Knowledge comes from experience-- so does Perspective. Leo Kiesling's perspective on life developed from circumstances and from doing. "We don't sit around and feel sorry for ourselves. If you want change, you make it," he extoles. A life of doing, taking action, is so rewarding.  The more challenges you endure the more resiliant you are.  You can't build your immune system without a collision of differences. And be smart about it too. "Don't ever get into trouble you can't handle," Leo urges.  Clear vision increases your surface area for success.  This is a truth I have learned from the best entrepreneurs.  Enjoy the Perspective.

Lydia Kiesling's Novel 'Mobility' Explores Ethical Dilemmas; And A Quick Update on the Trump Indictments

Former President Donald Trump has been indicted on four counts related to his efforts to overturn the 2020 election results. We check in with KQED senior politics editor Scott Shafer about the importance of Trump's third indictment, what it means for the 2024 election and how California's Republican party is responding. Then, we talk to Lydia Kiesling, a former resident of the Bay Area, about her new book, “Mobility." Bunny Glenn, the protagonist in Kiesling's novel, voted for Barack Obama, believes in the science of climate change and, as the daughter of a diplomat was steeped in the effects of environmental devastation and resource wars. She also works in the oil industry. And it's this ethical compromise, and all the little compromises people make every day, that center Kiesling's novel. Inspired by the oil power grabs in former Soviet states, and drawn from her own childhood as the daughter of a Foreign Service officer, “Mobility” captures the rootlessness of a young woman struggling to find her place.

In today's episode, we interview Dr. Kalin Kiesling. She is a nuclear engineer at the Department of Energy's Argonne National Lab where she develops the software that other engineers use to design and analyze new nuclear reactor concepts. She earned her PhD in Nuclear Engineering and Engineering Physics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2022, from which she also holds a bachelors and masters in nuclear engineering. We learn about her background and career path, and how she choose to get all her degrees at the same university. We also learn about her research and the methods she used during her PhD and the programming she carries out in her job, as well as about the timeline of the PhD at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the various milestones in the program. We also learn about how she landed her position at Argonne, and how the pandemic influenced her life values and career aspirations.Outside of her technical area in nuclear engineering, Kalin is passionate about diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in the nuclear industry, broader STEM field, and academia in general. At Argonne National Lab she is on a DEI council where she advocates for her colleagues and works with leadership to make impactful changes. We learn about the state of DEI in the nuclear industry and the changes occurring in the field, as well as Kalin's best advice on how to foster DEI in STEM and academia.Outside of work, she enjoys spending time with her family (husband and almost 4 year old daughter) and getting lost in one of her many hobbies (usually some form of crafting or gardening). As an academic parent of a baby, the pandemic certainly hit Kalin's research hard. We learn about Kalin's journey as an academic parent, the support provided by her university and advisor, and how her parenting journey coincided with the pandemic. We round off the episode learning about Kalin's best advice for PhD students, how she sets boundaries around work, reflecting on the impact of COVID-19 and what a day in the life looks like for her.ReferencesKalin on Twitter  Kalin on  LinkedIn

“School's out for the summer!” is a rallying cry for students everywhere. But for working parents, summer poses a whole set of challenges, starting with – who is going to watch the kids during the day? For many, summer camps are the answer. Camps offer the promise of exploration, adventure, and a chance to make new friends and acquire new skills. And if you have a specific hobby or interest – needlework, videography, chess – there is likely a camp for you. But getting a spot in a camp, managing the constellation of choices and conflicting schedules, and, especially, paying for a summer's worth of camps can present major problems for families. Why is summer camp such a mess? Why aren't there more affordable options for childcare when school is out? And how can you hack summer to find a spot for your child if you didn't sign up for one in January? We'll talk summer camp and hear from you: What's your child doing this summer? Guests: Lydia Kiesling, journalist and author. Kiesling's most recent piece for Bloomberg is "How Summer Camp Became Such a Hot Mess for Parents" Eduardo Caballero, co-founder and executive director, EDMO, a summer camp in the Bay Area Jessica Calarco, expert on inequalities in education and family life; associate professor of sociology, University of Wisconsin-Madison

Join Karaleigh in an interview with the adventurous Scott and Nancy Kiesling! Scott & Nancy are relationship coaches. They use their unique method of adventure therapy to help people overcome their self-doubt and fears and build an ultimate relationship with themSELF first, so they can then attract in the love they've always desired. After two years of marriage, Scott was involved in an accidental explosion at work, resulting in a brain injury, hearing loss, and vertigo. This drastically changed their life and the dynamic of their relationship causing them to create innovative tools and strategies to keep their relationship thriving and continue to create the life they dreamed to live. Today they share what they have learned with others so they can help people develop unshakeable self love, live their best life, and have amazing relationships. Scott & Nancy continue to build online courses, speak at corporate events, and host esteem-building Adventure Therapy Retreats. They have multiplied their business by 10 fold in the last year working with high profile people such as supermodels, Hollywood actors/actresses, doctors, lawyers, realtors, and entrepreneurs. They have appeared on multiple podcasts, have been featured on The List TV, Authority Magazine, Wander Magazine, and Tony Robbins recently announced that he'd recommend them as coaches because “they've lived it!” Favorite takeaways: 1. As sailors, you're never really on course. You don't lose it, you shift one degree and get back on course. And when you think about one degree shifts over a length, over a distance, over a period of time, that shift is incredibly large. 2. In the challenges is where we get to have a growth spurt, it's where we get to develop that sunshine, that light within us. 3. Are you going to stay angry? Are you going to stay in that place of resentment? Or are you going to find what it actually taught you and what the gift was? 4. Sometimes it just takes that hindsight to look back at those really horrific trials in our lives and go, oh actually I can see now how this was a miracle for my good, how this was actually meant to be, how this was just set up for my growth and my learning and for such a beautiful incredible future. 5. The light is there, I just have to take another step. Nobody can tell us how many steps it takes, but what I can tell you is that if we give up, we will find out that it was just one more step and the light was there, the door was there, the window was there for you. 6. I encourage everyone, no matter what you're going through, no matter how bad it looks in your present moment, take that next step, take that next action. 7. Faith, for me, is about the belief that when I take that next step, it's going to lead to that treasure, to that growth. 8. Every time you step out of your comfort zone it's the fastest path to self growth. 9. Change your story, change your life. 10. Don't deviate from Plan A. That next step is also called determination. We confuse the universe when we jump all over- just keep going after what it is that you deep down want, and it will start to show itself and work out.
