With Marcus Aurelius: The Stoic Emperor (Yale University Press), author & therapist Donald J. Robertson brings us the life and philosophy of the last of the Five Good Emperors. We talk about how knowing the life and travails of Marcus Aurelius helps one understand how to lead a Stoic life, how the Antonine Plague compares with our life in Pandemia, the reasons Donald found modern biographies of Marcus Aurelius wanting, and how this book brought him new understanding of the intricacies of Ancient Roman life and Marcus Aurelius' big decisions. We also get into the role of Stoicism in his own life and how that philosophy's been debased into the unhealthy "lower-case stoicism", the literal toxicity of being a tough guy, how Stoicism and its nuanced view of emotions inspired modern Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, why the psychotherapy field is resistant to acknowledging Stoicism's contribution, and why Freudians really disapprove (think symptom substitution). We discuss the importance of building emotional resilience and understanding one's value judgements, Robert Burns' role as a gateway drugs to Stoicism, the alternate history in which Socrates was part of Christian tradition, Donald's Eureka! moment and how he accidentally became a writer, how Wilko Johnson can help me live a fuller mortal life, and a lot more. Mark Diacono's Imperfect Umbrella Podcast

I spent my childhood summers in Lancashire with my cousins, getting sunburnt, catching sticklebacks in the beck, drinking dandelion and burdock, and eating Snowball ice creams. I'd go back to school to a classroom of piss-takers mocking my newly acquired Burn-leh accent: even now, three stops in a taxi and I'm all ‘stay lucky treacle'. Psychologists will tell you a dispensation for taking on accents is driven by the desire to be liked. Isn't that all of us. Anyway, whenever I chat with Adam Frost, I come over all Wilko Johnson. Apologies in advance for any missing tees and aitches.I've got to know Adam well over the last however many years and he's not ploughed any of the familiar furrows to our TV screens. Typically open and engaging, knowledgable and popular, he's never short of a word: I hope you enjoy our conversation. Thanks for tuning in - it is much appreciated. MarkPS If you felt moved to leave a comment/review over on Apple podcasts or wherever you listen if not here, it would help encourage others here and be very welcome. Thank you.A couple of things that sprung from our chatThere were a few things that came up in our conversation that you might not be familiar with, that I thought it would be good to share in case you were interested. Wilko Johnson, the Dr Feelgood guitarist with the eyes of a killer and the legs of a Riverdancer, died last November, which sent Aidan and Graham back to his previous obituary. Made as the pub rock pioneer fought an apparently terminal cancer, The Ecstasy of Wilko Johnson is less a rock documentary and more a fable about life, death and the creative spirit - a typically modest affair, then, from Julien Temple. Temple, perhaps the ultimate Pop Screen director, is not new to these shores, but our hosts quickly discover this might be the Julien Tempest film ever made. Along the way, we unpick the film's myriad allusions to cinema, poetry and astronomy, as well as discussing Temple's previous attempt at chronicling Dr Feelgood in Oil City Confidential. It's a magical film that definitely isn't just for Wilko fans. Look, the film's about cancer so I'm not going to make a joke here, I'll cut to the chase - you get so much more on the Geek Show Patreon, from our brand new movie miscellany podcast Last Night..., to two classic Doctor Who reviews a week from Graham. There's also Unseen Asia, in which Rob champions Asian films that lack a UK distributor, and a monthly bonus episode of this very show - the last one, a spoiler special on Glass Onion, may be our best yet. Welcome to Episode 51 of Retrosonic Podcast where we welcome former drummer with The Chords Buddy Ascott into the 'studio' on New Year's Eve to look back on 2022. Buddy, now playing with The Fallen Leaves, is currently writing his memoirs and he treats us to a reading from a chapter about an unfortunate incident in Guildford Civic Hall in 1979 involving The Undertones, Jimmy Pursey and some ex-Sex Pistols. He also talks about more recent gig experiences which include drumming with The 79ers as special guests at The Vapors' weekend event at the iconic Portmeirion village, location of the cult TV show The Prisoner. Then we cover The Fallen Leaves shows at the Dublin Castle and their appearance at the Don Craine tribute at the Half Moon Putney, plus we get a sneak preview of a song from the Leaves' next album. We also take a look at some of Retro Man Blog's favourite LPs, Singles, Compilations and Gigs of the year and play a selection of great tracks from The Clash with Ranking Roger, Rhoda Dakar, The Limiñanas, The Prisoners and Michael Head & The Red Elastic Band. We also announce our Band of The Year - The Undertones - for some superb gigs, their compilation "Dig What You Need", Damian O'Neill and Billy Doherty joining Baby Shakes on stage for "Teenage Kicks" and related releases such as That Petrol Emotion's stunning box-set compilation and Damian's solo album "An Crann". Then there's a more sombre look at just some of the influential musicians who sadly passed away in 2022 including Chris Bailey, Wilko Johnson, Jet Black and Terry Hall but we celebrate their legacy with music from The Saints, Dr. Feelgood, The Specials and The Stranglers. Happy New Year to you and here's looking forward to more great music in 2023, we hope you enjoy the show! He talks about the impact of Lester Bangs and Robert Christgau before explaining why he followed the Voice's executive editor Kit Rachlis to California and the L.A. Weekly. We hear how he became fascinated by the pre-rock history of African-American L.A. and how that led to the publication of The Great Black Way (2008). His fourth book, Chuck Berry: An American Life, gives us the opportunity to discuss the problematic brilliance of St. Louis's "Black bard of white teen angst", a half-century after the creepy novelty comedy of 'My Ding-a-Ling' gave the Black-rock pioneer a No. 1 hit on both sides of the Atlantic. We return to our L.A. theme to hear clips from a 1991 audio interview in which Tracy "Ice-T" Marrow talks to Andy Gill about the birth of gangsta rap and his thrash-metal side project Body Count. This edition was dropped the week that the legendary guitarist Wilko Johnson died, aged 75. Back in February 2014 I interviewed Wilko at the Giants of Rock Festival in Minehead. We talked about getting old but continuing to rock, a life-affirming choice Wilko and his mostly middle-aged audience both made with glee. The interview wasn't recorded for broadcast so its backstage, rough-and-ready aesthetic is by accident not design. But I think the informality of the conversation makes a welcome change and gives a good sense of the man himself.Johnson rose to fame with the band Dr Feelgood in the 1970s. He continued to play with various bands after leaving the Feelgoods in 1977. In January 2013 he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and given less than a year to live. He threw himself into touring and a year later when we spoke he was still going strong. At the Giants of Rock Festival he was playing with his long-term sidekick, bass legend Norman Watt-Roy and drummer Dylan Howe. Listen to this and tell me Wilko's not a philosopher. Hosted on Acast. This tale is about a legendary guitar hero who has officially cheated death. To successive generations of guitar aficionados, Wilko Johnson is a cult figure in the rock world. He's been a Blockhead and a founding member of Canvey Island's celebrated punk precursors: Dr Feelgood whose unwavering devotion to old-fashioned rhythm and blues and Wilko's explosive guitar playing inspired everyone from Paul Weller to Joe Strummer.  Life made a cruel twist in 2012 when Wilko was diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer but it led to the most extraordinary year of his life which started with a farewell tour, included a part in Game of Thrones and an album with Roger Daltrey, and then culminated with the most surreal experience of all: a cure. The tracks features are: Roxette and Milk & Alcohol by Dr Feelgood, Going Back Home by Wilko Johnson and Roger Daltrey from their album Going Back Home, and Say Goodbye from Wilko Johnson's album Blow Your Mind. It's Autumn 1992! Damn, Would I Lie To You?What an interesting time for the UK singles charts. Is it fair to say the decade was at some sort of apex point? Well, the tracklist for November's NOW, That's What I Call Music 23 album was certainly not giving us a clear a view of what the next big thing was going to be. Or was it?Whilst the start of the 90s had exploded with a colourful wave (or should that be rave?) of indie & dance, and very soon Britpop would take a steely and sneering guitar grip across the nation, 1992 almost seemed to be in a fascinating holding pattern. Not exactly the annus horribilus that some were calling it, and as always the NOW team were on hand to serve up a suitably compiled snapshot of musical delights (and Billy Ray Cyrus) for us to feast upon.Tasmin Archer, Sophie B Hawkins and Betty Boo led the way for some great female fronted pop moments, Arrested Development were providing an RnB laidback groove for the 90s, the Freddie Mercury tribute concert was still impacting across the charts and The Shamen were being, naughty, naughty, very naughty. But there was also a fair degree of retro feel to this edition of NOW. Was it the 80s (Simple Minds), 70s (ABBA) or 60s (Vanessa Paradis!)? TV advert songs - which brand of jeans were you buying? And don't even mention waistcoats! Just too funky for me...But even when things don't seem to be happening, there's always something happening. And there's no doubt that the 90s had plenty of excitement waiting around the corner!Joining me for this episode is author, visual artist and sometime musician Zoë Howe.Zoe has produced acclaimed biographies including The Slits, the Jesus & Mary Chain, Wilko Johnson, Stevie Nicks, Florence + The Machine, Lee Brilleaux and Poly Styrene and in 2021 was part of the team behind the award-winning documentary Poly Styrene: I Am A Cliché. She has made radio programmes for Absolute Radio, Resonance FM and currently presents the Rock 'n' Roll Witch show on Soho Radio. Zoë's forthcoming book Witchful Thinking (a handbook for the modern Wise Woman) is to be published by Llewellyn in May 2022. And later this year will also see her revision of the book The Art of Punk released, and the launch of The Jam 1982, a collaboration with The Jam's Rick Buckler. Paul Holloway's second guest on Fuzzcast is Wilko Johnson. Wilko made his name as guitar player and songwriter with Dr Feelgood. Hailing out of Canvey Island the band are widely acknowledged as the best band on London's pub rock scene in the mid 70's which heavily influenced the birth of punk rock. The band were riding high after their live album Stupidity topped the UK charts in 1976 but Wilko left the Feelgood's after a spectacular bust up with frontman Lee Brilleaux whilst recording the band's fourth album Sneaking Suspicion the following year. Wilko was later invited to join the Blockheads by Ian Dury and recorded the Laughter album with the band. During his time with the Blockheads Wilko formed a friendship with bass player Norman Watt-Roy who still plays in his 3 piece band today together with drummer Dylan Howe. There was a resurge in interest in the Feelgood's in 2009 when Julien Temple released his excellent documentary film, Oil City Confidential. On the back of the film Wilko landed his first acting role with a part in Game of Thorns as House Lancaster executioner See Ilyn Payne. In 2013 Wilko was diagnosed with terminal cancer and given less than a year to live. He refused chemopathy and crammed into what he thought was his last year; trips to Japan, a farewell tour, recording a best selling album with Roger Daltry and making another film The Ecstasy of Wilko Johnson with Julien Temple about his own mortality. However, a fan who happened to be a cancer specialist perseuded Wilko to take a second opinion and Wilko underwent a major operation which cured him from cancer. In 2016 Wilko published his autobiography Don't You Leave Me Here and in 2018 he released Blow Your MInd, an album of new material. Wilko was still gigging until Covid stuck.
