In What I've Been Watching, I chat about the 2018 Jon Hamm, Catherine Keener release "Nostalgia," which I found available for viewing at the Uintah County Library in Vernal, UT. Great space, and very cool show!   Hi! My name is Terry J. Aman, marking my 101st episode of VideoFuzzy, reporting the progress I've made in cataloging thousands of VHS transfers and digital recordings. First, heading toward my eighth anniversary doing this podcast, I'm trying to build some engagement. I posted an 11th installment of "VideoFuzzy: The Video - Celebrating 100 Episodes!" at https://youtu.be/eWfcCDiOZ2I. Please share as you're able to with anyone you feel might enjoy this production. Also, most of my recent episodes have posted with promos, so those are also available to share freely. And you have to scroll all the way down, but there are more general promos posted at https://videofuzzy.libsyn.com. Enjoy! This set covers discs 1801 to 1825 in my Classic Collection. For my Fuzzy Feature, from Disc 1818 I pulled up the "Parks and Recreation" second season episode "94 Meetings," and traced Cross Connections for Dan Butler, Jane McGregor, Robert Englund, Timothy Olyphant, Zeljko Ivanek, Robert Picardo, Tony Hale, John Barrowman, Diane Farr, Stephen Weber, Larry Widmore, Ted Bagley, Julie Benz, Krinstin Chenowith, Martha Plimpton, Yeardley Smith and Alex Kingston, plus from "Eli Stone" and elsewhere, I celebrate Golden Thread Loretta Devine. In my Classic Collection, I call up my 2010 "TV is the New Reading" podcast commentary on "Happy Town." David Tennant and Patrick Stewart shared the stage in a PBS "Great Performances" production of "Hamlet." Plus comments on "Doctor Who," "Fringe," "The Crying Game" from 1992, and I highlighted insights by fellow podcaster Terry Geo's "Refracted World" at Refracted World "Love is Love Legally" at https://bit.ly/3RoEg0L. Also, "Damages," "Mercy," "South Park," "The Office," "Community," "The Simpsons," OKGO on "The Colbert Report," "Minnesota Original" and on "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart," Jon hilariously simulated capping the BP oil spill. In What I've Been Watching, comments on the pilot episode of "Continuum," plus "Captain America: Brave New World," Trey Parker's "Orgazmo," the 2003 Edie Falco pilot of "Fargo," you can find a copy of that posted here: https://bit.ly/4jdNPMb. The End of the Affair was released on Dec 3, 1999 in just 7 theaters so that it could bait some Oscars and then going wide on January 21. It would ultimately bring in just shy of 11 million dollars on 23 million dollar budget, though it did open with an astonishing $28,000 per screen average, so maybe a wider initial release would have been wise. The End of the Affair was the second 1999 film in 11 months (after January's psychological thriller In Dream) from auteur Neil Jordan, best known for 1992's Oscar winning film The Crying Game as well as 1994's Interview with the Vampire. It was also the second sweeping period romance in just a couple years for star Ralph Fiennes after The English Patient, leading to many critics and audiences drawing comparisons between the two films. It was also the one film for which 1999's busiest woman, Julianne Moore, was nominated for an Oscar, despite her equal performances in A Map of the World, An Ideal Husband, and Magnolia. Joining John and Julia to talk about this second (incredibly horny) adaptation of Graham Greene's The End of the Affair is film critic, writer, and podcaster Kristin Battestella (I Think Therefore I Review) Kristin is on Bluesky @thereforereview

Oscar-winning director, screenwriter and novelist Neil Jordan made his name with the 1984 movie The Company Of Wolves, adapted from an Angela Carter short story. His 1986 film Mona Lisa earned BAFTA and Golden Globe awards for its star Bob Hoskins. Jordan scored an even bigger critical and commercial hit worldwide with The Crying Game, which had six Academy Award nominations including best screenplay which was won by Neil Jordan himself. His 20 feature films made over 40 years also include an adaptation of Ann Rice's novel Interview With the Vampire, Irish revolutionary drama Michael Collins and The End Of The Affair, adapted from the Graham Greene novel. Neil Jordan talks to John Wilson about his upbringing in a Dublin suburb, the son of a school teacher father who encouraged an early love of storytelling. After working as a labourer, and in a Dublin theatre for a while, he met filmmaker John Boorman (Point Blank, Deliverance, The Emerald Forest) who, in 1980, was shooting his Arthurian legend film Excalibur at film studios in Ireland. Boorman invited Neil Jordan to direct a documentary about the making of Excalibur, an experience which started his filmmaking career. Jordan also chooses the 1943 Jean Genet novel Notre Dame des Fleurs - Our Lady Of The Flowers - as a formative influence on his screenwriting. He recalls the struggles to make The Crying Game and how the film's producer Harvey Weinstein objected to the inclusion of a trans character, a supporting role for which Jaye Davidson was nominated as best actor at the 1992 Academy Awards.Producer: Edwina PitmanArchive used: Clip from A Fistful of Dollars, Sergio Leone, 1964 Clip from Excalibur, John Boorman, 1981 Clip from The Crying Game, Neil Jordan, 1992 Neil Jordan accepts his Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, 1992 Clip from The Crying Game, Neil Jordan, 1992 Clip from Michael Collins, Neil Jordan, 1996

Interview with the Vampire (1994) Review

Horror Movie Talk

Play Episode Listen Later May 29, 2024

Synopsis Based on the 1976 novel by Anne Rice, Interview with the Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles tells the autobiographical story of a Vampire named Louis de Pointe du Lac (played by Brad Pitt) being turned and taught by the vampire Lestat (Tom Cruise). They are just very good vampire friends and totally not gay.  After becoming a vampire, Louis discovers he has great powers, and uses them to have the poutiest mouth and become as emo as possible. He makes a lot of friends along the way, including Kirsten Dunst playing a pedo's dream, as well as Zorro. Review of Interview with the Vampire (1994) This is probably my favorite vampire movie, so I'm biased, but I still think it holds up. It focuses on the coolest part of the vampire stories, the vampires, and gets rid of the pesky humans. This is also probably one of my favorite roles of Tom Cruise. His playfulness and arrogance as Lestat carries the majority of the movie.  Kirsten Dunst also puts in one of the greatest performances of her career as a convincing forty year old in a child's body. Brad Pitt is the only one that upon rewatching becomes less interesting every reviewing. There's really nothing for him to do other than pout and look pretty. But granted, he does that very well here. What the film does best is maintain a vibe of sexy morbidness.  Seeing this in my youth, I was distracted by the boobs in this movie, and only now realize how extremely gay coded the film is. Louis's alternating between reveling in being a vampire and being shamed by it really represented what it must have felt like to be gay in the early 90s. The director Neil Jordan had just come off of directing The Crying Game and was really at the peak of his powers. Looking at his IMDB page, it's only been downhill from here.  Stan Winton's special effects and makeup is perfectly understated and makes the vampires seem otherworldly and the killings properly visceral. A lot of stars aligned with this film and I still think it stands the test of time. If you want to watch a bunch of sexy vampires almost kissing, this is the movie for you. Score 10/10

PopaHALLics #123 "Pop Tarts & Pop Sweets"What can we say about Jerry Seinfeld's new movie about Pop Tarts? How about: You'd be better off taking a bite of the Spanish Inquisition ("The Familiar"), teenage murder ("Under the Bridge"), a murderous con man ("Ripley"), the Ku Klux Klan ("A Fever in the Heartland"), even an apocalyptic wasteland ("Fallout").Streaming:"Unfrosted," Netflix. Seinfeld's directorial debut is a relentlessly silly film about the creation of Pop Tarts. Seinfeld, Melissa McCarthy, Jim Gaffigan, Amy Schumer, and many other comedians star in this tale of the early '60s race between the Kellogg's and Post companies to create a square gooey-filled pastry."Fallout," Amazon Prime. Most of this drama based on the popular video game franchise takes place hundreds of years after a nuclear war. A perky vault dweller goes to the desolate surface in search of her abducted father; a squire becomes a "knight" in a motorized suit of armor; and a sentinent zombie who dresses and acts like a Clint Eastwood spaghetti Western creates havoc wherever he goes. Imaginative and violent, with an odd, goofy sense of humor."Ripley," Netflix. In this limited series, Andrew Scott (the hot priest in "Fleabag," Moriarty in "Sherlock") plays the latest incarnation of Tom Ripley, Patricia Highsmith's scheming con man. Dakota Fanning and Johnny Flynn also star in this neo-noir psychological thriller."Under the Bridge," Hulu. Eight teenagers are accused of murdering a 14-year-old girl in this "American true-crime" miniseries. Oscar nominee Lily Gladstone plays an investigator while Riley Keough plays Rebecca Godfrey, who wrote the book that inspired the miniseries."Byzantium," for rental or various channels with ads. Gemma Atherton and Saiorse Ronan ("Brooklyn") play two nomadic female vampires surviving on their wiles in this visually stunning, atmospheric 2013 film. Director Neil Jordan ("The Crying Game") reinvigorated vampire movies with his version of Anne Rice's "Interview with a Vampire."Books:"A Fever in the Heartland: The Ku Klux Klan's Plot to Take Over America, and the Woman Who Stopped Them," by Timothy Egan. This true story explores the second coming of the Klan in the 1920s and their leader, a grifter named D.C. Stephenson, who had so much power in Indiana at one time that he said "I am the law." He was undone by a trial that featured the dying testimony of a young woman he had abducted, raped and tortured."The Familiar," by Leigh Bardugo. When a disgraced secretary tries to regain the favor of Spain's king, a scullion with a gift for "little miracles" becomes involved in an effort to defeat the hated English. Unfortunately, the Spanish Inquisition does not look kindly on her use of magic.

SEASON 20 BEGINS!!! We meet ICON of film and Hollywood costumes SANDY POWELL OBE!!!! We discuss her love of art, collaborating with legendary queer artists/creative minds Derek Jarman and Lindsay Kemp, a 25 year collaboration with choreographer Lea Anderson, and how art informs her costume design. Sandy is a multi award-winning Costume Designer who has won three Academy Awards, three BAFTA Awards for Best Costume Design, plus the recent honour of BAFTA Fellowship 2023, and a Costume Designers Guild Award.Londoner, Sandy, studied at St Martins School of Art and the Central School of Art and Design where she specialised in theatre design. She started her professional career in fringe with the National Theatre working on numerous productions including Orders of Obedience and Rococo. She went on to design sets and costumes for productions of Lumiere and Son, Bright Side and Culture Vulture. As a student and one of the leading lights of the international theatre scene she most admired was Lindsay Kemp, the gifted director, designer and performer. On impulse she spoke to him on the phone and said how much she wanted to work with him. After seeing samples of her work he asked her to join him in Milan as costume designer for his theatre company. During her 3 year spell with him she worked on Nijinsky which was a study of the start and madness of the great Russian dancer. She also designed the costumes for The Big Parade, a tragic- comic homage to the silent screen, and the stage and screen versions of A Midsummer Nights Dream. In 1985 she rapidly established herself in the world of video working on many pop promos with director Derek Jarman and with him on his film Caravaggio, and Zenith's For Queen and Country.Born in 1960, she was raised in south London, where she was taught to sew by her mother on a Singer sewing machine, and began experimenting with cutting and adapting patterns at a young age. Educated at Sydenham High School, she went on to complete an Art Foundation at Saint Martins in 1978, and in 1979 she began a BA in Theatre Design at Central School of Art and Design (now Central Saint Martins.)In 1981 she withdrew from her degree to assist a costume designer who worked for a fringe theatre company called Rational Theatre, and also began a long collaboration with Lindsay Kemp designing for him in Italy and Spain. In 1984 when, after a spell as a costume designer on music videos, she moved into the film industry. Her break came when the film director and stage designer Derek Jarman appointed her costume designer on his film, Caravaggio (1986), starring Tilda Swinton and Sean Bean. To date, Powell has worked as Costume Designer on over 50 films, including Orlando (1992);The Crying Game (1992); Interview with the Vampire (1994); Michael Collins (1996); The Wings of The Dove (1997); Hilary and Jackie (1998); The End of the Affair (1999); Gangs of New York (2002); Far From Heaven (2002); Sylvia (2003); The Aviator (2005); The Departed (2006); Shutter Island (2010) Hugo (2011) The Wolf of Wall Street (2013); Cinderella (2015); Carol (2015); Mary Poppins Returns (2018); and Living (2022).
