Nintendos Würfel feiert in diesen Wochen seinen 20.

Show Notes On this week's podcast, Dan and Kris take the Alphabet Soup-er Series to the next level by adding a rating system lifted directly out of the pages of GamePro magazine, and maybe even rank them all? Who knows! But it'll be fun! At the top of the show, Kris spends more time with Plucky Squire, dives into the history of Tetris, sneaks around with a raccoon, and probably nothing else because he got sick. Meanwhile, Dan continued to work on his virtual car, blew stuff up in Shotgun King, and more! Finally, in Week Old News, Animal Crossing gets chocolatey, Ubisoft continues to be a terrible company, Sega unsurprisingly doesn't like it when people try to profit off of their name, and more! With the last of the big USA based gaming magazines coming to an end, we decided it was a perfect time to look back at all the fond memories of not only Game Informer, but of all video game magazines. OK maybe not all (there were a lot!) but we do cover the heavy hitters - Gamepro, Electronic Gaming Monthly, and of course, Nintendo Power. We also get into some lesser known magazines like Next Generation and Ultra Game Players, as well as some of the magazines centered around walkthroughs like Tips & Tricks or Expert Gamer. Then you've got the console specific magazines that came with demo discs, and more - there is a ton to talk about! We've got a bookend of trivia for this episode as well - can you name the top 20 SNES games from March 1995? It's not that easy! So get out your reading glasses to read the fine print on that ProTip, and join us for this look back on video game magazines. We'll miss you Game Informer!

Game Informer's plug was shockingly pulled last week, bringing the last of the major US videogame magazines to an unceremonious end. We'll leave it to others to properly eulogize GI, but we'll mark its passing by inviting Dan Amrich and Dave Rudden (both former editors of GamePro and other mags) to talk about five of our all-time favorite game magazines. Then we'll get into Volgarr the Viking II, World of Goo 2, a new Darksiders, and some things you were introduced to by videogames. Question of the Week: What's the first game magazine you remember reading? Specific issues if possible. Break song is the Nintendo Power commercial jingle. On this week's episode, Nathan, Chris, and Riley discuss the auspicious occasion of three different game development studios – Gearbox, Saber, and Toys For Bob – all escaping from beneath the thumbs of layoff-prone owners in one day. Then we soberly reflect on mass layoffs at both Sony and EA – the other side of the coin in a week that seemed determined to sum up exactly where the video game industry is at right now. After that we move on to our impressions of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, which is actually out now. It's good! And weirdly janky for how beautiful it looks. Chris appreciates that Square Enix has dialed up – to borrow a phrase from long-defunct video game magazine GamePro – the “fun factor.” He also likes its take on the Chocobo theme, which he calls “fart music.” Nathan likes the in-game card game. That naturally segues into a conversation about the hot new digital card game du jour, Balatro (pronounced “BAH-lah-troh”), and why it got so popular seemingly overnight.    Credits - Hosts: Nathan Grayson, Chris Person, and Riley MacLeod - Podcast Production & Ads: Multitude - Subscribe to Aftermath!   About The Show Aftermath Hours is the flagship podcast of Aftermath, a worker-owned, subscription-based website covering video games, the internet, and everything that comes after from journalists who previously worked at Kotaku, Vice, and The Washington Post. Sometimes we even bring on guests from both inside and outside the video game industry! I don't know what else to tell you; it's a great time. Work On Your Game: Pro Basketball Turned EntrepreneurDre Baldwin has been an athlete since he was old enough to play outside. From football to baseball to track to basketball, Dre was always physically active and super-competitive. Even at his young age, Dre sought to compete, challenge and test both himself and his opponents in every sport, in constant search for a mental edge. Finally settling on basketball at the age of 14, Dre tried and failed to make his high school varsity basketball team for 3 years, finally making the team as a senior... only to sit on the bench for nearly the entire season. Dre "walked on" to play basketball in college at the NCAA Division 3 level, where he finished his college years not even on the basketball team after a coaching change left Dre on the outside looking in – again. For most athletes, that would be the end of the line...Driven by his internal competitive fire, Dre was determined to take his career to professional level. Using his marketing & self-promotion talents, he hustled his way to a first contract in 2005. Dre enjoyed a 9-year professional basketball career that took him through 8 countries in all, including Lithuania, Montenegro, Germany, Mexico, Croatia and Slovakia. For the past 15 years, "DreAllDay" has changed the lives of over 75 million entrepreneurs, athletes and business professionals, sold  thousands of copies of his books, courses and programs, pioneered personal branding through content, and built a business that helps tens of thousands of people master their "Game" in business, sports and in life, from the inside-out.Free Book:The NEW Book For People Who Want To Be More Consistent & Disciplined – But Can't Get Started...
