RUSH electrophysiologists treat patients with atrial fibrillation through a number of pharmacologic, non-surgical and surgical approaches, while also helping them modify risk factors to slow down progression of this chronic disease. Our providers treat newly diagnosed, paroxysmal, persistent and permanent atrial fibrillation. RUSH clinicians coordinate patients' care before, during and after treatment, tailoring a multidisciplinary treatment plan that specifically meets their needs. Dr. Erica Engelstein is an electrophysiologist in the RUSH University System for Health and an expert in treating atrial fibrillation. Her clinical interests include evaluation and treatment of patients with suspected or documented arrhythmias, including catheter ablation of atrial fibrillation and ventricular tachycardia. “Some patients are best managed with rate control and anticoagulation so that we don't expose those patients unnecessarily to an invasive procedure. However, if the chances of restoring and maintaining a normal heart rhythm are good--and a lot of patients fit that profile--then they may be better managed with a more aggressive approach including catheter ablation.” CME Link: https://cmetracker.net/RUSH/Publisher?page=pubOpenSub#/event/488912/

Lisa Campo-Engelstein, Ph.D. of Altamont was chosen by the BBC as one of “100 inspiring and influential women from around the world for 2019.” She teaches students at Albany Medical College about the human side of being a doctor. In this week’s podcast, Campo-Engelstein talks with passion about her work as a feminist bioethicist. She reports that half of all pregnancies in the United States are unplanned and argues for the need for a male birth-control pill, which has been more than 50 years in the making. Campo-Engelstein also works in fertility preservation, for example, arguing that insurance companies should cover this for cancer patients. She enjoyed meeting women, from artists to athletes, at the BBC symposium in London and only regretted that World Cup winner Megan Rapinoe couldn’t make it. Campo-Engelstein is herself a soccer player and also admires Rapinoe’s advocacy for human rights. Contact us at podcasts@altamontenterprise.com. Perhaps you’ve had this experience – visiting a foreign country where you can’t speak, read, or write the language. Well, recent arrivals to the United States experience that sense of isolation which can prevent them from engaging with their neighbors, getting a job, and helping their children succeed in school. Fortunately, there are people eager to help. Aimee Lam is executive director and Susan Engelstein program and events manager for the Literacy Volunteers of Somerset County in New Jersey. There are organizations like LVSC all over the country. Aimee and Susan talk with Woman Around Town’s Editor Charlene Giannetti about how LVSC volunteers are advancing the cause of literacy in their community. Read Marina Kennedy’s story about LVSC.

Join Bridget Keown, Jackie Gronau, James Robinson, Matt Bowser, and Thanasis Kinias as we join PhD Candidate Feruza Aripova to discuss her research into the suppression of same sex desire in the Soviet Union, either through punishment in the Stalinist era to later pathologizing same sex desire as a disease to be treated. The 1930s saw the rolling back of both legalization of homosexuality and abortion that had been gained by the Revolution. Feruza guides us through what happened, how same sex desire continued in prisons and underground communities, and how her background growing up in Soviet Central Asia shaped her experience. How did same sex desire come to be defined as a threat to the Soviet state and Communist Party? Feruza guides us through her research in the archives in the Baltics, and private archives in Moscow. We round it up with talking about the Women's Section of the Communist Party in exploring Soviet Feminism, specifically on Alexandra Kollontai. Further Reading: Agamben, Giorgio.
