The Accidental Leader
The one word every Accidental Leader needs to know

The Accidental Leader

There is a word that has been on my mind a lot lately when it comes to leadership - quality. It's a word that gets tossed around so flippantly that it has practically lost all meaning. You've heard it in strategy decks, seen it on mission statements, maybe even mumbled it yourself after a decent cup of coffee, but what is quality, really? Could you define it, and if you could, would your definition match anyone else's?Listen in as I spend a little bit of time poking at that question, not in a clean, tidy, here's-your-five-step-framework kind of way but more like walking through fog with a flashlight. The word quality has been chewing on my brain, and I'm pulling in Robert M. Pirsig's books that have really transformed how I think about this - Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance and Lila.Quality isn't just a rating or a checklist. It's not even fully definable. It's a feeling, something between the subject and the object. You sense it in a perfectly run meeting or in a Slack thread that just clicks. You also sense it when something's off and you can't quite put your finger on why.As accidental leaders, we're often handed static systems - processes, org charts, old habits, but what if your edge is actually in the change, the creativity, the “what if we tried this instead?” That's what I'm exploring today - not necessarily answers but better questions. If you have read all the books and sat through all the webinars and you're still wondering what's missing, then this might be the episode for you, but fair warning: it might raise more questions than it answers, but, again, maybe that's the point!Time Stamps:[1:20] - The word quality is widely used yet rarely defined in a meaningful, shared way.[4:09] - Quality is the intuitive harmony between subject and object, easier felt than defined or explained.[6:57] - True leadership comes from balancing structure with creativity.[9:17] - Quality can't be clearly defined, only sensed and embodied through care, presence, and intentionality.[12:44] - Recognize and pursue what feels high-quality to you; that's how accidental leaders grow into real ones.[15:18] - Quality ultimately is not a finish line; it's the compass guiding leadership, intuition, and meaningful decisions.[17:01] - Persig's struggle to define quality reveals its depth and its power to transform your leadership!Resources:The Accidental Leader - Websiteyournarketing.cobo@yourmarketingco.comBo McDonald on LinkedInRobert M. As Betterment's Director of Behavioral Science, Dan Egan knows that understanding human behavior is key to your client's financial success. But knowing that's true and knowing what to do about it are two different things. There are a lot of opinions thrown around in the behavioral finance space on what works and what doesn't. And you probably don't want to “test” some of these ideas on clients you hope to work with for 10-30 years. For years, Dan has been testing behavioral finance interventions to figure out what actually works (and what is a waste of time). In this episode, he reveals proven ideas you can implement to enhance your client's outcomes without having to go through your own trial-and-error process. What You'll Learn: How to frame taxes to prevent impulsive decisions How visualizing goals makes saving more consistent Why you should NOT engage clients during a market downturn How robo-advisors actually enhance the value of human advisors The two types of clients most likely to panic during market volatility *To sign up for Brendan's newsletter packed with resources to master the human side of advice → Click Here Resources: "Siddhartha" by Hermann Hesse "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance" by Robert M. Welcome to The Spark—your weekly creative pick-me-up from The Creative Boom Podcast. Every Thursday, we bring you a shorter, snappier episode filled with inspiration, creative news, and practical tips to carry you through the week. Whether you need motivation or insights, we've got you covered! In this episode, host Katy Cowan reflects on her recent visit to Manchester and a heartfelt conversation with David Sedgwick, founder of Studio DBD. After nearly a year away from the city and a challenging year recovering from a back injury, Katy reconnects with both Manchester and a new friend in Dave. The two discuss the importance of resilience, kindness, and what truly defines success in the creative industry. Dave's insights remind us that success isn't about size or money but feeling proud of what you've built, and he reflects on the value of authentic relationships and collaboration. In Creative News this week, we talked about Gabriel Kay, a young designer from De Montfort University, who has reimagined the kettle with Osiris, a fully repairable design aimed at reducing e-waste. Named after the Egyptian god of rebirth, this kettle symbolises sustainability and the future of repair-friendly design. Cornish artist Judy Joel's charming illustrations will be featured on Royal Mail's 2024 Christmas stamps, capturing iconic cathedrals across the UK in her unique, naive style. And the Glasgow School of Art has won the Ladislav Sutnar Prize, acknowledging its global impact on art and design education. The Spotlight shines on James Hughes from Folio Art, who shares insights on the future of illustration in a world of AI. While AI images are on the rise, James reassures illustrators that there's still demand for the warmth and nuance only human creativity can provide. He encourages illustrators to keep honing their skills to stand out in an evolving industry. Our Book of the Week takes us back to a classic: Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance by Robert M. Pirsig. Celebrating its 50th anniversary, this philosophical memoir prompts readers to reflect on the essence of "Quality" and the search for meaning, blending personal journey with profound insights—a must-read for anyone seeking deeper understanding. Our Tip of the Week offers advice for creative freelancers and studios: focus on building a strong reputation, emphasising unique strengths, and growing from within. Success comes from consistency, high standards, and a positive, professional presence. And finally, in our Letters to the Editor, there's a touching message from listener Nicky, who found comfort in Katy and Dave's reflections on resilience and life's silver linings. Don't miss next Monday's episode, in which Katy chats with Khyati Trehan, a talented graphic designer and 3D visual artist from New Delhi currently working at Google Creative Lab. They discuss balancing side projects, preventing burnout, and staying healthy while pursuing creative passions.

But when you try to say what the quality is, apart from the things that have it, it all goes poof! There's nothing to talk about. But if you can't say what Quality is, how do you know what it is, or how do you know that it even exists? If no one knows what it is, then for all practical purposes it doesn't exist at all. Neil connects his college experience to the book, describing the contrast between theoretical vs. applied learning. (5:35) Different learning styles, emphasizing hands-on experience, and the importance of practical understanding over theory.  (9:43) Why is it that not every great athlete can go on to become a great coach? It all comes down to being able to apply and share your knowledge in a given setting. (12:59) Sharing our thoughts on how the story was written, the narrative of the motorcycle trip, and how the sequel compares to this story. (18:43)The author opens the door to a variety of ideas such as learning to be in the present moment and how to focus on one thing at a time. Though Pirsig is intuitive across several domains, we find that he struggles to put these concepts into words.  (23:12) While on a trip with his son and another couple, the author reflects on flashbacks in his life, including the treatment of his past insanity. Through fixing the bike and traveling across the country, he learns many valuable lessons and philosophies along the way. (28:23) We briefly discuss the sequel where Pirsig highlights William James Sidis, known for his incredibly high IQ and profound ideas on the origin of life.  (32:43) Comparing bike riding to a full-body meditation. Each limb has a specific task to operate the bike, and you have to be focused on the road in front of you, truly bringing yourself to the present moment. (34:10) Nat, Neil, and Adil ponder the concept of Quality, its connection to science, spirituality, and the importance of peace of mind. Quality is all about applying yourself and your senses in the present moment, and being one with what you are doing. (40:54) Nat shares his perspective on the book's cognitive challenges and the reconciliation of theory and practice within the book. (45:18) One unique factor about this book is that it doesn't necessarily mean to give you a conclusive solution at the end. It's all about enjoying the journey, and being okay with the fact that you may not have arrived anywhere by the end of the book.  (48:53) Appreciating the book's humor, comical dialogues, and character depth, with a desire for more insight into the minds of the minor characters. (52:05) It can be very difficult to get started on any project, especially when you think of the whole scope of what you're about to do. If you can start with just one part, it becomes more manageable. We relate this idea to the book writing process. (1:04:37) What are gumption traps, and how can you avoid falling into them? Plus, we give some examples of common gumption traps that you may fall into that diminish your enthusiasm.  (1:11:47) That concludes this episode! Though people can choose where they want to listen, it's hard to get a sense of overall listening numbers across platforms as a whole. (2:49) Today's episode is centered around Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. Neil connects his college experience to the book, describing the contrast between theoretical vs. applied learning. (5:35) Different learning styles, emphasizing hands-on experience, and the importance of practical understanding over theory.  (10:34) Why is it that not every great athlete can go on to become a great coach? It all comes down to being able to apply and share your knowledge in a given setting. (13:50) Sharing our thoughts on how the story was written, the narrative of the motorcycle trip, and how the sequel compares to this story. (19:34)The author opens the door to a variety of ideas such as learning to be in the present moment and how to focus on one thing at a time. Though Pirsig is intuitive across several domains, we find that he struggles to put these concepts into words.  (24:03) While on a trip with his son and another couple, the author reflects on flashbacks in his life, including the treatment of his past insanity. Through fixing the bike and traveling across the country, he learns many valuable lessons and philosophies along the way. (29:14) We briefly discuss the sequel where Pirsig highlights William James Sidis, known for his incredibly high IQ and profound ideas on the origin of life.  (33:34) Comparing bike riding to a full-body meditation. Each limb has a specific task to operate the bike, and you have to be focused on the road in front of you, truly bringing yourself to the present moment. (35:01) Nat, Neil, and Adil ponder the concept of Quality, its connection to science, spirituality, and the importance of peace of mind. Quality is all about applying yourself and your senses in the present moment, and being one with what you are doing. (41:45) Nat shares his perspective on the book's cognitive challenges and the reconciliation of theory and practice within the book. (46:09) One unique factor about this book is that it doesn't necessarily mean to give you a conclusive solution at the end. It's all about enjoying the journey, and being okay with the fact that you may not have arrived anywhere by the end of the book.  (49:44) Appreciating the book's humor, comical dialogues, and character depth, with a desire for more insight into the minds of the minor characters. (52:56) It can be very difficult to get started on any project, especially when you think of the whole scope of what you're about to do. If you can start with just one part, it becomes more manageable. We relate this idea to the book writing process. (1:05:28) What are gumption traps, and how can you avoid falling into them? Plus, we give some examples of common gumption traps that you may fall into that diminish your enthusiasm.  (1:12:37) That concludes this episode! 20 YEARS IN PERSPECTIVE:I never intended to start a space rocket company.I started to literally Google “How do you build a moon rocket”Consulting has never been my kind of thing, you don't have enough responsibility I think in consulting for execution, I quite like the responsibility of execution.Rule 3 was “Don't fuck it up”.CEO role in that kind of company is 24 / 7 / 365.Stubbornness and stamina are really massively important in any entrepreneurial task.“You're really stubborn. You don't give up. You don't quit, you just keep pushing, keep pushing, until eventually something breaks in your favor and you get there.”The smallest mistake can result in mission failure.I think I kind of knew this intuitively, but someone should tell you explicitly you can do anything.I kind of see success as stepping stones in a way, you need to achieve this, to achieve that, to achieve the ultimate goal.ON TOPIC: OF SPACE, OBRITS, ROCKETS AND POTATO LAUNCHERSI do expect people to land on Mars while I'm still alive, assuming I survive another decade or so.Your mobile phone has something like a million times more computing power than, the Apollo that took people to the Moon.Q: “Could you do something like this?” A: “Yes, but have you got any money?”Orbex today, even with my biased rose-tinted sunglasses on, it is quite objectively viewed as the leading player in a new private space launch industry in Europe right now. Most of the applications of space technology are geared towards driving a better world on the surface of Planet Earth. And what that drives then is a lower economic cost to get things into space. And that's always been the real barrier to getting lots of things into space. To lift a kilo through the gravity well of Earth into orbit is very, very expensive. Once you're in orbit, it's relatively easy to get to other places, but getting into orbit is the expensive, difficult part of space access.I see the gap, the physical gap between Earth and Mars as being the equivalent of the Atlantic ocean, going back a few centuries.I think we're at the dawn of a really new chapter in human history, where we're not just talking about oceans and airplanes, we're talking about interplanetary things in a genuinely realistic way.Space is, I've learned, all about margins - safety margins, margins for performance, margins for mistakes and recovery of mistakes.Getting to orbit is a much, much harder problem than suborbital flight. The difficult part is achieving that velocity and it's a lot, it's tens of thousands of kilometres per hour to get to orbit.Imagine if every time you flew to New York from London you have to throw away the airplaneReusability, that's something we focus on at Orbex as well, reusability and environmental sustainability. The annual volume of Rocket Launches is the global equivalent of the entire airline traffic globally, it's a massive problem, because of that black soot that gets deposited by nonclean combustion of fossil fuels.References, mentions:UK Space Agency, European Space Agency, Orbex, Ariane 5, “Zen and the art of the motor motorcycle maintenance” by Robert M. The popular mantra, 'I am enough,' is actually an insult; it is disempowering. I get that it is a bridge in the self-development process because of the programming that people have received and they believe this lie but the analogy that I like to use is: If you went to a beautiful mountain lake and saw the most epic sunset of your entire life and you said, 'You are enough; yeah, that's enough'; what are you talking about? We are so much more than 'enough;' that is the understatement of the century. That belief has to change. - Tara Garrison Are You Stressed Out Lately? The reason is that they are committed to making the highest quality, clean products that are free from problematic ingredients. Their beef comes from 100% grass fed cows raised entirely on natural grass pastures by family farmers right here in the USA. As a result they are healthy and happy. PaleoValley's Pasture-Raised Turkey Sticks Paleovalley Pasture-Raised Turkey Sticks were created to make healthy snacking easier. Their turkey sticks are made from turkeys who are allowed to live as nature intended... on organic grass pastures with plenty of sunshine, fresh air and room to exercise. The result of raising turkeys in such a natural way is a much healthier, clean protein with higher levels of vitamins, minerals, and omega-3s. Unfortunately, virtually all turkey in the USA is conventionally raised with a small portion being "free range" – a virtually meaningless term that simply means the turkeys were allowed access to the outdoors. However, most "free range" turkeys only have access to an outdoor dirt field with no pasture in sight. Their truly pasture-raised turkeys are given full access to outdoor, pesticide-free pasture with plenty of grass and insects for them to nibble on. You don't even have to question that and the more you know that the more you will just be. A tree isn't sitting there wondering if it's worthy, it just is. Remember this when you catch yourself with a negative mindset about your body, work, or personal growth. When we see our worth; we feel it and when we resonate in it full of gratitude and truly see ourselves, that is actually creation energy. When you tap into that, you're no longer coming from a place of scarcity and trying to prove yourself to the world." -  Tara Garrison Why Are We Attracted to Food Camps? "We are so attracted to specific food camps because of our lack of self-development and people wanting to be led, taught, and get the Cliff notes of what is best. Then maybe they try that diet and they truly do feel better and it helps them. For example, If someone heals their SIBO with the carnivore diet, they are going to be feeling a lot better. But then if you have all of these respectable health professionals telling you all the reasons why this is THE best diet in the world for all humans, which a lot of it is for their monetary gain, you're not going to be really listening to yourself and what your own body needs. If all of that happens, you are setting yourself up to be in this very safe way of thinking." -  Tara Garrison Getting Back Into Powerful Alignment "When you are out of alignment, ask yourself, 'What is my fear?' Book suggested by Ashok Pande Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance by Robert M Pirsig You ready? For the sixth episode I interviewed my new friend Kelly, who just over a year ago started the company T's for Bees. Shortly after graduating college as a mechanical engineer, Kelly got burnt out in the corporate world and decided to pursue her passion for all things nature by starting her business that is dedicated to saving the declining bee population. The best part is that through her company, we get to help save the bees by purchasing her super cute tees that she designs herself. In this conversation, Kelly educates us on why the bees need our help and how we can make a difference. To view the full show notes, click on to read more or visit www.heartfelthippie.com When Kelly left her corporate job, she fully took advantage of owning her own business and decided to become a wanderer. She currently lives in Calgary, but she has lived in many places throughout Canada, America, and even eastern Asia. Being a nomad has helped Kelly to grow in her deep appreciation of mother earth as well as the ever-growing, global issue of endangered bees. Kelly describes how her company, T's for Bees, works and even describes how you (yes, you!) can become an ambassador and make a huge impact. The bulk of this episode centers around what is happening to the bees and why. The bee population is declining, and one of the major guilty parties is the agricultural industry, which Kelly explains in simple terms for those of us who know nothing about this topic. Kelly tells why this is the case and how we can change our ways to make sure this doesn't go on for any longer. Kelly shares six simple ways (plus two that I add on) that we can help the bees outside of financial contributions. You will be amazed at how easy these options are! In case you missed them, here are all the ways that you can help to save the bees: 1. Donate to bee-friendly organizations like Bee City 2. Buy a cute T's for Bees shirt 3. Don't weed your garden 4. Don't use pesticides on your lawn/garden 5. Plant bee-friendly/local plants and flowers 6. Buy local, organic honey 7. Leave water out for bees 8. Stay educated 9. Eat local, organic produce 10. Write your local representatives For more information on these, listen to the episode with Kelly or view my “Unofficial Resource Kit” on my website. Like I said, there are SO many easy ways that we can help our little bee friends. Kelly will explain why we need them in our lives and how huge of an impact these little guys have on our planet. I'm confident that she will win your heart over and you will absolutely want to be friends with her afterwards! If nothing else, you're going to want to see her gorgeous Instagram feed. It has ALL. THE. VIBES. Kelly's business has grown exponentially over the past year and she now has over 33,000 followers! Check it out and you'll see why. Some of the answers are obvious; others not so much. We will explore the gamut. The experts speak. Richard McCammon, Delego: “Is it hard? Not if you have the right attitudes. It's having the right attitudes that's hard” (Robert M. Pirsig, Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance). Hillel Zafir, HMS Technology Group: “There are risks and costs to a program of action—but they are far less than the long range cost of comfortable inaction” (John F. Kennedy). REFLECTION QUOTES “We are at the classic-romantic barrier now, where on one side we see a cycle as it appears immediately… and this is an important way of seeing it… and where on the other side we can begin to see it as a mechanic does in terms of underlying form… and this is an important way of seeing things too.” ~Robert M. Pirsig, American philosopher and novelist in Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance “Materialism is a conviction based not upon evidence or logic but upon what Carl Sagan…called a ‘deep-seated need to believe.' Considered purely as a rational philosophy, it has little to recommend it; but as an emotional sedative, what Czeslaw Milosz liked to call the opiate of unbelief, it offers a refuge from so many elaborate perplexities, so many arduous spiritual exertions, so many trying intellectual and moral problems, so many exhausting expressions of hope or fear, charity or remorse. In this sense it should be classified as one of those religions of consolation whose purpose is not to engage the mind or will with the mysteries of being but merely to provide a palliative for existential grievances and private disappointments. Popular atheism is not a philosophy but a therapy.” ~David Bentley Hart in The Experience of God “Christian theology can fit in science, art, morality…The scientific point of view cannot fit in any of these things, not even science itself. I believe in Christianity as I believe that the Sun has risen not only because I see it but because by it I see everything else.” ~C.S. Lewis (1898-1963) in “Is Theology Poetry?” “I am not ashamed to own that I believe that the whole universe, heaven and earth, air and seas, and the divine constitution and history of the holy Scriptures, be full of images of divine things, as full as a language is of words…there is room for persons to be learning more and more of this language and seeing more of that which is declared in it to the end of the world without discovering all.” ~Jonathan Edwards (1703-1758), famed American theologian “In the end, coming to faith remains for all a sense of homecoming…of responding to a bell that had long been ringing…” ~Malcolm Muggeridge (1903-1990), British journalist SERMON PASSAGE Acts 18:23-19:7 (NASB) 23 And having spent some time there, he left and passed successively through the Galatian region and Phrygia, strengthening all the disciples. 24 Now a Jew named Apollos, an Alexandrian by birth, an eloquent man, came to Ephesus; and he was mighty in the Scriptures. 25 This man had been instructed in the way of the Lord; and being fervent in spirit, he was speaking and teaching accurately the things concerning Jesus, being acquainted only with the baptism of John; 26 and he began to speak out boldly in the synagogue. But when Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they took him aside and explained to him the way of God more accurately. 27 And when he wanted to go across to Achaia, the brethren encouraged him and wrote to the disciples to welcome him; and when he had arrived, he greatly helped those who had believed through grace, 28 for he powerfully refuted the Jews in public, demonstrating by the Scriptures that Jesus was the Christ. Chapter 19 1 It happened that while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul passed through the upper country and came to Ephesus, and found some disciples. 2 He said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” And they said to him, “No, we have not even heard whether there is a Holy Spirit.” 3 And he said, “Into what then were you baptized?” And they said, “Into John's baptism.” 4 Paul said, “John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in Him who was coming after him, that is, in Jesus.” 5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 6 And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they began speaking with tongues and prophesying. 7 There were in all about twelve men.
