Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

KCSU music director Ria sat down with Jared Swilley of Black Lips ahead of their Dever show at the Mission Ballroom on October 28th, 2025. On this tour the band is supporting Viagra Boys whilst performing songs from their latest album “Season of the Peach”. The two discuss the excitement of touring, the juxtaposition of telling intense stories with a lighthearted sound, and how aliens might react to bird sounds.Ria JanapatiWe are here at the Mission Ballroom, October 2[7]th, [2025]. You are Jared of the Black Lips-Jared SwilleyJared, and you are?Ria I am Ria, Music Director of KCSU; I've got some questions. Jared Cool. Ria First one being: You've been doing this music thing for a hot minute now, are there things about being on the road specifically that change for you excitement level wise? Jared Oh sure, yeah. There's a different, like, excitement level. I've been touring since I was 16. We drove- the first like US tour we ever did was pretty miserable, but it was still the funnest thing; like, by my standards today, it would be pretty miserable, but I remember seeing the desert for the first time, and that's like, that excitement- I can remember the excitement I felt, like, the first time I saw a cactus. But like, now, you know, I slept on a pretty drive today because I've seen a lot of that stuff. So that changes. I still love being on stage and stuff. But yeah, I mean, just like, anything you do forever, things get boring. Ria Are there any cities that you visited a first time and you, like, couldn't wait to go back? Or maybe the opposite, you were really excited, but it wasn't your fav. Jared Oh, I won't mention any cities I didn't like, because I figure it's best not to say negative things about people or places. But there's... like, yeah, a lot of cities. I mean, talk about [the] excitement of being someplace. I remember the feeling of the first time we went to Europe to play; I couldn't believe it, like, because it was, it felt really cool. And I wanted to go back to all those cities, and I have been back to pretty much all of them. Or, like, you know, like Tokyo, like going there, I was like, "I have to come back here. It's awesome." So most, most places I would like, I, you know, there's, there's very few places I'd be like, “I never want to go there again.” So, yeah, I like most places.Ria I've seen that you guys have come to be known for pulling some antics during live shows, especially more in the DIY spaces. Has there been anything you've really wanted to do during a live show that would just be like a fun little act that no one saw coming? Jared There is one that we've been talking about doing... because we've done, like, all sorts of crazy stuff, and we're, like, older now, so I'm not trying to, like, make anyone upset anymore, like, do anything crazy. But like, have you ever seen the Wizard of Oz? Ria Absolutely. Jared So you know, like, when the Munchkins, like those guys come out as, like, the lollipop... the old guys? We want to- I guess I'm spilling the beans here, but it'll surprise people when we do it. But like, we kind of, like… We have this song that's about eating candy on our new record, and we want to just like, stop in the middle, hopefully, at a really huge show, like something like this [Mission Ballroom], or at a big festival, and, like, drop our instruments and go into the lollipop guild dance and then just start playing again. That's kind of like what we want to do.Ria Nice. A little surprise, a little dance break. Jared YeahRia Yeah, awesome. You just have to get the choreography down. Jared Yeah.Ria And then your newest album, Season of the Peach, I noticed it takes on a lot of different genre influences. There's some rockabilly sound, there's some 60s stuff, some folk stuff going on, just all over the place. So when you're taking inspiration to create something new like that, where do you find yourself looking?Jared I'm always looking in the past, and that's just for me. Fortunately, in this band, like all five members [contribute equally], right? So that's why it can kind of seem like it's all over the place, like musically. But, I mean, I only listen to, like, very old music, so that's kind of really what I'm pulling from; I listen to, like, old country and doo-wop and rockabilly and blues and stuff like that, so that's usually... I'm just trying to recreate stuff in a kind of, like, not as good way as the stuff I really like.Ria Back on your 2020 album, there's a song called "Angola Rodeo", and that song really interested me in the storytelling of it. It seemed like a bit of a silly take on, like, real life events. So-Jared YeahRia When you're going about doing that. Where do you draw the line between like, not taking yourself too seriously?Jared Well, you want to like, not like... or at least with me, I want to be like, if I'm talking about something very serious, and that's a very serious thing... Do you know the story of, like, the Angola rodeo? Ria Yeah, it's a prison rodeo.Jared Yeah, prison rodeo, and we actually went to it. I'd always wanted to go, and we went, and it's like, you know, it's pretty controversial. I happen to be in favor of it, just because it's like, if you're doing life in prison, or if you're on death row, like, it's the best day of your life when you get to do... They actually do it for like, a few months of the year. But you know, you don't want to be too preachy or too sappy, so you got to have your tongue firmly in cheek. My theory has always been, if you have, like, a really sad subject matter, make it a very poppy sounding song. And if you have really happy sounding stuff, it should be like, darker. That's kind of like how I like to do things. Ria Yeah, just flip them on their head. Jared And it's still, like... The lyrics are still like, kind of serious; but it's like a fun kind of sounding song. But you know, the Angola Prison is, like, one of the darkest places in the United States. It's pretty rough there.Ria I just thought that was really interesting, because on a first listen, if you're not really paying attention, it'll just be like, "Oh, this is a fun little tune-Jared There is, like, a big, like, stark contrast when you go to that rodeo, because you are in this just incredibly dark place. You drive in and you see death row, and you see the fields they're all working in, but then you go in there, and it's like, a really happy environment; like the prisoners... It's like, all guys on best behavior, but they've been working; like, they sell their arts and crafts that day. Their families are allowed to come in. They can actually have like, conjugal visits with their family in there. So it's like, it's super dark, ...

While Black Lips have matured and grown since forming in 1999, the Atlanta-based garage band haven't "settled down." Case in point is Apocalypse Love, the group's 10th album, released last year on Fire Records. Incorporating gospel and country influences, it's as strange and exciting as the band's early work, but it also showcases a new depth to the band. Today on Transmissions, Black Lip Jared Swilley joins us to discuss his pentecostal roots, his minister father coming out of the closet, the importance of the Bomp Records catalog, his mentor The Mighty Hannibal, and much more. Transmissions is part of the Talkhouse Podcast Network, check out Talkhouse for more great reading and listening, and support Aquarium Drunkard Transmissions by pledging on Patreon. Next week on the show, guitarist Marc Ribot.
This week on the show, we're joined by London-based singer/songwriter David John Morris. Perhaps you know him for his work with folk rock band Red River Dialect, but for this talk, we mostly speak about his latest two solo albums, 2021's Monastic Love Songs and 2022's Wyld Love Songs, on which, to quote Aquarium Drunkard's Tyler Wilcox, balances "sacred and profane concerns, finding moments of welcome humor amidst more spiritual matters." He joined us to discuss his time in a Buddhist monastery, how it augmented his approach to music, his podcast listening habits, the consistent spiritual longing of the creative process and, truthfully, so much more. Support Aquarium Drunkard on Patreon. Transmissions is a part of the Talkhouse Podcast Network. Next week on Transmissions? Next week on the show, Jared Swilley of The Black Lips joins us to document the band's apocalyptic love story. This episode of Transmissions is brought to you by Dad Grass. On this episode of the Adventures of Pipeman, Pipeman is joined by Gringo Star, a band from Atlanta, Georgia. The band, which has been playing for a long time, is at Shaky Knee, and they discuss the rainy weather, which they hoped would turn into a Woodstock vibe. The band recounts how they kept their gear dry during the rain, and one of them shares that some of the best shows he has ever seen were downpours. They all agreed that it is better than extreme heat, which can be unbearable. Pipeman shares an experience from a festival he attended last year in France called Hell Fest, where it was 104 degrees, and he did interviews outside because it was cooler. The press tent was like a sauna, and he would take the rain over that any day. The band shares that the best gigs are when it is raining, and there is a little mud fest, and everyone is just having a blast. When asked to describe their music, Gringo Starr shares that they play a variety of rock and roll, and they have been playing together since 2007. The band is made up of two brothers, who started playing together when one was in high school and the other was in middle school. They started playing at middle school dances, and now they are playing at Shaky Knee. The band has played at music midtown, and they recount their experience with their old band name. You can find everything you need on how to follow them on social media, how to get the new music, how to buy some of the merch all over on their website gringostarr.net so be sure to check it out if you like what you hear.On June 2, Atlanta's Gringo Star will release their new album On And On And Gone out June 2 on My Anxious Mouth. Gringo Star is also announcing U.S. tour dates. The upcoming U.S. tour will include shows in New York City, Atlanta and more. All upcoming shows are listed below.Gringo Star have made a name for themselves as one of Atlanta's most valuable rock & roll exports, carrying the torch for hazy, psychedelic garage rock in a city primarily valued for its contributions to hip-hop. Brothers Nick and Peter Furgiuele are the constant creative force of Gringo Star, and have outlasted wave after wave of buzz bands and indie blog darlings, carving their own career path through constant reinvention and an unparalleled work ethic, amassing a loyal and enthusiastic international fanbase along the way. Their mind-bending take on doo-wop inspired R&B and British Invasion rock & roll has garnered praise from the likes of Pitchfork, Consequence of Sound, Paste Magazine, KEXP & more, and landed them on bills alongside everyone from Cat Power and Feist to The Black Angels and Weezer, not to mention tours with Wavves, And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead, and their Atlanta-based contemporaries Black Lips.Though the band's 2008 album, All Y'all serves as the start of Gringo Star's storied career, the band's core songwriting duo, the Furgiuele brothers, have been playing together since they were kids, born into a family with strong ties to Georgia music history. “Our grandad started out in radio in the '40s and '50s in Columbus, GA.,” Nick explains. “He was a huge promoter of R&B back when it was still super segregated, and he was playing black music and putting on shows with Little Stevie Wonder, James Brown, Sam Cooke & the Soul Stirrers, a lot of Gospel shows. So we grew up hearing all these stories, listening to all this music. Our grandfather was inducted into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame posthumously. And my grandma—all her photo albums are like Jackie Wilson shirtless backstage, hanging out.”With their family's R&B connections and their young obsession with early rock & roll, it wasn't long before the two brothers started making music themselves. When Nick was 15 and Peter just 11, they picked up bass and drums, respectively, formed a rhythm section and joined their first garage band. “We played together in the house and messed around on a little two-track,” Nick says. “We've been writing songs together since before Peter was a teenager. We even played his 8th-grade dance.”Eventually, the brothers formed Gringo Star and began the career that has come to define their last decade. All Y'all and Count Yer Lucky Stars forced the world to pay attention. 2013's Floating Out To See found the band experimenting with producing their own records and layering more keys and strings into their compositions. 2016's The Sides and In Between contained some of the finest songwriting of the Furgiuele's career, and 2018's Back to the City reinvigorated their sound with a new intensity, equally dark and shimmering. The band's legendary live energy was captured in 2019's album Controlled Burn (Live In Atlanta). Despite multiple personnel changes, Nick and Peter have remained steadfast in their partnership, continuing to stand by one another through thick and thin in their artistic endeavours. There's no telling what comes next for Gringo Star, but there's no doubt that the Furgiuele brothers will continue to write and record on their own terms. “We've had a lot of opportunities over the past ten years. If we had an idea about something we wanted to, we did it,” says Nick. “I can't think of a single thing I'd change."Gringo Star Tour Dates U.S. Tour Dates 04.27 - New York, NY @ TV EYE04.29 - Asheville, NC @Fleetwoods05.05 - Atlanta, GA @ Shaky Knees Festival05.18 - Cincinnati, OH @ Northside Tavern05.19 - Green Bay, WI @ Badger State Brewery05.20 - Windsor, ON @ Meteor06.02 - Chattanooga, TN @ JJ's BohemiaTake some zany and serious journeys with The Pipeman aka Dean K. Jared Swilley is the bass player and co-founder of infamous Atlanta garage rockers, 'The Black Lips". In this episode, we look back at over 20 years of notorious musical chaos. Jared relives the wild ride one record at a time, from getting kicked out of high school and tragically losing a bandmate just days before their first tour, to signing with Vice, recording with Mark Ronson, and playing shows in the Middle East. There are also some classic war stories, secrets to the bands' success, and hazy details on a new record due later this year. TALK's sixth episode with Artist, Musician, Model & Muse - Zumi Roscow. On episode 6 Dana sits down with Zumi to discuss Zumi's artistic path, they cover how she became involved in The Black Lips, recording an album with Sean Lennon (in John and Yoko's studio!!), walking a runway show for Balenciaga, and balancing an incredible personal loss whilst becoming the Gucci muse to Alessandro. Sit back and take this interview in, we have no doubt you'll understand why Zumi Roscow is an inspiration. Zumi tells us about her experience post-college when she found herself back in Los Angeles with no desire to partake in the world of acting and constant rejection that comes with the territory. She reached for her saxophone having not played it in over a decade and soon after found herself playing in bands. Fast-forward to the present day and in non-pandemic times you could find Zumi touring and performing with The Black Lips. A self-described “late-bloomer,” Zumi also discusses how she went through years of self-doubt and how important it is to work with the right people, people who can keep you confident and elevated. She also points out how important it is to really go through all the experiences you can, that there is no skipping out on life experiences and moments. Ultimately going through life's hardships make us all more empathetic and human connection can help overcome self-doubt -- a philosophy that checks out in our opinion. The themes that come up throughout the episode are empathy, confidence, and fighting the idea of “perfection.” Why TALK loves Zumi -- Zumi's humanity shows through when she speaks. Clearly an artistic soul, you very quickly understand that you are in the presence of a sensitive and empathetic person -- important qualities for any creative person to have. We also love that she has consistently found herself in situations where she has been able to challenge the status quo (walking a Balenciaga show at 35 years old) and fully thrives in doing so. Atlanta's own Black Lips is a band that keeps audiences on their toes, literally — which you'd know if you've ever landed in the mosh pit at one of their shows — and figuratively, given that the latest it-bag line from Gucci is named after band member Zumi Rosow. For 20 years, founding members Cole Alexander and Jared Swilley have been making unruly garage rock, rockabilly records, and sometimes, they can sound like old country crooners. In fact, they have a new album coming out in early 2020, which they say is a country album. It's called The Black Lips Sing In A World That's Falling Apart .
Gnats don't read maps, but the bugs do seem hesitant to cross an unseen, geographic boundary in Georgia. Learn about the disparities north and south of the "gnat line" from Tales from the Gnat Line author and longtime state lawmaker Larry Walker.
126- Bridget Battle (Tweens). Yoni reaches out to Bridget for a talk to include in his video travelogue show pilot (also called The Wandering Wolf) about Cincinnati. They get together at Black Plastic, a Cincinnati record store, to discuss Bridget's super cool career path, her tours with The Breeders and Black Lips, the recording of her debut album and her work on her yet to be released follow up.
