Jay and Silent Bob recently arrived in Call of Duty as premium operator skins, but it's hardly the first time actors associated with Kevin Smith's View Askewniverse films have starred in games. Dave Rudden joins us this week to talk about five of 'em, after which we'll talk more about Blue Prince, the Minecraft movie, Switch 2 letting Zelda players repair their weapons with a mobile app, and the most money you've ever spent on a console at launch. Question of the Week: Do you have fond memories of any "companion-app" gaming experience? Should these still be a thing? Break song is Clerks by Love Among Freaks. Vidjagame Apocalypse theme by Matthew Joseph Payne.
The early Resident Evil games were once popular enough to spawn a whole horde of zombie-killing imitators with fixed camera angles and tank controls, and erstwhile host Dave Rudden rejoins us this week to laugh at five of the more obscure ones. Then we'll get into Sonic X Shadow Generations, Mechwarrior 5: Clans, news from the Xbox Partner Preview, and your most favoritest zombie games. Question of the Week: What's a game franchise you wish more competitors would rip off? Break song is David Duchovny, Why Won't You Love Me? (The Reboot) by Bree Sharp. Vidjagame Apocalypse theme by Matthew Joseph Payne.
Game Informer's plug was shockingly pulled last week, bringing the last of the major US videogame magazines to an unceremonious end. We'll leave it to others to properly eulogize GI, but we'll mark its passing by inviting Dan Amrich and Dave Rudden (both former editors of GamePro and other mags) to talk about five of our all-time favorite game magazines. Then we'll get into Volgarr the Viking II, World of Goo 2, a new Darksiders, and some things you were introduced to by videogames. Question of the Week: What's the first game magazine you remember reading? Specific issues if possible. Break song is the Nintendo Power commercial jingle. Vidjagame Apocalypse theme by Matthew Joseph Payne.

Charles Martinet, iconic voice of Mario, is stepping down from the role - and whie it's difficult to imagine the character without him, he's far from the first actor to embody the plucky Brooklyn plumber. This week, Dave Rudden and Anthony Abatte join Chris and Mikel for a look at five other actors' takes on Mario, after which we'll get into Bomb Rush Cyberfunk, Immortals of Aveum, a smattering of news from Gamescom and Opening Night Live, and the games you'd like to see get a Quake II-style glow-up. QOTW: Who do you think should be the next voice of Mario?
Sidekicks? Tag teams? Amateur stuff. This week, Greg Moore and Dave Rudden rejoin us for a look at five games that push you to move and be aware of two characters at the same time, with no help from another player. Then we'll put the pedal to the plastic in Lego 2K Drive, move fast and wreck stuff in Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun and Shinobi Non Grata, get into the raft of announcements from PlayStation Showcase 2023, and hear which Links are your favorite Links.

Helen Cullen and Anne Griffin are part of a golden generation of Irish writers and they talk about their trade with Dave Rudden.
The summer of 1990 brought about the end of Back to the Future with Part III, which traded the frantic, high-concept time travel adventures of the second movie for a more grounded finale rooted in the Old West. Though it's gained a bit of a reputation as a lackluster final act to an otherwise stellar series, Part III remains a satisfying conclusion that picks up many of the more emotional beats Part II left behind. On this episode, join Bob Mackey, Jeremy Parish, Henry Gilbert, and Dave Rudden as the crew discusses the concluding chapter of the trilogy and the many mostly bad Back to the Future games we haven't discussed so far. So listen in, and we'll see you in the future! (Specifically, next week.) Retronauts is a completely fan-funded operation. We're going back to the Back to the Future trilogy for a podcast discussion about what could be the most interesting sequel of all time! When Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale put together the original Back to the Future in 1985, they had no idea they would have such a massive hit on their hands—or that their joke ending would set the second movie's plot in stone. But by working against adversity, the two crafted a highly satisfying sequel that doubled down on time travel antics, and even added alternate universes into the mix. (And might have even predicted the future with 1985-A...) On this episode, join Bob Mackey, Jeremy Parish, Henry Gilbert, and Dave Rudden as the crew talks so much about Back to the Future Part II they have to save the video game discussion for the next episode. So listen now—unless you're chicken! Retronauts is a completely fan-funded operation. To support the show, and get exclusive episodes every month, please visit the official Retronauts Patreon.

When the Back to the Future Trilogy wrapped up in 1990, the time-traveling antics of Marty McFly and Doc Brown seemed destined for an episodic TV series. And it would eventually see one the following year, though this animated show wasn't a shameless cash-in. Overseen by BTTF scribe Bob Gale, and featuring live-action segments with Christopher Lloyd himself, this cartoon offered a level of quality far greater than what could have been—even if the focus on Doc's sons hold it back. On this episode, BTTF superfan Dave Rudden joins us as we discuss the debut episode, "Brothers." Nintendo followed up the modest success of the N64 with the GameCube: A small, sleek little system devoted solely to playing games. But in an era where the PlayStation 2's exclusives, backwards compatibility, and DVD playback features obliterated the competition, Nintendo found their nice little piece of hardware unable to gain any true traction. On this episode of Retronauts, join Bob Mackey, Kat Bailey, Jeremy Parish and Dave Rudden as the crew explores the console best known as "half of a Wii but without the duct tape:" the Nintendo GameCube.
This week's What A Cartoon! takes us back to Fox's Kids and the early 1990s as guest Dave Rudden brings us into Bobby's World. Ireland has been producing some remarkable YA fiction in recent years, much of which has addressed received notions of Irishness implicitly and explicitly. This is a valuable exercise in the context of Ireland and the Irish language being used as tropes in YA and fantasy literature abroad. In this week's episode, Irish Book Award winner Darach Ó Séaghdha interviews Irish Book Award winner Dave Rudden (ably assisted by future Irish Book Award winner Ola Majekodunmi). They chat about the writing process, first sentences and translate some of the key terms in Dave's books. You can find out more about Dave at www.daverudden.com - his new book, "The Endless King", is out shortly. --- Contact the show at https://twitter.com/motherfocloir or email us at motherfocloir@headstuff.org.

Author Dave Rudden joins Alan and Sarah so that they can feel all the emotions about Terry Pratchett. This is a long one so make a pot of tea or plan a long drive somewhere. We focused mostly on the Discworld novels particularly Vimes and the witches. There’s lots of enthusing and lots of quoting from memory. Hopefully it’ll make you pick up a Discworld book or any Terry Pratchett book really. They’re pretty much all good. Enjoy. Dave’s books Knights Of the Borrowed Dark and The Forever Court are out now. The Forever Court is nominated for Senior Children’s Book of the Year a the BGE Irish Book Awards. If you’re quick you can still vote for it here Sarah’s book Spare And Found Parts will be out in Ireland, the UK, and Australia in Feb 2018. Alan has another podcast running until Christmas. While the majority of us nostalgia-heads remember Punch-Out!! most from its brief association with Mike Tyson, this humble little series has an interesting history outside of its noteworthiness as an all-time NES classic. On this episode of Retronauts, join Bob Mackey, Jeremy Parish, Chris Antista, and Dave Rudden as the crew explores the entire Punch-Out!! series, from its roots as a wannabe Laserdisc game to its current status as a means of beating up whimsical ethnic stereotypes. Despite the fact that video games have been a household mainstay since the '80s, they've been mostly absent from TV programming until fairly recently. But before G4 emerged in 2002, there was GamePro TV: A short-lived, syndicated show from 1991 that existed as an extremely literal interpretation of the popular magazine. On this episode of Retronauts Micro, join Bob Mackey, Dave Rudden, Chris Antista, and Henry Gilbert as the crew explores this relic of the '90s and tries desperately to write down J.D. Roth's codes in time. It'll be totally tubular, bud! Be sure to visit our blog at Retronauts.com, and check out our partner site, USgamer, for more great stuff. These days, we have YouTube, Twitch, and a variety of platforms to bring us endless footage of just about every game ever made, but kids who grew up in the '90s weren't so lucky. Despite our prehistoric existence, though, we at least had the short-lived game show, Nick Arcade, which gave a nation of cable TV viewers nothing but pure gaming action for roughly 23% of its running time. On this episode of Retronauts Micro, enter the VIDEO ZONE as Bob Mackey, Chris Antista, Dave Rudden, and Henry Gilbert explore the best kids' entertainment Florida is capable of. Sorry to make you feel old, but Resident Evil turns 20 this year. And since we games journalists can't help but be obsessed with anniversaries that end in a 0 or a 5, it's only natural that we record a Retronauts retrospective on this rich subject. On this episode, listen in as Bob Mackey, Jeremy Parish, and guest Dave Rudden explore the first three Resident Evil games and their surprisingly convoluted histories. Bad news, everyone: We're all gonna die! (Eventually.) And to ensure our death beds are free of regret, we recorded a new Retronauts Micro about the game-related goals we still need to achieve before kicking the bucket. And while the inclement weather, prowling wolves, and sensitive sentry guns make each journey a perilous one, I think we can all agree putting your life on the line is more than worth it for a little more than an hour of quality podcast entertainment. On this year's Holiday Extravaganza, join host Bob Mackey as he welcomes guests Dave Rudden, Ray Barnholt, and Henry Gilbert for a rousing and festive chat about the execrable 1996 holiday special, "Sonic Christmas Blast."
