We enthusiastically pore over the apostrophe-tagged Bay Area band that defied the psychedelic rock that was the rage in the late 60s and stuck to their rock 'n' roll path to create some truly stirring, soulful, and sizzling music. And get your Groovies on by listening to our lovingly created Flamin' Groovies playlist on Spotify: https://spoti.fi/3wCoaoE
This is the first episode in our four part series of just random albums we have chosen to review on the show and today we have chosen The Flamin' Groovies 1971 album "Teenage Head" to review and talk about.
Another, better recorded (the secret is to crochet the microphone - not knit it!) show to thrill you marrow and engorge your aubergine featuring the likes of The Flamin' Groovies, Toots & The Maytals , Judy Collins, Julia Lee (Oo-er, matron), The Table, Shallou, Big Sam's Funky Nation, Neil Young, E.K.'s Professional Band (What do you mean, you've never heard of them?), The Roamin' Jasmine, The Moody Blues, Spirit, The Strokes and all the others (not that many) I couldn't be bothered to type. So what are you waiting for? Obviously, I don't know the answer to that question. Don't you hate rhetorical questions?
In the second episode of our Lockdown Lowdown series, we welcome Ruts DC guitarist Leigh Heggarty into the virtual Retrosonic Podcast studio. Leigh talks us through some of his most memorable musical moments from hearing The Beatles for the first time to gigs and records that made an impact on him and his guitar playing, right through to the present day touring and recording with Ruts DC. Along the way we learn about his encounters with Henry Rollins, Wayne Kramer, The Stranglers, Alvin Gibbs, Wilko Johnson and of course Paul Fox, Segs and Dave Ruffy of The Ruts/Ruts DC. There's also a look back on the now legendary but hugely emotional benefit show for Paul Fox, his last with The Ruts, which featured Henry Rollins on lead vocals and many special guests including The Damned, Misty In Roots, U.K. Subs, Tom Robinson and more. This hugely enjoyable trip down memory lane is soundtracked by some of Leigh's favourite tunes from The Beatles, Marc Bolan & T-Rex, The Who, Rory Gallagher, Bruce Springsteen, Dr. Feelgood, The Stranglers and The Flamin' Groovies and of course The Ruts. There's also a pick of Leigh's own work with The Price, Alvin Gibbs & The Disobedient Servants and of course, Ruts DC. For full tracklisting and links to featured artists please check out the feature on Retro Man Blog at this link: https://retroman65.blogspot.com/2020/06/retrosonic-podcast-lockdown-lowdown_17.html Podcover photo by Terry Heggarty.

HAMMERED SATIN "Dynamite" Velvet Vortex Dead Beat Records / Burger Records https://burgerrecords.11spot.com/hammered-satin-velvet-vortex.html https://shop.dead-beat-records.com/products/hammered-satin-velvet-vortex-lp-ex-zeros-flamin-groovies Hammered Satin- Velvet Vortex LP. Los Angeles power house Hammered Satin boast an all star line-up containing four lifers who've done time in various legendary bands including the Zeros, Flamin' Groovies, Flytraps, S’cool Girls and Teachers Pet. These guys have been riding their own Glam fueled rockin' rollercoaster for nearly a decade now and on their second album, 'Velvet Vortex', they set their time machine to the 1970's and throw away the key. On 'Velvet Vortex' they take you back to the mid 70's pre-punk Glitter days brandishing a powerful, high-energy Glam Rock sound that brings to mind the Glitter filled, glory-days of bands like Slade, the Sweet, T. Rex, Mud and the Glitter Band. Their music is built around bold, monstrous riffs with a tuff, driving rhythm section blasting nearly a dozen souped up tracks of mid-fi rumble rock. It's bubblegummey and infectious and infused with the Junkshop Glam electricity of bands like Chicory Tip, Hello, Spiv and Hector complete with a rolling thunder recording style straight outta 1974. Hammered Satin boldly carry that dimly lit Glam Rock glitter torch back into the 21st century unleashing this flat out scorcher that includes back-up vocals by uber Glam aficionado Don Bolles of the Germs.
Authors Jeremy Frank and Jim Passon join us to discuss their new book, which focuses on "the baseball stats you never thought to look for" from the 19th century through the Deadball Era. Featured song: "I Can't Hide," Flamin' Groovies.

70's Power Pop Flashback Flamin' Groovies - Shake Some Action The Rubinoos - The Girl 20/20 - Yellow Pills I'm on a little power pop kick, trying to get out of a funk I've been in all year. Nothing makes me feel better than the blissful sounds of 3 chords chiming out on electric guitars over some soaring harmonies and a driving drum beat. This week's flashback is a three-fer, since we could all use a little lift from the battering of bad news we've been having lately. This week, those Flamin' Groovies were on my playlist, so join me in flashing back to the power pop of 1976. (The year Dazed And Confused, one of my favorite Linklater movies, takes place!) The Groovies were signed to Sire Records, which was pretty indie in the seventies, with such bands as Talking Heads and The Ramones. Next up is The Rubinoos, a power pop duo from Berkeley, CA, who signed with a new label, Berserkley Records, in 1975, when they were young teens. Their first record, The Rubinoos, debuted in 1977 and charted a mild hit with a cover of Tommy James' I Think We're Alone Now. Finally we have 20/20, a Tulsa, OK band with a power pop fanzine named after one of their songs, Yellow Pills. The fanzine went bust in the nineties, but there are several power pop compilations cds available here and there online. I have two of them, and I find them highly addicting, which has sent me on a quest to find the rest.
