Mario Esposito e Carlo Emilio Zummocuratori della mostra "Lucio Dalla e Roberto Roversi. Automobili.

A myth is busted - Harbor Freight plastic carts don't appear to be makeshift engine stands after all. But they do explode catastrophically! Derek also goes over some highlights of another year dealing cars at OTS - with sales and consignments including the likes of the Ferrari F50, Porsche Carrera GT, and an array of modern Ferrari Challenge cars (360 Challenge Stradale, F430 Scuderia, and 458 Speciale to name a few). He also reflects on a changing market - moving away from 60s Ferraris like 250 Lusso and 330 GTC. Jason begins with his first wave highlights - including but not limited to: Lancia Stratos, Lancia Thema 8.32, Cizeta-Moroder V16T, Saab 9000 Aero, Alfa Romeo 164 Quadrifoglio, E34 BMW M5 with an S70B56 swap, the Kwiek Classics Mercedes-Benz CLK63 AMG Black Series 6-Speed, Ford Sierra Cosworth, Merkur XR4Ti, Jeep Cherokee, and of course Derek's recently acquired Mk1 Jaguar. Derek follows with the Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint Speciale, RUF Tribute, Kimera EVO37, the Toyota 2000GT, and more recently the Porsche 911 IROC RSR (to be further explored on a future episode…) Jason remarks on many of the the other great cars he's driven for various Revelations, Ultimate Drag Race, and Ultimate Lap Battle episodes, including the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 (C8 and C4), Porsche 992 GT3 RS, Ford Mustang GTD, Ford GT (both generations), W204 Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG (including the Anderzen manual swap), Alpine A110, Audi RS6 Avant, and the Porsche Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid (the BMW M5 Touring was unfortunately not so good).

Can One Metric Define a Driving Experience? — Carmudgeon w/ Jason Cammisa & Derek Tam-Scott — Ep 217

The Carmudgeon Show

This week's episode topic comes from a listener-submitted AMA request - one worthy of its own episode. They ask - what single metric about a car's driving experience tells you the most before you drive it? === Visit http://JasonSentMe.com to get a Hagerty Guaranteed Value (TM) collector-car insurance quote!  === At first, you may think there's one straightforward answer. But you'd be wrong. Discussion begins with Jason's MK1 Volkswagen Cabriolet - a car he claims is the most fun he's ever driven. Derek roughly agrees - but counters with the Peugeot 205 Rallye, and much more substantially - the McLaren F1. But how can a nearly 40 year old subcompact convertible be as rewarding to drive as a hypercar? Mass seems like the obvious answer - but a 4000 lb car from today can often out-dance a 2000 lb car from 35 years ago. Take a Lotus Elise (perhaps, with a small cow in it) and a Rivian R1T - both will dance around a race track in a much more similarly than differently vs. any car and truck combination from even 10 years ago. Having covered that base, Jason and Derek explore other possibilities - including peak horsepower per RPM and engine configuration. Derek recalls a time when Alfa Romeo stuffed their Twin Cam four cylinder in everything from GTVs to large Ambulances - simply because it was a such a good engine despite whatever weight it was tasked to pull around. Jason decides to ask AI what it thinks, answering (oddly) with the Toyota Matrix, Honda Fit, and Nissan Versa. On theme with the MK1 Cabriolet, the boys discuss structural rigidity - which leads to another exploration of convertibles ranging from 996 Porsche 911 Cabriolet, to BMW Z3M, Mercedes-Benz SLK, and of course- the Nissan Murano Cross-Cabriolet. There's an answer for everyone out there - and more on this episode of The Carmudgeon Show. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

AWS re:Invent: Ruth Buscombe on How AWS Helps F1 Engineers Read a Million Data Points a Second

Did you know a single Formula 1 car produces 1.1 million data points every second from hundreds of sensors? That number alone sets the tone for this conversation with Ruth Buscombe, an F1 strategist, analyst, and F1TV presenter whose work sits at the meeting point of engineering precision and real time storytelling. We met at AWS re:Invent in Las Vegas, and her insights into how much pressure, judgment, and creativity are wrapped inside each decision brought the sport to life in a fresh way for anyone who has ever stared at a dashboard of metrics and wondered what really matters. This discussion goes far deeper than split times and tyre choices. Ruth explains how AWS and F1 are rethinking race strategy through real time insights and cloud compute, from TrackPulse and root-cause analysis all the way to predictive graphics that let commentary teams spot a race-defining moment before it happens. She also reflects on the sport's changing culture, the growth of new fan communities, and the shift from old telemetry to modern systems that process millions of data points every second. Her stories from the paddock at Ferrari, Alfa Romeo, and F1TV help frame just how intense the job can be when 12,000ths of a second separate pole from second place. There are moments in this conversation that remind us that F1 strategy is as much about human pattern recognition as it is about machine intelligence, and that the strongest engineers find ways to absorb pressure without losing their instinct. What stood out most was how clearly Ruth links F1 to decision making in every industry. Whether she is talking about marginal gains, pattern detection, or the discipline needed to separate noise from signal, her examples make perfect sense to both race fans and tech leaders. She shares how AWS tools allow broadcasters and engineers to interpret scenarios instantly, why the sport needed to move past manual diagnosis, and how new tools even help verify whether a driver's mistake came from a small steering slide or a split-second shift error. Her passion is infectious and her explanations cut straight to the heart of what makes the blend of live racing and cloud computing work so well. As you listen, think about how your own team makes choices under pressure and ask yourself one last question. If you were in the garage making a call with the whole world watching, which signals would you trust and how fast could you act? LUKE BROWNING TO HIT THE TRACK IN ABU DHABI FP1 AND YOUNG DRIVER TEST Atlassian Williams Racing is pleased to share that Williams Racing Academy Driver Luke Browning will drive Alex Albon's FW47 in the first free practice session at the 2025 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, and will participate in the end-of-season Young Driver Test. Luke joined the Williams Racing Driver Academy in April 2023 following his stand-out 2022 season where he secured the GB3 Championship and won the 2022 Autosport BRDC Young Driver of the Year Award. Since joining the Academy he has continued this upward trajectory, winning the Macau Grand Prix in 2023, also taking pole position and the fastest lap, and finishing the 2024 FIA Formula 3 season in third with two race wins and a podium in Monaco. As part of the Williams Racing Driver Academy's proud tradition of giving young talent a path into F1, Luke has regularly driven in the Testing of Previous Cars (TPC) and simulator programmes with the aim of preparing him for the future. He has balanced this with a successful FIA Formula 2 campaign, currently occupying third position in the standings and going into the final two races of the season in a fierce battle for the title. Luke Browning: “It's going to be an unforgettable weekend in Abu Dhabi fighting for the Formula 2 title while getting back behind the wheel of the FW47, and it's a challenge I'm going to relish. The Young Driver Test will give me a final opportunity to help the team prepare for 2026 and I'm looking forward to being part of a Formula 1 weekend for the last time this season. Thank you to everyone at the Driver Academy and Williams for the trust once again.” Sven Smeets, Sporting Director, Atlassian Williams Racing: “Luke's development continues to impress us, and we are looking forward to closing the season with him behind the wheel of the FW47. We have an incredibly talented group of drivers in the Williams Racing Driver Academy, and it is important for us to give them the opportunity to progress as they move up the ladder. These final sessions of the season will give Luke another valuable chance to learn from Alex and Carlos, the wider team, and further embed with our trackside operation as he looks towards a bright future.” Mighty Sunbeam 1000 HP to Make Post-Restoration Debut at 75th Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance  Harry Segrave beside the Sunbeam 1000 HP. (Photo: Courtesy of the National Motor. Museum) PEBBLE BEACH, CALIFORNIA (November 12, 2025) — The mighty Sunbeam 1000 HP, the first car to achieve a land speed record of 200 mph, has been asleep for over 90 years. But a team of restorers at the National Motor Museum in Beaulieu, England, is now in the process of gently waking this giant—and if all goes as planned, the restored beast will make its US debut at the 2026 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance before attempting a centennial run at Daytona the following spring.    “The process of restoring a one-off car like this takes real dedication,” noted Concours Chairman Sandra Button. “There is no pattern to be followed. It takes time and research, effort and expertise. We are thrilled to know that the National Motor Museum intends to send the restored car to Pebble Beach, to share with enthusiasts here.”   The Sunbeam 1000 HP was built to compete in the race for speed. The 100 mph barrier was first broken in 1904, and then it took more than two decades to reach 150 mph—a record Malcolm Campbell achieved in July of 1925 at the wheel of a Sunbeam 350 HP. The Sunbeam 1000 HP, crafted around two of the marque's powerful 22.4-liter Matabele aero engines placed to the fore and aft of the vehicle, came into being less than two years later and proved to be revolutionary. Driving it on the smooth sands of Daytona Beach on March 29, 1927, Harry Segrave recorded a speed of 203.79 mph.   “This car has been at Beaulieu since before I was born and feels like a member of the family, but one I never expected to run again,” said Ralph, Lord Montagu of Beaulieu. “Watching the restoration take place has been fascinating as it has revealed so much I never knew about the car. It will be quite a thrill to have the car at Pebble Beach and is a great opportunity for us to wave the flag for the National Motor Museum!” The car's restoration is now well underway. The rear engine has already been disassembled, re-machined, restored, and refitted into the frame—and it was first fired up before an adoring crowd at the Beaulieu International Autojumble in early September. The museum team is now focused on restoring the front engine. When that, too, is back together and in place, the bodywork, which has already been restored, will be reinstalled.   “Over the last three and a half years, the Museum's team have worked tirelessly to make the mighty Sunbeam 1000 HP roar again, with help from a wide range of supporters, stakeholders and heritage engineering specialists,” said Jon Murden, Chief Executive of the National Motor Museum. “Having experienced the first of the car's remarkable engines running once more, we are all now thrilled at the prospect of the Sunbeam returning to the United States for the first time in a century.”   John, the second Baron Montagu of Beaulieu, was a motoring pioneer, who campaigned for the rights of early motorists. In the 1950s, his son Edward founded what is now the National Motor Museum to honor him, and that museum shares a long history with the Pebble Beach Concours. Edward first showed a car—his 1913 Alfonso Hispano-Suiza—at Pebble Beach in 1981, and the following year, he donated the Montagu of Beaulieu Trophy, which the Concours presents annually to the best British car shown on its competition field. Ralph, the current Lord Montagu, was in attendance at the Concours this year.   To learn more about the National Motor Museum and its efforts to restore the Sunbeam 1000 HP, go to www.nationalmotormuseum.org.uk/USA.

Visit https://www.batterytender.com/ and use code HAGERTY20 for 20% off. === This week's episode covers many wins - not just motorsport-related ones! We begin with a recent trip to England, where Jason & his dream team walked away with several notable awards from the International Motor Film Awards, including Best Journalism Film for the fourth time in a row! While across the pond, Jason also makes an appearance at Gordon Murray Automotive to tour the factory and meet Gordon Murray himself, who gives a nut-and-bolt rundown of the latest and greatest, including the GMA T.50, T.50s, T.33, and T.33 Spider. Jason and crew then a detour over to Gordon's personal car and motorcycle collection, including a Mercedes-Benz McLaren SLR XP and, familiarly, a Ferrari 308 GT4. Interestingly, however, most of his favorites are manual transmission, twin-cam four cylinders - which segues into this episode's main topic at hand. Derek leads us along a history of Italian twin-cam engines, in both Fiat Lampredi and Alfa Busso forms - beginning in the 1950s and continuing for nearly 50 years. The basic architecture of these engines powered everything from the Alfa Romeo Giulia to V12-powered Ferrari 275 GTB. The evolution of these engines brought both turbocharging and supercharging into the mix, and took Lancia to win many rally championships in cars like the Lancia 037 and Delta Integrale - while also ushering along many eras of notable passenger cars including but not limited to to the Alfa Romeo 164.
