Zdravo.

Frudi.

Well dear listener, it had to happen. After appearing with us separately on various podcasts, a long-time and genuine friend of the podcast - Too Hot for TV's Dylan Rees - joins BOTH of us to discuss the BBC television adaptation of Douglas Adams' THE HITCHHIKER'S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY on tonight's episode of ALTERNATE GALAXIES. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy aired between 5 January and 9 February 1981 on BBC2 in the United Kingdom. The adaptation follows the original radio series in 1978 and 1980, the first novel and double LP, in 1979, and the stage shows, in 1979 and 1980, making it the fifth iteration of the guide. The series stars Simon Jones as Arthur Dent, David Dixon as Ford Prefect, Mark Wing-Davey as Zaphod Beeblebrox, Sandra Dickinson as Trillian and Stephen Moore as the voice of Marvin. The voice of the guide is by Peter Jones. Peter Jones, Simon Jones, Moore and Wing-Davey reprised their roles from the original radio series in 1978/80, as did supporting actors Richard Vernon and David Tate. In addition, the series features a number of notable cameo roles, including Adams himself on several occasions. The trial of Robert Telles, a former Clark County public administrator accused of fatally stabbing investigative journalist Jeff German in 2022, entered its fifth day with critical evidence and testimony revealing the fraught relationship between the two men. On Thursday, prosecutors highlighted evidence found at Telles' home, which they believe ties him to the crime. Las Vegas Metropolitan Police detectives testified about the search that uncovered a hat and a pair of shoes matching those seen on the suspect in security footage on the day of German's murder. Notably, the shoes were partially destroyed, and the hat had been cut up, suggesting an attempt to conceal evidence. Defense attorney Robert Draskovich questioned the integrity of the evidence collection process, arguing that the search was poorly organized and potentially compromised by unauthorized access to key areas. He also scrutinized the amount of blood found at the crime scene, questioning the procedures followed by medical examiners. Friday's proceedings opened with forensic scientist Anastasia Barton, who testified about her analysis of fingernail samples from German's body, confirming they tested positive for blood. However, Barton noted that no DNA samples from Robert Telles were present during her examination. Draskovich's cross-examination focused on whether the samples were handled properly to ensure their integrity. Forensic scientist Melanie Koljenovic then took the stand, confirming that blood was found on items recovered from Telles' residence, including the shoes and the handle of a pair of scissors. However, pieces of the hat tested negative for blood. Draskovich pressed Koljenovic on the potential for false positives in blood tests, to which she acknowledged that substances like rust or animal blood could create misleading results. Forensic scientist Kimberly Dannenberger provided crucial testimony linking Telles to the crime scene through DNA evidence. She revealed that DNA samples from German's right-hand fingernail contained a mixture of profiles, including one that matched Telles. The prosecution used this evidence to further connect Telles to the murder, but the defense noted that Telles' DNA was not found on German's clothing or in other critical areas, such as a duffel bag believed to have been used by the suspect. Testimony from Daniel Kulan, a former colleague of German, shed light on the public records requests that may have exacerbated tensions between Telles and German. Kulan recounted how German had requested communications between Telles and Roberta Lee-Kennett, an estate coordinator in Telles' office, weeks before the killing. Telles was reportedly notified of these requests, which were routine in German's investigative work. Roberta Lee-Kennett provided gripping testimony about her interactions with Telles following German's death. She recalled receiving notification of the public information request regarding her communications with Telles but stated she wasn't initially concerned. However, she was deeply shaken upon learning of German's death over Labor Day weekend, saying, “That freaked me out.” Text messages between Lee-Kennett and Telles, shown in court, revealed her growing alarm. In one message, she urged Telles, “Rob … wtf … please do not be driving your Yukon around for awhile [sic].” Telles responded, “Woah. That's crazy.” When Lee-Kennett asked if his Yukon matched the suspect vehicle, Telles confirmed it was "similar if not the same." Despite her continued concerns, Telles maintained, “It's fine. I didn't do it,” but acknowledged that his vehicle closely resembled the one seen in connection with the crime. The prosecution questioned Lee-Kennett about her installation of the Trillian app, which allows text messages to disappear. She confirmed that Telles had asked her to install the app. The court then took a recess before the defense's cross-examination. Upon reconvening, Draskovich questioned Lee-Kennett about the turmoil in the public administrator's office, focusing on changes Telles had implemented that disrupted existing practices, particularly concerning third-party vendors profiting from deceased individuals' properties. Lee-Kennett agreed that Telles had "upset the apple cart" by challenging these practices. When asked if she was concerned about the public records request filed by German, Lee-Kennett stated she worried primarily about vendors discovering the office's dissatisfaction with them or that confidential information might be exposed. She also testified that she did not initially identify Telles as the suspect in the police video and did not recognize his gait. Moreover, she emphasized that Telles never admitted to being involved in German's death. As the trial continues, more key witnesses are expected to testify, while the defense will likely keep challenging the evidence linking Telles to the crime. The trial, anticipated to last two weeks, is under intense public and media scrutiny as it unfolds. Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? Photographer and writer Kyle Cassidy and actor and model Trillian Stars join us for a Bonus Episode to talk about their new Kickstarter, THIS IS ONLY EARTH, MY DEAR – POEMS & PHOTOS (closing May 4, 2024)! We get into their inspiration to make a book combining the poems of Pre-Raphaelite muse/model/artist Elizabeth Eleanor Siddal with photos of Trillian (in a Pre-Raphaelite mode), how the project changed once they began shooting in East London, how they found enough costumes for all the photos they wanted to take, why Lizzie Siddal was dismissed by the peers of her husband, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, and how modeling and acting overlap and differ (and why Kyle prefers shooting with actors). We also get into what they've learned from nearly a dozen Kickstarters, what stretch goals they're hoping to reach for this one, and why they want to give Lizzie Siddal the book she never got when she was alive. This week we return to the universe of the Hitchhiker's Guide as we discuss the sequel The Restaurant at the End of the Universe by Douglas Adams. Host: Dr. Nic Hoffmann Panel: Mike Burns and Mike Carroll "Now celebrating the 42nd anniversary of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy," “Douglas Adams is a terrific satirist.”—The Washington Post Book World Facing annihilation at the hands of the warlike Vogons? Time for a cup of tea! Join the cosmically displaced Arthur Dent and his uncommon comrades in arms in their desperate search for a place to eat, as they hurtle across space powered by pure improbability. Among Arthur's motley shipmates are Ford Prefect, a longtime friend and expert contributor to The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy; Zaphod Beeblebrox, the three-armed, two-headed ex-president of the galaxy; Tricia McMillan, a fellow Earth refugee who's gone native (her name is Trillian now); and Marvin, the moody android. Their destination? The ultimate hot spot for an evening of apocalyptic entertainment and fine dining, where the food speaks for itself (literally). Will they make it? The answer: hard to say. But bear in mind that The Hitchhiker's Guide deleted the term “Future Perfect” from its pages, since it was discovered not to be! “What's such fun is how amusing the galaxy looks through Adams's sardonically silly eyes.”—Detroit Free Press" - From the Del Rey back cover.
Zdravo.

We're having a chat about characters that differ from the source material and turn out crap because of it. Characters where the people adapting them didn't care, understand, or even take time to read the original stuff because they thought they knew better. There are a lot of instances where characters are adapted from source material and get totally messed up because the writers either don't understand or care about the source material they're taking from. Were not talking about being exactly true to a book, we're talking about understanding and respecting the characters so you can translate them to another medium and still have them recognisable and be themselves. There are many examples of poor character translation… apparently this is what happened with The Witcher in the 3rd season of the show. The story is that the led actor, Henry Cavil is a fan of the character from the books and games and took exception to the character's dilution and sidelining as the series progressed. We've been told that the writers for the show would openly laugh at the source material, something they're not really qualified to do since even the well regarded first series is extremely badly written and only gets the praise it does because of Cavel's portrayal of the lead character. An example that's very near and dear to me is the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy movie. This is a sort of a special case since the author had SOME involvement in it before he died but not enough apparently. the characters of Arthur Dent as played by Martin Freeman and Ford Prefect by Mos Def are terrible interpretations, so much so that they end up actively damaging the movie and harming the story. The essence of Arthur's character is a bemused, suburban British superiority: He has an expectation that as a British citisen his rights should be respected, his opinion should be listened to, people should understand his language, and things should conform to his suburban understanding of what is normal and good, all this is signaled by his wearing of Pajamas, a dressing gown and slippers the whole time. Whereas Martin Freeman's version simply doesn't understand what he's seeing and goes through the whole movie with an affronted frown on his stupid face. This is absolutely incorrect! Rather than not understanding anything Arthur is suppose to believe that he understands everything, but only in simple, suburban British terms,so that he can go through the story with a sense of befuddled superiority. Ford Prefect is supposed to be cool. He's easy going, and just meshes with whatever situation he's in, even if he doesn't understand it. He's very smart and quick to adapt. Mos Def's version is just a moron who looks good. All that said,Sam Rockwell's version of Zaphod was more perfect than perfect, and Zoe Dashenell was perfectly fine as Trillian, but that character was never ever written well to begin with in the original. What characters do you think with translated poorly in an adaption? Adam West's Batman? Hernry Cavil's Superman? Who? Don't Panic“Hitchhiker's by its very nature has always been twisty and turny, and going off into every direction. A film demands a certain shape and discipline that the material just isn't inclined to fit into.”This is a quote by Douglas Adams, creator and writer of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Despite his (and many others') opinion that the material was mostly harmless (and unfilmable!), Adams was adamant for the big screen adventures of Arthur Dent, Ford Prefect, Zaphod Beeblebrox, Trillian and Marvin, after successful BBC radio and TV series, and stage shows.A movie version of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy was originally mooted in 1982, which would never materialise, but it led to Adams' relaxation of the idea that all his characters must be British, and Adams was fully involved throughout writing the screenplay. The project was resurrected in early 2001 by director Jay Roach, and once again Douglas Adams would write the screenplay, adding new material and insisting only Arthur needed to be British... Adams' sudden death in May 2001 left the producers with two options: say "So long, and thanks for all the fish", or "Don't panic" and carry on with the movie Douglas Adams so desperately wanted to see...I would love to hear your thoughts on The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (2005) !CONTACT.... On June 12th, 2023, actor Treat Williams passed away in Vermont in a motorcycle accident. He had been a Hollywood mainstay having been a supporting actor in many big budget films. At times he was a leading man as well, and in 1998 he starred in the horror film DEEP RISING. Dark Discussions has decided to pay tribute to his life by reviewing the film.Captain John Finnegan (Treat Williams) leads a crew that takes on whatever job is needed. When a group of mercenaries hire him, he founds out that their target is an ocean liner. On the cruise ship, Trillian (Famke Janssen), a guest on the boat, is arrested by the crew for pickpocketing. When a mysterious creature attacks the ocean liner, Trillian, a handful of survivors, and the mercenaries try their best to survive.DEEP RISING, though a critical flop, has gained a large cult following over the years. Written and directed by the prolific Stephen Sommers, the movie was an opportunity to allow Williams and Janssen a chance to become A-list starts. Though their careers didn't advance as much as some thought, they both have had a long and lustrous career. Rest in peace, Treat Williams. Your co-hosts give their thoughts.

Zdravo.

The final eleven and a half minutes of Quintessential Phase flipped everything on its head. So much so that Jeff and Bryan decided to devote an entire episode to it.This has been a Froods for Thought production.
Jeff and Bryan discuss Quintessential Phase, the fifth installment of the BBC radio series. This one is based off the book Mostly Harmless. Unlike the first two radio series, which were original productions, this one, like the third and fourth, is adapted from the existing material. Jeff and Bryan will discuss and debate this adaptation... until the end where they had to hit pause and digest what they just heard. This has been a Froods for Thought production.

It has been said about this series of books that it can be inconsistent and contradictory. Like they did after The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, The Restaurant at the End of the Universe, Life, the Universe and Everything, and So Long and Thanks for All the Fish, Jeff is going ask Bryan to clarify some of the questions he had after reading Mostly Harmless. This has been a Froods for Thought production.

Thor and Wowbagger have had their epic showdown, which has left Wowbagger soaring up into the stratosphere of Nano after a spectacular uppercut from Mjölnir. However, it rather seems that Bowerick Wowbagger was having serious second thoughts about ending his immortality, as he and Trillian have very deeply fallen in love. It would seem.Arthur meanwhile is trying his very best to not be quite so damnably gauche and, well, English about everything.Things DO seem to be a bit of a pickle, eh?Show your love and keep this podcast alive - and get access to patron-only and ad-free content - become a patron on https://patreon.com/thebeardedwitAlternatively, you can make a one-off donation on https://supporter.acast.com/the-gigglefix-podcast#dontpandemic #dontpanic #hitchhikersguidetothegalaxy #hhgttg #hitchhikersguide #douglasadams #fortytwo #lifetheuniverseandeverything #arthurdent #fordprefect #zaphodbeeblebrox #trillian #marvin #paranoidandroid #thehitchhikersguide #thehitchhikersguidetothegalaxy #hg2gSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/the-bearded-wit.
