Marty sits down with Infra to discuss how decades of globalization and financialization have hollowed out American manufacturing, created massive wealth inequality, and led to a "silent depression" marked by declining real wages, rising deaths of despair, and social dysfunction that can only be addressed through economic nationalism, dollar devaluation, and a shift toward productive rather than financial assets like Bitcoin.

Labelbox CEO Manu Sharma joins a16z Infra partner Matt Bornstein to explore the evolution of data labeling and evaluation in AI — from early supervised learning to today's sophisticated reinforcement learning loops.Manu recounts Labelbox's origins in computer vision, and then how the shift to foundation models and generative AI changed the game. The value moved from pre-training to post-training and, today, models are trained not just to answer questions, but to assess the quality of their own responses. Labelbox has responded by building a global network of “aligners” — top professionals from fields like coding, healthcare, and customer service, who label and evaluate data used to fine-tune AI systems. The conversation also touches on Meta's acquisition of Scale AI, underscoring how critical data and talent have become in the AGI race. Here's a sample of Manu explaining how Labelbox was able to transition from one era of AI to another:It took us some time to really understand like that the world is shifting from building AI models to renting AI intelligence. A vast number of enterprises around the world are no longer building their own models; they're actually renting base intelligence and adding on top of it to make that work for their company. And that was a very big shift. But then the even bigger opportunity was the hyperscalers and the AI labs that are spending billions of dollars of capital developing these models and data sets. We really ought to go and figure out and innovate for them. For us, it was a big shift from the DNA perspective because Labelbox was built with a hardcore software-tools mindset. Our go-to market, engineering, and product and design teams operated like software companies. But I think the hardest part for many of us, at that time, was to just make the decision that we're going just go try it and do it. And nothing is better than that: "Let's just go build an MVP and see what happens."Follow everyone on X:Manu SharmaMatt Bornstein Check out everything a16z is doing with artificial intelligence here, including articles, projects, and more podcasts.
"Each rack can deliver 2 crores of revenue versus 6 lakh rupees from data centers." This striking comparison from A.S. Network APIs are heralded as a game changer in the ongoing struggle of 5G operators to make a good return on their enormous investments in building these highly capable networks. Unlike previous attempts, stars might be aligning this time to make APIs successful. Aduna was formed by a collaborative effort between Infra major Ericsson and scores of handpicked large global 5G operators. In this episode, I speak to Anthony Bartolo, CEO of Aduna. We discuss the reasons for Aduna's existence, how it collaborates with the GSMA's Open Gateway initiative and the Linux Foundation's CAMARA project, typical use cases, target verticals, traction so far, the role of hyperscalers, who have their own large app ecosystems, which is crucial for API proliferation, and more. We also delve into Aduna's business and revenue model, how other players can join, what the future holds, and how the company defines the success of this effort.
In this episode of the a16z AI podcast, a16z Infra partners Guido Appenzeller, Matt Bornstein, and Yoko Li explore how generative AI is reshaping software development. From its potential as a new high-level programming abstraction to its current practical impacts, they discuss whether AI coding tools will redefine what it means to be a developer. Why has coding emerged as one of AI's most powerful use cases? How much can AI truly boost developer productivity, and will it fundamentally change traditional computer science education? Guido, Yoko, and Matt dive deep into these questions, addressing the dynamics of "vibe coding," the enduring role of formal programming languages, and the critical challenge of managing non-deterministic behavior in AI-driven applications.Among other things, they discuss:The enormous market potential of AI-generated code, projected to deliver trillions in productivity gains. How "prompt-based programming" is evolving from Stack Overflow replacements into sophisticated development assistants. Why formal languages like Python and Java are here to stay, even as natural language interactions become common. The shifting landscape of programming education, and why understanding foundational abstractions remains essential. The unique complexities of integrating AI into enterprise software, from managing uncertainty to ensuring reliability. Today we have Søren from Prisma on the show. Prisma has been the most popular ORM in the TypeScript world for a while, and now they're moving more into hosted infrastructure. We spend a lot of time talking about their new offering called Prisma Postgres, which is this unikernel-based Postgres offering. It's a really unique offering from both a technical and a product perspective. On the technical side, they're doing some interesting work compared to other Postgres providers. They're running on bare metal in a colocation facility rather than the default public clouds like AWS, GCP, and Azure. Further, they're using unikernels in a Firecracker VM, giving them unique startup and security characteristics. These technical decisions give them unique economics compared to standard providers, so they're able to have a generous free tier and a unique billing model that works great for serverless applications with spiky workloads. Around all of this, it's very interesting to see a company with such a unique spread of products — a popular, mature open-source library paired with a mission-critical infrastructure service offering. We talked about the difficulties in building a company that accommodates these two very different products. Today we are joined by Dr. R.P. Oates, founder of INergy Wellness in Friday Harbor, Washington. R.P. is a multidisciplinary scientist who's previous career spans two decades of research experience across chemistry, toxicology, and biotechnology. Holding an MS in Organic Chemistry with a focus on photochemistry and a PhD in Toxicology focused on how physical forces in nature impact biological systems. At INergy Wellness, R.P. now offers personalized sessions of FDA-cleared full body red light therapy, Infra red sauna, and cold plunge for optimal cellular wellness designed to guide clients toward their own unique path to wellness on San Juan Island. For those curious about the book quote we discussed in the interview, here it is below!“The best thing for being sad," replied Merlin, beginning to puff and blow, "is to learn something. That's the only thing that never fails. You may grow old and trembling in your anatomies, you may lie awake at night listening to the disorder of your veins, you may miss your only love, you may see the world about you devastated by evil lunatics, or know your honour trampled in the sewers of baser minds. There is only one thing for it then — to learn. Learn why the world wags and what wags it. That is the only thing which the mind can never exhaust, never alienate, never be tortured by, never fear or distrust, and never dream of regretting. Learning is the only thing for you. Look what a lot of things there are to learn."TH White, from the book The Once and Future King
