Send us a textOn this weeks episode, we discuss an LP by John Wesley Harding (né Wesley Stace), 1996's John Wesley Harding's New Deal. After releasing two EPs and three full length albums with a full band for Sire Records, Harding decided to strip down his sound for his debut on his new label Forward Records (an imprint of Rhino Records). Harding much preferred the intimacy of acoustic live performances and created an album that embraced that aesthetic whole heatedly. Described by Harding as “gangsta folk,” John Wesley Harding's New Deal is a beautiful record and a fan favorite. It was the first time Harding had the freedom to make the record he always wanted to make. The song arrangements are simple and direct, putting the focus of the lyrics., which are both sly and whimsical, and full of British charm. And as an added bonus, the album even includes a fantastic sequel of sorts to the Kink's “Waterloo Sunset.”Visit us at www.tappingvinyl.com.

This week we jump back to the 1990s to hear the story of The JudyBats with frontman Jeff Heiskell. This band has an incredible catalog and they reached the charts so you will probably recall a track or two of theirs if you were in your teens or 20s at that time. Or you might be a raving fan and can't wait to hear more about them. And if you don't know their music at all, well...I'm kinda jealous, because you're about to find your next favorite band, just 3 decades later. The JudyBats were founded when Jeff Heiskell and Ed Winters were playing together and heard a neighbors house playing music as well and ran in to the group of Tim Stutz, Johnny Shugrue and Terry Casper at a local bar in Knoxville, TN and agreed to start playing together. They added Peggy Hambright and the took off as The JudyBats, finding success locally pretty quickly, then getting signed to Sire Records. The first track they released was for a tribute album the label was putting out, and it found immediate success too.I've really enjoyed the fact that we've been able to bring on bands and musicians from the 90s to share their stories and their music. These are people who I was a massive fan of and never thought I'd get to speak with at all, let alone in some kind of legitimate capacity. I enjoy bringing on the likes of The Samples, Wheatus, Tripping Daisy and this week's guest The JudyBats as their music is all so good it is still relevant today and worth your time. It doesn't matter when good music was written and released, if it's awesome and you haven't discovered it yet, then that's all that matters. Plus, with these bands, we get the complete picture of what it's like to find success, and then see it flicker and go out, which allows us to learn more about those aspects of the music industry and the story arc of the career. It's certainly not all fun times and glamorous. And each of these have pushed through and continuing to create and perform, either under a new name and evolution, or still carrying the flag and moniker of the original. Jeff now releases music under the title Heiskell and it is very good. We wrap things by learning more about that and share a song or two.So let's enjoy this insightful chat with Jeff Heiskell of The JudyBats as he's got great stories to tell! And hope you enjoy the music whether you already knew them or if they're new to you. Thanks for listening! And big thanks to Dan Drago of 25 O'Clock Pod for joining on this one, as he was a fan of The JudyBats while listening to them on WBER from Joey Guisto, who helped me Text us your thoughts on this episode, and who should be OUR #NextFavBand...As always, our hope is to bring you "your next favorite band". Jesse Starcher, Robert Cooper, Mik Wanamaker and Mark Radulich present their Body Count Merciless 2024 Album Review as part of the MHOD Jukebox!Body Count is an American heavy metal band formed in Los Angeles in 1990. The group is fronted by Ice-T, who first established himself as a rapper but co-founded the group with lead guitarist Ernie C out of their interest in heavy metal music. Ice-T took on the role of vocalist and writing the lyrics for most of Body Count's songs, while Ernie C has been responsible for writing the group's music.Body Count's self-titled debut album was released on Sire Records in 1992, and garnered much attention due to a controversy around the song "Cop Killer". Their label, Sire Records, and their parent company, Warner Bros. Records, defended the song; however Ice-T chose to remove it from the album because he felt that the controversy had eclipsed the music itself. The group left Sire the following year, and they have since released seven more albums.Three out of the band's original seven members are deceased: D-Roc died from lymphoma, Beatmaster V from leukemia, and Mooseman in a drive-by shooting. Body Count's current lineup includes vocalist Ice-T, guitarists Ernie C and Juan Garcia, bassist Vincent Price, drummer Will "Ill Will" Dorsey Jr., and backing vocalists Sean E Sean and Little Ice (Ice-T's son). The band received its second Grammy nomination and later won the award at the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards in 2021 for Best Metal Performance with their song "Bum Rush" from the album Carnivore.Merciless is the eighth studio album by American heavy metal band Body Count. It was released on November 22, 2024, via Century Media Records. Production was handled by Ice-T, Vincent Price and Will Putney. It features guest appearances from Corpsegrinder, Howard Jones, Joe Bad, and Max Cavalera.Disclaimer: The following may contain offensive language, adult humor, and/or content that some viewers may find offensive – The views and opinions expressed by any one speaker does not explicitly or necessarily reflect or represent those of Mark Radulich or W2M Network.Mark Radulich and his wacky podcast on all the things:https://linktr.ee/markkind76alsohttps://www.teepublic.com/user/radulich-in-broadcasting-networkFB Messenger: Mark Radulich LCSWTiktok: @markradulichtwitter: @MarkRadulichInstagram: markkind76RIBN Album Playlist: https://suno.com/playlist/91d704c9-d1ea-45a0-9ffe-5069497bad59

I'm very excited to share that Dr. Alberto Villamandos joined me for Episode No. 129, and we talked a little bit about life as Associate Chair and Associate Professor of Spanish in the Department of World Languages & Cultures at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Go, Roos!We also talked about him being the recipient of the 2024 Chancellor's Award for Community Engagement.Dr. Villamandos was kind enough to share a portion of his evening with me amidst busy end-of-semester pressures, travel plans, and the many other things that keep his plate full, so I must extend some heartfelt gratitude for his generosity. We touched on his undergraduate, graduate, and doctorate studies, as well as growing up in Pamplona, Spain. And of course we had a peek at a few of his favorite albums, which were these:Radio Futura's La Ley del Desierto (1984)Enemigos de lo Ajeno (1986), El Último de la FilaPixies' Doolittle (1989)Galore (1997), The CureThe Best of Depeche Mode, vol. 1 (2006)You can find Dr. Villamandos' book, El Discreto Encanto de la Subversión: Una Crítica Cultural de la Gauche Divine on Amazon or you can check it out at the UMKC library. Oh, and shouts out to the Dr.'s honorable mentions, Trainspotting: Music from the Motion Picture as well as Bram Stoker's Dracula: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack. Thanks to any and all that support the show.Cheers.copyright disclaimer: I do not own the rights to the audio clips contained within this episode. Thanks to the sales explosion of compact discs in the 1990s, the expanded playable length of time from forty-four minutes of vinyl to nearly eight minutes gave bands plenty of room to stretch and experiment not only on albums but other releases as well. Re-enter the single, once the domain of 7" vinyl and cassingles, cd singles allowed for bands to release even more material across multiple formats, occasionally helping to propel bands on multiple charts with dance remixes and such. Depeche Mode were no stranger to using singles to release non-album material, and one fine example is the 1990 World In My Eyes maxi-single released by their American label, Sire Records. Compiling the single remix of the title track along with 12" club remixes, and adding a pair of non-album tracks in multiple mixes, turns a simple single into a forty minute, seven-track mini-album, and gives us even more Depeche Mode material to talk about. The Meaning of “Once in a Lifetime”Byrne might have used preacher cadences as a jumping-off point for the song. But his message is more universal than regional, as he hints at the idea of someone living a life that has developed almost beyond their control. The refrain of You may find yourself supports this notion. Byrne implies that a person's location, car, and spouse might not be anything they've actually chosen. In the second verse, consciousness and free will bubbles to the surface. This is not my beautiful house, the unnamed protagonist snaps. This is not my beautiful wife. In the final verse, he looks for a way out. Where does that highway go to? he wonders. And then, in a killer of a final line, he realizes that somewhere along the way, his journey has created consequences: My God, what have I done?In the refrains, water, both to baptize this lost soul and to wash away his sins, floods over the proceedings. But even that isn't enough to effect any meaningful change in the course of a life. Same as it ever was, Byrne direly intones. That stagnancy might have affected the folks struggling within “Once in a Lifetime.” But Talking Heads made sure with songs like this that they were never settling for the same-old, same-old.
With the music landscape dominated by the grunge movement coming out of Seattle, it's little wonder that Pennsylvania's Riverside, a band influenced by the likes of The Smiths and Echo and the Bunnymen, didn't stand a chance. Featuring Keith Kochanowicz (vocals, guitar, organ) and his brother Glenn Kochanowicz (bass, vocals), Kenneth Jackson (guitars), and Geoff Verne (drums), the band's debut - and ultimately lone - album for Sire Records, One, was released in 1992. While featuring a number of alt-rock-radio friendly songs (“Waterfall,” “Cinnamon Eyes,”), Riverside couldn't catch a break and were dropped by the label despite finishing a sophomore album, Taste. More than 30 years after One's release, the Kochanowicz brothers hooked up with the Lost in Ohio record label and a Kickstarter campaign was launched to fund the first-ever pressing of the album on vinyl. Despite never achieving massive success in the ‘90s, the campaign was fully funded within weeks of the announcement and the vinyl will be available later this summer. In this conversation, the Kochanowicz brothers discuss the formation of the band, how fellow Pennsylvania band The Ocean Blue served as mentors, the realities of having a major label record deal in the ‘90s, and what happened after Sire dropped Riverside. Meet a former A&R rep who was deeply entrenched in the heart of the music industry with giants like Sire Records and Warner and then chose to leave it all behind. Jeff Serafine is a man of many facets. He navigated the ever-changing tides of the music industry and rubbed shoulders with icons. Jeff left the big labels to pursue artist management independently, but life took a series of unexpected turns. Realizing he wasn't fulfilled in the fast-paced world of the music business, Jeff, who initially studied audio engineering and music therapy, ventured into assisting startups until he realized that fledgling businesses were a lot like bands. Jeff's story is a blueprint of daring change, a narrative that challenges the status quo and inspires the maverick in each of us. In our talk, Jeff delves into his experiences in the music industry, sharing insights from his A&R days and reflecting on the industry's evolution. We explore the intersection of art and business, and Jeff opens up about life's unforeseen turns. He humorously discusses the ubiquity of his name and shares his half-serious dream of one day founding a conference exclusively for people named “Jeff.” Our conversation covers everything from the importance of networking – where a simple ride-share could lead to new opportunities – to his pragmatic shift to financial advising. Jeff's journey is a testament to embracing change and finding new paths when the familiar ones diverge. Finally, Jeff shares his love of stand-up comedy and jokes about possibly giving it a try if everything else falls apart. Wrapping up our discussion with Jeff, it's clear that his story celebrates life's unpredictability. It's a narrative that challenges us to find excitement in the unknown and to view each 'hard left' not as a detour but as a pathway to new and exhilarating destinations. Larry also discusses a rare cover of Neil Young's "Albuquerque" and the joy of seeing a band like Phish covering classics. He mentions the fan culture at Phish concerts, including the prevalence of nitrous oxide vendors in the parking lot. He shares his experience over three nights of the concert and highlights the setlist from each night. Beautiful Neil Young tune from Tonight's The Night released in 1975The song sees Young returning to a theme that has filled his music from very early on: the vapidity of fame. It's something he seems to struggle with even more than most other musicians. Or, at least, it's something he's chosen to sing about more often than most. It may in fact be the most common theme of all his music, besides obvious stuff like heartbreak and love.In "Albuquerque," Young is thinking about renting a car and driving from Albuquerque, New Mexico, to Santa Fe, just to be alone and "independent from the scene." He never tells us why he's in Albuquerque to begin with, but he does tell us he wants to roll a joint and rent a car and stop to eat some "fried eggs and country ham."The "country ham" bit is kind of interesting, because country ham is a food popular in the southeast, not so much in the southwest. It's probably just a simple oversight on Young's part, but it may also reveal another common thread in Young's music: the escape into rural simplicity as a cure for the craziness and fakeness of modern day life.Phish first played this song on July 26, 1998 at the Starplex Amphitheatre in Dallas, TX.Played a total of 17 timesLast played on June 11, 2011 at Merriweather Post Pavillion outside of D.C., gap of 457 shows SHOW #2: Spanish MoonPHISH : Spanish Moon : [LITTLE FEAT] : {4K Ultra HD} : The United Center : Chicago, IL : 10/15/2023 - YouTube:50 – 2:05October 15, 2023, Second set out of Pebbles and Marbles and into A Wave of Hope Little Feat cover, one of their most popular tunes. From the album, Feats Don't Fail Me Now, released in 1974 "Spanish Moon" was written and sung by guitarist Lowell George, who was a creative powerhouse in the early years of Little Feat. The song is about a fictional place called the Spanish Moon - a seedy club with whiskey and bad cocaine, but a girl singer that made it worth it. There are many dangers at the Spanish Moon, but the ones likely to do you in are the women.Lowell George was an excellent storyteller and created the Spanish Moon from his imagination, but he lived through the vices he describes in the song, especially cocaine. Around this time, his addictions were starting to overpower him, his health started failing, and he developed hepatitis. Feats Don't Fail Me Now was the last Little Feat album where he was clearly the leader; his contributions to the band slowly tailed off, and in 1979 he released a solo album. While on tour supporting it, he died of a heart attack at 34. It was written by John Paul Jones, Jimmy Page, and Robert Plant. The song became a centerpiece at all Led Zeppelin concerts thereafter, until their final tour. It appears in both the film versions and both live album versions of The Song Remains the Same, released in 1976 and expanded in 2007. It appeared once more in 1994 on Page and Plant's reunion album as the title track. It also appears on Led Zeppelin's 2012 live album Celebration Day, which documented their 2007 reunion performance at the O2 Arena in London. It was re-released on the deluxe edition of Houses of the Holy. The title is derived from the military practice of showing no mercy to a vanquished opponent and from the brave act of not asking for mercy when vanquished. This theme is captured in several of the song's lyrics. Like "Immigrant Song" two albums prior, it evokes imagery from the Vikings and Norse mythology, with lyrics such as “the winds of Thor are blowing cold.”Record producer Rick Rubin remarked on the song's structure, "It takes such confidence to be able to get really quiet and loose for such a long time. [Led] Zeppelin completely changed how we look at what popular music can be." This was one of the new songs that he introduced at the festival, after which the guitarist was eager to perfect a studio version. Hendrix recruited bassist Billy Cox, who had played with him while they were in the army and his drummer friend Buddy Miles, for a new ensemble, Band of Gypsys. They recorded this as the B-side to his "Stepping Stone" single for Reprise, but it was quickly pulled after Hendrix complained about the mix. Written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, released on Exile on Main Street (1971)Exile on Main St. has grown to be appreciated with time, and this is an example of a song that become more popular later on. In a 2003 interview, Mick Jagger explained: "On the Forty Licks tour, when we were preparing the set list for a show in Yokohama, Chuck Leavell suggested we play 'Loving Cup,' the ballad from Exile on Main St. I didn't want to play the tune and I said, Chuck, this is going to die a death in Yokohama. I can't even remember the bloody song, and no one likes it. I've done it loads of times in America, it doesn't go down that well, it's a very difficult song to sing, and I'm fed up with it! Chuck went, Stick in the mud! so I gave in and put it in the set-list. Lo and behold, we went out, started the song and they all began applauding... Which just proves how, over time, some of these songs acquire a certain existence, or value, that they never had when they first came out. People will say, What a wonderful song that was, when it was virtually ignored at the time it was released." >> Phish debuted the song on February 3, 1993 at the Portland Expo in Portland, MaineInteresting because they did eventually cover Exile On Main Street as a Halloween musical costume on October 31, 2009 at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, CA, part of Phish Festival 8.Clearly one of their favorite covers, and a crowd pleaser, played 148 times.Last played before this show on August 5, 2023 at MSG, gap of 13 shows
With one foot in Toronto and the other in NYC, indie rock power trio ON is back with the new single 'Make Me', a song of frustration and wanting to recapture that euphoria. This is a cry for what once was... and then resolution and a peaceful acceptance of what is. Released via Toronto-based imprint Indiestructable Records, this single sees the trio carry on the legacy of the band from which they were formed - 90's Sire Records band Acid Test. ON is a riveting power trio led by Lucy Di Santo (vocals, bass) with Dan Cornelius on drums and Steve Fall on guitars - apart from Acid Test, its members have also been in other popular Toronto bands Danko Jones and Deliuss. Dishing out infectious guitar riffs with a dash of groove, their adrenaline-laden music is a invigorating, the band paying homage to their post-punk, grunge, old-school funk and 90s college rock roots. "After our first release and jaunt with Acid Test, I was at a crossroads of musical styles; I had a desire to go back to a raw, gritty and powerful sound - I wanted to play a simple driving riff that expressed the frustration and yet immense drive I was feeling. Lyrically - I wanted to feel that “thing” that inspired me to want to pick up a guitar/bass in the first place; so I first wrote the ‘Make Me' riff on a guitar. It was kind of a “oh yeah.. so take that” kind of musical statement,” says Lucy Di Santo
In this week's episode we're featuring an album from Austin-based outfit The Derailers from the peak of their power: "Full Western Dress" (1999). Riding thousands of road miles as well as the rise in the Americana and alt-country radio scene, The Derailers Bakersfield-infused honky tonk saw them gain strong regional and national success, though it never translated into widespread mainstream radio airplay. A special musical connection and combination between joint frontmen Tony Villaneuva and Brian Hofeldt equated in tight harmonies and catchy, jangly, twangy country music pleasing fans of the hard stuff from coast to coast. The majority of the album was written by the band and earworms are plentiful as Buck & Don - er, Tony and Brian - looked to take it to the next level with their second outing on Sire Records in "Full Western Dress". Quality material!

On today's episode Brandon pays tribute to Sire Records co-founder Seymour Stein who passed away on April 2nd. During his time with Sire he was responsible for signing The Ramones, Talking Heads, The Pretenders and Madonna. And for better or for wrose he is also credited with inventing the term New Wave.
On April 2, 2023, the music world lost a pivotal figure in Seymour Stein. As a teenager, Stein worked for Billboard Magazine and was instrumental in the development of the standard bearer for measuring pop music success in the United States, the Billboard Hot 100 chart. In 1966, Stein co-founded Sire Records with Richard Gottherer. In the earliest days of the label, much of their focus was on bringing UK underground and progressive music to US record buyers, with distribution deals with London and ABC. Stein's most fruitful alliance was with Warner Brothers, where Sire was responsible for breaking punk, new wave, and alternative artists including Ramones, Talking Heads, The Smiths, Depeche Mode, Echo & The Bunnymen, The Replacements, The Ocean Blue, and many more to American audiences...not to mention one of the biggest pop stars to walk the earth, Madonna. We salute the spectacular Sire Records catalogue and remember Seymour Stein this week. Our Third Lad is a self-professed rock n' roll historian and fellow Sire Records afficionado, Brian Eichenberger from the wonderful podcast Rock n Roll Bedtime Stories. Each week, Brian and his friend/co-host Murdock go deep to discuss (and set straight) the rumor, innuendo, and hidden details that surround some of your favorite bands and songs. We're big fans of the show, and think you will be too! It's only fitting for Brian's appearance that we tell a few titillating bedtime stories during the episode: How Seymour Stein chased Dee Dee Ramone out of his bedroom! Sire passes on a legendary guitarist! The artist who pestered Seymour in the hospital! Crazy Phil Spector! Find out who Uncle Gregg nearly punched! Fake bands and unscrupulous managers! In the latest episode of Retrosonic Podcast we welcome Mickey Bradley, bassist of The Undertones prior to their "Celebrating 45 Years of Teenage Kicks Tour" (or a 'series of weekends away' according to Mickey). We discuss his excellent book "Teenage Kicks: My Life as an Undertone" (Omnibus Press) and he picks some of his favourite songs and music that had an impact on the early days of The Undertones. Sadly, we recorded the episode the day that Seymour Stein passed away, so Mickey pays tribute to his former Sire Records label boss and picks his favourite Sire Records release. Throughout the show, we discover his influences as a bassist, some of his favourite music related books and authors, how he missed Paul Simonon smashing his bass while touring with The Clash, the influence of Lenny Kaye's "Nuggets" compilation and he picks some pivotal early Undertones tracks. We also cover last year's excellent compilation of the best of the current Paul McLoone fronted line-up "Dig What You Need". As you would expect, Mickey is entertaining company and the episode is soundtracked by loads of Mickey's superb musical choices including Ramones, David Bowie, The Jam, The Clash, Sex Pistols, Dr, Feelgood, Elvis Costello & The Attractions, Rolling Stones and 13th Floor Elevators. Today is Thursday, so Howie Klein joins us from Down with Tyranny and the Blue America PAC where we usually talk politics. And there's lots to talk about today, including the travesty unfolding in Nashville right now as the TN state legislature is seeking to expel three Democrats from the legislature because they dared to stand with the protestors following last week's mass school shooting in Nashville. But Howie was a music industry icon back when we first met in Los Angeles almost 30 years ago. Before he was president of Reprise Records, Howie worked with Seymour Stein at the groundbreaking Sire Records. Stein died this week, so I'll ask Howie to share what he did that was so important. But we'll start today with John Nichols, national correspondent for The Nation magazine, and from a family who's been in Wisconsin for, I believe, seven generations. On Tuesday, Wisconsin voters made sure the state's Supreme Court would be controlled by Democrats, thereby blocking the Republicans from enacting an ancient provision from putting another nail in the coffin of women's reproductive rights.
Sire records Co-founder/President Seymour Stein has passed away at the age of 80. We pay tribute to a true maverick and musical pulse reader that defined multiple eras and genres. The Man who Signed the Ramones and Madonna has a legacy as rich as the amount of people touched by his life and passing. From late 70s alternative/art rock to 80s new wave - he helped cultivate a sounds of generations. Signing everyone from Echo and the Bunnymen to Depeche Mode and the Cure in the 80s, he along with his wife Linda and Team helped create an legendary roster of artists today. Many are rock and roll hall of famers and pioneers in the music industry. Later while still at the Sire records helm bands like the Hives, Tegan and Sara saw their US label bring them to the forefront of American audiences with US breakout records arriving via Sire. Albums from Ice-T to Finnish heroes HIM-Sire released an embarrassment of riches. Seymour Stein was at the helm for most, retiring in 2018 at 75. Thanks for everything Seymour!

Seriously, the first track on The Ocean Blue‘s self-titled 1989 debut on Sire Records was the – hook. The opening chords of “Between Something and Nothing” (featured on today’s AMM) lead into not only one of the defining moments of dream pop as we know it, but it’s also this…mood. Adam Boyd joined the Badass Records Podcast for episode #13, and what a treat it was to have him. We go back some 15ish years to the good, old service industry, a time in which we'd occasionally agree to disagree on this, that, or the other. These alleged debates were -- in my experience -- almost always light-hearted, in the spirit of quality conversation, and often over a post-shift cold one.Adam was always one of my favorite F.o.H. soldiers, and -- though we seldom see one another now -- he remains one of my favorite humans; I suspect his wife and kids feel lucky to have him both a) in their lives, and b) out of the business, as the saying goes. When it came time for calendars and brass tacks, etc., we -- by way of happenstance -- broke a few BRP barriers, in that this conversation not only included more badass records than any of the previous, but it also shattered the existing longest-run-time mark, clocking in at just a smidge over four hours. I imagine the Wednesday morning after our chat to've been a foggy one for Mr. Boyd at the ol' jobby-job, but, hey -- when you're hashing out 15 records -- it's gonna be a minute.Anyway, Adam's list arrived via the text-message machines and included the following albums (in this order):Nirvana's In Utero (1993)This Year's Model (1978) by Elvis Costello & the Attractionsthe infamous London Calling (1979) by The ClashPink Flag (1977) by Wirethe game-changing Loveless (1990) c/o My Bloody ValentineEnter the Wu-Tang (36 chambers) by Wu-Tang Clanthe currently-on-display-behind-Tom-Segura's-chair (2 Bears 1 Cave Podcast) Ready to Die (1994) by The Notorious B.I.G.Prefab Sprout's 1985 record titled Steve McQueenthe 1976 self-titled album by The Modern Lovers, which I accidentally skippedEverybody Knows This is Nowhere (1969), Neil Young & Crazy HorseJoy Division's 1979 release, Unknown PleasuresParis 1919 (1973), John CaleThe Velvet Underground's 1969 self-titled debuta 1968 number called Odyssey & Oracle by The ZombiesEither/Or (1997), Eliott SmithThe Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society (1968), by The KinksMany thanks to Adam for being willing to dust off the ol' communication lines and share his unofficial COVID-19 music project with me, and extra-special thanks for being willing to come sit in my basement and bullshit about it for four hours. For three decades, one record company ruled the music charts. But in the blink of an eye, their reign was over. After crafting in-depth biographies of music legends like Brian Wilson and Bruce Springsteen, New York Time best-selling author Peter Ames Carlin decided to tackle his most sweeping subject yet: the history of Warner Bros. Records. Through a series of wide-ranging interviews with industry legends Mo Ostin, Lenny Waronker, and many others, Peter wrote the book "Sonic Boom", the amazing story of a record label that put artists before commerce, and in the process built a musical dynasty. Join Nick and Peter as they discuss the tumultuous history of Warner Bros. Records, from its formation as a way to keep the studio's actors from making money for other companies, through the heyday of the 1970's psychedelic rock era, to the corporate machinations that tanked the label in the 1990s. HIGHLIGHTS: [02:00] Peter explains how his childhood record collection led him to write his new book, "Sonic Boom" [05:26] Legendary producer Lenny Waronker returned to Warners Music, on the sole condition that he could get his first job back, as a low-level A&R guy [08:22] Peter explores the origins of Warner Bros. Records under the watch of Jack Warner [10:52] Peter faced a challenge in writing his book, in trying to balance the Mo Ostin part of his story with the Warner Bros. Music part [13:13] Peter realized early on that the personalities running the company were going to be the heart of the book [15:45] Peter put a lot of work into his book proposal to convince the major players to get on board [18:54] Writing about Paul Simon and Bruce Springsteen exposed Peter to the rivalries between Warner Bros. Records and other record labels [21:52] Mo Ostin broke open the "no rock 'n roll" floodgates at Warner Bros./Reprise by signing The Kinks [25:37] Mo Ostin realized that Top 40 radio wasn't going to be the future of music, because Baby Boomers wanted more sophisticated rock music [26:37] Warner Bros. gave artists the time to build an audience and a back catalog [28:47] Stan Cornyn, who hated advertising, created a unique and humorous marketing voice for Warner Bros. Music that appealed to younger people [33:04] Warner Bros. Records missed the punk/new wave trend, but they bought Sire Records and suddenly had Talking Heads and Madonna on their roster [35:34] Mo Ostin was candid about his difficult business relationship with Seymour Stein, the founder of Sire Records [40:14] Warner Bros. Records was finally done in by Corporate America, and it ended in the most "soap opera way" ever [48:41] When Peter was a TV critic, he came to the realization that every culture-changing show was an accident that evolved from the creators working without corporate intervention [51:05] Peter describes his creative writing process, and the "creative calculus" he uses to come up with an angle that inspires him Thanks for listening!
