Today we share excerpts from “She's Beautiful When She's Angry,” a documentary filled with stories that still resonate today as women face new challenges around reproductive rights and sexual violence.  The documentary tells the stories of the activists of the Women's Liberation Movement that gained traction in the late 1960s and led to social and policy changes that set women on a path towards equality and reproductive justice. It also addresses the intersections of race and gender and the experiences of the Black women who were integral to this movement.  The film is about activists, those who inspire, organize, and revolutionize the world by changing the standards and broadening what we think is possible.  Learn more about the story and find the transcript on radioproject.org. Denise Oliver-Velez (1947-present) is a community organizer, professor, and writer whose work with the Young Lords and Black Panthers in New York City focused on the importance of feminist work within activist coalitions. David Waldman and Greg Dworkin welcome back Denise Oliver Velez, whose inestimable breadth and depth of experience, activism and legacy in racial, cultural and political affairs can illuminate our way out of Donald Trump’s morass. Denise visits KITM on Veterans Day, a subject she is also well-suited to address, as military service is a tradition in her family, notably her Tuskegee Airman father!  Today’s principal topic however, and probably the principal topic for America’s foreseeable future, is the Latiñe voting bloc, which can’t be reached with just a few spanish words, and is far from a single voting bloc, with regional, class, religious and racial differences driving their lives and their votes. Trump got out the Hispanic vote across the country by not taking them or their needs for granted. Nonetheless, Joe Biden won the presidency. Yes, indeed. It’s a slow-motion beat-down, folks. The biggest win for a challenger since FDR. In addition, a team of international observers found no systemic fraud in U.S. elections. The New York Times found no fraud. The AP says there’s no widespread fraud. There is nothing to see here... And, that is why Georgia is going to hand recount all of the votes — to build trust and respect (and watch Donald Trump lose twice). Meanwhile, the inaugural committee meets with only half of the members willing to say who’s being inaugurated.  The inauguration is set to be a mosh pit, half a million deep.

RadioPublic|LibSyn|YouTube|Patreon|Square Cash (Share code: Send $5, get $5!) Another beautiful morning shines over KITM 2020 Democratic Convention World Headquarters. Plenty of calamari left to share from last night, along with David Waldman, Greg Dworkin and a brand new guest!  Denise Oliver Velez pays close attention to a lot around here, and around the world. She would like everyone to do likewise, especially those in the mainstream media whose job it is to pay attention to the details, like Skee-Wee, and sweeping cultural and political history, such as the importance of African-American fraternities and sororities. For instance The Divine 9, amazingly enough might be confused with gang members if viewed in a misogynoir, or just plain ignorant light. If Denise’s mom were alive she would have voted for Hillary. Denise will be delighted to be voting for Kamala. Universities worked themselves into an absolutely impossible position where all choices lead to doom, even before COVID-19. Now they will have to take the students with them. One teacher in Georgia can’t fix all that Brian Kemp has done, but she comes close. If Donald Trump hadn’t come along, this year’s Democratic convention would not have been this great. This is the digital decency convention, a socially distancing big tent with no Colin Powell heckling, no Bill Clinton heckling, no Bernie-Biden or Biden-Bernie heckling! Foam hats and fingers were replaced by 57 backyards and plain speaking. Of course, there will also be some plain speaking at next week’s Gop convention. Laura Loomer would make a good keynote speaker, or maybe Mr. Pillow, or Miss Moscow. There’s a good 1,000 pages written already, by the Senate Intelligence Committee. There was no collusion, by the way. Putin did what he wanted, Trump let him. Plenty of lying to congress, with some light treason. As far as Trump’s and people like him are concerned, he’s innocent enough, until the handcuffs go on. Even after that, history will eventually smile upon them, like it does Nazis and Confederate soldiers. The rest of us can vote for Joe Biden. Most Americans are embarrassed by Trump’s response to coronavirus, the USPS… anything. Except for the time when he enabled Biden and Harris’ future protection of immigrants.

My live guest will be Sarah Seidman, Puffin Foundation Curator of Social Activism at the Museum of the City of New York, and curator of the museum’s present exhibition “Activist New York”. We also will go into our archive for an interview with Lucie Levine, Founder of Archive on Parade, who will discuss the women behind Brooklyn’s own suffrage movement in the 19th Century. (Brooklyn was its own municipality, separate from New York City until 1898!) Segment 1 The show begins with Jeff introducing the guest, Lucie Levine, who talks living in Brooklyn, continuing her story on how she entered the business she is working into now, having a love of history and being intrigued by the women’s suffrage movement in Brooklyn. Lucie gives a history of women’s suffrage, its roots lying all the back in the aftermath of the Civil War, outlining why Brooklyn would be the place where movements would be birthed, also noting the abolitionist history of the borough. She talks about a few key figures in the founding of Sorosis, focusing particularly on Celia M. Burleigh, including her founding of Brooklyn Women’s Club. Segment 2 Lucie talks about where the listener can find information for ‘Archive on Parade’. The conversation continues with the history of suffrage organizations formed for black women in Brooklyn. The talks steers towards Sarah J. Garnet and her founding of the Equal Suffrage League of Brooklyn, and her sister, Susan McKinney Steward, their history being from a family of trailblazers in African-American suffrage. Victoria Earle Matthew working her way into the conversation as well through a talk of intersectionality being birthed in the 19th century, the two talking about her founding of the White Rose Mission. The segment closes with an anecdote about a little known figure named, Cornelia K. Hood, the first women graduate of the NYU Law School and with the two talking about an interesting figure in the suffrage movement, Lucy Burns. Segment 3 Jeff introduces the second guest of the show, Sarah Seidman, who talks growing up in Boston and now living in New York City, and her decision to go into curating, joining the staff back in 2014. She reflects on an older exhibition, Beyond Suffrage, which outlines the history of the suffrage from 1917 to 2017, and a current exhibition, Activist New York, which covers a broader history of social activism in New York. The two talk about Mabel Ping-Hua Lee’s role in the suffrage movement and who pursued a larger suffrage goal when her right to vote came into conflict with the Chinese Exclusion Act. The segment closes with a brief discussion on the ‘Uprising of the 20,000’. Segment 4 Sarah talks about a few current exhibitions opening at Museum of the City of New York. The conversation continues with Belle Moskowitz’s and Pauli Murray’s parts in the suffrage and other social movements, naming more important figures as these movements persisted through the 20th century. They talk about a duo of living activists, Gloria Steinem and Dorothy Pitman Hughes, name-dropping important figures in more niche social movements in New York City like Denise Oliver-Velez and Sylvia Rivera. The show closes with Sarah giving out her website and promoting upcoming exhibitions.

18 September 2017 – Every time Denise Oliver-Velez is on our show I learn so much! This week we asked Denise to join us to cover what is happening in the Caribbean following Hurricane Irma. I particularly loved the posts Denise put up at Daily Kos on Puerto Rico and the history of the word “hurricane” as well as her thoughts on the subject. We spend most of our time on Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands, the places where Irma really did first make landfall in the US. (If you thought that was Florida you weren’t alone.) In our Lying Liar Lie of the Week segment Will talks about an attack against a trans woman during a protest at Speaker’s Corner in the UK. Fortunately, it was caught on video and Will walks us through it as well as posting the video and some stills here. In Lying Liar I talk for just a minute about Equifax who is making the obviously false statement that “they are doing everything they can.” This is clearly not the case and I’m quite sure we will be talking about them in the near future. In Will’s big block he talked about climate change, weather, alternate energy and politics. It’s appalling to think that the states which most need to confront new kinds of energy generation are fighting it the hardest. In my block I get into the profits being made by Facebook, Google and tech in general, to promulgate hate. The blood money tech companies are taking as they act as conduits for hate groups (and terrorism) is much more costly to society than it is profitable in annual reports. We simply must find an effective way to address this. And one more thing… In a special election, scheduled for 26 September, Florida State Senate candidate Annette Taddeo is facing an extreme get-out-the-vote (GOTV) challenge. She is running in District 40, which is Miami-Dade, and many of her prospective constituents are among those who had to evacuate. Flippable.org has identified this race as one which can be won but needs immediate help. Anything you can do would be appreciated. Carrots! – Arliss

14 November 2016 - As was said so beautifully by American civil rights lawyer and Sikh, Valerie Kaur, in her moving piece in the Washington Post following the white supremacist massacre of the Charleston Nine, she still felt optimism "Because today we mourn. Tomorrow we organize." Many of us are still spinning with emotions following the 8 November election we must take a breath to grieve, we must take care of ourselves, our families and our loved ones - and then we must organize. Fast. There is no time to waste. Our guest for the interview this week is Professor Denise Oliver-Velez (@DeOliver47). Denise's experience as a civil rights activist goes back to the Young Lords Party and the Black Panthers. Though she has won some, she has also lost many struggles and her perspective on losing and still moving forward seemed perfect for this time in our Party, our movement and our hearts. I begin the show talking about grief and making sure we are all clear that there is no "right" way to grieve. People will grieve in many different ways but the bottom line is that we are resilient. This too shall pass. I must say, however, I am done with being nice. I am finished with letting radical left purists, bigots, white supremacists, sexists and Confederate flag traitors, people who are the least among us, believe that I find them anything other than deplorable. I am through trying to reason with the irrational and the stupid. Consider this your pre-rant warning. Moving forward, I would like to see Rep. Keith Ellison become the new Chairman of the DNC. He would be a unifying voice and a much needed one. I am also going to invest my time in the coming Obama/Holder National Democratic Redistricting Committee project. I'm going to put my energy into getting rid of the incredibly harmful national gerrymander. This project begins with the 2017 elections in VA and NJ so again, time is of the essence. Will spends time talking about some reorganization within the Democratic Party and about the "we oppose everything" tactic which has served the GOP so well during the Obama administration. Will deeply believes that in addition to the important big tent work the Democratic Party has been doing to become increasingly more inclusive, some of that needs to be directed toward the specific and forgotten needs of rural (and by "rural" he does not mean just rural white) communities. He also brings into real focus the scam which masquerades as the American Green Party. He also pointed out that Donald Trump has a legitimacy problem, and no mandate, because Hillary Clinton got more votes than any presidential candidate in history with the exception of Barak Obama himself. As we all try to figure out for ourselves the best way to keep heart, I have to say one of the things which did me the most good this past week was the soothing and still hilarious "F*ck That: An Honest Meditation" on YouTube. I highly recommend it. Carrots! - Arliss

21 September 2015 - We survived the launch! It would have been better had it not taken us about eight hours to record the show only to later discover that we still had a strange audio problem in a couple of places but all-in-all we are still in one piece and we are downright hoppy with the result. It’s hard to be anything but thrilled with the end product because we had such a wonderful time talking with SUNY professor and Daily Kos feature writer, Denise Oliver-Velez. I think it’s obvious that Dee is basically a progressive rock star. She answered questions about hope, Puerto Rico, the Latino get-out-the-vote effort and education. I especially loved the conversation about the fact that the Moral Mondays platform and the Black Lives Matter platforms are putting forward issues that are not “new” which is contrary to the commentary by mainstream media. Dee, with her wealth of perspective on progressive movements closed out by commenting on the difference between getting out the word in the 1970s versus the social media of today but she was sure to say, “The revolution will be slogged, not blogged.” We make change by talking with one another directly. Will and I began the show talking a little bit about how we got started in the space that ultimately lead to “Hopping Mad.” We then went on to talk about the need for a new New Deal via job guarantee programs. So, here it is, the very first Hopping Mad…
