Discover how dreams, community, and history intertwine in the heart of Detroit with Shalece Daniels. Listen to our conversation about transformative community initiatives and personal journeys on the Detroit is Different podcast. Transitioning from personal history to present endeavors, Shalece and Khary delve into the significance of community work and homeownership in Detroit. Shalece's involvement in two dynamic initiatives—Renewed Homes and Black Leaders Detroit—highlights her commitment to serving the community by providing opportunities for financial literacy and homeownership education. Renewed Homes focuses on rehabilitating properties for individuals who might otherwise struggle with creditworthiness, offering pathways to ownership below market value. Still crushing it during San Diego Comic Con with some awesome interviews!! Boom! Studios is a great partner when it comes to interviews, especially during comic cons! One of these awesome interviews was with their team behind Sirens of the City! A comic book that I have subsequently added to my pull list! We spoke with Joanne Starer and Khary Randolph! "New York City. 1980s. Runaway teen Layla struggles to survive the mean streets, far from home. Meanwhile, every supernatural creature–from sirens to incubi–descend upon the city…all in vying for control of Layla and the child-to-be she never wanted growing inside her." This is a really cool concept! A concept that, sure, has been done before, but not in the way that Joanne and Khary are doing it now! Not only do we get a main character who is going through life, trying not to become the person that she was destined to be, but we also get a heavy dose of monsters in the form of sirens and incubi! Plus, Khary does a phenomenal job of recreating New York for this world! A monthly story, make sure that you pick it up at your local comic book shop! Today on the As Told By Nomads podcast, Khary Lazarre-White joins Tayo to talk about racial narratives in the US and his organization, The Brotherhood Sister Sol. The pair opens this conversation by introducing the audience to the lack of funding present in minority communities. Given this lack of funding, in combination with familiar stereotypes and narratives regarding black intelligence and athletic ability, for example, it's no wonder that young children in black and LatinX communities are discouraged from breaking free from the boxes they were confined to. Khary took it upon himself, however, to create The Brotherhood Sister Sol, a nonprofit that helps young black and LatinX Americans claim the power of their history, identity, community, and education. In spite of fighting a rather uphill battle, Khary is incredibly passionate about helping children take back their own narratives. It's time to start debunking the common misconceptions that black people only have futures in music or athletics, that they're violent, that they're drug addicts, etc. After all, the perpetuation of these notions obscure black and LatinX histories, generational trauma, futures, and the link between poverty and violence. Khary goes on to talk about the American obsession with crime, and how the sheer volume of crime series on TV and racist news propaganda criminalizes the young black man in the American psyche. Through Khary's organization, Brotherhood Sister Sol, he hopes to help black and LatinX transcend the boundaries that have been created for them. Dr. Khary Polk is an Associate Professor at Amherst College. He talks about his book: Contagions of Empire: Scientific Racism, Sexuality, and Black Workers Abroad, 1898 - 1948
Executive Director of Bro/Sis Harlem
Khary Oronde Polk is the author of Contagions of Empire: Scientific Racism, Sexuality, and Black Military Workers Abroad, 1898-1948, published by the University of North Carolina Press in 2020. Contagions of Empire examines how the shifting views of Black military through the first half of the 20th century, as the U.S. increased its global empire and warfare. At once viewed as both contagious and immune, Black workers attempted to navigate the complex pathways that were left open in the military, even as they were seen as simultaneously integral and threatening to both the U.S. military and nation state. Polk's work shows not just how scientific racism developed during this period and how U.S. militarism expanded, but how the Black community responded at each step. Khary Oronde Polk is an Associate Professor of Black Studies and Sexuality, Women's and Gender Studies at Amherst College. Derek Litvak is a Ph.D. student in the department of history at the University of Maryland.
