Thanks for dropping by the Three Things podcast. It's a tradition here to devote the episode after the Edmonton Folk Music Festival to the Edmonton Folk Music Festival. And, so, in keeping with podcast tradition, this week's three things are: 1. Tarps – a connection between the iconic look of Gallagher Hill and a library book reader I came across in line 2. Food – on site, off site, the story of two great meals 3. Darlingside – I lose my mind… The original music in the podcast is from Edmonton composer and pianist Brendan McGrath. The end bells are courtesy of Edmonton metals artist and humanitarian Slavo Cech. I am at glenn.kubish@gmail.com. See you on the hill!

This is a great talk through a fascinating career with a groundbreaking woman in media consulting and one of the most successful admakers in Democratic politics. IN THIS EPISODEAndi grows up in a politically-minded family in Eugene Oregon…A teenage Andi rubs shoulders with Senator Ted Kennedy and his 1980 presidential campaign staff…Andi remembers the politics of her native Oregon in her formative years…Andi's fortuitous intersection with two iconic media consultants, Roger Ailes and Joe Slade White…Andi talks the "two revolutions" in production of political media…Andi on what she learned from her early colleague Joe Slade White…Andi talks an early key race for (then Democrat) Ben Nighthorse Campbell in Colorado…Andi distills her approach to admaking…Andi talks one of her favorite ads for VT Senator Pat Leahy…Andi breaks down the appeal of two of the most memorable ads she produced for the Obama 2008 Presidential…Three Bedroom Ranch and Rearview Mirror…Andi's memories working for the Klobuchar 2020 presidential campaign…Andi talks the recent success of her client Cherelle Parker, the next mayor of Philadelphia…Andi recalls a groundbreaking ad she helped write in 1998 for then Congressman Jay Inslee…Andi talks what she learned from longtime partner Saul Shorr…Andi discloses her strangest work habit and her advice to budding media consultants…Andi goes deep on her experiences as a traiblazing woman in political media & how the business has changed on that front over the past generation... Thanks for dropping by the podcast. It was tough this week to watch former colleagues get the axe from Bell. I admired Tom Walters, especially. Great writer, great newsman, went where the story asked him to go, always willing to confront Pocklington with a unexpected question. Just want to put that on the record, as they used to say. Back now to regularly scheduled podcasting, and three things that left behind, in my little life, tracks of happiness and gratitude. 1. Strong ads – I admire good ads. Like IKEA's latest pics. 2. Squeak – I was stuck in a traffic circle. Darlingside kept it real. 3. Cats – I come to terms with our sons having become cat people. Almost. Learn more: https://mountainstage.org/event/darlingside/ #3 – From WV Explorer – America's quintessential Atomic Age monster, Mothman continues to attract attention in the Ohio Valley, so much so that more than 25,000 visitors attended the annual Mothman Festival in 2022, and far more are expected at the three-day 2023 event in September. As much as people might know or suspect about the legendary beast, which made its first recorded appearance in 1966, three critical details about its alleged history and habitation are not always considered, says Denny Bellamy, director of the Mason County Convention and Visitors Bureau. For instance, did you know the first Mothman sighting occurred in Clendenin? Reports of a flying humanoid came first along the Elk River near the Elk River Trail. “I don't know why it migrated [to Point Pleasant], but I suppose it had something to do with the ordnance factory. Something must have been going on there, and something must still be going on,” Bellamy said. Read on for more interesting facts about Mothman, and plan a trip to the Mothman Museum to learn more. Janet Varney is an Emmy-Nominated actor, comedian, writer and producer. In the animation world, she is lucky enough to be the award-winning voice of Korra on Nickelodeon's critically-acclaimed standout hit “The Legend of Korra,” a role for which she continues to be invited to comic cons to give sweaty handshakes the world over. She can also be seen as the entitled and bitchy Becca on FX's (via hulu) “You're the Worst” (named as one of the last decade's best comedies), and fighting dark forces alongside John C. McGinley as Evie Barrett on IFC's (via hulu) “Stan Against Evil.” Her own podcast on the Max Fun network, The JV Club with Janet Varney, has been going since 2012 and features almost 400 interviews with celebrities about their awkward teenage years. She co-programs comedy for Outside Lands music festival and is co-founder/creative director/producer of one of the largest and most acclaimed comedy festivals in North America, SF Sketchfest: the San Francisco Comedy Festival, now in its 20th year. http://janetvarney.com/ Episode co-hosts: FRANCES LUKE ACCORD When Nicholas Gunty and Brian Powers put their songs and their voices together, there is a delicate magic that commands the room to attention. The duo is known as Frances Luke Accord, and they are what NPR's Mountain Stage calls “the definition of lean-in music.” Their soft, contemplative vintage of indie-folk gestures toward a timelessness that honors the Simon & Garfunkel comparisons but pushes beyond into the world of Bon Iver, Jose Gonzalez, and progressive folk music. Both raised in South Bend, IN, Gunty and Powers met and began performing together during their time at the University of Notre Dame. Their first release, 'Kandote', was an intercultural collaboration with the Barefoot Truth Children's Choir in Uganda, a not-for-profit effort which provides ongoing support to the choir to this day. Relocating to Chicago in 2013, the duo honed their songwriting craft while releasing two more self-produced EPs, laying the groundwork for their breakthrough debut LP, 'Fluke'. This immersive, philosophically rich album set them off on their first national tour, which included support dates with Anais Mitchell, Darlingside, and The Ballroom Thieves. The duo's 2021 release, the Sunnyside EP, offers a glimpse into the larger body of work Frances Luke Accord have been developing over the course of the pandemic. More to come soon. https://franceslukeaccord.com/ LYRICS to Afterlife: As long as you're by my side I will make you dinner in the afterlife Live in our after world Stringing jewellery of gold and pearl Some bonds don't break I come to nourish you with my hands Make you a sculpture in the sand Hands that work, hands that tire We form the shape but the shape expires You know I worked for all these years Trying my hardest at my life career We've been witness to joy and pain But the world we left was the world we gained We're so different you and I In a way we never saw eye to eye Despite the loss that set me free In a way you're maybe still guiding me Some bonds don't break We all need shape As long as you're by my side Will you make me laugh in the afterlife? This week, we bring you an intimate conversation with avant-folk instrumentalists and songwriting team Martin Earley (guitar, vocals) and Callie Peters (cello-vocals) - the driving forces behind New England's The Ballroom Thieves. Beginning as a hard-traveling duo, also featuring longtime percussionist Devin Mauch, over a decade ago at Stonehill College in Massachusetts, the band began to turn heads and fill rooms when they added Peters and her fierce and poetic singing-style around eight years back. The Queen-meets-Wings stacks of harmonies, gorgeous string arrangements and slam-poetry off-kilter lyrics instantly made them stick out from their gentler rootsy peers. They recorded the beloved harmony-drenched debut A Wolf In The Doorway in 2015 and followed up with their soulful, expansively electric Nettwerk debut Deadeye, which has been streamed over 50 million times and counting. A tasteful covers record followed as they established themselves as international festival favorites. 2020 was supposed to be a triumphant year for the group, but of course that's not how anything went last year, for anybody. Their playfully experimental and fearlessly political release Unlovely (your host Z. Lupetin's new favorite record of this fractious era) got buried in the late winter tumult of the new pandemic, forcing the group to call off all touring and shelving all promotion. Holed up at home, the chastened group hoped the world might discover the deliciously angular anthems like “Vanity Trip," “Homme Run” and the epic tempo-jumping opening title track (featuring fellow New England harmony-masters Darlingside) at a later, calmer date. The world has not gotten calmer of course. Earley and Peters had to push off marrying each other and percussionist Devin Mauch had to make the tough decision to leave the group and focus on his art career after a decade sharing stages across the world with his friends. Despite all this, our talk was an upbeat one. The group recently returned to performing live and sold out their hometown venue the Sinclair in Boston with an expanded group of musicians backing their ever-evolving sound. New music is on the way - but in the meantime, give yourself a day to sit with Unlovely: one of the true lost gems of the 2020 musical year.

Season 1, Episode 0010Finger Lakes Viticulture – June 10, 2021There is no denying it, the growing season is going strong so far. With warm temperatures, and adequate, but not excessive precipitation, I’m feeling good about 2021.I’m also feeling great about this podcast, and the many projects going on at our winery. We are gaining hundreds of new listeners, without any real advertisement so far. Word of mouth seems to be spreading, and I am receiving some great feedback. As a reminder, the best way to help the show grow is to rate the show with 5 stars in Apple podcasts, and like our YouTube broadcast videos - and tell a friend. At Missick Cellars (www.MissickCellars.com), I’m proud to announce that we have now opened the Art Gallery at our Dundee location. The ethos of this show, of sharing stories from others, of expanding our world view in terms of art, philosophy, entrepreneurship, and music, and of working diligently so that we can live our best life, have come into fruition in my own business. In pairing up with Pittsford Fine Art (https://www.pittsfordfineart.com/) in Pittsford, New York, we have been able to work with an artist owned co-op art gallery, of regionally and nationally recognized fine art artists, to elevate the experience we offer at the winery, and promote the idea of cultivating our own lives around the beauty that we get to experience in this world every day. I’m grateful to Pittsford Fina Arts, and incredibly proud to share the artwork of these really talented individuals. If you are interested, you can take a look at a video we released taking you through the new gallery, that link can be found right here, and is on the YouTube channel for the winery. As far as vineyard development, as of June 8, we currently stand at 507.6 growing degree days. As of June 8, in 2020 were at 429.4, in 2019 we were at 404.6, and in a warm vintage like 2016, we were at 438. We are lagging behind 2018, which had seen a growing degree day accumulation of 568, but we have not seen the level of precipitation that we saw in 2018 - at least not yet, fingers crossed. Many of the native grapes, grape like Concord which we don’t make wine from but grow for jelly and eating, have gone or are going through bloom. Our vinifera blocks of Chenin Blanc, Cabernet Franc and Riesling, are poised for bloom, with cane and canopy growth going strong. It is at this point most growers will apply a pre-bloom spray regimen in their vineyards. This is an important time to spray for some common vineyard problems, such as powdery mildew, downy mildew, and black rot. The sprays made immediately pre-bloom, and until about a month after bloom, are crucial in our efforts to ensure sound and strong fruit, and a quality crop for the year. Fungicides are crucial in this period, making the next month one of the key “make it or break it” periods of the growing season. Pre-bloom nutrient sprays may be important as well. Although the physiology between grapes and tomatoes may seem quite different, this is a common time of year to make sure all of our tomatoes have an adequate supply of calcium to ensure problems like blossom end rot do not plague us in the next few months. Grapes and grape vines also need adequate nutrition, and so depending on where you are located, and the specifics of your site, this may be a consideration for your vineyard as well.I do love this time of year. Daisy’s fill the middle rows with large bouquets of white and yellow. The birds chorus and the rustling of the leaves provide nature’s symphony in the vineyard. The time for rest has clearly past, the time for diligence and hard work is here and urgent. In the coming week, we are anticipating slightly cooler temperatures, with highs in the 70’s. So far though, this has been a great spring. The precipitation of May and June so far has been scattered. Only a few thunderstorms have dropped significant rains, most of the time it has been short and gentle showers. I did have some concern over the high temperatures and amount of rain the last few days. With that, came higher dewpoints and humidity, which can promote the spread of disease. With the moderating temperatures, and moderate rains in the forecast however, the year is starting to show promise. Be sure to tune in next week, where I speak with Auyon Mukharji, one of the talented signers and violinist in the outstanding indie music outfit, Darlingside. Darlingside, with its amazing vocal harmonies, literary lyrics, and sweeping instrumentation, capture the modern sound of philosophy embodied in music. Their sound is often the soundtrack to my cellar work, and their music my accompaniment to winemaking. Their music offers me a sense of the elevated, the inspirational, and it inspires my work in many ways. Episode 188 - Ben Cosgrove. Dan Sterenchuk and Tommy Estlund are honored to have as our guest, Ben Cosgrove. In the spring of 2021, landscape-inspired composer and traveling pianist Ben Cosgrove released The Trouble With Wilderness, a lush, textured, and expansive set of twelve new songs that consider the role of nature and wildness in the built environment. “I found I was spending a lot of time on stage talking about national parks and oceans and wilderness areas, and not enough about the places that people are more likely to encounter in their everyday lives,” explains Cosgrove, whose career has included artist residencies and collaborations with Acadia and Isle Royale National Parks, White Mountain National Forest, the Schmidt Ocean Institute, the Sitka Center for Art and Ecology, and the New England National Scenic Trail, as well as solo performances in 48 states. He assigned himself the challenge of writing a set of songs that would allow him to correct this oversight, and quickly found the decision to be eerily well-timed: almost immediately after he began writing and recording demos, the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic would force virtually everyone on the planet both to find a new appreciation for the world just outside their front door and to reconsider the impermeability of whatever boundary they might have imagined to exist between the natural world and the human one. It also put Cosgrove, a musician who has traveled constantly for over a decade, in the unusual and terrifying position of having to sit still. “It really made me kind of have to walk the walk, in terms of the ideas I was trying to illustrate with this new music. Instead of driving eight hours to someplace new each morning, I was going on these daylong rambles all over the outskirts of town pretty much every day for months. I was amazed to find what strange, beautiful, and interesting things I noticed as I passed all the same ordinary-seeming places again and again and looked at them more and more closely.” The production by indie-folk maestro Dan Cardinal (Josh Ritter, Darlingside, Lula Wiles, Session Americana, The Ballroom Thieves) both emphasizes the physicality of the instruments involved and elevates the sounds to places that are uncannily gorgeous and sometimes almost surreal. The result is an uncommonly beautiful set of songs and a massive step forward in Cosgrove's idiosyncratic and increasingly mature body of work. Like the vernacular landscapes he looked to in composing it, the music on The Trouble With Wilderness sits on the narrow balancing point between order and wildness and manages to lean simultaneously into both. My guests today are Donald Mitchell and Peter Katis. Donald plays vocals, guitar, banjo with the band Darlingside who have just finished their newest record Fish Pond Fish and Peter is a producer and engineer at Tarquin Studios, a 7,000 square foot Victorian home in Bridgeport, Connecticut that has been transformed into a residence and recording studio for musicians. Fish Pond Fish is an album that brings together acoustic folk instruments with the cool band sounds of indie rock under a lush bed of vocal harmonies described as a story of geology, meteorology, ornithology, astronomy and botany. An album that catalogues the weird nooks of our world with the same curiosity of a botanist’s time-worn field journal. Peter’s many credits include: Death Cab For Cutie, Frightened Rabbit, Gang of Youths, Interpol, The National, The Head And The Heart, and Kurt Vile. And In 2017, Katis and Chris Frantz of Talking Heads launched a concert series for emerging artists at The Fairfield Theater Company Thanks to Martina at Music Marcom for making our introduction. This week on the Seed Cast we met with musician Harris Paseltiner of Darlingside. Currently based in Boston, MA, Harris exhibits his talents on cello, guitar, and vocals in this harmonious group of four musicians. Described by NPR as, “exquisitely-arranged, literary-minded, baroque folk-pop,” Darlingside just celebrated their 10th anniversary as a group this past year with the full-length album release of Fish Pond Fish. In this episode, Harris gives some beautiful insight into how he thinks musically, addressing both the emotional and technical stages. We discussed his textural synesthesia, the writing process of the most recent Darlingside record, and how the pandemic has left an imprint on the final result. You can stay up to date on Darlingside's latest happenings at http://www.darlingside.com/ and you can follow them on instagram @darlingside. Harris's Artist picks: Andrew Benincasa, Ben Cosgrove, and Úlfur Hansson.
Auyon Mukharji, of the Massachusetts spacey-folk band Darlingside, grew up in Kansas with first generation immigrant parents. Nature, music and sports all played a big role in his formative years. He ended up studying biology at Williams College, where he met his future bandmates in Darlingside. He joined an a capella group with members of the band and that allowed the guys to formulate their freaky harmony connection that is so well on display in the band's recordings and shows. Auyon talks about finally connecting with singing through songwriting, overcoming chronic pain in his 20's and how friendship and humor play an important role in the band.Rhythm plays a big role in the new album Fish Pond Fish and in our conversation, Auyon explains that intentionality. As per usual, nature shows up a lot in the songwriting, which is split evenly among the members of the band. He says “It's like you're searching through three-fourths of foreign consciousness. Bringing you to a place you couldn't imagine. You move beyond yourself.” He goes on to talk about what it's like to be so close to other people's consciousness in that kind of intense environment. Enjoy Auyon! He is a first class gem. Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands
In this episode we talk with Dave Senft and Harris Paseltiner, who, along with Don Mitchell and Auyon Mukharji, make up the Massachusetts based band Darlingside. The band recently released their fourth full length album Fish Pond Fish. We talk about how this album’s creation took some different paths than Darlingside’s previous work, some of which were planned (different approaches to group song writing) and some not so planned (the album had to be mixed and finished during quarantine). The band’s highly entertaining approach to live performance is also discussed. Also covered: knee slapping, pecking pigeons, and enthusiastic washing machines.

It’s a hypnotic song in its own right, but there’s a story attached, and I encourage you to follow the link in the show notes to Diving Rod’s website for an explanation in his own words. “What do you do after your band has toured the world several times over? Break up and head back home.” That’s just what Hawaiian born, Brooklynite Miyuki Furtado did after a show in Oslo, Norway when he exited The Rogers Sisters (Too Pure/Beggars Group), the much touted NY trio in which he sang, played bass and wrote many of their winning songs. A few weeks ago, I talked with Bethany Rydmark; she’s the one who started the PDX Food Swap in Portland. After we chatted, I also asked her about what’s saving her life right now. This is a thing we do here on the pod every now and then; this idea is taken from Barbara Brown Taylor, a writer who, in her book, An Altar in the World, she talks about how easy it is to focus on the things that are making everything harder, and that instead, we need to remember to look around and notice: what are the little things that are making everything a bit better? Bethany shares a few things she's loving right now. I hope you enjoy this short chat, because down the road, we’ll be doing more of these — I might ask a favorite guest from our work episodes to come back on, or another friend or co-host you love hearing from — or even some of you lovely patrons! After my chat with Bethany, I’m sharing a little something I’ve got available for you right now that’s only open right now, so hang on to the end for that. I think you’ll really like it. Season 3, Episode 57 - Caitlin Canty Dan Sterenchuk and Tommy Estlund are honored to have as our guest, Caitlin Canty. Caitlin Canty is an American singer/songwriter whose music carves a line through folk, blues, and country ballads. Her voice was called “casually devastating” by the San Francisco Chronicle and NPR describes her songs as having a “haunting urgency.” Motel Bouquet, Canty's third record, features ten original songs that hold her darkly radiant voice firmly in the spotlight. Produced by Grammy-nominated Noam Pikelny (Punch Brothers) and recorded live over three days in Nashville, the album boasts a band of some of finest musicians in roots music, including fiddler Stuart Duncan and vocalist Aoife O'Donovan. Rolling Stone hails Motel Bouquet as “dreamy and daring” with “poetic lyrics and haunting melodies.” Since the release of her critically-acclaimed Reckless Skyline in 2015, Canty has put thousands of miles on her songs, circling through the U.S. and Europe. She warmed up stages for The Milk Carton Kids and Gregory Alan Isakov and recorded with longtime collaborators Darlingside and with Down Like Silver, her duo with Peter Bradley Adams. She won the Troubadour songwriting competition at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival, and her song, “Get Up,” was nominated for Song of the Year in the Folk Alliance International Music Awards. Canty's original recordings have recently appeared on CBS's Code Black and on the Netflix original series House of Cards. Raised in small-town Vermont, the daughter of a school teacher and a house painter, Canty earned her degree in biology in the Berkshires and subsequently moved to New York City. She spent her days in the city working as an environmental sustainability consultant and her nights making music at Lower East Side music halls and bars. In 2009, she quit her job and set out to make music full time. In 2015, she packed up her house plants and her 1939 Recording King guitar and drove to Nashville, TN, which she now calls home. We kick this week's show off with the first single from the album, the polyrhythmic, party-pop song "Everybody's Coming To My House."Also on the program: NPR Music's Tom Huizenga stops by to share the mind-bending, genre-defying sounds of pianist Nils Frahm; Sylvan Esso takes an upbeat, carefree look at the end of the world; and the Boston-based band Darlingside reflects on childhood and lost youth with a beautiful and affecting new song called "Old Friend."All that plus the bent sounds of former Supergrass frontman Gaz Coombes, idiosyncratic pop from Trace Mountains (a side-project from Dave Benton of the band LVL UP) and the pulsing ambient sounds of German composer Niklas Paschburg.Full Playlist: 1. David Byrne: "Everybody's Coming To My House," 2. Sylvan Esso: "PARAD(w/m)E," 3. Gaz Coombes: "World's Strongest Man," 4. Trace Mountains: "Turn Twice," 5. Nils Frahm: "Momentum," 6. Niklas Paschburg: "Spark," 7. Darlingside: "Old Friend"

JACK SEMPLE is one of those rare guitar players who leaves a crowd speechless. WoodSongs fans of Tommy Emmanuel take note. This guitar virtuoso from Regina, Saskatchewan writes and performs "Modern Blues" without forgetting where he came from. He is an epic guitarist and a soulful singer. His music is like Stevie Ray Vaughn meets James Brown meets Robben Ford. He is a Juno Award winner and Western Canadian Music Award winner. He has contributed to television and music scores and appeared in the title role of TV movie appropriately called 'Guitarman'. He has a brand new CD called 'In the Blue Light'. DARLINGSIDE are a Massachusetts-based ensemble whose sound is an eclectic blend of 60s folk, clever wry wit, classical arrangements, soaring harmonies, and a modern indie-rock sensibility. The four vocalists and multi-instrumentalists construct every piece collaboratively, pooling ideas so that each song bears the imprint of four different writing voices. Playful vocal permutations swing from four-part unison to CSNY-inspired group harmonies, underpinned by rich, carefully crafted soundscapes. The band's new album 'Birds Say' is out now. A curated preview of everything you'll hear this November on Mountain Stage, hosted by assistant producer Joni Deutsch. Featuring songs from Sonny Landreth, Sam Bush, Kate Miller-Heidke, Blitzen Trapper, Bela Fleck & Abigail Washburn, Jason Isbell & the 400 Unit and Darlingside.
With a quartet of distinct voices clustered around a single microphone, Darlingside effortlessly draw audiences into their lush, dynamic musical world. The band’s sound, characterized by classical strings, tight vocal arrangements, bluegrass and rock instrumentation, and smart lyricism, is the product of complete collaboration among the four close friends. The group has no frontman; instead, lead vocals are traded from moment to moment, and each song features a new combination of instruments and textures, pulling heavily from folk, retro-pop, barbershop, and chamber music. Dave (bassist and former street musician), Don (guitarist, banjoist, and former boy alto), Auyon (classical violinist who studied mandolin in Ireland and Brazil) and Harris (classical cellist and guitarist) met and sang together as students at Williams College. Together, they are “a powerhouse of vocal, instrumental, and performing talent,” and their expansive sound is “astonishingly more congruent than the sum of its parts.” Darlingside’s collaborative work with fellow Massachusetts-native Heather Maloney, which culminated in the 2014 Signature Sounds release “Woodstock,” garnered attention from both The New York Times and The Boston Globe. This summer, the band will step onto the national stage with appearances at High Sierra in Quincy, CA, Sisters Folk Festival in Sisters, OR, and ...
