Egyetemi évfolyamtársával, a forgatókönyvíró Bob Gale-lel gyakorlatilag a George Lucas-i értelemben vett trilógiák avatott mesterévé vált. Robert Zemeckis a szó legjobb értelmében vett populáris tömegfilmes, de sosem félt olyan helyekre bekukkantani, ahol a művészfilmesek is óvatosak (vérfertőző vonzalom, hátrányos helyzetűekkel való bánásmód, alkoholizmus természetrajza). Több kellene belőle Hollywoodban.A beszélgetés résztvevői:Balázsy IstvánLaska PálA Régen minden jobb volt a Tilos Rádió történelmi-popkulturális műsora:https://www.facebook.com/regen.minden.jobb.volt

It was something of a surprise last week when Niagara Region chair Bob Gale announced his sudden resignation less than four months after being appointed by the Ontario government, but it was even more surprising when we found out why: He purchased a signed original copy of Adolf Hitler's memoir and manifesto, Mein Kampf. Gale said he was a history buff, but anti-racism activists saw an entirely different explanation amidst the growing boldness of white supremacy in the region. From a fight at the Stampede Ranch last weekend where racial slurs were allegedly uttered to an Aggie pub night at the University of Guelph in January where some students were allegedly wearing t-shirts with hate symbols and discriminatory slurs, and from a demonstration by white nationalists on a London overpass last fall to a similar gathering outside Hamilton city hall last month, there's a startling trend of racist groups in Ontario feeling increasingly emboldened. Niagara Region seems particularly susceptible to these groups and this year alone there have been a pair of incidents in Grimsby, including one outside a Tim Hortons, and also last Labour Day when there was a gathering of Second Sons at Brock's Monument in Queenston Heights. Given what's going on in communities around Niagara Region, is it easier to understand why people were concerned that the regional chair was the proud owner of a signed copy of Hitler's book? To talk about it, we're joined by Saleh Wazirudden from the Niagara Region Anti-Racism Association who will talk about the state of fighting white supremacy in Niagara Region, why these groups are feeling so emboldened and why so many of them seem to be operating in the area. We will also talk about why Gale can't hide behind his excuse of history enthusiasm, connecting the dots across Ontario, and what you should be on the look out for when it comes to white nationalist activity in your community. So let's get back into fighting white supremacy on this week's Guelph Politicast!  You can learn more about the Niagara Region Anti-Racism Association at their website, or you can follow them on social media @TheNRARA on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and YouTube. I don't know if you knew this, but Back to the Future is kind of a big deal. Its known as a big hit, but that wasn't a forgone conclusion. Robert Zemeckis was not yet a household name, and while Michael J. Fox was a TV star, translating that to movie stardom was far from guaranteed. Many studios had already passed on the project, and time travel comedies weren't exactly in demand. But sometimes a movie arrives at exactly the right moment, and this was one of those times. It became one of the highest-grossing films of the year and launched one of the most cherished franchises Hollywood has ever produced. On this episode of the Retroist Podcast, I talk all about Back to the Future. I start off talking about what its like returning to your hometown after some time has passed. There's something genuinely disorienting about walking streets you know by heart but finding them subtly wrong. The layout is familiar but the details have shifted. You catch yourself navigating toward a store that closed a decade ago, or slowing down in front of a building that used to mean something. Your feet are in the present but your memory keeps insisting otherwise. It's about as close to time travel as most of us are ever going to get. From there I dig into the film itself, starting with how Bob Gale cooked up the idea after stumbling across his father's old high school yearbook. Seeing it, he wondered whether the two of them would have even gotten along back then. It's a surprisingly simple premise for a story that became so sprawling. After that I cover the development, the casting situation that saw Eric Stoltz replaced by Fox after weeks of actual filming, the production, the release, and the reception. Which was pretty positive. The music deserves its own podcast. Alan Silvestri's score is one of those rare things that makes you feel the emotion of a scene before the actors do anything. And then there's Huey Lewis and the News, whose contribution to the soundtrack sent “The Power of Love” to number one and functioned almost like an advertisement for the movie playing on every radio station in the country. The two things fed each other in a way that felt effortless but was almost certainly not. For a while there, the film was a mania. It wasn't just a movie people saw and enjoyed. It was something they returned to at the theaters, then on home video, then on television. Each new viewing of it reminded people why they loved it in the first place. On this episode I try to trace how that happened. I first covered the movie on a podcast way back in 2011. This is a re-recorded version that has new material and better equipment. It is also the start of a larger visit to the franchise. I hope you enjoy it.

Fall back in time with Legends Podcast! All month long, we're talking about time travel, paradoxes, and if my calculations are correct, when this baby hits 88 miles per hour... you're gonna see some serious shit! Forty years ago, director Robert Zemeckis and writer Bob Gale, partnering with Steven Spielberg as producer, introduced one of the most iconic time machines to ever grace the big screen: Doc Brown's DeLorean. But the road to bringing it to life was rocky - their pitch was rejected more than forty times, and when it was finally greenlit, it had a tiny budget, and their dream lead actor, Michael J. Fox, wasn't available. Once the cameras rolled, they quickly realized that their replacement lead, Eric Stoltz, wasn't working out. After a series of false starts, the movie ended up performing well with test audiences, and in a sign of confidence, the studio, Universal, ended up moving up the release date to July 3rd, leaving almost no time to finish the movie's special effects. Nevertheless, the result was a hit. It became the highest-grossing film of 1985, won three Oscars, spawned two sequels, an animated series, and a musical, and is widely regarded as one of the greatest films ever made. Now we're embracing our density, er, destiny and ending time travel month with one of the best to ever do it. [School of Movies 2025] Teenager from 1985 accidentally winds up in 1955 and meets his parents as teenagers, endangering his very existence. Bob Zemekis and Bob Gale made time travel immense and exhilarating, yet fun, intimate and personal, wisely choosing to focus (in a way that was rare at the time) on the everyboy hero's family relationships. And to illustrate quite how the alchemy of casting and crew was so key, they got several weeks into the original shoot with a completely different actor for Marty McFly. Things only finally clicked into place when Eric Stoltz exited the project and Michael J. Fox entered the scene, simultaneously filming day-shoots of the sit-com Family Ties. Three of the greatest movies ever made, and perennial occupants of my most beloved top spots, Back to the Future, both as a trilogy, and as a stand-alone film is so close to perfect that it can be rounded up to perfect with minimal argument. It has been fifteen years since I first recorded a show on each of these, and more than any other previous show, they were in desperate need of a revisit. What if I told you there was a movie written by Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale — the duo who would go on to create Back to the Future… directed by Steven Spielberg, fresh off the massive success of Jaws and Close Encounters… starring comedy legends John Belushi, Dan Aykroyd, and John Candy… and scored by the music genius behind Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Jaws, E.T., Jurassic Park — himself, John Williams? You'd expect a guaranteed blockbuster. Instead, what audiences got in 1979 was 1941 — Spielberg's first spectacular misfire.

✦ Break out your Flux Capacitor because when this show hits 88 miles per hour, you're going to see some serious…. stuff. That's right, “Back to the Future, The Musical” is coming to the Fox Theater this September. Bob Gale, co-writer of the original movies who helped bring to life Marty McFly and Doc Brown, has adapted the story for the stage, giving these beloved characters a whole new dimension. City Lights Collective producer Josh Thane sat down with Gale, along with Atlanta native and cast member Cartreze Tucker, to talk about translating this cinematic classic into live theater magic. ✦ Quilting has a long, rich history that crosses many different cultures and eras. For African Americans, creating quilts served not only as a means of survival and communication but also as a tool to share stories and showcase their artistry. O.V. Brantly created the Atlanta Quilt Festival 17 years ago to preserve and promote African American quilting and textile art. The juried exhibition has grown to over 100 quilts on display at the Southwest Arts Center and is on view through September 6. WABE arts reporter Summer Evans went down to check out these vibrant pieces of artwork. ✦ City Lights Collective member Shane Harrison spends his days at ArtsATL looking for cultural events to share with readers. He joins us weekly to share highlights, and today his mix includes The Weeknd at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, A Strange Loop at Actor's Express, and two shows that highlight the silver screen at The Booth Western Art Museum. ✦ Visual artist and music enthusiast Kosmo Vinyl bought his first LP when he was nine. He spent the next several decades immersed in music and began his professional career at London's pioneering indie label, "Stiff Records." In 1979, Kosmo started working exclusively with "The Clash," who were once billed as The Only Band That Matters, and stayed by their side until the punk icons disbanded in 1986. Over the years, Kosmo's record collection became legendary. In 2014, he began posting about his favorite releases on social media for his series, "Kosmo's Vinyl of the Week," and he joins us weekly to share the stories behind the records he treasures. This week, he shares the story behind "Roadrunner" from The Modern Lovers. ✦ Known for his vibrant, retro-inspired illustrations, Atlanta-based artist Derek Yaniger's work is a delightful blend of mid-century modern aesthetics, vintage comic book style, and rock 'n' roll culture. His art often features bold lines, striking colors, and a playful sense of nostalgia, making him a standout in the world of contemporary illustration. Yaniger's journey has taken him through a variety of creative industries, from ad agencies to Marvel comics to Cartoon Network. He has a special place in his heart for Atlanta's pop culture convention Dragon Con and has collaborated on artwork that combined the ethos of the convention with his signature style. You can see Derek and his art next week in the Comic and Pop Artist Alley at Dragon Con, and he recently joined City Lights Collective Co-host Kim Drobes to discuss his artistic process, influences, and his attachment to our city's longest-running fan-based convention.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In episode 498 I discuss how the filming of the movie Back to the Future started during a Mercury retrograde period, and the production experienced notorious delays, including firing the lead actor after 6 weeks of filming. By examining the challenges and ultimate success of the film, we can gain a deeper understanding of what Mercury retrograde truly means in astrology. The story begins with the filmmakers, Bob Gale and Robert Zemeckis, who, after years of developing the script, had their hearts set on Michael J. Fox for the lead role of Marty McFly. When Fox was unavailable, they moved forward with another actor, Eric Stoltz. Filming commenced in late November 1984, precisely as Mercury was slowing down to station retrograde. Mercury retrogrades are often associated with delays, revisions, and the need to redo things. The initial weeks of filming with Stoltz proved to be a prime example of these themes, as his more serious interpretation of the role clashed with the comedic vision of the filmmakers. This led to the difficult and highly unusual decision to recast the lead role in the middle of production. The story of Back to the Future's creation, with its delays and necessary do-overs, serves as a powerful real-world example of Mercury retrograde in action, teaching us that sometimes we must go back to the past to correct our course in order to create a better future. Join me as I break down the astrological timeline of these events and discuss the broader lessons we can learn about navigating our own Mercury retrograde periods. The 4-book story, Titled Wake Up, is a fantastically told and beautifully brought to page by the creative team. It doesn't really have any action and is really only loosely about Daredevil. Interesting, right? This is, without a doubt, worth spotlighting this week – so we'll talk more about it then.  The other main story we get this year is called Playing to the Camera in which Daredevil is sued by rich philanthropist Samuel Griggs and wants to retain Nelson and Murdock (specifically Matt Murdock) as his lawyer. Matt reluctantly agrees as he knows he wasn't involved with destroying the man's greenhouse and plants and wants to figure out who's behind it. As Daredevil, he hires a lawyer and they have their days in court surrounded by a media circus.   The trial ends with 3 daredevils in the courtroom - Murdock as himself holding a video tape of himself as Daredevil earlier that morning, Peter Parker in a Daredevil costume with the defense attorney and a third Daredevil who crashes a window, admits to the property damage, offers the $50k needed to fix it and then reveals his true identity as Terrance Hillman. Confused? So is Murdock and Nelson. Apparently, Hillman decided on his own to dress up as Daredevil and crash the courtroom. He then used the reveal and announced retirement to swing fame and fortune (and help out the real Daredevil). We also learn that Hillman didn't destroy the property either and that the Ringmaster was behind everything. He was testing his ability to implant false memories in people.   One interesting side note about the first issue of the Playing with Camera storyline. A second story appears in the issue “My Brother's Keeper” written by Stan Lee and Kevin Hall with art by Gene Colan. In the short story, we see Daredevil and Spider-Man during a night out.  We did get one more book in December from Brian Michael Bendis but we'll save that for next year's discussion.  Finally In Daredevil: Yellow we get a 6-book story in which Matt is writing letters to the late Karen Page about the early days of Daredevil and the Nelson and Murdock law firm as a way to find forgiveness for everything that happened between them. The story, by Jeph Loeb, artist Tim Sale and colors by Matt Hollingsworth, is another retailing of the first handful of issues from Daredevil volume 1 that ends with the Purple Man story and Matt finding the forgiveness he needs.    This Week's Spotlight: Daredevil volume 2 #16 May 2001 - #19 August 2001 “Wake Up” Recap Why We Picked This Story Daredevil Rapid Fire Questions The Takeaway Writers are the key. Is the Back to the Future Trilogy the culmination of what we think of as the Amblin Experience? Did you know that the original thought was to have Doc and Marty travel back to the groovy '60s? And what exactly happened with all that Crispin Glover stuff? All those questions and more are discussed as Vespe is joined by his Ain't It Cool compatriot and incredibly film writer Drew McWeeny as we dive into Back to the Future Part 2, a film that set the template that's still being followed to this day (looking at you, Avengers: Endgame). We bring up lots of behind the scenes stories and take a close look at Spielberg's relationship with Bob Gale and Robert Zemeckis. It's a ripper, this one. Learn more about your ad choices.
