La bachata y el racismo, Tokischa y la falta de representación en la industria latina, el pop por fin apuesta por lo experimental, el indie y el reggaeton casi se juntan y muchos más temas candentes en "Latinx Hive Mind 2021". Por tercer año consecutivo en LATINXTRANSFER, tengo el placer de juntar a ilustres "perreodistas" que escriben sobre música y tendencias latinxs alrededor del mundo para hacer un recuento de lo mejor y lo peor y what's next en la música latina. Una mesa redonda con Katelina "Gata" Eccleston, ('Paper', 'Loud' podcast), Verónica Bayetti Flores ('Radio Menea' podcast, Remezcla), Richard Villegas ('Songmess' podcast, Bandcamp) y Zoila Antonio Benito (La Antígona, Sounds and Colours).

Es la revancha de los nenes indie de Soundcloud: Bad Bunny, Rauw Alejandro, PJ Sin Suela, Myke Towers….todos empezaron como underdogs del reggaeton y el hip hop en Puerto Rico y ahora son parte de la generación que domina el movimiento. Alvaro Díaz es una de las figuras más sobresalientes de esta ola, y quien se ha distinguido por sus raps emos y vulnerables y su ingenioso uso del “palabreo” boricua sin complejos. Su más reciente disco se titula 'Felicilandia' e incluye colaboraciones con grandes como Randy, el propio Rauw, referencias del rock y punk isleño como Buscabulla y AJ Dávila, así como de sus productores de siempre, Tainy, Caleb Calloway, Orteez, entre otros. Como ya es característico en las producciones de Alvaro Díaz, hay sampleos de reggaeton clásico así como de canciones de los 80s, R&B, funk, y notas de voz de su mamá.

“Ask me where I'm going, don't ask me where I'm from” nos dice la cantautora vanguardista Xenia Rubinos, y si lo pusiéramos en práctica, quizás nos entenderíamos mejor como seres humanos. En este episodio de LATINXTRANSFER, una charla con Xenia sobre su nuevo disco, “Una Rosa”, creado durante una fuerte crisis creativa que la llevó, como nos cuenta, a quemarse como el ave fénix y renacer. A improvisar en el estudio. A dejar de repensar todo. Y volver a encontrar su voz. Xenia creció en Connecticut de madre puertorriqueña y padre cubano y lleva años en la escena musical independiente en Brooklyn. Desde sus comienzos, Xenia se ha dejado sentir: ella no es simplemente una artista “latina” o una artista “indie”, es ella con sus complejidades, como todos. Y eso no siempre sienta bien. Lo refleja en temas como “I Did My Best” o “Don't Put Me in Red” en este nuevo trabajo, el cual es menos jazz y más electrónico y latino.

Para celebrar el lanzamiento de su nuevo disco, Liliana 'Li' Saumet, la frontwoman de Bomba Estéreo, lideró una meditación guiada por Instagram. Para arrancar la cuarta temporada de LATINXTRANSFER, hablé con Li sobre este nuevo disco, ‘Deja', el existencialismo, esta nueva etapa de la banda, la meditación y hasta Daft Punk. En ‘Deja', Li y Simón Mejía, junto a Lido Pimienta y otros colaboradores, han plasmado lo mejor de Bomba Estéreo de los pasados 15 años - canciones bailables, fusiones equilibradas entre lo folklórico y lo electrónico, letras reflexivas e inspiracionales - con un toque de espiritualidad e intención. Usando los 4 elementos - agua, aire, tierra, fuego - como base conceptual, Bomba Estéreo nos invita a desconectar de lo superfluo para conectar con la naturaleza, con los demás y nosotros mismos. Después de terminar una gira por España con una tocada en Razzmatazz en 2019, Sergio Acosta y León Larregui del grupo Zoé tomaron la decisión de dejar la Ciudad de México y mudarse a Barcelona. Aquí han pasado la pandemia y parte del marinaje de su más reciente disco, ‘Sonidos de Karmática Resonancia'. En esta edición de LATINXTRANSFER, Nuria Net vuelve al estudio de Radio Primavera Sound en Barcelona para charlar con Sergio, guitarrista de Zoé, sobre la ansiedad de volver a tocar en vivo después de tanto tiempo, su trabajo como productor y cabeza del sello Discos Panoram y lo difícil que es hacer el crossover entre España y América Latina, aún para una de las bandas más consolidadas de México y con casi 25 años de trayectoria.

Natalia Lafourcade es minuciosa en todo lo que hace. Siempre pone alma y corazón. Tras ganarse un Latin Grammy y un Grammy por el primer volumen, ahora presenta “Un Canto por México Vol. 2”, una colección de temas tradicionales - boleros, rancheras - de su país, México, pero también de Latinoamérica. Además, versiona temas de su propio repertorio convirtiéndolos en nuevos clásicos. Lo hace con la participación de artistas como Rubén Blades, Caetano Veloso y Silvana Estrada y más de 50 músicos. En esta obra, Natalia Lafourcade acerca el pasado con el futuro, reivindica lo suyo, lo hace relevante y con un propósito altruista: recaudar fondos para el Centro de Documentación del Son Jarocho en Veracruz. Es música que no tiene nada que ver con las tendencias pero todo que ver con lo eterno; y ella logra hacerlo nuevo y llegarle a la gente. Natalia Lafourcade ha alcanzando el estatus de Young Legend en mi panteón LATINXTRANSFER y cuyo spirit animal bien podría ser una chicharra (cigarra) pues “nacen de debajo de la tierra y se revientan cantando, se mueren cantando,” como me explicó maravillada en este episodio.

Durante el estallido social en Chile a finales de 2019, tras días de protestas, la artista Javiera Mena solía terminar sus noches en la discoteca Matrix en la rebautizada Plaza de la Dignidad de Santiago. La reivindicación continuaba en la pista de baile, por lo menos para esta cantautora y sus amigas. “Solamente las arriesgadas íbamos a esa fiesta,” dice Javiera en entrevista con Nuria Net en el podcast LATINXTRANSFER. “Había mucha energía y mucho entusiasmo. Se sentía el olor a bomba lacrimógena. Era como algo muy de fin del mundo, la verdad, muy como de Akira. Así yo me imaginaba a ese animé.” De estallido social a estallido corporal. El nuevo EP de esta cantante pop, ahora radicada en Madrid, está inspirado en esa energía de los cambios sociales en su país. Es una Javiera más vulnerable y erótica de lo que venía haciendo en su etapa anterior, cuando la fichó Sony. Ahora vuelve a la libertad creativa, y como compositora e intérprete considero que está en su mejor momento. Esto es pop del bueno. En el podcast, Javiera Mena también cuenta que según las integrantes de Las Tesis, el himno feminista “Un Violador en tu camino” fue inspirado por el duo electrónico Las Bistecs de Barcelona. Sí, la revolución es y seguirá siendo bailada.

Duelo, ritual, conexión, magia, sanación. De eso trata “La Loba” el disco más reciente de Sophie Fustec, conocida artísticamente como La Chica. La cantautora y pianista franco-venezolana hace una búsqueda interior tras sufrir trágicas pérdidas personales en el último año, y esa vulnerabilidad la plasma en su música a manera de trance. "Necesito magia y necesito conexión con los demás y con los elementos en mi vida," dice La Chica, "siempre voy a buscar esa conexión donde sea. Entonces, claro, es algo que puedo contar a través de la música." Todo esto suena muy esotérico, pero escucha la entrevista, te sorprenderá. Y no te pierdas la historia sobre el maravilloso encuentro que La Chica tuvo con Rubén Blades, uno de sus ídolos.

Ha tardado 25 años viviendo en Bélgica, para que Gabriel Ríos mirara hacia sus raíces en Puerto Rico y lo plasmara en su música. Su nuevo disco, Flore, es totalmente en español, una mezcla de covers de boleros y clásicos de salsa reimaginados junto con tres temas originales, incluyendo ‘La torre’ featuring Devendra Banhart. Fue una visita extendida a Puerto Rico en 2017, pocos meses antes del devastador huracán María, que desató este viaje interior del artista que lo sacudió emocionalmente. En esta, su primera entrevista en español en su carrera (!!!), una charla de boricua a boricua en la diáspora en la que Gabriel Ríos se sincera sobre la memoria, la nostalgia, la identidad y sus raíces.

Desde que se estrenó como productor y artista bajo el nombre de Instituto Mexicano del Sonido hace 15 años, no pasaba una semana en la que Camilo Lara no se montara en un avión para irse de gira o trabajar con otros artistas. Este culo inquieto se pasaba más tiempo fuera de México que en su propio país, y así se convirtió en un embajador de la música e idiosincrasia mexicanas en sus canciones y en proyectos como Mexrrissey (cover band de Morrissey y The Smiths en versiones mariachi) o su trabajo en películas como ‘Coco’ o series como ‘Narcos’. La Ciudad de México (antes conocida como 'El Distrito Federal’) de Camilo Lara suena a los Smiths, a hip hop, a recolectores ambulantes de chatarra, a cumbia. También suena a la gentrificación y ahora que no puede viajar por la pandemia, a caminatas matutinas por su barrio de la Roma. El ‘Distrito Federal’ es también el título de su nuevo y sexto disco, que va de pasado, presente y futuro, y muestra a un Camilo Lara que dice haber encontrado una voz propia. “Este DF es mi universo, es mi mi mundo,” dice en LATINXTRANSFER.

¿Qué más se puede decir sobre Lido Pimienta y su disco ‘Miss Colombia’, el cual colmó las listas de lo mejor de 2020 y hasta entró entre los favoritos de Barack Obama? En LATINXTRANSFER, una entrevista fresca, honesta, en la que Lido habla de sus planes futuros, fantasías a largo plazo y se sincera sobre sus inicios como artista en la era de MySpace, cuando el universo digital latinx era chiquito, y no por eso menos solitario y cruel. Se alejó de la música por cuatro años, y luego vino ‘La Papessa’, el premio Polaris, y luego la consagración con ‘Miss Colombia’. Se siente satisfecha en su rol de madre y haber hecho su carrera a su manera. “Si la música siempre quiere que seas parte de ella, pues métete ahí, métete de cabeza, mami, entonces,” es ahora su actitud, aunque ya está confabulando proyectos de cine, televisión y teatro. “Soy artista, no soy entertainer”, dice Lido. “Necesito que mi arte hable. No yo, sino mi arte.”

Por segundo año consecutivo aquí en LATINXTRANSFER, contamos con colegas periodistas que comparten sus impresiones musicales de 2020. ¡Es el “Latinx Hive Mind”! Gracias a Johni Jackson, E.R. Hacer reggaeton o trap viniendo del indie soul y el R&B y no “de la calle”. Cantar y rapear en español en tu tercer disco, cuando no lo has hecho nunca. En ‘Agüita’, Gabriel Garzón-Montano se atreve a incorporar a su repertorio temas urbanos, ampliando su universo creativo y su libre expresión artística ya consagrada en ciertos círculos. “Hay algo valioso en el experimento, en presentar que esto puede ser una manera de ser como artista”, dice Gabriel Garzón-Montano. “Es poner la mente en contextos inesperadamente diversos para liberarla y para que la mente pueda gozar de estéticas en un vacío”. Y no se queda ahí, la exploración continúa: en esta entrevista para LATINXTRANSFER nos adelanta que está grabando nueva música con Fania Records, sello latinx, neoyorquino y pionero como él mismo lo está siendo.

Las confluencias de las diásporas africanas y latinas resultan en afrobeats con flow que nos refrescan el alma este verano (y redimen a J Balvin y un poquitititito a Maluma.) El término ‘música urbana’ se utiliza comúnmente para agrupar las músicas hechas por afrolatinxs; géneros tan variados y transnacionales como el reggaeton, el trap, el dembow y la champeta. Esta etiqueta genérica ha sido cuestionada por sus orígenes en el contexto norteamericano (“urban music” para describir la música hecha por afroamericanos) ya que carga con un fuerte bagaje racista y hoy, la conversación vuelve a tomar impulso gracias a voces como Katelina “Gata” Eccleston y Jennifer Mota. Nuestras invitadas hoy en LATINXTRANSFER son periodistas, críticas culturales y sobretodo, documentalistas de estos géneros y sus intérpretes que siguen siendo discriminados en los medios tradicionales y en la industria. Recientemente Gata, Jenny y otros periodistas de medios como Remezcla han hecho un llamado a reconsiderar la categoría “música urbana” y sustituirla por el término “el movimiento”. Núria Net y la bailarina Kianí del Valle son dos boricuas en la diáspora europea y se conectan en LATINXTRANSFER para intercambiar música e impresiones existenciales en plena pandemia. Kianí es coreógrafa y directora de KDV Dance Ensemble, cuyo debut tuvo lugar en febrero justo antes de que las producciones culturales se suspendieran indefinidamente a nivel global. Kianí habla de sus colaboraciones con Boiler Room, trabajar con Residente y Bad Bunny en Puerto Rico, la escena latina en Berlín con fiestas underground como ‘Good Intentions’. La danza la ha llevado por todo el mundo pero su corazón sigue en la isla. Boricua en la luna, boricua en Berlín….Como dice Kianí, ‘el movimiento es sanador’, sobretodo en este limbo en el que nos encontramos. Puerto Rico está temblando, y mi corazón está en la isla. En este primer LATINXTRANSFER de 2020, estrenamos 'Mera' de Tainy featuring Alvaro Díaz y Dalex, de lo que será su disco The Kids That Grew Up on Reggaeton. Empezamos poniendo el foco en las nuevas voces urbanas de Puerto Rico como Enyel C y Villano Antillano y terminamos con los tótems de su escena indie alternativa: Alegría Rampante, Fofé y Macha Colón. During the summer of 2019, Puerto Ricans took to the streets to protest - and twerk - with hundreds joining a historic ‘perreo combativo’ twerkathon in the steps of the San Juan Cathedral on July 24th. That very same night, their embattled governor resigned. DJs Kaya Té and Perra Mística are part of the burgeoning queer music scene in Puerto Rico and my special guests in this season kickoff of LATINXTRANSFER on Perreo Combativo, a movement led by woke, ‘jayás’ queer millennials for whom “el perreo intenso” is as political as it is necessary. I met her in Madrid recently at Boiler Room and Ballantine’s True Music Forum focused on urbano music and you’ll get to listen to our unfiltered conversation in the program. Formerly a tattoo artist in Chile before jumping into music, Tomasa is a smart businesswoman who self-describes herself as part of a “digital generation that was raped by reggaeton and started making art”. She’s well aware that the reggaeton’s power players need new blood like her in order to survive and she intends to cash in and help others along the way. “They need people like us, they need girls, weird people, people with new ideas,” she says. Isa also runs the music label Etoro Records. Musicologist, DJ, producer, artist Rigo Pex, known for his work as Meneo, originally from Guatemala, has been in Spain for 18 years and is currently behind the musical act Peinetta in Madrid.
