Podcast appearances and mentions of star beast

This show has been flagged as Clean by the host. Heinlein wrote a series of books under contract to Scribners that were aumed at younger readers, pre-teen and teen. Today we would call them Young Adult, but back then they were called Juveniles. But even an adult reader can enjoy many of these books. Because they were aimed at younger readers, he could not always be as explicit as he might have liked, but if you pay attention you just might noticed he slipped in something subversive. Heinlein: The Juveniles As a boy I read voraciously. I remember my mother organizing weekly trips to the town library, where I would load up on books, and I quickly became focused on Science Fiction, along with the usual stuff kids read, like the Hardy Boys, Tom Swift, and the Walter Farley horse books. But the idea of going into space grabbed me very early. And one of the first authors I read was Heinlein. He had taken a leave from publishing during World War II, when he was doing research at the Philadelphia Navy Yard. But when the war was over, he set out to move beyond the “pulps” and expand the market for his stories. And one big market for him was what were called “juveniles” at the time, and would today be called “Young Adult”. I was reading adult fiction by the time I was 11 or 12, but before that (and even after that, in fact) I read these Heinlein novels with great relish. Heinlein's target audience for these novels was teenage boys. He did a few stories aimed at girls, but mostly he wrote for boys. And these were mostly “coming of age” stories where the teenage protagonist has adventures, and as a result grows and develops. They are very loosely related via some internal references, but should really be thought of as stand-alone stories. They also in some cases have references to his other stories, including the Future history stories. He wrote 13 of these novels, one per year, from 1947 to 1959. The series was published by Scribners until the last one was rejected by them. Heinlein then published it with a different publisher, and stopped writing these novels altogether in favor of more adult fiction. The novels roughly form a progression telling the story of space exploration. It starts with a trip to the Moon, then Venus, Mars, Jupiter's moon, and so on until we reach the Lesser Magellanic Cloud. Rocket Ship Galileo (1947) – While readable, this initial effort was not up to Heinlein's later standards. The plot concerns three teenagers who assist an uncle to build a rocket ship and go to the Moon. When they get there they discover Nazis have already arrived. The Nazis try to kill the group, but they succeed in turning the tables, stealing the Nazi ship, and returning to Earth as heroes. This novel became the basis (loosely) for the movie Destination Moon (1950), and I personally would consider the movie to be superior to the novel. It is also worth noting that the theory brought up in Blowups Happen reappears in this novel. They find evidence of an ancient Lunar civilization that was destroyed, and theorize that the craters on the moon were caused by the explosion of nuclear reactors that caused the extinction of the civilization. Space Cadet (1948) – This was in part the inspiration for the Tom Corbett franchise, which licensed the name Space Cadet from Heinlein. It is about a young man who is accepted to the Academy for the Space Patrol. It follows him through his education in the Academy, and then into his first mission after graduating. This holds up better than the previous novel. And it is tied back to the story The Long Watch from the Future History. Part of the story takes place on an inhabited Venus that is cloudy and swampy. Red Planet (1949) – This is set on Mars, as it is also portrayed in Stranger In A Strange Land (1961). Mars is inhabited by native Martians, but also by human colonists. It has the canals, and with seasonal changes the colonists migrate from north to south and back. A pair of teenage boys get caught up in a revolution when the evil corporation that controls the colony pushes the colonists too far. In the end you wish there really were canals and Martians. Farmer In The Sky (1950) – This is one of the best, as seen by the Retro Hugo this novel won in 2000. Jupiter's moon Ganymede is being terraformed because Earth is overcrowded and food is rationed. A teenage boy and his family emigrate to Ganymede and try to make a life there, which they eventually succeed in doing. The Green Hills of Earth is mentioned here, tying this into the future History. There are frequent references to the Boy Scouts, due to the fact that the story ran as a serial in Boy's Life magazine. Between Planets (1951) – A teenage boy is caught up in interplanetary intrigue. Venus and Mars have colonies, but Earth is trying to control them too much. So revolution is on the menu. This is clearly patterned in the colonial wars of the 18th and 19th centuries, such as the American Revolution against England. By this point the so-called “Juveniles” are really having more adult content, and reviewers re starting to rate them in comparison with adult science fiction. This novel was also first serialized in Boy's Life magazine. The Rolling Stones (1952) – Here we have teenage twin boys, Castor and Pollux, as the protagonists. They and their family live on the Moon, but decide to travel, so this novel is a kind of travelogue as they go to Mars, then to the Asteroid belt. The grandmother, Hazel Stone, appears in Heinlein's later works as well. One interesting episode in this story involves “martian flat cats”, which are furry, lovable, and reproduce like mad with the right conditions. If this sound like Star Trek's Tribbles, that is also what the Star Trek producers thought, so they got permission from Heinlein to use the idea. Starman Jones (1953) – We are now further into the future, and the human race is exploring the stars. Unfortunately, very restrictive guilds closely control who can participate in this. A teenage boy named Max, who happens to have an eidetic memory, has memorized the Astrogation tables from his uncle's books, and wants to join the Guild, but is turned down. He lies his way onboard a ship, and through a series of events becomes the only one who can guide the ship home. The Star Beast (1954) – A teenage boy has an alien “pet” his great-grandfather had brought back that has grown very large, and is considered a nuisance. A court decides the beast must be killed, but that proves easier to say than to do. It appears that the beast isn't even aware that people are trying to kill it. Meanwhile, a powerful and hitherto unknown alien species demand the return of one of their own, or they will destroy the Earth. Of course, it is this beast, who is actually royalty to the alien species. One interesting point is that government officials in this story are portrayed sympathetically as intelligent and dedicated. Tunnel In The Sky (1955) – In the future humanity is colonizing other planets, and a group of teenagers are taking their final survival test. They are sent to a planet and told that they have to survive for 10 days, But more than 10 days go by with no pickup, and they know something went wrong. So they have to establish their own little society to keep surviving. An interesting note is that the protagonist, Rod Walker, is black. It was never explicitly stated in the text, but Heinlein was firm in stating this. The clue is when the others expect Rod to end up with Caroline, who is explicitly stated to be black. This was Heinlein being subtly subversive. To have a black protagonist for a boy's story in 1955 in America would be impossible. but Heinlein was completely anti-racist, among other things. Time For The Stars (1956) – This is a novel that takes Relativity seriously, which was not common in the 1950s. Researchers have discovered that some twins and triplets can communicate telepathically (and instantaneously), and so when a group of ships is sent out to explore other star systems, one twin is on the ship and the other remains on Earth to provide communication. The twin on Earth ages must faster than the one in space, of course, and eventually the Earth twin dies, But they discover that the connection sometimes passes down through the family, so the protagonist, Tom Bartlett, becomes connected first to his niece, then his grandniece, and finally his great-grandniece. Citizen of the Galaxy (1957) – This book is about a future slave trade, which Heinlein strongly hated. The protagonist is a boy who is bought at a slave auction by an old beggar, but the beggar is more than he seems. He is actually spying and gathering data regarding the slave trade. When discovered, he commits suicide, but he had prepared the young boy, Thorby, who then contacts the Free Traders who spirit him away. He has to adapt to this new society, but then is delivered to the Hegemonic Guard. It turns out his “father” (i.e. the man who bought him) was an officer in this organization. And when they run the background checks, they discover that he is the heir to a large conglomerate, and that conglomerate may be implicated in the slave trade. Have Space Suit—Will Travel (1958) – Clifford “Kip” Russell dreams of going to the Moon, and enters a contest with that as the top prize. Unfortunately, he wins the somewhat lesser prize of a used spacesuit. The first few chapters focus on him doing repairs and maintenance to make it functional again, and this displays Heinlein's engineering background. It is more engaging than you might think. Then while wearing the spacesuit he receives a radio message, and he is kidnapped along with an alien called “The Mother Thing” and a young girl who is a genius. The kidnappers are a group of aliens who consider anyone not of their race to be animals. The trio first try to escape on the Moon, but are recaptured, then taken to Pluto, where they succeed in killing the alien kidnappers. Then they are taken to the Lesser Magellanic Cloud to be put on trial to determine if the human race should be allowed to live. Starship Troopers (1959) – This is the novel that Scribners rejected, and which brought the Juvenile series to an end. And it bears absolutely no resemblance at all to the movie, to the point that for Heinlein fans the word Verhoeven is considered an obscenity. A young man, Juan “Johnny” Rico joins the military, where he has to grow up and then take part in a war against an insectoid race, but that is all background really. The book is primarily a glorification of military service, which is not surprising given Heinlein's background. And it focuses on a series of discussions under the heading of “History and Moral Philosophy”, which lets Heinlein expound on his values and beliefs. The novel won a Hugo, but it is an add one given that the plot is secondary to the philosophizing. One of the most controversial ideas is that in this society the right to vote is limited to people who have been in Federal Service. Heinlein said this didn't have to be military, but the only ones we see are in fact military veterans. So, these are the Heinlein Juveniles. In my opinion, many of them are quite good reading for adults. The thing that separates them from adult novels in Heinlein's body of work is the lack of any sex element. That would become prominent in Heinlein's later adult novels, but it was not something you could put in a book aimed at teenagers, certainly not in the 1950s, and arguably the case today as well. A seemingly minor dispute over which union controlled the operation of an elaborate clock on the BBC Children's Program, Play School, escalated to the point where production of Doctor Who came to a standstill. Two-thirds of filming had been completed. Sets were built. Effects work had been shot. Actors had been cast. And then everything stopped. The cast wasn't aware of what was happening behind the scenes—some didn't even know production had ceased until much later. Meanwhile, writer Douglas Adams had already decided to step away from the show. He wouldn't be returning. The Lost Story That Became Many Stories Because Shada was never completed in 1980, it exists in five different forms today. A 1983 fan edit using rough footage and text inserts. A 1992 VHS release with Tom Baker providing narration for the unfinished scenes. A Big Finish Flash animation from 2013 that reimagined the story. An unofficial animation created before the official version. And finally, a 2021 Blu-ray restoration with enhanced animation presented in proper episode format. But none of these versions represent what Douglas Adams might have intended, because the original script—if it still exists—has never been published. The editing, the changes, the additions made over decades remain mysterious. What Was Filmed, What Wasn't, and Why Some Special Effects Exist for No Good Reason One of the most fascinating aspects of watching Shada is understanding what the production achieved before the strike. All the Cambridge location footage—the punting scenes, the exterior shots of the university, Tom Baker riding a bicycle—was shot first. The interior sets at the professor's rooms were next. But the spaceship interiors? Those were never filmed, because the production never got far enough. Yet special effects models of both spaceships were built and filmed specifically for a story that would never be completed. The Krog robots, partial shots of spacecraft, miniature effects work all survived despite the rest of production falling apart. It's a window into how Doctor Who production actually worked: film everything outdoor or on location first, then work studio interiors later. A Woman Transformed, A Doctor Leaving, and a Show About to Change Everything Tom Baker—at this point no longer interested in playing the Doctor again—was paired with Lala Ward (as Romana II). Their relationship during this period was becoming increasingly strained (they would eventually marry and divorce, an 18-month union that left permanent scars). Meanwhile, Graham Williams—the outgoing producer—was frustrated that the BBC wouldn't fund the show properly. He could only get two-thirds of the budget needed. He suggested his replacement: John Nathan Turner, a producer with big ideas and bigger ambitions. Turner would bring in Christopher Bidmead as script editor—someone determined to ground the show in actual science and move away from what he considered silliness. Bidmead would also cherry-pick which parts of established continuity "counted," declaring entire seasons from the past to be non-canonical. This era would define everything that came next. Cambridge, Tea, and a Story About Wanting to Create a Universal Mind The story itself involves a professor of Gallifrey, secret books, a man named Skagra with mysterious plans, and a prison planet that the Time Lords conveniently forgot about. But at its heart, it's a tale about someone trying to merge multiple consciousnesses into a single universal mind—a concept that resonates strangely in an era of AI debates decades later. The Doctor opposes this not through violence, but through philosophy, engaging in a debate about why controlling the universe isn't actually desirable. It's quintessentially Douglas Adams: ambitious ideas wrapped in humor and logic puzzles. Guest Stars Both Familiar and Forgotten Gerald Campion, who played the original Billy Bunter decades earlier, appears in a small role. Tom Baker was thrilled to work with him. Christopher Neame plays the villain Skagra in a distinctly disco-era outfit that suggests the production was made in a very specific time period. Most of the cast has been forgotten by history—which is what makes it tragic. These actors prepared for a major Doctor Who story that would have been seen by millions. Instead, they prepared for something that was erased. Romana in Costume, or Rather, in Multiple Costumes One thread that becomes increasingly frustrating as the story progresses: Romana keeps changing outfits, and none of them seem quite right. There's a hat situation that neither host is happy about. But the core problem goes deeper—Romana, one of the Doctor's most capable companions, spends large stretches of this story being dragged around, held hostage, or forced to watch as events happen around her. It's a companion written with less agency than the show had managed before. A Mystery at the End: What Was Douglas Adams Actually Trying to Say? The final revelation that Professor Cronotus is actually Salyavin—a famous criminal from Shada prison—raises questions that the story never adequately addresses. He's dead, sort of. He's a paradox, sort of. He creates a companion (Claire) who suddenly understands alien technology without explanation. And then the Doctor simply... leaves. Leaves a TARDIS on Earth with an unstable former criminal who's slowly fading from existence. No one discusses what will happen. No one seems concerned. By the final episodes, the story becomes increasingly muddled, introducing concepts that don't quite land and resolutions that feel incomplete. Which Version Did They Watch? And Does It Matter? The hosts watched the 2021 Blu-ray restoration, broken into six episodes with enhanced animation. But the question lingers: is this Douglas Adams's original story, or has it been altered beyond recognition by decades of reconstruction? The animation is competent but uneven. Tom Baker's and Lala Ward's aged voices are notably different from their younger selves. David Briarley, the original voice of K9's computer, recorded new material shortly before his death. A final scene was added showing Tom Baker as an older man—was this always planned, or a later addition? A Story in Cotton Candy Form One host describes Shada as "cotton candy science fiction"—tasty in the moment, completely gone the moment you consume it. The question becomes: how much of the fascination with Shada is about the story itself, and how much is about its impossible history? Had it been completed on schedule and aired as just another season finale, would anyone still talk about it? Or is the legend of Shada more interesting than Shada actually is?     from tardi wiki   was the eighth and final episode of Series 15 of Doctor Who. It premiered on 31 May 2025. The story featured the return of Omega in an active role as an antagonist for the first time since the Fifth Doctor story Arc of Infinity [+], now voiced by Nicholas Briggs, with this story revealing Omega's time spent trapped in the Under-Universe had physically altered and deformed him into a monstrous corpse like being. The story also shows the apparent fate of the bi-generated Rani at Omega's hands, while the Mrs Flood incarnation of the Rani escapes shortly after witnessing her successor's apparent demise. The Rani reveals how she survived the Spy Master's genocide of Gallifrey, and that the genetic explosion caused by the Spy Master had rendered any surviving Time Lords and Time Ladies completely sterile, which was why she enacted her plan to find Omega in order to save their race, though with the purpose of creating a new Gallifrey she could rule over. In addition, her ability to follow the Doctor throughout time and space is revealed to be accomplished by use of a Time Ring rather than a TARDIS. Steph de Whalley also returns as Anita Benn, where it's revealed she began working in the Time Hotel after Joy to the World [+] and had been looking for the Fifteenth Doctor, in doing so archive footage from The Wedding of River Song [+] and Day of the Daleks [+] respectfully would be used to have Anita see the Eleventh and Third Doctors when visiting the events of those stories, before archive footage of Rogue [+] is used when Anita finds an early version of the Fifteenth Doctor during the events of that story. Before departing, Anita would mention "the Boss" who was previously mentioned by Beep the Meep in The Star Beast [+]. In addition to the Doctor's previous incarnations appearing through archive footage, Jodie Whittaker makes a surprise appearance as the Thirteenth Doctor near the end of this story, marking her first appearance since The Power of the Doctor [+]. Most notably, this story was the final chronological appearance of Ncuti Gatwa as the Fifteenth Doctor, with the story ending with his regeneration, caused by him sacrificing his current incarnation in order to bring Poppy back into existence, the Doctor's regeneration in this story was also the first time since The Parting of the Ways [+] in 2005 that the Doctor had regenerated at the end of the current series; in the revived run of the series, starting from The End of Time [+] up to The Giggle [+], the Doctor would be seen regenerating in either Christmas or New Year's specials set in between numbered series. In a twist however, The Reality War and the Fifteenth Doctor's regeneration would end with Billie Piper, having previously portrayed Ninth and Tenth Doctor companion Rose Tyler, being introduced in the final moments of the story, and with her role being left uncredited. Worldbuilding Omega and the Rani The Doctor reveals that Omega is viewed as the Original Sin of the Time Lords who has discovered time travel. He was cast out from Gallifrey because he was insane. Omega has two hearts like all Time Lords. The Underverse is a world of legends, causing Omega to change into the Mad God Titan and become his own legend. After his escape, Omega wanted to become the God of Time and feast upon Time Lords. He also immediately recognises the Doctor. The Rani has her own Time Ring and Sonic Screwdriver. The Mrs. Flood Rani later escapes with the Time Ring. UNIT Susan Triad has build her own Zero Room at UNIT floor minus 10 to use as an escape pod. UNIT can also fight using Parallax Cannons. There are a few glitches in the new world: the border between Norway and Sweden has moved seven miles east. The colour teal is more blue and actor Ernest Borgnine is still alive. Belinda and her family Belinda mentions she has an uncle named Roo living in Kerala. Her mother's name is Lakshmi. She plays a concert in Manchester. Belinda wanted to see the planet Neptune and the Big Bang before departing from the Doctor. Belinda makes the Doctor an uncle to Poppy. She reveals she met Poppy's real father when she was 21 and is named Ritchie Akingbola, though they are separated. Ruby and her family Ruby mentions that during their time together, Conrad never revealed who his father is. Cherry reveals that she likes to play poker and that Joseph is the name of her late husband. The Doctor and the TARDIS The Fifteenth Doctor mentions he can turn the TARDIS into anything. The Doctor has never been to Kerala. He also reveals that in the year 60,000, there is a planet called New New Delhi. The Fifteenth Doctor can punch regeneration energy from his hands into the Time Vortex to alter reality. However this causes him to regenerate. He can still stall the regeneration itself for a short time. The Thirteenth Doctor is unaware of what bi-generation is. The Thirteenth Doctor mentions the TARDIS having "a third strand of phenotype markers that can turn a micro-spasm". Both Doctors hope that they will always wish they had more time before regenerating. The TARDIS remembers the Fugitive Doctor, revealing her on the TARDIS console screen between the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Doctors. The Fifteenth Doctor is surprised to see the Thirteenth, joking that "normally the other guy shows up". References The Doctor gives The Upside Down from Stranger Things and Narnia as examples about the world hidden below, or "the Underverse". Notes Jodie Whittaker revealed that one of her regrets from her tenure was that she didn't get to interact with Peter Capaldi or David Tennant during the regeneration handovers, as their scenes were filmed separately. So getting to interact with Ncuti Gatwa during his own regeneration handover was special and a highlight of coming back for her cameo. A promotional image of the Doctor and Belinda dancing with a "Happy May Day" banner in the background was released for the episode, but no such scene exists in the final episode. Jodie Whittaker wore a wig for her cameo, as she had long brown hair at the time. Russell T Davies revealed that Jodie Whittaker's codename onset was "Petrol", because he might use it as a companion name in the future. This two-parter formed Block Five of Series 15.

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy aired between 5 January and 9 February 1981 on BBC2 in the United Kingdom. The adaptation follows the original radio series in 1978 and 1980, the first novel and double LP, in 1979, and the stage shows, in 1979 and 1980, making it the fifth iteration of the guide. The series stars Simon Jones as Arthur Dent, David Dixon as Ford Prefect, Mark Wing-Davey as Zaphod Beeblebrox, Sandra Dickinson as Trillian and Stephen Moore as the voice of Marvin. The voice of the guide is by Peter Jones.  Peter Jones, Simon Jones, Moore and Wing-Davey reprised their roles from the original radio series in 1978/80, as did supporting actors Richard Vernon and David Tate. In addition, the series features a number of notable cameo roles, including Adams himself on several occasions. ILY All!Today I'm honored to introduce to you: Catholic church, Knights of St Columba, and organized ritual, systemic and secular abuse survivor and whistleblower, published author and writer, creator and first editor of long-running British comic 2000AD, devoted husband to his supportive wife Lisa, yogi, cycler, and table tennis player, blogger, and a hero on a mission to expose organized clerical abuse and neo-Masonic sexual abusive crimes of the Catholic laity: Patrick MillsPatrick is the son of a devout, pour, Catholic widow and became a target to his abuse from a young age. He was indentured into the Catholic Church - which is different than baptism - and was in his 40's when memories of sexual child abuse surfaced. These forms of abuse took three forms: The first was: Organized ritual abuse within the Church and through The Knights of St Columba - who are the British equivalent of the USA Knights of Columbus. This form of abuse had elements of satanic ritual abuse. The second form was ‘Organized systemic abuse' that occurred within the Church and the Catholic College he attended, and the third form was ‘Organized secular abuse'. These three forms of abuse overlapped throughout Patrick's childhood. When he recovered his memories in the 90s, the British False Memory Society was at its most powerful - copying the American equivalent which we all know of as the False Memory Syndrome Foundation. Both foundations are now allegedly defunct. It was only when Patrick discovered the proven cases of recovered memory in the United States - such as the famous Frank Fitzpatrick vs Father James Porter case - that he realized his memories were valid.Patrick believes Catholic Canon Law is the likely cause of Catholic child sexual abuse as it provides a license to abuse. Patrick has been offered apologies from the Church, the Knights, and a national investigation from his old College. His research has led him to find through academic studies that clerical abuse is transgenerational and is likely to still be current. He believes the Church is operating a damage limitation exercise, acknowledging - but not pursuing - the crimes involved. Patrick is also the creator and first editor of the long-running British comic 2000AD and developed Judge Dredd - which has been made into two movies. Key graphic novels he has written include the internationally acclaimed, anti-war series “Charley's War”, exposing the real truth about the First World War, “Nemesis” - a science fiction, futuristic critique of the Catholic Church, “Slaine” – about the High King of Ireland and celebrating a victory of the matriarchy over the patriarchy, and “Third World War” – about how multinational food companies oppress the people of South America.His other writing credits include “Marshal Law” (used in Marvel and D.C. Comics), which is an extremely hostile look at super heroes, “Accident Man”, about a deep state assassin, made into two movies starring Scott Adkins, “Requiem Vampire Knight” – which is a 12 volume series about famous people sent to Hell, and “Batman Book of Shadow”. Patrick's story, “The Star Beast” was also adapted as the anniversary celebration story and first episode of the recent relaunch of the Doctor Who TV series, starring David Tennant.Patrick also has a blog that has resulted in the sacking of the head of a religious teaching order  - which is the equivalent of an arch bishop here in the US, the recent arrest of one of his Catholic abusers at the age of 90, apologies on the table for three dead abuser Catholic priests, apology for the crimes of the Knights of St Columba, and a national investigation into the crimes of a religious teaching order at his old college.CONNECT WITH PATSupport the show
