What happens when Toyota takes the humble Corolla name and turns it into a fire-breathing hot hatch?
I hate carrying my wallet. Not because I'm a prickle pockets —I swear I'll always buy my round!— but because at heart, I'm an optimiser. I don't want something else to remember, a bulge in my back pocket. I want to be able to do everything with the least baggage possible. My wallet has four cards. Just four. Bank card, credit card, driver's license, and my TVNZ access card. Until two weeks ago, I needed a card to get into the Newstalk ZB offices as well, but not anymore. We've moved to a digital swipe system, an app on our phones. Very 2025. I don't carry cash. My wallet has nowhere to put it. Except for the $2.40 in change in the centre console of the family Corolla, I don't have any cash whatsoever. I barely use my physical debit and credit cards; I just pay for everything with my phone. For the best price I still need a real card for the bus, although they've recently changed the system so that in a pinch I can pay with my phone. My library card is digital. Concert tickets are digital. Auckland FC, Air New Zealand – it's all on my phone. If all goes well with the Government's rollout, in a few months we should be able to access digital driver's licenses. In the US they've now gone one step further. As of this week, American citizens with either Google or Apple phones can upload their passports to their devices and store them in digital wallets. The systems scan your passport and then read the little chip. They compare the photo page with a biometric scan of your face. You can use it as ID for domestic travel and although you still need a physical passport for international flights, surely it won't be long until your digital ID does that too. I know what you're thinking. Digital passports, bank cards, driver's licenses. Digital swipe cards for getting into the office. What could possibly go wrong?! And I agree with you! The more that our vital ID and payment systems go digital, the more vulnerable many of these systems might be to failure, power outages, coding errors, or hacking. At least for the near future, there will be traditional options. They're not scrapping plastic driver's licences just yet. But all things being equal, I reckon 2026 might be the last year of my life in which I actually need to carry a wallet. I'm going to be first in line for a digital driver's licence. A year from now, everything I need from my cards I should be able to do my phone. And while I know there are risks, I know it's a single point of failure, I know it'll be even more of a disaster if I accidentally lose my phone. Truthfully my concerns are drowned out by an even stronger impulse. Sure, there are security concerns. But man, just think of the convenience. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Send us a textA name with three versions, a yellow Corolla packed with dreams, and a pocket full of maps: that's how Shell left Miami for Queens and built a life equal parts hustle and heart. We go deep into his winding path from singing with his brothers to turning a mall menswear store into a profit machine, from Broadway auditions and Stephen Scott's A-list bands to a chance encounter that opened the door to Cold Blue. Then, in a twist few saw coming, he sat for the Series 7, survived the grind on his fourth try, and lived the Wall Street life by weekday while fronting packed dance floors on weekends—before selling his book, investing in real estate, and re-centering on music. We trade the kind of road stories only working players know: subbing into bands where everyone stares at iPads and nobody calls a cue, count-offs that start fights, and why ten musicians can feel one groove ten different ways. The takeaway for bandleaders is simple and actionable—tighten communication, protect the rhythm section chemistry, and use clicks and cues as tools, not crutches. We also tackle the money: why $120 bar calls for three hours are breaking pros, how hobbyist saturation confuses buyers, and what it takes to restore value with better presentation, stage management, and transparent rate tiers. And yes, we confront the AI wave head-on: fully artificial “artists,” deepfakes that hijack faces and voices, and crowds cheering for screens. There's room for smart tools—sketching keys, generating arrangement ideas—but the final cut should be human. Live music still wins because thousands of tiny, in-the-moment choices create a feeling you can't fake. We saw it after 9/11 when showcases packed out and couples booked weddings in record numbers. When the world tilts, people want the band in the room. If you care about the future of gigs, the craft of performance, and why bass-and-drums chemistry decides the night, you'll feel at home here.If this resonated, follow the show, share it with a friend, and drop a review with your spiciest take: what should a real band earn in 2025?Support the show

Metal YouTuber and fellow Oregonian Taylor Danley shows up with riffs, opinions, and a tube-amp habit that could brown out a neighborhood. We trace the path from Elvis ukulele kid to extreme-metal lifer, then get into the real fight: cranked amps vs. modeling. We make the case for the Boss Tube Amp Expander (turn it up, keep your lease), why an Axe-Fx is the smartest carry-on, and how millimeters of mic placement beat a mile of copy-paste presets. We talk producers who actually make bands sound like bands (Adam D., Will Putney), the charm of leaving one or two “human” wobbles in the take, and why the Boss Katana is still the new-player cheat code. Gear heads get the goodies: Orange OR80, old Marshalls, NS-2 doing unglamorous hero work, the Metal Zone used tastefully (yes, it can be done), and the story behind Taylor's Obsidian Audio boost plus a new preamp on the way. There's record-store nostalgia, kids discovering Sabbath, a Corolla-vs-'69 Camaro tone analogy, and a very Portland pizza detour to land the plane. Good laughs, useful takeaways, zero gatekeeping.
Automotive passion takes center stage as we welcome Matt Avery, co-host of Mecum in the Morning and veteran automotive journalist with nearly two decades of industry experience. Matt shares his fascinating journey from luxury car technician to content creator, explaining how his mechanical background and storytelling skills perfectly positioned him for his current role at Mecum Auctions. The conversation shifts to an exciting upcoming event - Larry's Legacy auction featuring the extensive collection of Chicago collector Larry Klairmont. This museum-quality assemblage includes 275 vehicles and over 1,000 pieces of memorabilia, all selling at no reserve. Matt walks us through the diverse collection spanning muscle cars, Jeeps, microcars, and rare showpieces like the Golden Sahara II, while providing essential details for potential bidders about preview days and registration. We then explore the evolving landscape of car buying, examining how retail giant Costco has entered the automotive market with pre-arranged dealer pricing. The segment raises thought-provoking questions about alternative purchasing methods including Facebook Marketplace and potential Amazon car sales, highlighting both benefits and potential pitfalls for consumers navigating these non-traditional paths. The episode concludes with Don's exhilarating review of the 2025 Toyota GR Corolla - a vehicle that shares little more than a name with its mainstream counterpart. This Gazoo Racing creation delivers 300 horsepower from a modest 1.6-liter engine, paired with race-inspired handling and distinctive styling that's creating a genuine cult following among automotive enthusiasts. At $50,433 as tested, it stands as a compelling alternative to competitors like the Volkswagen Golf R and Honda Civic Type R.Whether you're a collector car aficionado, interested in new purchasing methods, or simply appreciate performance vehicles that punch above their weight class, this episode delivers insights that will enhance your automotive knowledge and feed your passion for exceptional machines.Be sure to subscribe for more In Wheel Time Car Talk! The Lupe' Tortilla RestaurantsLupe Tortilla in Katy, Texas Gulf Coast Auto ShieldPaint protection, tint, and more!Disclaimer: This post contains affiliate links. Most people are ‘driving McLarens' while ‘insured like Corollas.' In this foundational episode, Hans and Brian revisit one of their core concepts: human life value versus needs-based analysis when it comes to life insurance planning. If you're a military officer with just SGLI coverage, or anyone who thinks $500,000 is "a big check" for life insurance, this episode will fundamentally shift how you think about protecting your family's financial future. The math is sobering, but the solution is clear.Using real calculations, the hosts demonstrate why the traditional "needs analysis" approach to life insurance leaves families exposed to millions in lost income. When your economic value over a working lifetime exceeds $4-6 million, leaving your family with enough to "pay off the mortgage" isn't protection – it's a dereliction of duty. The $6 Million Gap: What You're Really WorthBrian walks through Truth Concepts software to illustrate a 40-year-old earning $150,000 annually. The shocking result: this person needs $4 million just to maintain their family's current lifestyle if they die tomorrow, and over $6 million when accounting for normal salary increases. Yet most people in this situation (military clients, at least) have just $500,000 in SGLI coverage. Why Needs Analysis Gets It WrongThe insurance industry has been improperly trained to focus on "needs" instead of true economic value. As Bob Castiglione writes: "No beneficiary, given the choice, would want only an amount of insurance that they supposedly need rather than the true value of the insured person who died."The Asset You're Not InsuringYou insure your car to full value. You insure your home to full value. But your greatest asset – your ability to produce income – is dramatically underinsured. Hans breaks down why this thinking is backwards, especially when you're guaranteed to "total" this asset eventually. How Whole Life Insurance Bridges the GapThe hosts explain how dividend-paying whole life insurance grows over time, eventually providing more death benefit than insurance companies would initially write on you. This creates a crossing point where your coverage approaches your true economic value as you age.➡️ Chapters: 00:00 - The dereliction of duty: Leaving families exposed 01:10 - Welcome back: Revisiting human life value concepts02:30 - Two approaches: Needs analysis vs. human life value 04:05 - Why we focus on fathers in our examples 06:20 - Economic life value: The better term 09:15 - Truth Concepts calculation: The $6 million reality 14:35 - Why earnings increases matter in the calculation 17:25 - SGLI exposure: Millions in lost income 24:20 - The mortgage payment fallacy 27:20 - Bob Castiglione on proper insurance thinking 30:15 - Why whole life is an asset, not an expense 32:15 - The McLaren vs. Corolla insurance analogy 34:00 - Solomon Ebner on economic forces in human value 35:20 - Questions every father should ask himselfKey Questions for Reflection:If you don't wake up tomorrow, can your wife continue staying home with the kids? Will your children maintain their quality of life? How much insurance would you want if you knew you'd die tomorrow?Got Questions? Shoot us a Text.Episode #1106: Today we're looking at a U.S.-EU trade deal that gives European automakers some relief, Toyota's ambitious product roadmap with EVs and freshened favorites, and why Sam Altman says your ChatGPT chats aren't nearly as private as you think.Show Notes with links:European automakers got a breather as the U.S. and EU struck a long-awaited trade deal, dialing back tariff threats that had been weighing on the industry. The U.S. will apply a 15% tariff on EU goods, easing pressure from the previously targeted 25%.Stocks of German automakers like BMW, Mercedes, and Volkswagen initially surged on the news.Barclays analysts note the 15% rate is six times higher than pre-Trump levels. The EU may cut its 10% tariff on U.S. imports, benefiting BMW and Mercedes, which export U.S.-built models back to Europe.BMW and VW are also hoping for additional relief tied to U.S. investments.Barclays: “Logging in 15% tariffs as a run-rate will still represent a year-on-year headwind in 2026 versus 2025.”Toyota's next four years will be packed with new EVs, freshened best-sellers, and a surprising push to keep sedans relevant. The Highlander will go all-electric in 2025, following the new Grand Highlander.A three-row electric crossover (bZ5X) will launch from Kentucky late 2025.RAV4 redesign moves up to 2025 with new platform, safety, and infotainment upgrades.Toyota continues investing in sedans — Corolla freshens in 2025, Camry will be redesigned in 2028.A Compact Corolla-based pickup in development is set to rival Ford Maverick, expected in 2027.Akio Toyoda's GR Supra may end production in 2026, though emotions could keep it alive.Millions are sharing deeply personal issues with AI, but a surprising admission from OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has lawyers — and plenty of everyday users — buzzing. He admitted last week that ChatGPT conversations don't carry the same confidentiality as talks with a lawyer, doctor, or therapist, raising big questions about privacy in the AI age.Altman: “We should have the same concept of privacy for your conversations with AI that we do with a therapist or whatever — and we haven't figured that out yet.”Legal experts warn that without privilege, user data could be subpoenaed if OpenAI stores it.OpenAI notes that with chat history off — especially on paid plans — data isn't saved or used for training.Enterprise-level ChatGPT offers encryption and compliance, but the free and Plus versions lack those safeguards.0:00 Intro with Paul J Daly and Kyle Mountsier1:43 Upcoming ASOTU Edge Webinar with CarRx2:20 US Trade Deal With EU Is 15% Tariffs4:30 Toyota's 4 Year Roadmap7:42 ChatGPT Doesn't Provide Legal ConfidentialJoin Paul J Daly and Kyle Mountsier every morning for the Automotive State of the Union podcast as they connect the dots across car dealerships, retail trends, emerging tech like AI, and cultural shifts—bringing clarity, speed, and people-first insight to automotive leaders navigating a rapidly changing industry.Get the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/

From run-ins with New Age demonologists to white knuckling a Corolla on a third-world road in America, the boys recount their trips to hell—one on water, the other in the Virgin Islands. They also dive into the Toad controversy, the cowardice of the comedy elite, and the latest in Nephilim Death Squad merch drops. Whether it's invoking Jesus in a pagan moon temple or identifying spiritual shock collars through Jimmy Buffett lyrics, this episode is part exorcism, part roast, and all righteous.☠️ NEPHILIM DEATH SQUAD Skip the ads. I share my top EV tips—test-drive via rentals, master destination charging, and enjoy the road-rage. It's a lively, no-nonsense guide for anyone eyeing a smoother, quieter ride, Vegas or beyond. Kelly shares a Marine Corps wife's essay (titled "Cincinnatus") honoring her husband's quiet retirement after 20 years of service. Instead of ceremonies, his legacy lives in small, meaningful actions like giving away his expensive uniform to help a young officer and driving a beat-up Corolla with a trunk full of first aid supplies - so he can help anyone, on a moment's notice. It's a moving reminder that true service isn't captured in plaques or uniforms but in "small private acts of dedication" and the humble wisdom to know that our real legacy is "to give it all away. The Unnamed Automotive Podcast gets their helmets on, beefs up their suspension, and hits the unpaved road this week as our hosts review two rally-inspired cars. The show starts off with Benjamin's review of the Ford Mustang Mach-E Rally, which gets more power, stylish upgrades and extra armor for its battery, all for tackling the great unpaved wilderness. However, weight and grip may have shifted Benjamin's experience with this all-weather EV. Then Sami jumps into an honest-to-goodness, high-performance Toyota, with the GR Corolla. Yes, it's designed by Toyota, developed by Toyota and made by them too, but in this episode, Sami gets to try out the automatic version of this rally-oriented hot hatch. The conversation drifts its way through the typical hot-hatch territory, as the guys talk about some of their favorites in the segment. Thanks for listening!

Putting a wing on anything just makes it more fun. Even if its aero manipulation is moot, adding a wing lifts the fun levels on just about anything, and the latest Toyota Corolla is no exception. Toyota's Corolla FX might technically be a nod to a Corolla hatchback of yore but now exists in sedan form with sporty styling. Built on the bones of the Corolla SE, the Corolla adds a wing to the trunk lid, a new set of 18-inch wheels, and some new design elements. While the Corolla FX does get some sporty visual enhancements, the Corolla FX still uses the same 2.0-liter I4 that feeds 169 hp and 151 lb-ft of torque through a continuously variable transmission and to the front wheels. On this episode of Quick Spin, host Wesley Wren hops behind the wheel of the 2025 Toyota Corolla FX and puts it through its paces. Wren takes you on a guided tour of the Corolla FX and highlights some of his favorite features. Later, Wren takes you along for a live drive review of the Corolla FX. Adding to these segments, Wren chats with Autoweek's Patrick Carone about the 2025 Toyota Corolla FX, volume knobs, and fun compact commuter cars. Closing the show, the pair break down what makes the 2025 Toyota Corolla FX special.

One last episode of the Unnamed Automotive Podcast to enjoy before the new year! This time Sami and Benjamin take a look at the hybrid, all-wheel-drive sedans in the Toyota lineup, starting with Sami's review of the 2025 Toyota Camry XSE AWD. Now exclusively available as a hybrid, this Camry has a whole new look and powertrain, but how does it compare to the Honda Accord Hybrid the guys talked about last week? And why does Sami feel a strange tapping in his back every time he stops? Then Benjamin brings up the smaller, more affordable 2025 Toyota Corolla Hybrid AWD, which delivers solid fuel efficiency, but is lacking other positive distinguishing factors, especially compared to other options in this segment. He also chimes in with some impressions about the 2025 Chevrolet Equinox EV. Finally the guys answer some listener questions about Chinese automakers taking over certain markets. Thanks for listening everyone, we'll see you in the new year!
This week Bryan talks about buying a new car.
