Today we are releasing a bonus episode, which we originally recorded with our friend, Kyle Kamp, for his show, the Valley to Peak Nutrition Podcast. Kyle interviewed Mark & Steve about some of the lessons they have learned doing Death Hikes over the years. This whole conversation was conceived because of a recent comment that Steve made on a Monday Minute episode, when he mentioned something along the lines of... "I am not sure that we can make a truly hard Death Hike again, because we have learned so many lessons on how to manage mistakes, which makes even hard hikes easier." Kyle heard that comment and wanted to hear more about what those mistakes and lessons are. And that is what we discuss in this episode. Exo Mtn Gear Death Hike Part Three- The lessons. This week we talk to four veterans of the Exo Mtn Gear Death Hike and get their perspective on five topics: How did you train? How'd you tackle nutrition? What gear did you use, love, and loathe? What's your mindset when things get tough? What did you learn/would you do differently? One thing you'll most certainly find is that there are no similarities in each persons answer(s). Links Referenced in the Show Mtn Tough workout programming. Summit Strength programming. We dive deep into the training aspect- not just reviewing what we did, but also talking through HIGH level things (like phasing and "periodization") that you can apply to your own training. We chat through what worked well from a nutrition standpoint- and what didn't. How many calories did we take? How'd we space it out? And, a host of other topics that will help give you insight on how to fuel for an event like this in YOUR future. Finally, we talk through gear- what worked well, what didn't, and the advantages/disadvantages of different type of materials for an event like this. LAST but not least- Mark and I both put together gear and nutrition lists of everything we took with us. You'll find all of that and more in the show and in the show notes on this weeks episode! This episode recaps my experience on the Exo Death Hike in 2019. At the time of its release, it's been one week since these events occurred so it was important for me to capture my thoughts and get them down into an episode for others to learn from. This is a solo show, meaning it's only me on this time. In it I cover what the Death Hike is, how it works, what it entailed this year, and most importantly, what I learned from it. This hike is meant to push your limits and it did just that. There were a number of things that happened to my body that I think are worth talking about in hopes that others can learn from my experiences. This podcast was created to help people backpack better. Sometimes we do well, sometimes we don't. What matters is that we continue to learn and share that knowledge with those around us.By Land,Emory R. Will telling somebody that they won't succeed actually motivate them to succeed? Does drinking fast food salsa a great nutritional trail strategy? And is jumping into a pool with your clothes on a great way to train? These are just a taste of the topics that pop up. Please check out the Trailblaze Challenge mentioned in the tidbits of this episode. It's put on by the Make-A-Wish Foundation. On today's episode we talk EXO Packs, Death Hikes, and Toe Socks with Mark Huelsing of EXO Mountain Gear. Mark has been with EXO from the beginning and he also hosts their Hunt Backcountry Podcast. He is a dedicated backcountry hunter and a fellow gear junky so this podcast was a lot of fun for me. We talk about his favorite EXO Pack, pack weight, assorted gear, and the origin of the Death Hike.
The 2018 EXO Death Hike was 90+ miles over three days, with 21,000 feet elevation gain. Sound impossible? We chatted with Mark Huelsing from the Hunt Backcountry podcast and EXO Mountain gear packs, and finisher of the 2018 Death Hike to find out what it takes to complete such a physical and mental challenge. This is in preparation for the first Highlander Challenge, which we will be organizing for Summer 2019. If you want to come along, email us!
Mike and John are getting fired up for the start of bow season. This episode they do a side by side comparison of the Mystery Ranch and FHF bino harness systems. They go over the features of Mike's new ultralight tent, then they start brainstorming about putting on a EXO Mountain style "Death Hike" next summer. They're looking for input from listeners on this.... There's a bunch of new HHP vinyl sitckers that the guys are giving away. Just email highlanderhuntingpodcast@gmail.com today!
"Rare are the times in life when you can feel yourself growing as a person. Some are obvious, children being born, joining the military, certainly major life events. This hike however snuck into that same category. I was tested, I was broken, mentally defeated by pain through a war of attrition. I had so little skin left on my feet after day 2 I wanted to quit, it was all I think about. I wrestled with it alone for hours. Each step felt like walking on broken glass. I won't lie I actually broke down and cried at one point around mile 80 I was struggling so badly. The bottom line is I was able to pull from the guys around me when I was weak, I reached into a reserve tank I had never felt before. By mid morning day 3 I would've walked through fire to finish. I had to prove to myself and my guys I could do this, no matter what. EVERYONE should get to this level at some point and it doesn't matter where or how far it takes. One line from the @jockowillink podcast bounced in my head and seemingly fit this situation like a glove. “Human will is a superpower when called upon.” Amen to that." - Dan SolsmanThe above quote is what sparked this episode. It was written by my guest Dan Solsman, shortly after his experience on the Exo Mountain Gear "Death Hike." I found Dan when he came on the Hunt Backcountry Podcast to talk about this exact post and what it meant to him. After getting a taste for where his thoughts were, I decided to reach out for a chat. He kindly obliged and this podcast episode is the result. On this episode we talk about pushing our personal limits and why it's important to do so. This episode is dedicated to those of you who know what it's like to find your limits and hopefully it's an inspiration to those who are sitting back waiting for something to happen.Dan is a hell of a guy and has a straight forward way about him. He's direct about why he does what he does and has a great personal story about how he came to enjoy finding his personal limits. Please enjoy this episode with Dan!By Land,Emory RonaldTHANKS FOR LISTENING!!Taking the time to listen to this podcast is greatly appreciated! Tyler Okamura joined 30 other guys last month to trek 92.5 miles over the course of three days in some of Idaho's most challenging backcountry. On this episode he dives into the exactly how the Death Hike was laid out, what he decided to pack and decided to leave home, and how the mental side of the trip effected the group.
This was the fourth year that Exo Mtn Gear co-founders, Steve Speck and Lenny Nelson, gathered a group of guys to embark upon a challenging hike nicknamed “The Death Hike”. The hike has changed each year — the location, the distance, the terrain, and the participants. This year, thirty-one crazy fools showed-up to hike 90+ miles through some of Idaho's most beautiful and rugged mountains. In the end, we hiked 92.5 miles and climbed over 21,000 feet in elevation. Some of us took a few detours (got lost) and hiked even more. None of the past Death Hikes had been easy; but none of them could come close to this year's distance and total vertical. Of the thirty-one that started, twenty-one completed each and every mile of the hike. Those other ten gents either dropped-out completely or sat-out portions of the hike. For more information about the hike, including detailed gear and food lists, a What's In My Pack video, and more, visit http://ExoMountainGear.com/133
In this Monday Minute, Mark and Steve recap the Northwest Mountain Challenge at Hoodoo, discuss Mark's 26+ mile hike in preparation for the Exo Death Hike, share good news about Exo inventory, and more. Steve joins us to talk about the new Fusion pattern available on the 2018 Exo Packs, as well some exciting developments on the Death Hike for this summer.
The 2017 Exo Death Hike was a success! Twenty guys completed just shy of 40 miles through some beautiful Idaho high country. Although the terrain was rough, the trail was good for much of the hike, which meant that this year's hike wasn't as torturous as last year's. It was far from a “walk in the park” though, and every man had plenty of opportunity to test his physical and mental strength. In this #HuntBackcountry episode, Mark and Steve are joined by fellow Death Hiker and backcountry hunter, Tyler Boschma. The three of them recap the hike, detailing what worked well and what could have gone better. They then dive into some of Tyler's adventurous hunting stories and dissect some of his future hunting opportunities. HOLY ZION!!! Greetings friends. The Danger Hour is back with ALL NEW Episode#195(Death Hike.) In this Episode, your fancy pants host, James, sits alone in a dark room and discusses: No good women, Half Dome, Zion, Grand Canyon, ignoring old people, child endangerment, wasps, vodka tragedy, there is no Tooth Fairy, and so much more! So grab a drink, remove your clothing, press play and waste some time in style.
You are dropped off in the expansive Frank Church Wilderness. The plane that brought you here is now gone and there is only one way out. You hike, and hike, and hike. Heat, rattlesnakes, and blisters are just a few of your enemies. You question your sanity. Thankfully, you are not alone; there are other guys who were courageous (dumb?) enough to have joined you. This is the Exo Mountain Gear death hike... http://exomountaingear.com/44
