I was introduced to Jess Jocoy's music by Graham Jackson, a gentleman actively supporting Americana Music in the UK. I met Graham when he attended a Folk Alliance International Conference in Kansas City some years ago and introduced me to the UK's Danni Nicholls, the subject of another episode of this podcast. Graham regularly listens to my radio show online in the UK. We have similar musical tastes and I trust his judgment for music recommendations. Jess was raised two hours south of Seattle. As you'll discover in this conversation, she is following her dream of writing and singing country music by relocating to Nashville to attend college and plant her lyrical flag. Like thousands of others, Jess' cross-country travels were brought to a stop in 2020, when the Covid-19 pandemic halted her touring career. At the time, she was riding a wave of critical acclaim for Such a Long Way, a debut album inspired by grief, gratitude, the loss of her father, and the love of creating music. No Depression hailed the record's “insightful, open-hearted songs” and “smooth blend of traditional country and folk sounds,” while American Songwriter praised the “mournful effervescence” of songs like “The Ballad of Two Lovers.” The iconic radio station WSM, home to the Grand Ole Opry, made Jess their “Artist of the Week,” and her music even made its way onto national television, where she performed “Easy” during an episode of NBC's Songland. Those childhood dreams of making her mark in the same town as her musical heroes had finally started to come true, only to be postponed by a disease that sent the entire world indoors. It was an honor and privilege to extend the first opportunity to be interviewed on the radio to Jess. We started the session by launching immediately into a live performance of “Constellations” from her 2021 release “Brighter Eyes.” Enjoy.

Hailing from Bedfordshire, England, growing up on the American roots music of her Anglo-Indian grandmother's record collection, singer/songwriter Danni Nicholls has been paving her way in UK Americana for over a decade, building a loyal fan base and much critical praise. “I absolutely love the beauty and elegance of her music” - Bob Harris, BBC Radio 2. With the wind still in her sails from three consecutive Americana Music Association UK award nominations (Album, Artist and Song of the year in 2017, 2018 & 2020 respectively) plus extensive tours and opening slots with the likes of The Secret Sisters, Shakin' Stevens and Lucinda Williams, Danni, her powerful, arresting voice and her dynamically poetic original songs are ever-gaining presence and reach. April 12th 2019 saw the release of Danni's third studio album The Melted Morning. Produced by Jordan Brooke Hamlin (The Indigo Girls, Lucy Wainwright-Roche) at the idyllic woodland studio MOXE, Nashville TN, The Melted Morning is a collection of closely personal yet widely relatable songs. The themes of this album span an array of life's takeaways; from the pain and darkness of rejection, the fear of losing yourself and the power of human connection to offering up hope, light and new perspectives in the face of adversities. “I needed a new challenge, a new landscape to work in sonically, physically, energetically and viscerally. Collaborating with Jordan and this incredible team of women gave me that opportunity and we have created a delicate, vibey, honest and vulnerable collection of songs. We dove deep to find out who they wanted to become”. This team team is made up of the cream of the Nashville crop including Annie Clements (Maren Morris, Amos Lee), Larissa Maestro (Margo Price) Jordan Hamlin (Brandi Carlile, Katie Herzig), Engineer, Gena Johnson (Jason Isbell, John Prine) and background vocals from grammy award nominated duo The Secret Sisters. “Working with almost exclusively women for this project felt like the most natural and obvious path, partly out of a desire for a whole new record-making experience and knowing wholeheartedly I wanted to work with Jordan in this inspiring safe-haven she has built and partly because it just feels good and important to play a small part in addressing the ongoing gender imbalance in the music industry. But mostly because I admire and respect these people immensely and felt they were the absolute right people to help bring these songs to life”. Her vibrant, captivating performances are guaranteed to melt your heart into the soles of your boots. Danni's passionate delivery, captivating velvet voice and charmingly engaging between-song banter compel you to fall under her spell. One of my favorite features of the annual Folk Alliance International conference is the Folk DJ reception. It is a wonderful opportunity to meet Roots Music Artists and their representatives up close and personal. At that reception in 2018, I was approached by a British gentleman, Graham Jackson, asking if I would be willing to meet an Americana artist from the UK, Danni Nicholls. We made arrangements to have a sit down conversation with Danni in the KKFI suite the next day. It was a lovely introduction to her special brand of roots music… that to date has garnered her two consecutive Americana Music Association UK Award nominations… one each for Album and Artist of the year. Danni has played shows with the likes of Lucinda Williams, Sturgill Simpson, and The Secret Sisters and been invited to play at festivals around the world including Cambridge Folk, Americanafest and Folk Alliance International. She is a beautiful and elegant woman and it shows in her music. Her most recent work, The Melted Morning, is very personal but widely relatable… the pain and darkness of rejection, the fear of losing your own identity and the power of human connection to offer up hope in the face of life’s many challenges. Enjoy these few stolen moments with the very talented Danni Nicholls. Now that’s Americana….UK Style!
