This is the recording of the interview from Wednesday, May 21st with ultrarunner Ryan Thorpe, who recently set the Fastest Known Time (FKT) on the Catskills section of the New York Long Path. Ryan completed the full "blue line to blue line" traverse: from the northernmost to the southernmost boundaries of Catskill Park in an incredible time of 32 hours, 24 minutes, and 53 seconds. Mild-mannered, elementary school teacher Jason Hardrath may be a superhero. After competing in college as a cross country athlete, he turned to triathlons and then Iron Mans to push the limits of his endurance. Simultaneously, he developed his skills in the mountains and soon sought to combine the two, setting an audacious goal-- the first person to complete 100 Fastest Known Time (FKT). Jason's endurance and commitment seemed unending. That is, until he got COVID. Alexandra Garcia's journey into the outdoors began in adulthood, after relocating from Puerto Rico to Virginia, USA. What started as a personal reconnection with nature quickly turned into a deep passion for endurance challenges that test both body and mind. Since climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro in 2017 and completing the Grand Canyon rim-to-rim in 2018, Alex has pursued adventures that push her limits — including backpacking rugged trails in Puerto Rico and continuously seeking what she calls “difficult pursuits.” Now based in Western North Carolina near Pisgah National Forest, Alex is not only an outdoor athlete and writer but also a changemaker. She co-founded the AWE Summit Scholarship Foundation to increase accessibility and gender equity in mountain sports, helping women and girls around the world reach new heights — literally. In 2025, Alex will travel to France to climb Mt. Blanc, and she's also training for a Fastest Known Time (FKT) attempt on a challenging trail route. Whether she's writing, running, or leading with purpose, Alexandra is passionate about personal growth, emotional resilience, and helping others find the courage to take on their own version of hard. *** Catch the latest episodes of the Tough Girl Podcast, dropping every Tuesday at 7 am UK time! Back in February, Kate Worthington accomplished an incredible feat by completing the Snowdonia Slate Trail, a challenging 83 mile journey that circles Snowdonia, showcasing its unique slate heritage and breathtaking landscapes. Kate achieved the Fastest Known Time (FKT) unsupported, a testament to her strength and resilience. Completing a route unsupported means relying entirely on oneself, with no external assistance. Everything needed must be carried from start to finish, except for water sourced from nature along the way.The Snowdonia Slate Trail offers remarkable variety, winding through bustling villages as well as quiet, tucked-away corners of Snowdonia. Along the route, adventurers encounter slate quarries, tranquil forests, and vast, empty mountains. This trail truly has it all.XMILES UK - 10% discount via the link below.https://xmiles.avln.me/c/RiwxnARvfHeRSHOKZ - Use code TEA102025 to receive £10 off your orderhttps://uk.shokz.com?sca_ref=7394994.MfsDQZBAeLQihiPrecision Fuel & Hydration https://visit.pfandh.com/3GKxHjUPrecision Fuel & Hydration Planner https://visit.pfandh.com/3RuP25zHarrier - Use code TEA10 for 10% off your order https://harrierrunfree.co.uk/Fenixlight Limited https://www.fenixlight.co.uk/Protein Rebel - Use code Tea15 for 15% off your first order https://proteinrebel.com/Centurion Running - Use code TEAANDTRAILS10 to receive 10% off all orders *Excluding Sale Items.https://centurionrunning.com/LIFE JACKET SKIN PROTECTION - Use code GOTYOURBACK for 10% off your first orderhttps://lifejacketskin.com/PRIMUS UK - Use code TT-PRIMUS-20 for 20& off your orderhttps://primusequipment.co.uk/Content may contain affiliate links which can help support and grow this channel at no extra cost to you. She discusses her long-standing dream of hiking the PCT, her training and preparation, the challenges she faced including fire closures, and how she found motivation despite setbacks. She discusses her food strategies, the meticulous planning involved in her FKT attempt, and the emotional challenges she faced, including reflections on failure and the importance of perseverance. Katie also touches on her identity transformation through hiking, the significance of her trail name, and her passion for adventure and art. takeaways Katie had been dreaming about the PCT for over 10 years. The goal was to achieve the southbound record or hike as fast as possible. Katie transitioned from road running to trail running during the pandemic. Her first real thru-hike was the Arizona Trail, which helped her prepare for the PCT. She faced significant challenges with fire closures right at the start of her hike. Despite the setbacks, Katie remained committed to completing the trail. She learned to find joy in the journey, not just the destination. Katie's motivation shifted from achieving a record to personal fulfillment. The experience taught her the importance of intrinsic motivation in outdoor adventures. Katie completed the last 140 miles in a continuous push, demonstrating her resilience. I structured my day to have very limited breaks. I was cold soaking the good old Talenty jar. I had a spreadsheet and a lot of help from previous record holders. I had a very long time to think about failure. You don't have to be the person who gets the thing for it to matter. It's a puzzle and I want to figure it out. Can you turn around and do it again? It's okay to fail and you can find success in anything. I think more women just need to get out there and try it. Failure is not as scary as it sounds when you're starting something. Sound Bites "I was devastated. I didn't even get to try." "This means nothing, but it can matter to me." "I did a couple of 45s, a bunch of 40s." "I finished delirious. Yeah, losing my mind." "I tried to allow myself to sleep." "I was cold soaking the good old Talenty jar." Born and raised in the heart of the Pyrenees, Kilian Jornet is the GOAT of mountain running and skimo, and he's an accomplished climber too. This past summer, Jornet used his extraordinary fitness and deep reservoir of mountain skills and savvy to tackle one of the greatest challenges of the Alps: a traverse of all 82 of the range's 4,000-meter peaks, solely by foot and bike. The fastest previous time for this link-up was 60 days. Jornet did it in 19. Cutting Edge host Jim Aikman interviewed Kilian Jornet about his “Alpine Connections” project—the preparation, the physiological and psychological challenges, and the real dangers of covering hundreds of kilometers of serious alpine terrain at speed, often alone. For context on the history of grand Alpine enchainments and commentary on Jornet's latest feat, Jim spoke with Colin Haley, elite climber and Chamonix resident; Buzz Burrell, one of the originators of the Fastest Known Time (FKT) movement; and Dougald MacDonald, editor of the American Alpine Journal. Is it mountaineering? Is it running? Whatever you think of a feat like this, it's undeniably at the cutting edge.

Send us a textAlright, meet Tara Dower, AKA "Candy Mama” (a trail name born of sugar and love for her trail mates); while she's refined some of those habits… the sweet, sweet nickname still stands.Tara set the Fastest Known Time (FKT) on the Appalachian Trail, powering through 2,189 miles in 40 days, 18 hours, and 5 minutes. To put that in perspective, that's like running from Calgary to Toronto…while climbing Mt. Everest 16 times. (My feet hurt just thinking about it!)So Who's This Crazy MOFO? Tara is the definition of grit, making it on the news as an endurance phenom. This is not Tara's first stab at the Appalachian Trail, previously accomplishing a thru-hike over the course of 5 months in 2019. If that bit of perseverance isn't enough, Tara shifted her goals and intentions with completing this hike to enjoy the challenge, not just another box to tick!Pit Crew to the Rescue! Tara is a metaphorical race car, fueled by a pit crew swapping out shoes like tires. Along the way, Tara raised over $50,000 for Girls on the Run along the way, mentoring the next gen of fearless female athletes. Her feat is part of a new wave of women pushing limits in endurance running. Even a powerhouse like Tara doesn't celebrate till it's over, claiming that she knew she'd made it when she got close enough that “Even if I fall and break my leg, I'll crawl! ” (Talk about GRIT baby)Whether you're an endurance athlete or you've just got a tough goal, take a note from Candy Mama: set your ego aside, follow your curiosity, and remember—if you don't try, you'll never know. On April 27, 2024, Lea Mulligan set the Women's Fastest Known Time (FKT) for the Smokies Challenge Adventure Run - S.C.A.R. - a 72-mile segment on the Appalachian Trail that runs from Tennessee to North Carolina through the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. But despite the impressive outcome, the lead-up to the race was anything but pretty. A challenging training block, a foot injury, wedding planning, and a horrible night of "sleep" before her FKT attempt, Lea was reminded that sometimes choosing to follow through is harder than the actual task itself. Jennifer Pharr Davis is perhaps best known in our community for her two fastest known times set on the Appalachian Trail in 2008 and 2011. The latter record, in my humble opinion, stands as one of the most important and influential feats in the ultra-endurance community during the 2010s.Jennifer is also the author of an excellent book called 'The Pursuit of Endurance', which profiles well-known athletes from the long-distance Fastest Known Time (FKT) scene, including Scott Jurek, Heather Anderson, David Horton, and Warren Doyle. During this conversation, we gain insights from Jennifer on the state of the FKT world. We discuss whether the current media attention, regulations, and styles that drive many modern athletes are a net positive for this space. And Jennifer also shares how she approached the trail and provides updates on what she's currently involved in.Sponsors:Naak - use code SINGLETRACK15 at checkout on their website (https://www.naak.com/) to get 15% off your purchase.Rabbit - use code Singletrack20 at checkout on their website (https://www.runinrabbit.com/) to get 20% off your next order.Kodiak Cakes - use code Singletrack15 at checkout on their website (https://kodiakcakes.com/singletrackpodcast) to get 15% off your next order.Brooks Running - check out their High Point clothing collection and new and improved Cascadia 17 shoe at this link (https://www.brooksrunning.com/singletrack).Oladance - use code ST at this link (https://oladance.com/ST) to get $30 off the Oladance OWS2 headphones.Links:Follow Jennifer on Instagram, Personal Website, Pursuit of Endurance BookFollow Finn on Instagram, Strava, Twitter, Youtube, and PatreonSupport the show

Our guest today is not a part of the majority; he is the very definition of a small minority of athletes doing unfathomable feats. Today Kyle and I are sitting down with Jack Kuenzle, a former Navy Seal who grew up in Dallas Texas. Jack attended Yale receiving his B.A before he joined the Navy Seals and completed Basic Underwater Demolition Seals Training (BUDS). He is best known for his pursuit of FKT,s. Some of his accolades include Beating Killian Jornet's fastest known times on the 66 mile Bob Graham Round, a mountainous traverse around England's lake district. Moreover he beat Killiants FKT on Denali this past year, this is where Jack and I met. Heis also credited with numerous fastest known times such as Mt Whitney CA, Mt Shasta CA, Mt Hood and Mt Rainier to name a few. Additionally Jack is a coach for Evoke Endurance where he is under the tutelage of legendary Coach Scott Johston. In today's conversation we discuss Jack's history, what led him to be the athlete he is today, his training and nutrition and finally we discuss some of his major ascents, FKT's and what he plans to do in the future.Become a supporting member of The Climbing Majority to unlock the exclusive full length video of this episodePlease rate, review the show, and share this podcast with your friends. Liz Derstine is a musician, runner, writer, and as of 2020, a long-distance hiker. On July 7, 2020, she embarked on the life-altering adventure of through-hiking the 2,193-mile Appalachian Trail, as quickly as possible. Now, having had several years to reflect on this epic journey, Derstine tells her whole AT story: from what inspired her to want to hike the entirety of this daunting trail, to how it all went down, through to the many ways her life has changed as a result of transporting herself on foot, through the wilderness, from Georgia to Maine. At its core, this is a journey of self-discovery. Since her record-setting AT hike, Derstine has continued to embark on incredible multiday hiking adventures. She now holds many Fastest Known Time (FKT) records, including among others the Long Trail FKT for a self-supported woman. Most recently, on July 1, 2023, she set the FKT for a self-supported woman on the Via Alpina in Switzerland, finishing in just under seven days. Derstine currently lives and Boston, and when she's away from the trail, she is studying classical piano at the Longy School of Music at Bard College. Nick interviews Travis Soares. Travis is part of what Hardrath calls the "Rad Rag-Tag Bunch." He is no stranger to the FKT world. He has a laundry list of FKTs under his belt and it doesn't appear to be slowing down anytime soon. Travis holds the Fastest Known Time (FKT) for The SPS (Sierra Peak Section) List (247 Peaks in the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range). He completed the 247 mountains in 117 days, all on foot. We talk outdoors, what got him started, and why he does what he does while living the life of a true "Dirtbag." Lastly, we talk about his time with Nathan Longhurst (the youngest athlete to complete the SPS) while rooting him on and competing with and against him. Keri Wallace is the founder & guide at Girls on Hills, the UK's only trail, fell and skyrunning company for women. After her second child, Keri decided to quit the desk-job and find a way to combine her passion for mountain running with flexible working, so that she could fulfil a life goal and be mum to two toddlers at the same time. Keri in her own words: “I started Girls on Hills with my colleague Nancy Kennedy in 2013, as a way to encourage more women to try trail and fell running. It was a terrifying leap of faith and a dream-come-true rolled into one. It felt like the opposite of a mid-life crisis though; like I'd finally found the confidence to stand up and do something I should have done a long time ago. But I had no idea whether it would take off! We only ran a handful of courses the first year but it soon became clear that there was a real appetite out there for the kind of freedom and empowerment that comes with this type of running – across all ability levels. I love guiding women around the rocky hills of Glencoe, helping them build the confidence and skills they need to become more independent in the mountains (usually a simple case of revealing how much they are already capable of!) Mountain running is such a multi-faceted sport, with benefits that reach out and touch all other areas of your life. As Girls on Hills has grown over the years, we have learned more about the barriers that many women face, across all levels of our sport, from beginner access, right through to elite-level racing. Today we advocate strongly for equity and inclusivity and seek to increase female participation in technical and ultra-distance events, where the gender gap is greatest.” New episodes of the Tough Girl Podcast go live in March every Tuesday and Thursday at 7am UK time - Hit the subscribe button so you don't miss out. How to accomplish physical feats of endurance that many people have not with world leading ultra runner Adam Kiimble Adam Kimble is a professional ultra-trail runner, running coach, race director, motivational speaker, and amateur survivalist from Truckee, CA. He played Division-1 baseball at Bradley University prior to developing his passion for ultrarunning, and after graduation in the summer of 2009, he ran his first-ever 5k race near his hometown of Minooka, IL. The race resulted in terrible cramps and a lot of pain, but fortunately, it also came with a second-place age group finish! Once the pain subsided, Adam decided his racing days weren't done, and he trained to complete his first half marathon in 2011. After completing his first ultramarathon (50k) in 2014, the question became “what else is my body and mind capable of?” Following the Fastest Known Time (FKT) ever on the 171-mile Tahoe Rim Trail, a 60-day transcontinental crossing of the USA (2,500 miles), 60 days alone in the wilderness to become the winner of Discovery Channel's "The Wheel", seven podium finishes in 100-mile races, and a 31-day self-supported FKT across Great Britain (John o' Groats to Lands End + The Three Peaks), the limits are nowhere close to being reached.
33Fuel ambassador Damian is a record breaking ultra runner with credits to his name including a Top 5 finish at UTMB and many podium finishes at the world's biggest races. But it's his Fastest Known Time (FKT) records which really set him apart. He holds the FKT for the Paddy Buckley Round, the Cape Wrath trail and recently set a blistering record time on the Pennine Way, on which he covered the 268 miles (and 11,000m ascent) in just 61 hours. Damian uses his status as one of the world's best ultra runners his ultra achievements to voice his deep passion for the environment and climate change and ensures takes every action possible to minimise his carbon footprint.
