Catalyst is a Creative Industries podcast, from Chapman University. Each episode features Chapman students who have completed a Podcasting course through the Center for Creative and Cultural Industries at the university. Students who had no podcasting experience or technical ability in the genre before taking the course were able to contribute all the segments to Catalyst this season with the goal being that they will take this ‘hands-on' experience and carry it over to the launching of their very own series. Each episode of Season 11 will feature one to two different interviews conducted by CCI students, exploring different aspects of the Creative and Cultural Industries. This week Rockie Rosenberg kicks off the episode with an interview of Nocona Burgess, a Native American indigenous artist and member of the Comanche Nation who now resides in Santa Fe. As the son of a former tribal chief and the great-great-grandson of one of the most revered Native American leaders, Chief Quanah Parker, his work presents strikingly modern depictions of Indigenous men and women from various tribal Nations of North America. Through the interview the pair discuss how Nocona has a great overview of the business side of art due to his extensive experience in navigating the art world at a young age. They also touch on Burgess' podcast experience and the classes he teaches at the Institute of American Indian Art (IAIA) which deal with the business side of art. In our second interview, Jared Serios sits down with Lyn Sazon to talk about Serios' career as an artist who works in the mediums of digital and traditional art. Serios divulges how he started down the path of his artistic journey, including his early years and accomplishments, and talks about how the art he creates reflects his strong roots and cultural background. Sazon questions Serios about his creative process, and how he developed his unique style of artmaking. The two conclude the interview with a look at some of the artists that Serios admires, and what plans he has for the near future of his career.

Growing up in Des Moines, IA, Bianca Flores was always fascinated by science and thinking about how it could be applied to the real world. That same curiosity would eventually lead her to pursue a PhD studying neuroscience at Vanderbilt University, offering her a window into how memories are formed and how connections between people are made. Her research continued at John Hopkins University, where she completed a doctoral fellowship. Throughout her time in academia, Bianca was often keenly aware that she was one of the only Latina in her social and professional circles. As a result, she found herself drawn to groups like SACNAS (Society for Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science) and the NIH-IMSD (National Institutes of Health funded Initiative for Maximizing Student Development). Thanks to groups like these, she was able to discover the undeniable power of community and connection, bringing her research full circle. In hopes of sharing that same empowerment and understanding with others, Bianca is developing a start-up that aims to create community by connecting young Latine professionals through networking opportunities, dating and supporting local businesses. When she's not building community and reading about neural pathways, you can find Bianca trying new restaurants, seeing live music, and spoiling all three of her canine companions/children. There is something magical about combining ingredients to make a delicious plate. It's like creating a work of art with every meal. And, just like an artist, you can use different seasonings to create different flavors. For me though, the magic comes from watching others add a healthy dash of pepper, a muscle-memory pinch of salt, or blind handful of oregano to make magical plates. To watch others do it with a mental measuring spoon and be confident the food will come out mouthwatering. How do you describe that magic? How do you tell others about it in a way that makes their minds wonder there is both magic and method behind that? What is the magic behind that? Is it experience? Is it national origin? Is it gender? Is it regional? There is such a word, in Spanish, to describe that magical method. Its literal translation is Seasoning, which is SAZON. But Sazon has a more powerful meaning in our culture than just seasoning. Some may say that SAZON comes with a punch. Others may describe SAZON as a zing. It is the flavor that takes your taste buds on a journey. A journey they will never forget. Sazon is an emotional journey that involves chemistry, artistry and mental calculation within our hands.

We start the second season with a good friend and mompreneur, Cy Sazon, who shares her postpartum depression/experience after her most recent pregnancy in 2020 during the COVID19 pandemic. She recalls reaching the point of being unable to look at herself in the mirror and feeling “disgusted.” But all it took was an inner shift (and of course, huge support from her husband and family) to choose a positive mindset telling herself that “her kids deserved a happy, strong mom.” Having identified at an early age that being a good mother and wife was how she wanted to be remembered and already a dream in itself, this urged her to get up in the morning and dedicate time for herself, to commit to being her best self one day at a time. She advises to listen to our bodies - what to eat, when to rest - and to be more intentional with what we do. Most importantly, she emphasizes how it's definitely okay for us to ask for help and never to be ashamed or afraid of it.
