Lickers Jay and Deon wax poetic on ten of their favorite records from their respective collections which are filed under the letter J. Their choices lead to discussions on Blindboy Boatclub (he rules), the origins of their nicknames (do you even know these guys?), another blind-bought Burger Records beauty (Jay is a total Burger fanboy), Steve Albini (R.I.P.), and much more. Tune in and rock out! --- In the early 1970s, legendary collaborator and self-proclaimed non-musician Brian Eno famously designed a deck of 115 cards containing elliptical imperatives to spark in the user creative connections unobtainable through regular modes of work. He called his creation "Oblique Strategies." For the past half century, countless artists and professionals across the globe have benefited from utilizing the oblique strategies technique when attempting to overcome a lull in creative output. In 2024, idiotic, introverted yet somehow still award-winning* hobby podcasters and self-proclaimed Lightnin' Lickers Jay and Deon found themselves uninspired when contemplating the potential theme of their upcoming thirty-seventh episode. Together, they decided... to default back to the alphabet. Because they have a reasonably solid grasp of the alphabet and how it works. They had previously utilized the letters A thru I, so naturally, they went with J. Our good pal Anna Goldthorp joins us this week and takes us into a genre of music we have not yet covered with Shannon and the Clams' third album, Dreams in the Rat House. Hailing from Oakland, Shannon and the Clams are part of a rather deep, and popular, retro garage rock revival scene. They've been going since 2009 and have six albums in that time to critical acclaim. The band themselves are very well respected in this scene, and the boys had really great fun immersing themselves in an entire genre of music they'd never really explored before. A genre which is somewhere between 60s do-wop, RnB, garage rock, psychedelia and rockabilly. There's a lot to be said about this genre - and believe us, we do say a lot about it - but what's pretty clear is that when it comes to recreating that 1960s feel, Shannon and the Clams stand head and shoulders above their peers. The resulting conversation covers a lot of ground, which is why this episode is a bit of a bumper edition because when Anna is about, we can't help but have a good old chinwag. In this episode we talk about the death of the American dream, Elvis Presley, the allegations around Burger Records, beauty standards in music, David Lynch, punk rock melancholia and way more besides. So do come with us on the journey, and at the end voice your opinion as to whether you think Dreams in the Rat House is an unsung classic by voting in our poll below. Next week - MORE GUESTS!

This is the meteoric rise and overnight demise of Burger Records, with LA Times reporter Jessica Gelt.   Gelt wrote the landmark  story that pulled the curtain back on the toxic sexist culture behind the SoCal indie label. Burger Records was known for a DIY atmosphere, a place where outsiders could create and celebrate the music they loved. But there was a darkness of sexual harassment, predation, and assault that brought the label down overnight, and left a complete fandom wondering what happened and why — this answers both those questions.  Q has spent decades mastering the ins and outs of CA politics but politics isn't his sole focus, and he knows it's not yours either. Political-ish looks outside the realm of politics for insightful and entertaining conversations about history, social justice, pop culture, business, music, and sports, with a dash of politics from time to time. Sexual Misconduct and Accountability in Alternative Music

Often when allegations of sexual misconduct come out, it is reported on by the media and receives considerable backlash from the music community. In some cases, the community rallies together to dethrone the artists from their platform, in the case of PWR BTTM in 2017 and Burger Records in 2020. But in many cases, the artists are let off easily with a blanket apology and continue to release music with little effect to their career, like emo singer Front Porch Step. We take a deeper look into these cases and why sexual misconduct reoccurs at alarming rates in the music industry. What is the psychology behind this? How has this behavior been perpetrated across decades? How can this behavior be stopped and prevented? What is accountability and how do we apply it effectively? While it's a difficult conversation, it's imperative that we continue having it, not just when allegations come out, but year-round. If we are to truly change the music industry into a safe environment for all, then all sectors of the industry from artists to CEOs have a responsibility to learn, call out, make changes and educate their peers and employees at all levels. Ačkoli je velké horko, Olaf i Ziky sbírají novinky ze světa hudby. Díky horku uslyšíte i nějaké to funění. V recenzním okénku probereme desku z demonahrávek PJ Harvey a zabrousíme i do "demožánru" obecně. Olaf se rozpovídá o desce od Somniate, která se mu líbí, i když něco vytknul. Taky k Blood Incantation. Zveme na koncerty a říkáme, co jsme bohužel nestihli. Chválíme Bajkazyl v Brně! Hodně a dlouho. A pozveme vás na výstavu - hudební. Druhou polovinu věnujeme konci labelu Burger Records a okolnostem toho konce. Pusť to!

Carla Sariñana is a Mexico-based musician. Her solo project is called Silver Rose, she plays bass in Ruido Rosa and is also label manager at Devil in the Woods. She says she wasn’t surprised when she heard that California’s Burger Records folded after members of more than a dozen bands on the label were accused of predatory behavior, sexual misconduct and assault, especially towards fans who were minors. She’s familiar with the sexist culture of the music industry, saying when she lived in Los Angeles, bookers “wouldn’t give me shows unless I would go out for a beer with them.” Carla Sariñana joins Sound & Vision to discuss her reaction to the news about Burger Records and how labels have a duty to proactively prevent misconduct, the issue of gender-based violence and femicide in Mexico, the sexualized marketing of women in the music industry, and more.
