In this conversation, Julia interviews Sallie Krawcheck, the CEO and founder of Ellevest, about the economy, the role of women in finance, and the retirement crisis. Sallie shares her assessment of the economy and markets, emphasizing the importance of long-term investing and the historical growth of the stock market. She also discusses the significant impact women had on the economy in the past year and the growth of Ellevest as a platform for women's wealth-building. Sallie reflects on her initial skepticism about starting a women-focused investing firm and the importance of overcoming imposter syndrome with a growth mindset. The conversation concludes with a shared love for their alma mater, UNC, and a reminder to support and promote women in finance. Takeaways Long-term investing in the stock market has historically delivered strong returns, making it a scalable way to build wealth. Women played a significant role in the economy in the past year, defying stereotypes and embracing their spending power. The retirement crisis disproportionately affects women, who have less wealth and live longer than men. Women tend to be better investors than men, as they are less likely to panic and trade frequently. Men have a crucial role to play in advancing gender equality and supporting women's financial empowerment. Why does the wage gap persist, despite both legislation and a cultural shift that encourages women to participate in the workforce with the fervor of a thousand exploding suns? The gap has barely budged over the last decade or two, stagnating somewhere in the low 80% range. I had to crawl into some objectionable online spaces that are expressly “anti-women” to find out (so you don't have to!)…and the consensus I found there was dizzying. I'm also joined by Ellevest's CEO Sallie Krawcheck—and, I have to say, this conversation is a must-listen. Sallie Krawcheck is the CEO and co-founder of Ellevest, an investing and wealth management company built by women for women. In a sea of financial services sameness, Ellevest stands apart with its mission to get more money in the hands of women. Prior to Ellevest, Krawcheck was one of the only financial executives of her generation to have held C-suite roles at the largest global banks — as CEO of Merrill Lynch, Smith Barney, US Trust, and Sanford Bernstein and as CFO of Citi. Today, as a venture-funded entrepreneur, she's beat impossibly long odds to raise $144 million in venture-capital funding (women CEOs raise $1 out of every $10,000 Series B fintech dollars). Fortune Magazine has called Krawcheck “The Last Honest Analyst,” Barron's considers her one of the “Most Influential Women in US Finance,” and Vanity Fair has named her to their “New Establishment List.” In this episode of Takin' Care of Lady Business®, Jennifer Justice speaks with Sallie Krawcheck, the CEO and founder of Ellevest, an investment and wealth management company for women. They discuss the importance of financially empowering women and debunking societal myths discouraging them from prioritizing money and investing. Krawcheck highlights the difference between saving and investing, emphasizing the higher chances of positive returns with investing. They address the gender wealth gap and the impact of investing on women's financial independence, including the ability to leave toxic relationships and pursue dreams. Here is what to expect on this week's show: Unveil the secrets of how compounding can amplify your investments over time. Learn why one size doesn't fit all in investing and why women might need to approach investing differently. Get a sneak peek into a platform aiming to revolutionize how women invest. How to dive deep into investments that align with your values and secure your financial future while supporting causes you're passionate about. Quotes: “We've got to change culture to recognize that money wanting money is not being unattractive or unfeminine or greedy or shrewish or ugly or any of those things.” – Sallie Krawcheck “The smart way to do it is not invest on your emotions but to invest steadily and through a sense of panic.” – Sallie Krawcheck “The past is the past. On this episode of “Money Reimagined,” Michael Casey takes listeners on an insightful journey into the world of finance and technology featuring two intriguing interviews conducted on the sidelines of ‘Uncharted' a Summit held on June 24, 202, at the residence of media entrepreneur Michael Lowe in Southampton. The first interview is with Sallie Krawcheck, the former head of Bank of America's global wealth and Investment Management Division, and the founder of EllaVest, a groundbreaking digital finance advisory firm tailored for women. With her vast experience in Wall Street, Krawcheck shares her perspective on cryptocurrency and whether EllaVest includes it in their investment strategies. The second interview brings forward Nick Mayer, the founder of Provocative Science, who unveils a fascinating approach to the environmental impact of Bitcoin mining. Rather than viewing it solely as a drain on energy resources, Mayer's team has discovered a unique way to harness the wind output from ASIC miners to drive carbon capture solutions. This innovative dual-purpose proposition aligns with the common notion that Bitcoin mining can support renewable energy development. On this episode of “Money Reimagined,” Michael Casey takes listeners on an insightful journey into the world of finance and technology featuring two intriguing interviews conducted on the sidelines of ‘Uncharted' a Summit held on June 24, 2023, at the residence of media entrepreneur Michael Lowe in Southampton. However, it goes a step further by addressing carbon reduction simultaneously. Mayer sheds light on the principle behind this idea and explains how his provocative science project leverages Bitcoin mining to tackle two critical challenges at once. This episode will leave you with a sense of excitement and hope for the future of finance at the intersection of technology and environmental consciousness.Story Links: Unchartedhttps://sites.google.com/loeb.nyc/uncharted Summary List:Money reimagined with Michael Casey and Sallie Krawcheck. Today on the podcast we hear from Sallie Krawcheck, Co-Founder and CEO of Ellevest, which is focused on helping close the gender wealth gap by redefining investing for women. The digital-first investment platform now has over $1Bn under management and is well on its way to incredible success. But before launching Ellevest in 2016, Sallie challenged the status quo as one of the highest-ranked women ever to have worked on Wall Street. That came tumbling to a halt in 2008 when she was fired from Citi for standing up for what she believed. I have fangirled Sallie since I first read about the chaos. And even more so when she decided to follow her passion and commitment by starting Elevest. It's a beautiful and noble mission and story. I am excited for you to hear our discussion including how she started Ellevest and scaled it. On this episode of #TheKaraGoldinShow. Enjoying this episode of #TheKaraGoldinShow? "While we've come a long way from the kind of sexist, racist office culture that was once depicted in Mad Men, masculinity is still deeply embedded in the DNA of the American workplace. In many offices, modern Don Drapers live among us, having switched out their three-piece suits for Patagonia vests and hoodies. Their macro-aggressions are now microaggressions and their daily whiskey drink … well, in some cases, it's still a daily whiskey drink. (And OK, some of their macro-aggressions survived, too.)From the very architecture of our offices to the traditional structure of a 9-to-5 workday, our workplace culture was built with men in mind. But what would happen if we tore it all down and rebuilt it, from scratch, thinking about women instead? Ellevest CEO and co-founder Sallie Krawcheck used hard data to imagine what that looks like in a recent Op-Ed for Fast Company."So, what would it look like? Thank you for joining Joshua "The World's Mayor" and Kelly Ann Winget for a powerful discussion about empowering women, minorities and making a way for those who are normally left behind. "I started my career in a male-dominated sales space, and I've been crashing through glass ceilings ever since. I've spent years working behind the curtain on over 700 Million dollars worth of private investments. I believe that money is very powerful, and in the hands of women, it can be even more powerful." - Kelly Ann Winget. Kelly Ann Winget, the 30-something-year-old CEO and founder of Dallas-based private equity firm, Alternative Wealth Partners, has raised almost 15 million dollars in her first fund in less than 12 months. with some dividends hitting investors' accounts in less than 30 days from when they invested. Kelly Ann has over a decade of experience in alternative investment, sourcing creative capital for startups, oil & gas companies, manufacturing ventures, real estate, and several other emerging markets. Additionally, Kelly Ann charges no upfront or additional management fees–all costs associated with running the fund come out of her 20% GP split. Breaking through glass ceilings in the financial sector is not her only challenge. Being a young gay female in a predominately older male-dominated space has also had its challenges. However, those struggles have created a strong foundation within her, helping her guide other women into financial freedom. Every day she works to redirect the financial narrative about women towards one of full possibility, plausibility, and excitement. Not only is she a spark but also the kindling, firing up other women to likewise pursue their own financial independence and sovereignty. Kelly Ann has been strongly championing women in various pursuits in 2022. Such as being actively involved with and an investor for Ellevest, the #1 investing platform for women by women. A pinnacle sponsor at the REBNY event: New York Forever: A Celebration of Our City, where she represented women as investors in the real estate space. She created and hosted a FemCoin event for the Women of Crypto at the Consensus 2022 festival in Austin, Texas. And she recently launched Fashion Full Circle, LLC with co-founder Sterling Woerner. This Texas-based company aims to create opportunities for women to step into their power and lead change in their communities. “Good things happen when women support women in business. Kelly Ann Winget has been a champion for women in finance and as an investor in Ellevest, is committed to getting more money into the hands of women.” – Sallie Krawcheck, CEO + Co-Founder, Ellevest Thank you for being a part of this segment of Joshua “The World's Mayor” on the Live Mana Network, brought to you by the Live Mana Worldwide Foundation. With her longstanding Wall Street career (Citigroup, Merrill Lynch) and unique perspective as a woman in a predominantly male industry, Sallie Krawcheck is tackling a question that has mystified investment banks for decades: how to successfully market wealth management services to women. As CEO of digital financial investment platform Ellevest, she sees diversity as the greatest advantage in cracking the code. Krawcheck encourages each employee to bring their "whole self" to work, and emphasizes hiring the best fit for the team, which in some cases could be a different choice than the person who traditionally would be considered the best fit for the role. This interview was originally published on September of 2016.
On this week's Loose Change, Berna is back with Sallie Krawcheck to continue their conversation from earlier this week on financial wellness and our personal role in it. They also discuss the state of the financial education world, and how to navigate it to make sure you find the right path for you in these confusing topics. Be sure to follow us @whenshappyhr to send in your questions and let us know what you thought of our first season!
This week, for our final episode of the season Berna joins us in reflecting on everything we've talked about this season and how it relates to our daily lives. She's joined by Sallie Krawcheck, CEO and co-founder of Ellevest, to discuss the wide topic of financial wellness, and how it applies to us. They also break down the appalling results of a recent survey that highlighted massive gender inequities in people's relationship to money, and what's behind these differences. They also get into how powerless it can feel to be an individual stuck in our system, and how to take concrete steps to better your financial situation and outlook without feeling overwhelmed. Be sure to follow us @whenshappyhr to send in your questions to be answered on Make It Make Cents!
