a letter to California regulators in advance to the approval of Cruise robotaxis for commercial services in the Bay Area. The anonymous letter was sent by a person claiming to be a current employee within the Cruise driverless program and allegedly describes circumstances "indicative of a very chaotic environment."The letter writer went on to say that safety issues weren't being addressed in a timely fashion and that some were even being hidden from the employees. The letter writer concluded that "employees generally do not believe we are ready to launch to the public, but there is fear of admitting this because of expectations from leadership and investors."Auto News says the California agency who received the letter hadn't said whether it had been authenticated, just that they would work to investigate the claims. As for GM, the report quotes Cruise spokesperson Drew Pusateri, who says "(The company's) safety record is tracked, reported and published by multiple government agencies … We're proud of it and it speaks for itself."Still, Automotive News points out that Cruise Robotaxis have been involved in some notable incidents recently, including one where a vehicle blocked the path of a fire engine en route to an emergency. Another was involved in an accident that resulted in injuries to occupants in both vehicles and prompted an investigation. The letter writer said they believed the company's protocols relating to these types of incidents were not "consistent with a safety-first culture."

Automotive News is calling it a “talent drain,” as it revealed this week that more executives have left the EV startup, Canoo.Canoo gained an early foothold in the EV startup race with its unique designs including “lifestyle vehicles.” These electric options, described by Canoo as a “loft on wheels” pair 250 miles of range with configurable interiors that feature wraparound backseats, better-than-average legroom and a bubble-like cockpit. Canoo also offers block-shaped delivery vans and pickups that are set to come after the lifestyle vehicle debuts later this year. But design chops are only one piece of the puzzle in automotive and in this case, Canoo has struggled with a tumultuous year that's been highlighted by the abrupt departure of its CEO, an SEC investigation and ongoing volatility with its stock price. That's a lot to take for a company that was just formed in 2017… and now there's more.Automotive News has reported that Canoo is hemorrhaging talent, citing several “key executives” who have fled the company in recent weeks. Departures, identified by an Auto News source who wished to remain confidential, include vehicle program lead Nicolas Leblanc as well as Richard Walker, who oversaw software controls. The source also said Mike de Jung and Steven Offutt, engineering experts who were some of the company's earliest employees, are also departing.
