In addition to the resources listed elsewhere in this blog, I recommend the following resources for studying the Colonial American era with intermediate level learners: Mayflower History: This site is dedicated to teaching about the Mayflower using primary sources. There are links to the sources (mainly letters) linked from the site. Colonial Williamsburg Email List: This newsletter appears in email boxes once per month and includes information about given colonial era topics, links to primary sources addressing those topics, teaching suggestions related to the issue topic, and resources available from Colonial Williamsburg. Note: The emil is a means of commercially seeking buyers, but the content is still worthwhile.Colonial Williamsburg Summer Teacher Institutes: These one-week institutes engage teachers in the colonial era through lecture as well as simulated experience. They occur on-site and include room and board. The cost for the week is $1,900, but scholarships are available.Reader's Theater Resources: Several companies offer reader's theater scripts relating to Colonial America. I recommend both Teacher Created Materials and Houghton-Milton (for slower readers) scripts.Chautauqua Presentations: For a fee of $50, Nevada Humanities will underwrite the expenses of having a Chautauqua presenter come to your school for a performance. Annually, the Boulder City Chautauqua Performers (including Young Chautauquans) present. See schedule for times and dates. The Lesson of 1623—Yours, Mine, and Ours: This is a free video available from izzit. It uses resources from Colonial Williamsburg to tell about the era. By joining izzit, teachers are given one free video from their collection each year. Note that each video also includes a teacher's guide. One of Virginia's Teaching American History Grant projects produced some amazing unit plans relating to the colonial era. You may access them here. These books are useful for pedagogical purposes, especially when using simulation strategies to teach about Colonial and Revolutionary periods of U.S. history.Baicker, K. Today I had the pleasure of speaking with Jennifer Buffet on the phone. She will be the speaker this Friday at the power of the purse luncheon. The Women's Fund of The Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee is hosting Jennifer Buffet to inspire and encourage women in our community to make a difference, and to invest in the women and girls of Middle Tennessee. Here is a link to listen to our conversationhttp://ftp.wrlt.com/production/tunedin/10/100419JenniferBuffet.mp3 Here is a link to the free Tuned In podcast on ituneshttp://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/tuned-in-blog/id356852223 For 11 years, the Power of the Purse® Luncheon and tribute book have celebrated and honored women, raising more than $1 million for The Women's Fund. Since the inception of the Fund, hundreds of Middle Tennessee nonprofits have received grants to help women and girls in need. Here is a write up about the event, including how to get ticketshttp://www.nowplayingnashville.com/event/detail/168599/The_Power_of_the_Purse_Luncheon About The Women’s FundThe Women’s Fund of The Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee, established in 1994, provides grants to Middle Tennessee nonprofit organizations serving the interests of women and girls through education, health and human services, victim’s support services, domestic violence intervention, drug rehabilitation, and job training. The Women's Fund was established both to raise women's awareness of their philanthropic potential and to increase and perpetuate financial support for community programs directly addressing the needs of women and girls. Past Women's Fund grant recipients include American Association of Refugee & Immigrant Women, Domestic Violence Intervention Center, Mending Hearts, The Next Door, and Renewal House, among others. Visit www.thewomensfund.com for more information, or call The Community Foundation at 615-321-4939.  Jennifer Buffett is Co-Chair and President of the NoVo Foundation (Latin NoVo: change, alter, invent), a philanthropic organization focused primarily on the empowerment of women and girls. She is responsible for the day-to-day and strategic direction of NoVo and shares Board leadership of the foundation with her husband, composer and producer, Peter Buffett. In December 2009, Jennifer and her husband were named among Barron’s top 25 most effective Philanthropists. In September 2008, Jennifer and Peter received the Clinton Global Citizen Award for their “visionary leadership and sustainable, scalable work in solving pressing global challenges.” Presenting the award to the Buffetts, former President Bill Clinton said, “The Buffetts are leading an inspirational campaign to improve the status of women and girls across the globe. Their innovative approach to philanthropy has leveraged the capacity of existing organizations to affect real, positive change.”  NoVo Foundation’s approach is to invest in long-term strategic initiatives that lead to systemic change rather than short-term small granting.Among various investments, NoVo partners with the Nike Foundation on a $100 million effort, The Girl Effect, which is focused on bringing more resources to adolescent girls as the solutions to alleviating poverty worldwide. The Girl Effect aims to prove the critical and transformative power of an adolescent girl and affect large institutional change on behalf of girls. NoVo also supports strategic work globally to strengthen the movement to end violence against women and to support women and girls in conflict and post-conflict settings. In the U.S., NoVo works to support strategies addressing Work-Life family balance policy, Title IX, gender justice and empowering women and girls in the most marginalized situations. NoVo aims to infuse social emotional learning (SEL) in school cultures nationwide as a strategy to revitalize learning, end violence, and nurture a generation of competent and creative citizens. The Foundation views evidence-based SEL as the way to move schools towards becoming more nurturing and supportive places that give students a sense of well being, meaning, and healthy relational capacities for fulfilling, positive, and productive lives.Jennifer’s work in philanthropy began in 1997 when her in-laws, Susan and Warren Buffett, placed Jennifer and Peter in charge of a charitable fund. Her early work was focused primarily on social services in Wisconsin. During this time, Jennifer helped launch the Wisconsin Infant and Early Childhood Mental Health Association to advance practice and policy around healthy social and emotional development for young children. In 2006, Warren Buffett sparked a major increase in the foundation’s assets with a pledge of $1 billion in Berkshire Hathaway stock, and the Buffetts commenced a strategic planning process that led to a targeted set of initiatives.Jennifer earned her way through college and a BA in journalism and communications at the University of Wisconsin. She is a Board member of the Nike Foundation, V Day and serves on the International Center for Research on Women Leadership Council.

This is the third and final part of this presentation on the management practices recommended for bermudagrass. This presentation covers fertilization needs for stand maintenance in bermudagrass and the effect that harvesting methods, extended grazing, and late winter/early spring burning has on bermudagrass yields and persistence. This presentation also highlights some of the latest research on the subject at the University of Georgia and the USDA-ARS station in Tifton. (georgiaforages022.mov)

That's right! We're actually back! Many apologies for the several month hiatus between episodes. You can mostly blame Dave (he elaborates on the podcast). Hopefully, though, we will now be putting up episodes every Sunday (and working on streamlining the post-production process so as to reduce any further delays). Anyways, thanks for sticking with us, and on with the review! As you likely deduced from the podcast title, Dave and Diane review The Hangover this week. Directing: Diane didn't have much to say, but Dave thought that Todd Phillips (director of such movies as Starsky & Hutch and Old School) did a solid job relative to his previous directing efforts. Acting: Overall, Dave and Diane both generally enjoyed the acting. Diane's favorite performance was from Ed Helms (Stu), while Dave's was Zach Galifianakis as Alan. The hosts had an "interesting" discussion of Bradley Cooper (Phil). Music: The soundtrack of this film appealed to Diane's pop-music sensibilities (with tracks such as "Who Let the Dogs Out"), while Dave appreciated its use of older tracks (such as "Joker and the Thief"). Diane generally approved of the music in the film, while Dave thought it served its purpose, but that the music was not overly great. Plot: Diane was quite a fan of the plot in this film. She said in some ways it was rather brilliant, mostly due to a very unique set of comical devices (despite a very clichéd set-up for the movie's story). Dave had similar feelings. He quite enjoyed the humor, which he said was rather smart (despite sometimes resorting to some more low-brow gags). While Dave did not overly enjoy the plot, he felt it served the humor quite well. Overall Score: Both Dave and Diane had similar feelings on this film. While it was certainly not Oscar material, the hosts thought it was a very decent comedy with plenty of good laughs. Diane gave the film a B+, and Dave gave it a B. No Dave's DVD this week! Additional Notes: Dave would like to apologize for his audio levels being a bit high (creating a few rough spots). He's still getting back into the swing of audio editing. The intro music of this episode was provided by the Podshow Podsafe Music Network.
