I mean, my iPhone pushes me these adorable pictures of my now 16-year-old when he was a baby, and I want that time back and it's really hard. So we want to hold onto our kids, and that's why we as parents often over subsidize them.”“It is so hard because we're tempted to pay for everything for our kids, because we still see them as kids, and they're forever our children. So these are really hard, and that's why I wrote “Launching Financial Grownups, because I was struggling with this. And I will tell you, so I'm going to give away one thing from the book is that our 26 year old, she was 24 at the time when the book had been written, she was saving for an apartment in New York City, which is a very ambitious goal for a 22, 23-year-old. She lived at home, she switched her major in college which I do talk about in the book, why she switched to cybersecurity versus being in education, and it was with a focus on ‘Where can I earn more money?' And I will tell you, when she reached her goal of being able to buy her own apartment. And while we had to be in the background, as you say, she paid for everything, the down payment, all the lawyer costs, all the closing costs, every penny she paid for, the pride in that young lady's eyes, you have never seen. It is a gift to parents. When you let your child succeed on their own and you're just there cheering them on and you're just there cheering them on, that is going to be priceless. And so I would implore parents to let their kids shine.”

I chat with Financial Grownup best-selling author & podcast host Bobbi Rebell about what it means to be a financial grownup, the difference between high achievers and dreamers, and her story of going from journalist to entrepreneur focused on educating others about finance and success. Long description: Back in the spring, I had the opportunity to attend a women in business retreat called Statement that was organized by money expert Stefanie O’Connell and writer Emma Pattee. It was held in the Catskills and was 3 days of intense workshopping with other women entrepreneurs. It was honestly one of the best things I’ve experienced all year, especially since it gave me the chance to meet so many amazing women (many of whom will be on the podcast this season) One of those women is Bobbi Rebell. Bobbi is a CFP® and host of the Financial Grownup podcast. She is also the author of the best-selling self-help/personal finance book How to Be a Financial Grownup: Proven Advice from High Achievers on How to Live Your Dreams and Have Financial Freedom. If that wasn’t impressive enough, she’s also a keynote speaker and an award-winning TV anchor and personal finance columnist who has worked at Thomson Reuters, PBS (Nightly Business Report) CNN and CNBC. In this episode, we talk about how Bobbi Rebell went from traditional journalist to becoming an entrepreneur herself, starting with her book then launching a podcast. We also talk about how she’s able to get so many big celebrities on her show through the power of networking and just being ballsy and straight up asking them. I hope you feel motivated after this episode to get out there and stop thinking about doing something, but actually doing it. I know, doing is the hardest part, but without taking that next step, you’ll never be able to reach your full potential and you’ll never truly become a financial grownup. Bobbi Rebell, author of How to be a Financial Grownup: Proven Advice from High Achievers on How to Live Your Dreams and Have Financial Freedom discusses how to be a financial grownup. Bobbi uses her journalist background to offer a how-to guide for responsible money habits. Although the book was originally intended for the millennial generation, Bobbi soon discovered that people of all ages need practical money advice. Bobbi suggests automation as a tool for making sure you have the necessary discipline to maintain financial responsibility. She and Doug talk about David Bach and support financial automation as a tool to reach financial goals. Are you seeing your retirement needs clearly? Doug tackles the question, “can you save too much?” Doug also explores the potential pitfalls of pensions. While financial professionals tend to put an emphasis on saving, there comes a time when it is OK to withdraw principal from retirement accounts. Doug give pointers on when retirees can make the switch from saving to withdrawing. Follow Bobbi Rebell on her website, Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. Why is everyone such a financial mess? Why do successful, highly educated women have zero idea what is going on in their finances — and abandon their financial power to men? What do really successful people have to say about money and success? Bobbi Rebell, Reuters anchor and author of the new How to Be a Financial Grownup: Proven Advice from High Achievers on How to Live Your Dreams and Have Financial Freedom answers these questions and more. In this tidy book, and on this episode, Rebell, who is divorced, and remarried with a stepson, shares: What Ivana Trump taught her daughter Ivanka Trump about hard work and entitlement. Why 'fake it till you make it' is the brilliance behind Cynthia Rowley's fashion empire. How the heck she got Tony Robbins to write the book's forward. Can you attract a great man if you earn more than most men have a successful, high-profile career (asking for a friend)? Moreover, can you sustain a successful marriage if the wife earns more than the husband?
