You'll find out when you press play. Luke also has opinions on the lack of regulation with AirBnB. It turns out Luke is staying on Folly Beach where Mike used to live! So Mike shares plenty of stories about his roommate, his job, being on TV and the Civil War. We have MULTIPLE emails this week and we dive into both of them with tremendous fervor! We finally close the book on the Radiohead debate which also includes a debate about which definition of punk music is the one to rule them all. The email segment also provides a fantastic segment on Bill Bonds versus Mort Crim. Which of these Detroit TV anchors was the better anchor of the two? Bonds versus Crim is a controversy that will never end. Throw in some Coleman A. Young banter and you have a recipe for madness! The shows closes out pondering the apparent struggle for aging rappers. With the recent deaths of Shock G and DMX, does the hip-hop community foster an environment for aging artists or does it promote a live fast, get rich and die trying attitude? If anybody was taking bets in the early 1960s, Coleman A. Young would have been a true longshot for getting himself elected to just about anything. He held any number of jobs from the late 1940s to the early 1960s, and ran unsuccessfully for public office on three occasions. But his fortunes changed. His dogged determination, refusal to bow to a House Un-American Activities Committee witch hunt, and a remarkable primary victory in 1973 made Detroit mayoral history. We explore his ride to the mayor's office, with former Channel 2 reporter Al Allen, Detroit mayoral candidate John Mogk, and others.

L. Brooks Patterson, who died Saturday at age 80 at his home in Independence Township, was one of the Detroit area’s most consequential and controversial figures in local politics. To some, he represents the ascendancy of an economic powerhouse, in Oakland County, and the very pinnacle of good governance and fiscal stewardship. But he’s also a key player in the region’s ugly racial divides, through his bitter rivalry with former Detroit Mayor Coleman A. Young and his history as an attorney fighting bussing and school integration in the 1970s. Patterson was diagnosed earlier this year with pancreatic cancer, and while there were plenty of signs that the modern era was starting to pass him by, there is no denying that he left a major mark on the regional — and on regional politics. On today’s show, I go back in time to when I was covering politics in the mid-aughts for The Oakland Press. We hear from state Sen. Jim Runestad, R-White Lake, who worked with Patterson when he served on the Oakland County Board of Commissioners. And I speak with the guy whose desk was across the divider wall from mine, Steve Huber. He covered Patterson for the OP starting when he was still the county prosecutor, then later transitioned to a job in communications in Patterson’s office. Then Jer and I share our own thoughts about Patterson’s complicated legacy. Thanks for listening to Daily Detroit. Coleman A. Young and George Crockett are a few of the Detroiters that show up in "A Good American Family" by David Maraniss, a chronicle of Maraniss' father's being swept up in the "Red Scare" of the 1950s. Motherhood's sometimes not-so-happy endings are the subject of the fiction collection "Look How Happy I'm Making You" by Michigander Polly Rosenwaike. Albert Kahn contributed many great buildings to Detroit, but was he also the father of early 20th Century Modernist architecture? His legacy and the place of gargoyles in city's skyline are explored in many great new books on Detroit buildings.

In the concluding episode of a two-part series, Jaye continues her discussion on the decline of the United States within the framework of her hometown, Detroit, Michigan. She discusses the conditions in Detroit prior to the 1967 Detroit riots that led to the riots and the decline of the city, including workplace discrimination, housing segregation, the destruction of tight-knit black communities by urban renewal, racial strife between white and black Detroiters, and tensions between police and the community. As Detroit is making its comeback, what lessons can Americans learn from Detroit that will help the US survive its "fifth quarter?" Thank you for listening!
