Globally-traveled and well-respected rapper/Ivy League scholar Malik Starx’s artistry highlights music’s ability to motivate discourse, inspire research, and promote joy. His vocal talent is also present in the classroom, as he is also an Assistant Professor in the Department of Cognitive, Linguistic, and Psychological Sciences (CLPS) at Brown University. Moreover, he counts undergraduate work at Howard University, receiving a Master’s degree from Columbia University, and Doctorate from the University of California-Berkeley in his academic success. Previous to achieving his educational exploits, Starx’s success allowed him to tour alongside the likes of noted folk artist Justin Trawick, plus perform with artists including EDM entrepreneur and electro producer Tittsworth and global dance music icon Dave Nada. Currently, Starx has joined forces with producer Stephon Alexander, a theoretical physics professor at Brown University. The results include jazzy, Afro-Caribbean styled-single “Dancing for Freedom,” alongside Sierre Leoneon vocalist Kanjia. Kali Uchis spiller også på årets Roskilde Festival.Du kender måske reggaeton? Det er en blanding mellem reggae og hip-hop, der har en meget bestemt og genkendelig rytme. Men reggaeton er ikke bare rytmer og rim. Det er også en indlejret politisk og kropslig modstand indlejret i musikken, som i mange år var forbudt i Puerto Rico, fordi det blev opfattet som blufærdighedskrænkende. Ligesom den amerikanske hip-hop har reggaeton været en kanal, hvor kunstnere har kunnet udtrykke sig politisk og bringe stemmer fra undergrunden frem. Du kan høre et godt eksempel på hvad reggaeton kan på nummeret med det puertoricanske band Calle 13.En udvikling af reggaeton rytmen er moombahton, som gennem holdet fra Mad Decent og Major Lazer er blevet meget internationalt anerkendt. DJ’en Dave Nada fandt i 2009 på at blande rytmen vi kender fra reggaeton med tung bas og dramatiske opbygninger, som vi kender fra techno. Og så lyder det sådan her:Genrerne reggaeton og moombahton bliver også dyrket i Danmark af en interessant duo: Mambe & Danochilango.Den colombianske sangerinde Mambe synger både på svensk, dansk, spansk og engelsk, mens den tidligere balletdanser på Det Kongelige Teater Danochilango overfører sin lyst og fornemmelse for bevægelse til producerstolen, hvor han forsøger at smitte publikum med sin musik.Mambe og Danochilango har samme politiske engagement og bevidsthed, som vi hørte hos Calle 13 tidligere. De har spillet med store internationale navne som Bomba Estereo og Dengue Dengue Dengue og i 2018 udkommer der et nyt album. Back in the fall of '08, Dave Nada dropped a mix for MDWWR titled "Love In This Bmore Club", highlighting the softer side of what was at the time, the driving force in club music. Bmore club was every DJ's best friend, allowing you to transition into anything from Nu Metal to new wave at the drop of a hat. 6 Years and a million soundcloud bootlegs later, Jersey club kids along with some help from a few talented Norwegians, are carrying the flag for a new generation, creating hyper club friendly renditions of everything from Bill Withers to Bobby Smurda. We thought it would be rad to have Dave Nada return, this time bringing along his party-starting wife Jen Lasher, for another round of sexy time jams highlighting the best Jersey club has to offer.

This week we are joined by DJ Ayres, co-owner of T&A Records and co-founder of The Rub, one of the longest running and arguably best dance parties in New York City. We talk about his start in Mississippi, the mid-nineties music scene in New York, building with Mark Ronson, Darshan Jesrani (Metro Area), and Dan Bayless (Escort) in college and how that influenced his career. Plus: How The Rub was started and the art of 'going in' and bringing the heat as a DJ, developing an audience and engaging the crowd, linking up with Turntable Lab and creating a movement. We also discuss the start of T&A Records and the origins of Moombaton (shouts to Dave Nada!), building a roster and making moves as a DJ-run label, ghost producers and EDM music, and why he started the Small Talk podcast.
