In his annual RSA Chief Executive's Lecture, Andy Haldane examines the profound socio-economic consequences of eroding social capital, a theme famously explored by Harvard political scientist Bob Putnam in Bowling Alone. While macroeconomic advancements helped address past crises like the Great Depression, today's challenge lies in confronting the "Great Division”, the deepening fractures within and between societies. Despite unparalleled global connectivity, communities are fragmenting, leading to slowed economic growth, reduced social mobility, rising loneliness, and declining trust in institutions. Highlighting the critical role of social capital in fostering growth, health, and governance, Andy calls for a transformative shift in policy aiming to address the root causes of contemporary social and economic divides.SpeakerAndy Haldane, RSA CEOChairJulia George, JournalistBecome an RSA Events sponsor: https://utm.guru/ueemb Follow RSA Events on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thersaorg/ Follow the RSA on Twitter: https://twitter.com/theRSAorg Donate to the RSA: https://thersa.co/3XPiI1k Like RSA Events on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/theRSAorg/ Listen to RSA Events podcasts: https://bit.ly/35EyQYU Join our Fellowship: https://www.thersa.org/fellowship/join

Jesus has a lot to say about discipleship. When Jesus called His disciples, He didn't invite them to merely believe in Him. They were to follow Him with their whole lives. He encouraged those wanting to follow Him to “count the cost” of living for Him. He challenged them to let the old things in their former, dead lives "be buried.” We must count the cost of following Christ—which is death.

Luke 14:25-35 // The way of Jesus comes at a great cost — the kingdom of God must not simply come first but a follower of Jesus must be willing to write a blank check with their life. The good news is that Jesus has gone before us in this cost, and invites us to preserve our life and all it's flavor by following him.

Traditional Worship | Bishop Bob Hayes | What if I told you that every Christian has the power and the capacity to think, act and maintain the same focus and values that Jesus had — would you believe me? Well, the truth is, we do! This is the message that the Apostle Paul proclaimed when he boldly declared that once we accept the free gift of salvation given to us through the life, death and resurrection of Jesus, we are given the “mind of Christ.” Even though we will never know all that our Savior knew, it is up to us to discover what it means to think like Jesus and have the same attitude and mindset our Lord possessed. In this five- week sermon series, we will explore how every Christian believer can model the life of the greatest mind that ever lived. Welcome to our Traditional worship service!

Pastor Mike Nafziger Sermon: Following Jesus: Counting the Cost Passage: Matthew 16.21-28 Series: Following Jesus September 25, 2024
This week, Loren and Amber discuss the cost of following Christ, especially when one's cherished way of life might be at stake. Is it wrong to defend our rights as Americans or to fight to keep the privileges we've always enjoyed? Is it wrong to allow others to infringe on those rights and privileges? What makes us truly Christian and truly patriotic? As we dig deeper into Christian Nationalism and the Doctrine of Dominionism, we're finding some profound theological questions popping up, ones that challenge our notions of "right" and "wrong" when it comes to God, politics, and love of country.

57 As they were going along the road, someone said to him, “I will follow you wherever you go.” 58 And Jesus said to him, “Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.” 59 To another he said, “Follow me.” But he said, “Lord, let me first go and bury my father.” 60 And Jesus said to him, “Leave the dead to bury their own dead. But as for you, go and proclaim the kingdom of God.” 61 Yet another said, “I will follow you, Lord, but let me first say farewell to those at my home.” 62 Jesus said to him, “No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.”Luke 9:57-62COUNTING THE COSTTHE WAY OF JESUS18 While walking by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon (who is called Peter) and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. 19 And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.”[b] 20 Immediately they left their nets and followed him. 21 And going on from there he saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets, and he called them. 22 Immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.Matthew 4:18-1935 The next day again John was standing with two of his disciples, 36 and he looked at Jesus as he walked by and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God!” 37 The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus. 38 Jesus turned and saw them following and said to them, “What are you seeking?” And they said to him, “Rabbi” (which means Teacher), “where are you staying?” 39 He said to them, “Come and you will see.” So they came and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day, for it was about the tenth hour. 40 One of the two who heard John speak and followed Jesus was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother. 41 He first found his own brother Simon and said to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which means Christ). 42 He brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon the son of John. You shall be called Cephas” (which means Peter).John 1:35-4238 And he arose and left the synagogue and entered Simon's house. Now Simon's mother-in-law was ill with a high fever, and they appealed to him on her behalf. 39 And he stood over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her, and immediately she rose and began to serve them.Luke 4:38-39On one occasion, while the crowd was pressing in on him to hear the word of God, he was standing by the lake of Gennesaret, 2 and he saw two boats by the lake, but the fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets. 3 Getting into one of the boats, which was Simon's, he asked him to put out a little from the land. Luke 5:1-3When the disciples said “yes” to following Jesus, they were choosing to follow Him from now on as their rabbi.“Contrary to what many assume, Jesus did not invite people to convert to Christianity. Bu that's missing from this diagnosis is that the unspiritual life is even harder. Life is hard, with or without God. But what's really hard—nearly unbearable for some—is facing the pain and suffering of life apart from God. So is trying to save yourself rather than be saved. This last Sunday Alex taught us through Luke 14v25-35. In this passage, Jesus gives multiple examples of the cost of discipleship. The West at large has bought into a costless gospel - that is, the idea that you can become a Christian without the demands of being a disciple. The demand of discipleship is love - a singular love that orders your entire life. And while many will say the cost of discipleship is what you say no to for Jesus, the real cost is the price of not living in His love. The joy of loving Him and being loved by Him, is immeasurably greater than any earthly thing we could give up. Be invited once again to acknowledge your need for him and surrender to His loving leadership. Link to Sermon Guide & Activations: 07.21.24 Sermon Guide

A prayer based on Matthew 26:31-35. Mai Sing was near death, in a septic state, after a 2 day journey to Memorial Christian Hospital. Staff fought to save this mother who came from an idol worshiping village, and during six weeks of recovery at the hospital, she and her husband decided to follow Jesus. The family would never be the same. They hungered to learn more about the son of God they now identified with, but faced harsh consequences for their choice to follow Jesus when they returned to their village. Being a disciple of Jesus is more than adherence to a set of beliefs or acceptance to a momentary call; following Christ in this world changes everything. To say “yes” to Him might mean saying “no” to other things that we love.
