Well dear listener, it had to happen. After appearing with us separately on various podcasts, a long-time and genuine friend of the podcast - Too Hot for TV's Dylan Rees - joins BOTH of us to discuss the BBC television adaptation of Douglas Adams' THE HITCHHIKER'S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY on tonight's episode of ALTERNATE GALAXIES. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy aired between 5 January and 9 February 1981 on BBC2 in the United Kingdom. The adaptation follows the original radio series in 1978 and 1980, the first novel and double LP, in 1979, and the stage shows, in 1979 and 1980, making it the fifth iteration of the guide. The series stars Simon Jones as Arthur Dent, David Dixon as Ford Prefect, Mark Wing-Davey as Zaphod Beeblebrox, Sandra Dickinson as Trillian and Stephen Moore as the voice of Marvin. The voice of the guide is by Peter Jones.  Peter Jones, Simon Jones, Moore and Wing-Davey reprised their roles from the original radio series in 1978/80, as did supporting actors Richard Vernon and David Tate. In addition, the series features a number of notable cameo roles, including Adams himself on several occasions. This starts to get farcical - deliberately so - and the series has a rare event : a comedy death. And the victim of this hilarious murder has another claim to fame involving a Doctor Who historical. But never mind the historical, let's get hysterical thanks to Dennis Spooner, Derek Francis and everyone else conspiring to make this one of Doctor Who's most amusing near half hours. But will You Tuber extraordinaire Josh Snares be amused, and if so, will said amusement also tickle the funny bone of your host, Toby Hadoke?   Please support these podcasts on Patreon, where you will get advance releases, exclusive content (including a patron only podcast - Far Too Much information), regular AMAs and more. Dylan has brought today's main topic: 1960s Doctor Who writer, and sometime script editor, Dennis Spooner. The guys keep the discussion light, so anyone can tune in and learn a little about Dennis and his stories without feeling overwhelmed by someone they perhaps aren't familiar with, writing black and white television almost 60 years ago. Earlier in the year, Jeremy Bentham joined us on Something Who to chat about his long association with fandom, including his association with the Doctor Who Appreciation Society and his work on Doctor Who Magazine (or Weekly and Monthly as it was known then). Jeremy returns to talk with me about 4 figures who made the programme that he met in the early years of fandom, plus another who he wishes he had met. Along with his personal memories, we talk about the impact that Patrick Troughton, Douglas Camfield, Ian Scoones, Dennis Spooner and David Whitaker had on Doctor Who and its fandom. Another look at a super long stoy, but this time, unlike "The War Games," it's one neither Kyle nor Erik had seen (heard) before. Yep, the gents are back in the realm of Terry Nation for part two of our look at the Dalek creator with the massive 13-episode run comprising "Mission to the Unknown" and all of "The Daleks' Master Plan," on which he split writing duties with Dennis Spooner. And you know what? It shows! Companions, both pseudo and regular, get talked about extensively, as does whether the Daleks work in the context of old timey space opera. Or, for that matter, in any context at all. There's not even any real indication they even had a master plan to begin with.

And what does the tone of this story, in which broad farce is set alongside slavery and sexual assault, say about the way entertainment was viewed in the 1960s? All that and Sassy Hartnell too.  Main Topic: The Romans. A slow start. Introductions. Who is Vicki? Reading a Facebook comment. Production values in Classic Who. The Beatles on Who. Nero as Hedonism-bot. Slavery and rapeyness. Farce and rape. Pepe le Pew. Mel Brooks. Praise for Dennis Spooner. Slavery as a plot device. Where *not* to start with the recons. Badass Barbara and Blockhead Ian. We're never gonna win a Hugo. Barbara's empathy. Fisticuffs. "Sassy One." The Emperor's New Groove. "High Cartoon." Psychopathic Nero. Tone switching in 1960s TV. It might sound like an overstatement, but writer/script editor Dennis Spooner was one of the most important figures in the history of Doctor Who. He essentially created what is now referred to the "pseudo-historical", introduced comedy into Doctor Who as a more prominent feature, and basically created the many mannerisms of the Second Doctor, the characterization that would go on to influence all subsequent versions of The Doctor. In order to fully pay homage to Spooner, the Three Who Rule are joined by writer Graeme Burk, whose encyclopedic knowledge of Doctor Who and deep insight into Spooner's work makes this an enjoyable listen. Also discussed are some DVD releases to come in the next few months. Four Canadians blathering about Doctor Who in one podcast: how can you go wrong?
