TRIGGER WARNING: Suicide/suicidal ideation. My guest this week, and our first back for Season 14, is Sophie White. A prolific and massively successful author and podcaster, Sophie is also mother to three boys between 10 and 4 and has battled with mental illness since she was in her early 20s. As Sophie says herself in the episode, it's not often someone can pinpoint exactly when they became mentally ill, but she can – a drug-induced psychosis in 2007 led to her being hospitalised and later diagnosed with Bipolar 2. We chat about everything from gender stereotypes and how trucks and cars just seemed to manifest in her home in the same way dolls and nail polish manifested in mine, to how she coped through multiple serious mental illness relapses. We also touched on the issue of responsibility and mental illness, and whether it's an irresponsible thing to do to have children when you know you're likely to be unwell. It's a fascinating episode in which I let Sophie do the talking – I couldn't compete with her eloquence and bravery and honesty on the subject – so I really hope you enjoy it. Hosted on Acast. Buy Sophie White's book My Hot Friend here. Sign up to my Substack with 20% off for more Owning It related content and to connect personally HERE. I am joined here by award winning bestselling author and columnist Sophie White. Sophie shares her story with me, the pivotal moment at the age of 22 that changed everything, the diagnosis of bipolar II she would later receive, the anxiety of needing psychiatric care versus what it was really like and how she eventually began to own her mental illness. I want to include a trigger warning (TW) here as Sophie does discuss a particularly tough point of suicidal ideation that she reached in her mid 20s. Now a mother of three and an incredibly successful writer, I hope that Sophie's story gives reassurance to those struggling with mental illness, whether or not it is bipolar or just more chronic anxiety as was the case for me, that it won't always define you or be all that you do. There's so much to discuss with Sophie, we decided towards the end to make this a two parter. So this first episode is Sophie's story right up until she got a handle on things and we will follow up in a few short weeks with how her story continued when she became a parent, an experience which for many of us can be fraught with anxiety in itself. Thank you for listening and please, if you like the series, hop on over to my substack where we can connect on a more personal level and get more useful content delivered to your inbox. you'll find me at carolineforan.substack.com and the newsletter is called Own It. Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/owningittheanxietypodcast. Things are really getting spooky now as Sophie White joins us to talk about one of the most influential horror films of all time, Tobe Hooper's The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. Alan and Sophie both saw TTCSM at way too young an age so we have a good chat about that and lots of other stuff. If you've seen it before then you know that we're going to be talking about some heavy stuff. If you haven't then consider this a Content Warning for violence against women for this episode. Sophie is @sophwhitewoop on instagram. She has written many books, the latest one Where I End is out right now. She also co-hosts two of your favourite podcasts, Mother Of Pod and The Creep Dive Alan is @alan_maguire. Juvenalia is his main thing right now. Sarah is @griffski. Her books are in all good bookshops. Thank you to Dee McDonnell for our artwork. We have a Patreon! You can get bonus episodes including our fortnightly show Started/Finished where we talk about the pop culture we started and finished in the last while. We also have some free lil bits of merch. It's patreon.com/juvenalia This episode was produced by Cassie and Alan. Juvenalia is a Tall Tales podcast. Thank you Cassie.

Greetings from New York! This whole episode was recorded on zoom and edited on a plane so apologies if there are any hiccups. I discuss the excellent new Sinead O'Connor documentary Nothing Compares with its director Kathryn Ferguson, and a sickly Esther O'Moore-Donohoe and I lament the loss of Angela Lansbury.Recommendation this week is Where I End by Sophie White. Claudia Hammond explores the psychology of regret with an audience at the Cheltenham Science Festival. What role do rueful thoughts on "what might have been" play in our lives? Is regret a wasted emotion or does it have some hidden benefits? Joining Claudia on stage : Teresa McCormack - Professor of Cognitive Development at the School of Psychology, Queen's University Belfast who researches how regret in childhood can shape our decisions; novelist and essayist Sophie White - whose latest novel The Snag List examines the opportunity to go back in life and follow the road not taken; Fuschia Sirois - Professor of social and health psychology at Durham University whose research examines the impact of those "what if" thoughts on our health and wellbeing. Producer Adrian Washbourne Made in partnership with the Open University
